They look fantastic for the time and are still good. The whole combat engine is super pleasant like in games released years later. Also the textures and light effects really work with the low-poly graphics, so the game doesn't look that ugly like many other games of the era.

Too bad they released the sequel early and then abandoned it the day after release when they closed their studio doors and jumped ship to another company.

I looked for this game for decades...
Looked in the magazine back in the day when i was almost teen, played it in gaming center somewhere 2002-2004, my mother threw magazine in trash and forgot the name of it.
From that day i was looking for the name of the game to buy for myself after i got computer, all i could remember was bulky guy with a blue shirt.
Now i can rest in peace.

I know the feeling. Something about these old, classic games is really something that hasn't been properly replicated in today's video games.
With each new, modern game that is released, I just crave more older- More polygonal games with that special FEEL about them.
When Elder Scrolls 6 is released, I'm probably gonna go play Morrowind instead. Or Daggerfall.

    • @MrDoctorColossus

I think that quality you're missing in modern games might be this thing they call "nostalgia"
For some reason old games are good at that haha

    • @randomguydoes2901
      @randomguydoes2901 5 років тому +10

@@MrDoctorColossus Nah there is more. Look at what unreal 99 did with almost nothing but some dynamic lighting.
Now look at Just Cause, I'm more bored with that shit.
Rocket league hits the spot perfectly here. The strategy games back then tried to be fun and customizable, look at AoE 1 game settings. Half an hour of shit to experiment with before the game even started.
Look at wc3 custom maps and compare to the failed sc2 custom scene, how do they manage to screw that up?
Moddability is another thing that's still not taken seriously by developers.
With a ten times larger market comes ten times the vomit, look at EA and how they are fucking over every franchise.

There was also a game mode (Headball) where cutting off enemies heads and arms, then throwing them in basketball esque stylized hoops (not necessarily killing your opponents) was the way to winning the game. These maps had little jumpy leatherskin trampolines and you could score extra points with a long range shot timed at the right moment. What a cool game

Being a 10 year old kid when Rune was on store shelves, I mostly chose PC games for my mom to buy me by the box art. A viking with a horned helmet and axe, with another weapon visibly sheathed on his back, it was the perfect game for me. And I poured hundreds of hours into the multiplayer even with our at the time 56k connection. I still became pretty good with 150-200 ping against players with around 20-50. When we first got a new computer and broadband cable internet in 2002, it was a night and day difference.

This game was kinda obscure and hard to get IMO. Even the pirate shop dudes (back when the internet was not a thing for many of us plebs in Balkans yet) were puzzled when I one day came there to ask them if they had Rune game. They told me to come back an hour later (usually they'd say several hours or even a day later) so I bought the magazine I saw it in with me. When I got there they told they didn't know what this Rune game was so I showed it to them and they were surprised but determined to get into their games library so they told me to come back tomorrow and they got it. :)

    (long comment warning)
I admit I'm someone who's still rather new to PC gaming, having only started to get serious about PC gaming in 2012, and I admit my PC's not custom or very high end, I just upgraded the PC my dad bought for me during college (my old PC that run on Windows XP started to die on me a few years back so my dad got me a new PC that runs Windows 7 mainly for school purposes, but because it had a decent 3.5GHz CPU already in it I just upgraded the GPU to a GTX 660 and the power supply to 600 watts, so I can get pretty good settings out of most games [I'm gonna go fully custom for my next PC]), so that said I did miss out on A LOT of quality PC games, especially ones from the days when not too many PC games were getting console ports.
This channel is really helping me get a good idea on what classic PC games to check out in order to experience the kind of stuff the hardcore PC gaming crowd were big on back in the day, and after videos like this I've either bought a few of the game reviewed (like Blood 1, I'm skipping the sequel), put them on my Steam or GOG wishlists (like Rune), or played and beaten a few and gained new favorite games or franchises (like Thief, with Thief II: The Metal Age being my favorite).
As someone who was raised on consoles, classic PC gaming (and even some aspects of modern PC gaming due to there being more quality PC ports in recent years, that as of now the only current gen console I own is Wii U for all the first party Nintendo releases) is such an interesting territory for me to explore, and I am loving it. Don't know why I didn't before, but you've got yourself a new subscriber!

Lazy Game Reviews You're very welcome! And indeed, it is a great help. The PC Gaming Wiki has also a huge help to me for learning about ways to tweak certain older games so they run better on modern hardware (or even just getting "not so old" games to run better in general; as someone who played Oblivion on the Xbox 360 first, it was great to learn I could finally get rid of the bugs Bethesda never fixed thanks to fan patches in the PC version, and of course now I'm practically addicted to using mods, they really add a lot of replay value).

Check out also these classics: Doom 1&2, super metroid (its snes, but emulators), dungeon keeper1 (my farovrite) Wizadry 8 (Very cool), theme hopital (altough it was ported to consoles), TES daggerfall (before TES got dumbed down for mainstream players, this one is realy hardcore, allot of glitches and bugs but ultimate freedom also)
Exhumed (Egypt FPS, so cool music)
Many of these games have great history (exhumed, doom) about their developers.
I love oldscool games, they where unpolished diamonds. Old games had more freedom, more challenge, and less noob friendly. Also part of the magic was that their was no youtube walktroughs, or google. U had to find (out) everything by yourself, if u where lucky u had some nerds friends who played the same game. And by finding out urself u got way more involved. Also the bad sprites or GFX let some space for own imagination (wizardy 8)
+ their was no DLC, their was community who produced their own shit for the good games!!

Man I miss this game so much. I remember being in Middle School and playing it online with a friend from school went by Frost, was good enough that he was accepted into the major clan back then known as iNi. To this day the melee combat they pulled off with every weapon having completely unique combat. The weapon swing was varied by your movement, heading and camera.
The skill level was crazy, I could hold my own for the most part but a true pro could cut my head off the first swing everytime... Reminds me of one dude we used to run into on some servers was a fukn straight ninja he'd hide in the most random spots and instantly dome you with a thrown hammer.
Man I could let the nostalgia flow for real so instead please lemme know if any of you got pretty into playing online back then.

The glorious, original Unreal Engine. I can't think of a game made with this engine that I don't like. From Unreal with it's expansions, passing through Unreal Tournament, to games such as Deus Ex. I bet someone is reinstalling Deus Ex after reading my comment.
The old PC gaming era, from the 90's to the early 2000's, was simply awesome. Well, the whole gaming in that era was awesome in general. Specially when Valve entered the market with Half Life, and Blizzard still making awesome, RTS games such as Warcraft and Starcraft. And with videoconsoles like the original Playstation, SNES, Saturn/Dreamcast, and the Nintendo 64. I'm really glad to be born in the 90's, but I really wish to live again in that era, having enough money to pay for everything.
That era when videogames used to look like videogames, not like movies. How do I tell all those AAA companies, that I don't want to buy interactive movies? Aside from not buying them, of course. I want my 90's experience back!

Yes. Today, every game is linear, casual FPS. Every game is boring, open-world RPG. Every game is pointless simulation. Look at 90 games! Not monotonous at all! Haha! Every game was unique at this time! No

GenosectKingRevived if you call cod and and battlefeild a generic fps every other game. There are more amazing games than ever including fps from triple a games like overwatch to niche fps like insurgency. You are just suffering from survivorship bias where all the shitty generic games from the 90s and early 2ks no one remembers because they were shit.

Worth mentioning that this and the pen and paper RPG were developed at the same time to create sort of a Rune franchise that never took off. The RPG itself is written by industry super star Robin D Laws and was extremely innovative for its time and contained features that I have never seen in another pen and paper RPG. The typical Game Master/Dungeon Master role actually shifted between players after each encounter and unlike other RPGs competition between players was highly encouraged. You earned points for not only defeating enemies but also for how you defeated them, most famously killing someone with their own severed limb got you a boost.
Both this game and the pen and paper RPG are worth seeking out.

That game was such a great thing. After beating it with multiple times, I still spent lots of hours in the arena mode that came with the Gladiator mod. Getting to doing all those combos by heart wasn't exactly easy, but extremely rewarding.
And the shadow casting was something to behold. Even nowadays I often think "why are those shadows so edgy and eat up like half of my fps when I switch them on when Severance made it with no loss almost 20 years ago?". That was literally miraculous!

So my sister, cousins and I played this game more than any other in our childhood. The sheer amount of fun games you can make up in multiplayer is incredible - from hide-and-go-seek (and murder) to playing soccer with a skull to playing in the huge arena with moon-jumping and only allowing throwing weapons. It was years before I even tried out the singleplayer.

If you play on the hardest difficulty, your combat strategies matter a lot. Even having a shield is pretty much a must. It's also great to make good use of the dodge mechanic if you've turned it on. Yeah, your enemies still attack you without second thoughts, but you have to be very careful how you go about attacking or sometimes avoiding them.

I played Rune when it first came out thinking it would be a game based on Viking history; raiding coastal villages, sailing, plundering, fighting. But when I saw it was a dungeon crawl against enemies that looked like they were imported from Half Life, I was let down in a big way.
So I put it away and forgot all about it, until a few months ago when I decided I would play it for what it had to offer. I ended up enjoying it for the most part. It looked and ran great on my PC. I played it on a Viewsonic P225f 21 inch CRT monitor that has since died on me. The game looked fantastic for being such a relic. There was a DX10 mod for it I installed that helped too. I don't know how it would look on a modern wide screen LCD. The Viewsonic was set at 75 hz and the frames were locked at 75 fps. Game looked gorgeous and ran butter smooth!
