  • In this beginner guitar lesson, Ayla Tesler-Mabe tackles “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band. This is a great song to learn if you’re a fan of the acoustic guitar, and only have some basic skills under your belt. Before we get started, it’s important to know that we’ll be learning how to play this classic tune in a different key than the original recording. That way, we can use open chords that you’re likely already familiar with. To make things even easier, we’ll keep the strumming pattern as simple as it can get.
The chords you’ll need to know to play this song are G major, C major, and D major. If you’re not comfortable playing and switching between these chords yet, you can take some time to get them nailed down before proceeding with the rest of the lesson.

    About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only playing for two years, her first UA-cam video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

I used to know a kid named Maurice. I always called him Space Cowboy or Gangster of Love. Of course he was too young to know why I called him that but years from now I'm hoping he'll get it.

One thing? Some guitar players likes to play solo...and some only play chirds and sing... Is it all our personal choice if we only choose to play solo and not use chords ir we ahould use solo with chords?

I enjoy your tutorials, they're very informative, and you go over them with great patience which is always important for teaching, also I noticed you're playing a Fender- newporter acoustic, I purchased one last summer and I love it, mine is the ( candy apple red), yours looks like the( ice blue satin) they look awesome and they play and sound great, plus they have other great colors like Olive satin; Arctic gold, champagne and good old sunburst
Love what you're doing and keep on rocking 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Please tell us, i got same problem. My teacher some time ago showed me with 4 fingers and all over the internet i see 3. What is this mystery?

    • @bobfoglesong3079

They are different voicings of the same chord. The G chord is made up of three notes: G, B and D. Note that the open second string is a B and the third fret of the B string is a D. That is why they are both a G chord. They just sound slightly different. One may be earlier to transition to than the other depending on the chord progression or one may just sound right for a particular song.
If you know the F-barre chord, slide it up two frets and it becomes a G. Sounds a little different from the open chords, but it's the same three notes!
