    Really enjoy your reviews 👍 Your comments regarding particular characteristics are so true. That Yamaha motor is impressive for it's displacement. I have a 2020 wr250f and down here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 they are not restricted like the US models, basically a yz 250f motor. At around 160 pounds in riding gear I don't need a 450!!

    Have you tried the new 2024 yz250f yet? Im so torn between a 24 250sxf or the yz250f. Im just a C rider looking for the best option to hit the track and jumps with. Currently riding a 2023 250xc which I love in the woods, but unsure about it on the track and jumps. Thinking a 4 stroke might be the better way to go for that.

      I hope to get a ride on a new '24 YZ250F this spring. I don't think the engine will be much different but the quicker handling and narrower chassis should feel better. 23 KTM 250XC TBI is a very fun bike - lightweight/quick revving/no engine braking. 4-strokes can be more confidence inspiring on the moto track - especially when learning a new jump. I tend to learn a track and the jumps on my 4-strokes first then go out on the 2-stroke. Any 250F will be very fun and easy to ride on a track and they will feel less powerful than your 23 250XC. I had a lot of fun on my 23 YZ450F and did a back to back with a 22 YZ250F... ua-cam.com/video/9jk6kcBT-8E/v-deo.html

    Both great bikes, I have the new Crf & same yzf. Wrong on the Yzf with dust and dirt, it’s the worst filter cause in-traffic it becomes extremely dirty quickly.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  2 роки тому

      I think you get the same dust and dirt in traffic along with the bike's rear wheel dust being thrown up with a regular airbox design (like the CRF). The YZ250F air is also smaller with less surface area to collect the dirt so like you I have found it does get dirty quickly. The downdraft cold air intake on the YZ250F is good for making power - wonder if the all new 2023 YZ450F air intake system and shrouds will be much different from the current design?

      If you prefer mid to top end power and love to rev the bike and spend some money on dialing in the suspension the '23 KTM 250SXF is a great choice. If you like mini 450F style power with very good partial throttle torque feel (with a little less peak HP overall) and best in class suspension off the showroom floor hard to beat the YZ250F. I use the myKTM app on my phone and select the 21 KTM 250 Factory Edition (Troy Lee Designs). Then input my weight and rider skill information (I used Basic and 86 KG and 3 KG riding gear). I like the Enduro/Classic settings: Front 9.4 bar C18 R18, Rear C21 R20 and HSC 2.75....that is way softer than stock but works for my slow Vet speed on a rough moto track and also feels very good in the woods. Fast guys would not open things up this much. Just use myKTM app to get starting points - then dial them in for your riding. The key is I would not have some up with this combination of settings without the myKTM app. Does not cost anything to change clickers or fork pressure!

    1 or 2 on the back could make a big difference. Yamahas always have the same feel. Every one of them since like 1993 🤣 They always work well right out of the box for the weekend warrior. I just despise wrenching on them! It’s like everything is an afterthought to that brand’s engineers.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  2 роки тому

      Interesting to me the 2016 KTM 250SXF came with a 13/50 combo but the 2022 KTM 250FE has 14/51 - that is a big jump up. The new 250FE engine seems to make more power based on dyno testing by HP Performance YT channel and I like the long pull in 3rd gear on the KTM. The reverse head design on the YZ250F pulls clean cool air directly into a straight downdraft intake - perhaps this fundamental layout helps with the impressive partial throttle response and torque feel on the YZ250F. The stock KYB suspension on the YZ250F works for such a wide range of rider weights and skills from slow Vet guys like me to lightweight A-riders like my son. Wish KTM's came with KYB suspension!

      @@mxengineer1 my XC is a 16' and I put a 14 on it. The 3-4 gear spacing is a little wider on the XC but the 14 is what it feels like it should have come with for what I ride. 13 felt like I was in no-man's land in corners. 2nd now pulls most corners smoothly and 3rd revs out long enough that I rarely encounter the too tallish 4th except for on long straights. That said, I could see the stock gearing being ok for GNCC (which is what it was made for 🤣).
      My 200SX is also 14/45. The 125SX was 13/5X. I'm going to try a 13 first, because right now second is a little too strong for fast corners unsettling me and the chassis and 3rd is a little too weak to carry third when the ground is soft. Might work good for a hard-pack slick track like Washougal. I solidified this feeling when I rode it back to back with my nephew's boringly good YZ250F.
      Yamaha has always done a real good job with setting the suspension up to have good hold up. They always have a nice damping feel up high in the stroke that doesn't let the chassis have a lot of movement. The chassis rides like Jet Lawrence looks 🤣 The KTMs ride like Barcia and I look (sidecar monkeys).
      This is not just a KYB thing. I had Hondas and Kawis back in the day and their KYB stuff never felt like the Yamahas of the same period (which felt exactly like the Yamaha as of today 🤣). Maybe they have a steeper headtube and longer swingarm/wheelbase or something. Not sure, never looked.

      @@JohnHowerton137 Gearing is fun to play with and can help dial in an engine for your riding conditions. My older (pre 2015) 350XCF's came with 13/50 combo and I usually went to 13/51. My '21 350XCF came with 14/51 which works well for my light Vet moto and GNCC trail type riding. Some riders like the 13 CS for tighter more technical trails. Have not tried that yet.

As one engineer said to me in this discussion - people who chase MORE low throttle power - when their is more power to be had at said rpm at larger throttle openings - are foolish.
