Abheri - A Glimpse by RAAGA METRO

A Glimpse on Abheri Raga.
Hello viewers happy to be back in Raaga Metro’s next Mash up. We are very excited to be back after a short break.
Abheri is a janyam of raga Karaharapriya. The Arohanam and Avarohanam goes this way
S G2 M1 P N2 S
S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S.
This Ragam is known by the name Deva Gandharam in Dikshithar’s school of music. Kartanaka DevaGandhari is another Raaga closely allied with Abheri just by substituiting G2 with AntaraGandharam(G3).Apart from that we also have Bhimplas in Hindustani Music which is similar to Abheri. Also Dhanasree which is a Hindustani Raga is a very close scale of Abheri. There are many such Allied Ragas to Abheri. Sometimes they are known by different names. The Nagumomu has made use of the wide structure of Abheri . This is what is being termed as Abheri or Karnataka devagandhari for the last 100 years. They all are bound by the same structure.
Shall we take a look at the Carnatic compositions in this Raga? Nagumomu very famous composition by Saint Tyagaraja,Bhajare re Manasa by Mysore Vasudevaachaar,Muraliya Nadava Keli by Vidyaprasanna theertha,Vinabheri By muthuswami Deekshithar,Vellai Thamarai by Subramaniam Bharathi in Bhimplas. When you hear these songs it creates a high energy mood within you, also it’s a Morale booster too. This Raga is a late morning, Raga by itself. If you are having a stressful day, you can try to begin your day by hearing Nagumomu. Why don’t you try this out to see the difference!!!
that Abheri has a penetrating effect on the mind and also it stays with the listeners mind for several days. Another interesting fact here is the nagumonu in Abheri that you sang was composed by Saint Tygaraja in a slightly different way. That Abheri had a different swaram Dha and it emoted a different mood.

It so happened that one day Tyagaraja swami’s Shri Rama idol which was so dear to him went missing from his home it was under such circumstances that he composed Nagumomu kriti . Both the sadness of losing his Rama and Bhakthi were emoted thru this kriti.
Contemporary music has also made use of this Raga. Another interesting fact that I remember is L Shankar - violinist ,Vikku Vinyagam,Zakir Hussain the 3 musicians had collaborated and created a Contemptrory music Album in this Raga. This was also nominated for grammy’s in the year 1995. And 90’s kids will not forget their favourite Song kannodu kaanbadellam. The graphics ,Nithyashree Mahadevan’s voice, the tune all these will always be remembered. And when we look at the older era, we also have the famous classical song Singaravelane Deva.
