  • It didn't take long for the pitching philosopher Shota Imanaga to establish himself as one of MLB's best pitchers. Right from the get go, Shota shredded through MLB lineups and put up perhaps the greatest numbers in any pitcher's start to their MLB career, before surviving the summer and going on a late season surge that helped him finish among MLB's best rookies.

I really hope GMs are more open to guys like Shota in NPB. There's always the top guys like Yamamoto last year and Roki coming up, but there are so many other great arms that could have similar production to Mike II without breaking the bank. I think of Shoki Murakami and Kona Takahashi. There is some risk with Takahashi that he may end up more like Fujinami. But Kona brings a fun personality like Shota over to the US. I have also heard he's an analytics nut. You'll see some people say he sits low to mid 90s, but he can dial it up to 156-158 KPH ( 97-98 MPH)late in games too. Murakami could be comp'd as a RH version of Shota, but sorta just superficially. low VAA too, but just an interesting delivery overall. I don't have access to any spin or movement numbers on NPB pitches, but I think Murakami sits 90-92ish. Don't really recall him sitting low 150 KPHs, but I may have missed a game or two where he was touching 151 to 154 (93-94ish). He doesn't strike out batters like Shota did in NPB, so maybe he'd be even a little less expensive than Shota was. Honestly if both he and Munetaka both come over next year, i have a weird feeling Shoki would have a significantly better first season.

@@armychowmein8021 thank you for watching and this great comment! What are your thoughts on Sugano coming over at this stage of his career? Also has shoki expressed interest in mlb?

@@llamabaseball I was so pumped when I woke up and saw he had said he want to test the MLB market. I think he may get something like a 3 year deal with lots of team protection. But I don't imagine he'll cost all that much more than what Shota got given Tomoyuki Sugano's age. But the dude is a legend in Japan. I am not really sure of a good comp for a mlb pitcher. It's not necessarily a unique delivery, but he keeps a fairly low VAA. I could see him coming over and putting up 30 starts, 160 IP, 135 K, and something like a 3.90 FIP.

@@llamabaseball Shoki Murakami hasn't mentioned mlb as far as i know, but i think part of what causes whether or not a player asks his team to post him is whether or not he's generating buzz in mlb. just trying to get that started up for him too. Another one to keep an eye on is Hiroya Miyagi out of the Buffaloes' pitching factory. I forget he's done with his 5th professional season so could ask his team to post him as well. I don't think it's likely he'll get posted this year, but he started this year at age 23 and was lights out all season. He has gotten progressively better every year since 2022.

@@llamabaseball Exactly. All this talk stateside about Roki, and barely anyone is mentioning Hiroto Takahashi. I can't wait for him to be eligible for posting!
