The Phillies have always seemed like a home run or bust kinda offense, and it just simply isn’t sustainable, especially when the key bats inevitably get cold. I feel like having a couple big power hitters is healthy, but a good postseason team needs to play small ball effectively in my opinion.
That didn't do the Mets any good in 2022, having the 2nd best average, and OBP in baseball, with the 3rd lowest strikeout rate, being 3rd in sack hits/sack flies, winning 101 games and getting put out in the Wild Card round.
Mets playing with house money at this point. Makes it A LOT easier to play clear minded.
The funniest part is, they have just been regressing every time. And that's after all the trash talking about how the team was built for the postseason. Lol.
I remember how Philly fans were making fun of Braves fans for talking about the layoff and how bad it was for the team going into the postseason. As usual though the Phillies fans have disappeared and it's all crickets now
The only people who call Philadelphia the toughest place in the postseason are Philadelphia fans. It's not true and they're the ones who walked out of their home game against the Diamondbacks with a couple innings left and still time to make something happen.

There is no such thing as choking in baseball in a five game series. It is all just a crap shoot. This is why wild cards are stupid and anathema to a 162 game schedule. The regular season should ONLY find the four most deserving team. That is what made baseball fun for 100 years. Then we had to start giving out participation trophies.

No one should cop out and blame the BYE or the "rust" at all. This is just who the Phillies are. Either red hot or ice cold. They were ice cold this series. Just like they were for most of September, Games 6 and 7 of the 2023 NLCS, and Games 4-6 of the 2022 World Series. I'm not blaming the playoff format for the Phillies being who they are.

I’m not sure the whole “time off” thing has an affect that people think. The yanks are up 2-1, dodgers are going to game 5 against the best team in baseball the last 3 months, guards and tigers has been a tight series although tigers are up 2-1. My point is other than the Phillies all other series have been tight. Phillies just have a history of the bats going quiet in the postseason.

I’ve only been super into baseball since 2022 when they introduced the 6 seed in playoffs and so far it’s been insane to me just how much chaos is in MLB playoffs. Once you get there, literally any team has a chance to win the whole thing. That is unlike NBA or NFL so much. I love the chaos (I’m a dbacks fan) but I totally understand the frustration that the best teams don’t make the World Series
Not to take anything away from the teams that do beat the top seeds but I do think something has to be done to give the team that’s supposed to have the advantage a better chance to avoid being bounced out. It is tough to win when you’ve been sitting around for a week having to play a team who hasn’t stopped at all.

The Mets are not a scrappy underdog, they have the highest payroll in baseball, and underperformed for a quarter of the season. This is what was expected of them.
As a Mets fan, I knew going into the NLDS against the Phillies would be difficult but I had faith. Then on the flip side I saw a video a Philly fan made about how they aren't worried about New York and how it'll be an easy series and blah blah. Did you not see what we just did? Unlike Met fans, we don't underestimate our rivals, we know how good they are and that's why we don't like them, Philly fans really went into this series underestimating the Mets. (I've seen several Philly fans so mad at the loss that they are calling the Mets cheaters LMFAO). The Phillies tried their best, but their best was not good enough.

They collectively batted .400 with a 1.200 ops against them, problem is that everyone else put up 0s. Our 1-2 and 5-9 spots collectively going like 5 for 60 made the 1-2 bad games Harper and Nick had that much worse. They were the only guys coming to the plate for us in that disaster series.

That final regular season series they had a Citi Field where the Mets took 3 of 4 from them should’ve been a clear indication of what was going to happen. All the Mets did this series was expose the Phillies and show that they were just a fluke because the Braves were missing their top guns.

Philly had it too easy in the NL this year. Mets had to grind it out. Similar to what Philly did in 2022 when the Mets and Braves were at the top. I knew that if the Mets could steal one in Philly, they could close it out in Queens. Games 1 and 4 were similar games- Philly Starters shutting down the Mets but Mets working the pitch count to get into the BP. Even when the Mets were doing bad this year, on paper, they were a team of great hitters. And that 2022 Mets team was known for grinding out at bats. They wore pitchers out. This years team still has some of that approach but with some timely hitting.
MLB script still strong. Knock out all of the Yankees threats. Astros, now the Phillies, Doyers be next. 😂
The Phillies and Dbacks were hot coming into the playoffs but both ran into buzz saws in the World Series. I think this year is different. I think one of the "underdog" teams is going to win the WS this year.
As a Diamondbacks fan, we have kept a seat warm for the Phillies and an extra ticket so they won't steal one. We are going to see red together.

Phil’s had easiest first half schedule and one of hardest second half. I remember their fans losing their minds when analysts would say “let’s see if they can keep this going second half.” Welp, they didn’t. Because they weren’t that good. Braves won the World Series in 21. Nats in 19. Those are orgs that know how to get it done, maybe not every year. But they have recent rings to prove it. I hate when I’m right…. I’m a Phillies fan and I picked the Mets to win in 4. But I thought they were going to win game 1. I thought the Phillies were a .500 team at best at the end of September and were not a playoff team.
Was a sad day for Phillies fans... but the Mets deserved it. Even before the post season started it felt like the Phillies were running on empty. Mets came back from being 10 under .500, and several weeks of incredible comebacks before this series. I wish the Phillies had taken it all the way, but you can't deny that the Mets earned it.

What the Mets are good at is making their opponents' defense throw a lot of pitches and digging their cleats into their opponents' bullpen when the call has to be made.

Not really. The Nats were a 1 year wonder. The Mets won 101 games in 22 and lost in Game 3 at home to the Padres in the WC round and last year had a bad year with injuries. They didn't come out of nowhere and have the best record in baseball since June. 1-9 one of the deepest lineups and bench in MLB.

Man you didn’t even mention the most important aspect of this story. The down time kills division winners. Hitters and pitchers come into the playoffs cold. WC teams are always on point. It took out the Dodgers and Braves for the past two years and now it took out the Phillys. The format needs to change

If you are the Phillies, you have to try to make a massive shakeup in the offseason. You can’t go back with the same exact team. They clearly aren’t good enough. 2023 was their chance and they pissed all over it
The way we were playing down the stretch, I can't say I didn't see this coming. But that doesn't make it any less heartbreaking.
Offensively, their approach as a whole was just bad. No discipline at the plate, too much reliance on the long ball. It just isn't sustainable. Although really it wouldn't have mattered in the end, since the bullpen couldn't even stop a nosebleed! Let me tell you, as far as the bullpen's execution, I'm ALL IN FAVOR of it!
I think the thing that frustrates me the most is that I feel this year was as open as the title window was gonna get. They're gonna have to deal with these same Mets again next year, plus the Braves are gonna be back at full strength, and the Dodgers are gonna have Ohtani's pitching to go with his hitting. Changes need to be made this offseason, or the window might shut on us completely
