  • Meriwether Lewis, commander of the famed 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition, returned home from this perilous journey with every hope of a bright and productive future. Yet within three years, the thirty-five-year-old Lewis was dead in a lonely inn along the Natchez Trace in rural Tennessee, the victim of two gunshots. Various medical and psychological theories have been proposed by historians and others to account for his mysterious death, which was originally reported as a suicide. Join authors Drs. David and Marti Peck as they draw on their professional backgrounds as a physician and a clinical psychologist to provide an indepth analysis of the various theories that still swirl around Lewis’s death.

They talked about how he could have survived the shot to the chest but never mentioned the head wound.

It actually sounds like an attempted suicide followed by a murder and robbery. But as you say, we'll never know.

This is as ridiculous of an explanation as any I’ve ever heard. When arguing one point you must always cover the previous points of other point of views. How can the suicide cheerleaders just skip over yhe bizaare actions of the lady at the inn??? And what about Lewis’s servant a 100 yards away???? She said she was afraid to help a dying man????? Really???? Amd that’s believable???? Its more believable she was TOLD to stay out of it. Yhe money he had on him was never retrieved. He was robbed and probably resisted and got shot. The inn Lady was then probably told that if she wanted any of the booty to stay inside.

Agreed and he did not shoot himself twice… i get that he had issues but people just don’t shoot themselves twice especially in the head and chest.

I was born and raised in 1948 at Deer Lodge, Mt. The branch that Clark explored. Deer Lodge is south of the headwaters of the "Clark's Fork River", which is about 40 miles (North) near Opportunity, Mt. I lived within playing distance of that river most of My life. Yup! G-G

This presentation was basically conjecture entirely based on discrediting other authors. Very strongly seems to be only another historical smear of the character of Meriwether Lewis. Hearing the description of Meriwether's tier one capabilities while at the same time making a case for his suicide... too much explanation without any explanation... Why tho? Words chosen very carefully, and knew right when to cut the questions off. Then made a joke about how "security will kill me". Wow just wow. And these men talking about Meriwether and trying to describe him as a man was pretty ridiculous. It was as though they were commenting on traits they themselves have only ever heard about and could never possess. I'm so tired of people talking about Meriwether like this.

There is a show called America Unearthed that looks into the same murder & Suicide question and was able to do a DNA analysis of the Masonic apron that Lewis had in his pocket at the time of his death & the results were that there was two blood DNA'S of two different people making it look more like a murder!

I watched that yesterday but that show was so sensational and full of such flawed logic and reasoning it’s entertainment at best. The DNA lab guy says well the blood or DNA we sampled could have been from anyone who’s handled the apron over the years (to conserve it, place it in the display etc etc) but the show’s host cuts him off and says yeah yeah well anything’s possible…so here’s my “FACTual” “theory”. This HAD to be what happened..case closed 😂 I think they also allowed him to get one tiny little swab sample to send in for testing.

Agree, just watched it and it's so biased and flawed, like he's only interested in proving what he wants to find instead of actually seeking out the truth. I guess the program is on brand for the channel, considering Ancient Aliens is one of their most popular shows. @@sashek8451

If he got shot and not stabbed, why would the kiIIer's blood on the apron? Also, you would think the killer would have shot and left, why would he have even touched his apron, esp. one still folded in his pocket? Not that the comment below didn't give the best reason why the blood wasn't proof (and why that show was flawed).

Not saying one way or the other, but it’s crazy suspect that Mrs Griner finds him (or anyone) in that kind of shape and doesn’t do ANYTHING to help or reach out to someone else to help. Just criminal IMHO. There had to be other men around, her husband, etc Was it just her and Lewis in the house alone!?
