  • In this video you will learn 5 Tips for painting with watercolors that will help you enjoy watercolor painting, especially if you are a beginner. These may seem simple, but they will make a huge difference.
    1. Use the right brushes
    2. Use the Right Paper
    3. Use Puddles
    4. Load your rush with the right amount of paint
    5. Control where the water goes
    I highly recommend having at least two paintbrushes, flat and a round. The two brushes I use are a 3/4" flat and a #10 round, however you can use a 1/2 inch flat and a #6 round as well.

    HUGE TIP: Use two different water cups. One for cleaning the brush and the other to use to add clear water to the water colors. That way you're not putting dirty/colored waters on different colors.

    I really appreciate that you use those prang watercolor sets we are all so familiar with in your tutorials. I think they are perfect for practice and learning about color mixing basics. I see a lot of tutorials in which the artist uses really expensive paints, so it's really refreshing to see someone who makes something beautiful with the paint sets we all used in grade school. 😀

      If you search on youtube for "beginner watercolor" or "watercolor step by step" you will get a bunch of tutorials painting some nice motives. If you just want to practice it is a great way to start. And don't compare your result to the shown one too much - just focus on what you liked and want to practice further on. With creating any sort of art comes inspiration for further art projects.

    can I use a cardboard paper (if that's what its called) when painting with watercolors?

  • @minjung3359
    @minjung3359 7 років тому +6

    I have a problem - I have been painting watercolor for three years, and I always struggle with hues. Every time I try to paint, a few seconds after brushing, the paint lightens its hue. When I dip it in watercolor again, now it's too vibrant comparing to the color I had before. What should I do?

    • @MrOtterArtStudio
      @MrOtterArtStudio  7 років тому +3

      Min this is a very common problem. Watercolor gets lighter as it dries. This can be deceiving as you paint and try to match the color. If you keep painting does the color dry and become similar to the one before it? If you have mixed a puddle of color, it shouldn't change unless you re adding water or more pigment

    • @minjung3359
      @minjung3359 7 років тому

      Mr. Otter Art Studio I actually use watercolor that comes in paint tubes and a brush that contains the water in the stick of the brush. Therefore, I'm always inconsistent with making puddles and rather dip the watercolor paint on the brush, moisten the paint on it and then draw on the color to the paper. Do you think this is not a good idea, and should I rather make puddles instead?

    • @riteasrain
      @riteasrain 6 років тому

      Min Jung
      Use normal brushes not those Aqua brushes. The Aqua brushes give a different effect and make it harder to judge how much water you are putting on the brush because the Aqua brushes are automatic while watercolour brushes are you adding water manually.

    My paper is to absorbent. It is almost like painting on cloth! I cannot paint wet on wet because the paper absorbs any drop of water. It is even labeled watercolor even though it obviously doesn’t like water. Help.

    When I watch this video learned that when we make watercolor art we need to use the right brushes, it will be easier to use watercolor if we use the right brushes. Load the brush with the right amount of paint. Also, it's more durable if we use the right paper on our watercolor art.
