I believe a lot of photographers/content creators were using Google+ as it didn't compress the images/video as badly as Facebook did. The images uploaded looked really well and we're organized nicely...and the circles; that was very useful.
It was 2014 and my classmate's(also scoutmate) mom wouldn't let her get a Facebook account. She then quit the club after that. The only person I know who posts on Google+ back then. Her mom was right about that though. Her academic performance wasn't as good as before after she had a smartphone in high school.

The problem with Google is that it's to big to fail and by that I mean they didn't have a do or die mindset unlike Facebook, which means giving up was an option for them.
Seeing baby Marques is so funny to me now. I started watching him around the Google+ days, but watching him currently I almost forgot how young he looked back then 😅
I think Google+ was definitely a bit of a missed opportunity. I think if they had greater integration with maps/reviews, as well as a concept of degrees of separation/closeness instead of circles it could have provided its own niche.
One unspoken reason why Google+ doomed to fail in the 1st place: if UA-cam nowadays failed due to lack of innovation based on restrtictions to creativity, then so do Google+?
So, I'm glad I can comment here. I think one of the main reasons Google failed is because most people still only know it as a search engine. Unless you have a reason to investigate what else Google can offer you, like Meet, Chat, Calendar or News, you wouldn't even know they were there.
Fantastic content. The voice, the story, the editing technique. Ever since watching one of your videos by chance 3 days a go, i have been binge watching all your videos. Mr. John , you're outstanding. Well done
It’s kinda crazy because UA-cam acted as a social network years ago, equipped with Direct Messages, Custom Profiles, and you could even chat back and forth through profile comments.
@@joeljustjazzing but UA-cam was already huge and it never even had anything close to a rival competitor, they had plenty of room to experiment they own the market for video sharing
I think the main reason Google+ failed is: nobody wants to use a social media platform that looks like Microsoft Excel. They should have invested more in UI, and picked a theme. Make it easy to understand, nice to look at and inviting, not "corporate and professional" Also, using all colors of the rainbow does not do any favors on your UI either. It makes it hectic and messy. Pick a color theme and stick to it. Give it personality and identity.

Google have inherited the Microsoft problem- they're too big, too corporate, the social network your boss would use (to keep you in check). I once had a small argument with someone on Facebook in a public group (didn't know the person). Couple hours later my ex-girlfriend (still friends on FB) texts me asking about my "fight" with the other guy ... because apparently Facebook decided to give her a notification that I had a random conversation with a random dude in a group she wasn't a member in. I got so annoyed with FB after that I set everything to private, deleted anyone I didn't know personally, left most groups and now I only post stories that disappear in 24 hours. If I fucking want someone to know about a conversation I had with someone else then I would freaking tell them myself.

One thing that really helps Reddit is it auto subs you to the top subs and has the front page as something separate. If they did something like that and had a dedicated team of mods and content creators to just have something things would be a little bit more different. It's not like launching a video sharing sight, most of what it needed was text and picture stuff. Honestly they could have had a good chance taking on Imgur.
To be frank it would be easier to do it again now then it was then. Android can be a good base and if they concentrate on news feeds in the beginning, it will open facebook-like opportunities a bit later.
