Kelley was my favorite part of the Spirit's winning season, and gosh, this interview really puts her (and your, Sam) best qualities on display. Genuine, warm, funny, willing to go through the hard parts to get to the best bits. I know her teammates will miss playing with her, but I hope she continues to be involved, because she enriches all of us with her presence in and out of the game.

Kelly you're a Fing LEGEND. You've left everything on the field and gave us so much joy. Sam, your injury still makes me even more sad cause I KNOW you would have been a force for the national team in midfield. World Class players 👏🏽

Not a pro athlete, but as I got older into my late 30s climbing to near the peak of my career, I also realized I am just a number, and I am only as valuable as long as I remain useful to my employer. So you need to look out for your long term health and future, bc your employer/boss won’t care. They might throw a lot of money or opportunities your way, but they ultimately will squeeze out every bit of youth and energy you have for their profit or their careers.

Always ❤️ the interviews but nothing like Kelley . At least u lived ur dreams I'm a bit older than u guys as I had parents who stopped me from moving on to play collegiately bcz of the environment. To this day miss it and all my opptys I know would have happened. With that said I caught for 25 years so tell me about injuries esp knees and feet...that are hindering my quality of life...always tried to go to the best drs yet no resolve...so hear the tears loud. Bottom line the world is your oyster u can do whater u like

Hope Kelley looks into becoming an advocate for those in need - her empathy and motivation and heart are all gifts just like her athletic prowess. This episode is so agonisingly beautiful, the passion you both have for the game is so evident but goodness you've got me crying too. As someone living with chronic pain that stems from an experience where I was doing something I really loved, that conversation about whether you regret going to the 2019 world cup really hit home. Of course you don't regret it, but it's so unfortunate that the things that bring us so much joy can also bring us so much pain. Thank you for being so vulnerable, it is so appreciated.

Watching the TsT tournament made me hopeful for the retired players.
You can still be part of a great football experience and have fun with your friends for a week.
It's fun, they don't have to stay 90 minutes on the field and so many more advantages.
Like come on, next year Sam, Kelley and all their friends should totally be part of team USA or make their own team.

I have always enjoyed seeing Kelley on air as the interviewer on JWS for years. This episode with her as the interviewee with Sam was probably the best I’ve seen of both of them. I laughed and I cried with both of them. I especially didn’t have the latter on my bingo card this morning, but they were earned with their genuine vulnerability of their situation. Wishing both of you pain-free active years post-soccer. I hope to see more of Kelley in the media as well after retirement.

I've listened to a lot of podcast interviewing athletes but why this one stands out is because it tackled an active athlete grappling with the reality of retiring even though the spirit is still willing.
Maybe I read too much into this but the overall messages of acceptance, regret and finding meaning AFTER the sport you love...hit DEEP.
Like @ca2ne said, this should be viewed by all athletes not too far behind Kelly & Sam (in regards to retirement)

Cherish and embrace the moments when you are in the moment. Even when you think it is annoying and boring. Those are the moments you never get back or can relive. And with cherishing them, you can embrace that person in future moments. That is the evolution of aging and the point of being alive.

This was an interesting video. They are seeing the limitations of their bodies after having played a very physically demanding sport. Their comments about how injuries and father time have caught up with them is very similar to what male athletes have said as they entered the twilight of their careers. Missing the interactions with their teammates is a universal comment that people will always say.
Hopefully they will be physically healthy for the next stage of their lives. I wish them well for the walks with loved ones, little ones, pets, to the grocery store, on the beach, etc.

The first and only time I had the pleasure of seeing the USWNT in person was the final of the 2011 World Cup and I remember my 18 year old self rooting so hard for the US and seeing all the players on the sideline, Kelley included… after that I never stopped rooting for the USWNT even when they played against Germany… a part of me always wanted the US to win because the team spirit was something so unique! I watched so many games they played and Kelley has been my favourite player for years now because she’s just so electrifying and played so amazingly good! I really hope she takes the time to realise how much joy she brought to people all over the world… I think a big part of her legacy is that she made people a fan of whatever team she was on because her love for the game was so freaking inspiring!

I love the military the Army. I was a 32 year active duty Engineer. I was a paratrooper, air assault, I did marine amphibious training, Recondo training, I have always achieved maximum score 300-400+ on all my physical fitness test for 32 years straight, ran marathons, half marathons, etc... I was active my whole career. I decided to retire because I finally could not finish a 12 mile hike under 4 hours for the first time. I told my self, "if I can't do what my soldiers have to do, then its time to retire". So I reached the rank of E9 Command Sergeants Major and retired. I found out that I need double knee replacement surgery. I currently walk using Trekking poles till I get my surgery. I retired in 2015 and have been putting off the surgery. I do not regret all the fun and deployments, training, etc... that the Army put me through. As a leader I led from the front and did not let the pain stop me till it finally did. I enjoyed watching the USWNT win 4 World Cups and all the Olympic Medals. Enjoy your retirement and do what you need to do for quality of life. It sucks having to walk with Trekking poles. Don't get to the point where you can't fix your injury and end up disabled like me. Take care of yourselves. You are 30 years younger than me and have a lot more time to live for and do than myself. Set yourself up for success. Take care.

As someone who has had to reassess my life as an active person several times ... issues with chronic pain due to several injuries (herniated cervical discs at 24 and had my ability to play sports cut off at a very early age (15) due to cartilage issues in both knee caps) I really feel for both of you, chronic pain is no joke.
Hopefully modern medicine will provide options for good generally pain free life after professional sports.

To be honest, I waited a couple weeks to watch this episode because I knew how emotional it would be. Tonight I finally watched, and waited for the expected. Tears and tears. They came a couple minutes in and the grand finale was around the twentieth minute. Kelley was such a strong hold for the USWNT for years in the early 2000's, and seeing her feeling the effects of a broken body was so hard. Of course, she has Sam to confide in, who, at an even younger age, saw and felt the effects of an athletes body break down. I'm glad Kelley has so many supporters. I for one, was so devastated to see Kelley retire as her highest level, but as an understanding avid uswnt fan, I am with her 100% on her new journey forward. I hope she finds a career that suits her, may it be coaching or coffee, Kelley O'Hara til I die.
