Mang Tootz Food House is a famous Philippines food restaurant in Manila, located in the heart of the city next to University of Santo Tomas. Because it’s next to a major university, it attracts quite a crowd of hungry students everyday, along with anyone else passing by and ready to eat a delicious Filipino food meal and some of the best banana egg rolls (turon) you’ll ever try.
Mang Tootz Food House is a carinderia, a local style eatery, and to eat you go up to the front of the restaurant and pick and choose the different dishes you want to try. I got a plate of Bicol express, inihaw na liempo, sisig, chicken kebab, ginataang langka, and finally, their banana rhuma, which is what they call their version of banana egg rolls, or banana lumpia, or turon.
Out of the Filipino dishes I ordered, the Bicol express, a Filipino stew of pork with coconut milk and chilies, and the ginataang langka, a jackfruit stew with coconut milk, were my favorite dishes of the meal. The chicken kebab wasn’t my favorite dish as it was covered in a mayonnaise tasting sauce.
Banana-rhuma (turon) - Ok finally, when you eat at Mang Tootz Food House, the one sure thing you have to order is their banana rhuma. These little banana egg rolls are amazing, and you’ll see them at the front of the restaurant being made and deep friend. Many people come by in the afternoon and order only the banana egg rolls, just as a snack to go. They take a lumpia wrapper, place a piece of banana on the inside, wrap it up, and deep fry it in a wok to a crispy golden crunch. The banana egg rolls are then stir fried with a caramel like mixture, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I’m not a big sweets lover, but when Filipino turon are hot and fresh, they are truly amazing, and these were the best I’ve ever tried.
Total price for meal - 365 PHP ($7.34)

I love how welcoming every place in the Philippines has been about Mark filming. Here in the States, recording in restaurants is not always accepted. And I remember Mark also was not allowed to record in some places in Japan and China, I believe. I am loving this series! As a Filipino American born in the States, it has renewed my curiosity about my country of ethnicity. Because the Philippines has thousands of islands and provinces, I wish Mark could visit them all and film the sights, beaches, other hidden gems, though I understand it is not easy or always safe bringing Ying and Micah.

Love to see the different types of foods. I have had a lot of Filipino dishes. I work in a hospital so my coworkers are always bringing different dishes. There is still a lot more out there to try. Your videos make me one to try my hand at making some of them.

Unlike adobo, sisig is a very recent recipe invented in Pampanga using pig parts that the US Air Force Base throw away. Great beer companion. The person who invented it should have patented it... :-)

Lovi g your Philippines food postings. It's reminding me a lot of my experience when I went there but making me realize the food at each place is the same (lol but still good). Out of all the places you've tried with the "same" types of doors, which and from where are your favorite "same" dishes from.

  • @Aiafati

I hope you get to travel outside of Manila and try the food there instead. Oftentimes, dishes cooked by the locals in a certain region, with ingredients from that same place, just has more of an authentic taste to it. No disrespect to these carinderias, I'm pretty sure they are delicious especially if the people who cook it are really good and cook the specialty from their respective regions. But unless you go to the places where some of the food you ate in Manila have originated, it will always be an incomplete experience.
Try going anywhere but Manila next time and you won't regret it.
