It’s a old truck that I’d have to go start up 30 minutes before i leave my house because I have to make sure the engine will warm up because it’s so old and have to sit there and pump the gas to get it to start. The 1984 Corvette is a very reliable car when tuned properly and maintained. I have a 33,000 mile example! You have to rewind time and remember that was a huge era for emissions taking over and stealing horsepower.
Yeah. 75 was the worst. I love the car but the points I mentioned might be issues for other people. Also, I take back what I said about the spark plugs. After swapping the headers the spark plugs seem so simple. 😂
i have an 84 with 198k The gas mileage i swear seems better than my first 94 LT1, but i loved the LT1s power! but then again absolutely hated the distributor behind the water pump.
One of the best mods I did to my 84 was dump the crossfire intake and bolt up a holley tbi intake w/ a 350 truck tbi unit. That intake is good through 6500 rpm. The ecm & wiring hooked up the tbi unit and ran it just fine.
That's cool. I've always thought it was a possibility but I've hardly ever seen it done. My goal is just to make the CFI as good as it can be. I know I'm not going to make the most power but if that's what I wanted I would just sell the car and buy a C5. 😂
My dad has an 84 with 44,000 miles. He mentioned selling it but I think it’s cool. It has all of the common 1984 issues (courtesy lights etc) but I’m going to bring it back to life & run it around a little, personally, I think it needs some bigger wheels & tires, side pipes & a huge cam but it’s not mine
I used to hate '84s until I found myself owning one. I've owned several Corvettes over the past 35 years, all of which were C3s, and in reality, all of them had their own drawbacks, but they were fun to drive. My '84 actually found me through a family member that passed away. No one wanted to take the car as it was out of state and hadn't been driven in many years. I was the only one who stepped up to take it so that the departed family member's home could be sold. I paid a small amount of money to the estate and had the car trailered to my home. I was not excited about working on the car at all, but eventually, I got around to wrenching on it and got it running again. At this point, I was eager to get it running right, and I did. Yes, the car is not a street thumper, but when it is properly tuned, it is fun to drive. Mine will roast the tires, and the handling is good too. Where it is lacking is in the mid-range, at around 4k RPMs. The fuel pressure is key on this car. The fuel injectors need at least 13 psi to operate well, but I found that my pressure was hitting at 8-9 psi, so I rebuilt the throttle bodies (easy job), and went to a higher flowing fuel pump which made a huge difference with throttle response. I've thought about getting a Renegade intake to get better gas flow, and maybe even changing the heads and cam out as well, but I fear that the car will not be as reliable; also, once you start down the road to modifications you never stop. As for the targa top, I love it. Yes, you use a wrench to secure it in place, and it can take you a few minutes to take it off; I'm always able to do it by myself though. All in all, my '84 is a good driving car, and like any old car, it needs to be taken care of for it to remain reliable and nice looking. If I had one major complaint it would be that the mono leaf spring in the front will eventually need to be replaced, and you can't buy that part new anymore. There is no coil-over kit available either, so, you'd have to do some serious mods to get coil overs going in an '84. The '84 is not the ideal C4 to own, but it is still a Corvette, and it is a fun to drive.
@@jfisch I had to buy a used one off of eBay, but it looks really good. They'll wear out for sure, you'll notice the front end getting lower and lower.
Here in Germany 1984 was the last year for RWD Corollas. Of course I would choose a DOHC Corolla 16V over a 1984 Corvette. The RWD Corolla is much, much more fun to drive.
The fuel pressure is lower because of the throttle body injection. 13PSI isn't that odd when compared to other engines with TBI systems, like Chevy's 4.3L V6 and the 2.5L Iron Duke 4 cylinders. Always loved the C4. If I were to get any of them I'd get an 84, probably the same color yours is. Surprised you didn't have any mention of the digidash conking out.
@@scarea2691 I'll go with Tommy K on this one, the engine bay on these Corvettes are a breath of fresh air....calling them "cramped" shows everyone, they really don't know what their talking about. Better Boomer than milktoast Millennial.
my 1984 corvette was the first car I ever changed spark plugs on LOL. It was a pain in the ass but doable. My mechanic friend joked that he thought I would have to drop the engine to get it done
Well if you think that that’s a cramped engine bay you have not seen very many cars then. You did mention it’s your first car which means you are bold. If these cars are properly maintained which requires work and or money they are very good cars. Older cars have features that were either revolutionary in there time or quirky and abandoned in newer cars. The targa top has com a long way from it’s earlier versions. The C4 and it’s highly advanced (at that time) racing frame was not quit designed for a targa top but top GM brass placed the demand on the engineers to make it work. The strange screwdriver is actually just a simple ratchet wrench with a common torx screw driver head, which was designed to store in the center console. It’s a very educational first car, stay ahead of the maintenance curve and it will treat you well.
Yeah I agree about the frame not really being meant for a targa. Apparently when it's removed the car loses a lot of its rigidity but my solution is to just never take it out. Since mine is clear there isn't much reason to.
The 1985 Corvette is a better buy as you get the tune port injection, no more crossfire and the steering wheel is a bit thicker which I prefer, most people back in the day prefer the clear roof as it was impressive to the ladies back then. Mind you most people's cars did not have a removable roof that was clear and since the car was still considered new back then there weren't those stress fractures you mentioned in the glass roof.
Knowing what I know now I generally recommend an 88-89 car to people. Not only is that the best the TPI was, but there's also a lot of potential suspension upgrades on the 87 and later cars
Aside from the reason given "I don't know why GM rushed the 84 out with the Crossfire" when the T.P.I. 350 wasnt quite ready yet. It's like GM created a Bastard Child because when it's at a party....It looks like a C4...but people always point.... But I respect the Car man!! Love your video...well done!!!
@@jfisch I heard that the Design was ready in 1983...there are like two 1983 white Corvettes existing...one is in the Museum.......The TPI engine wasnt quite ready....so they just took the existing 82 C3 and used that engine
I know this is crazy.. but I have an 84 crossfire unfortunately.. but I’m thinking about buying a hellcat crate engine in to replace it. Upgrade the trans and boom you have a super light 700 hp machine
J Fisch I’ve been doing a lot of research on fitment to see if it’s even possible. Right now it’s mostly a pipe dream but who knows.. they started selling hellcat crate engines around $20,000 but now you can get one for around $15,000 if they get a little cheaper still I might pull the trigger
you know another idea is find yourself a wrecked 98 to 02 F body take the LS1 in the 6-speed out of it swap it in get you some 17 inch rims you got a killer
I got an 84 at the end of last year. Love the car so far, but it was cheap and for that price it came with a few issues. The plastic front and rear bumpers are warped and semi melted (I heard they all do that) and it has a high idle. I already found one vacuum leak and that helped the idle and stumbling a lot as well as the mileage but based on how much that helped and how it still has a bit of high idle and stumbling I'm betting there are more vacuum leaks left to discover. My fuel gauge worked when I bought the car but stopped working right after. It looks like it's not hard to replace the fuel pump and sending unit but it does cost a bit of money to buy a replacement part. The valve cover gaskets are leaking. I did the spark plugs the other day and like you said, they were tough to reach. Somebody also installed a manual fan switch in mine which is annoying sometimes because if you aren't paying close attention to the coolant temperature it can get too hot before you turn it on. I've seen automatic temperature switches that you can install that turn the fan on at 190 and off at 175 so I'll probably do that when I get a chance, I'm just not sure where I would screw in the coolant temp sensor that those auto switches come with. Whoever installed the fan override switch used those house wiring twist ends which is pretty gross to see in a car, and my battery did go flat the other day while parked for 2 days for the first time, been driving it for months and the battery never died before then so I'm not sure what caused it but the house wiring does not inspire confidence. All of my door and window rubber seals are dried and cracked and there is some wind noise in the cabin so those all need to be replaced. It shifts hard and I'm not sure if that's because of the high idle or because somebody increased the line pressure in the transmission to give "sportier shifts". It also came with aftermarket straight through mufflers which are really annoying to listen to, especially at lower RPM it just drones so loudly. I ordered some factory style mufflers so that should fix that. I would love to put some aftermarket headers on because the factory ones look incredibly restrictive. I also replaced one of the rubber seals that connects the hood to the intake manifold because it was so dried and warped and not sealing at all. Overall it runs and drives good, and it's pretty easy to work on and I'm really happy with it but it just needs a lot of TLC. Ideally someday I would like to get electronic exhaust cutouts so I could switch between quiet and high flow, get some aftermarket wheels since I'm not in love with the factory turbine style ones even though they are cool. The biggest thing right now is just getting rid of the part throttle and idle roughness which I'm 90% sure is just vacuum leaks, and figuring out where that house wiring goes and eliminate it. I traced one vacuum line that goes from the brake booster area down to the front left headlight area and then goes to a T and splits. One end of the split goes to a spherical ball by the headlight which I'm assuming is some kind of vacuum resevoir. The other end of the T had a long 3 or 4 foot clear vacuum hose coming off of it that was connected to nothing, which was the leak I was talking about that I plugged. The rest of the vacuum lines were all black but this one was clear so I'm wondering if it was aftermarket. It also had a slightly bulged and broken end on it as if it used to be connected to some fitting but got broken off. Well I plugged it and the engine runs much better now but I'm wondering what it used to be connected to. The windshield wipers used to hesitate and barely turn on before I plugged that leak, but now they come on strong compared to before. My next step is going to be to check the rubber seals around the two throttle body injectors and all of the rest of the vacuum hoses that come off of the intake manifold. I found many bolts just finger tight including the old spark plugs.
Good work. It's always nice when people decide to get these things up and running. Mine used to idle high too but I replaced a coolant temp sensor and now it idles around 600-700 rpm. Although when it's cold it'll shoot up to 1800 for a bit haha. Oh well. Sometimes with these old cars it's better to let the quirks go. 😂
Flip headlights breaking, interior roofing separating, vanity mirrors flopping, buttons breaking, LCD dash malfunctioning, muffler mounts rusting, oil pump failing, these are a few of my favorite things.
I was in 7th grade when these cars came out and they were technologically miles ahead of most cars on the road during that time. Horsepower wasn't bad considering similar cars had 190hp, we were slowly coming out of the seventies where horsepower was dismal for over a decade
With high torque a car should feel like a powerful car at low rpm but at high rpm it is way slower, compared to the lt1 for example. The torque starts to go down after 3000 rpm so basically the up to 3k the cars go the same and make the same power as well. Then after 3k the lt1 can continue with equal acceleration. So if you rev it only to 3k you won’t feel any difference
The reason most folks don’t like their cars is because they either don’t run well or they don’t know how to maintain them or both. Mine had .496” of lift and AFR heads. It also runs great. All the time.
Hey guys how reliable is the digital gauge cluster in these vets?? I heard that they have daddy issues sometimes please let me know I'm interested in c4 vetts to buy one thank you
@@jfisch awesome thank you my buddy in high school had a caviler z24 1986 model I think his cluster went out once but onther than that it has been reliable
Well, you can do the repairs on the gauge cluster yourself. It's not that hard or expensive. Batee.com is your bible for this kind of stuff. Usually the ground connection goes bad because of the light bulbs being too hot. It's just a matter of soldering a new connection and replacing the bulbs with cooler ones.
There’s nothing I hate about my 84, I’ve had it almost a year, I love the targa top, I didn’t but it to race so, 205 HP is plenty for what I do with the car, you don’t have to have the ratchet to remove the targa, they sell electric drivers too, I’m no mechanic but I know how to change spark plugs and the rewarding part of having to work on your own car makes it more desirable to drive, the targa is see through so you get more light in not for you to be looking at the sky while driving (use common sense) and the fact that it’s an old car really don’t have anything to do with anything, is up to you to spend more money into it to make it faster or make it sound better while you can spend money on a newer car to do the same, investing money in a car such as a corvette knowing you’ll never set that money back when you sell it is really a personal choice, in other words having an old corvette is like a hobby, you’ll never make money off of it but the satisfaction of having a pretty cool car to drive is priceless!! (I love everything about my 84)
Thanks. I should have a video coming out within the next couple weeks because I'm almost done with my header install. I'm just waiting on some short spark plugs to clear the headers.
Is it possible to write some private questions about c4? I live in Europe and from couple months I am thinking about this type of car. I am also about your age so I think it will be easier for me to talk with someone like you. Unfortunately I dont have Twitter/Instagram, but maybe you have facebook or email adress?
2 weeks ago I was pretty close to buy C4, unfortunately condition was awful. 3 simple questions: 1. How looks situation with power steering in your car? Do you feel it more like modern autos-smooth and easy or it works rather hard. 2. Buttons and switches-rather easy or difficult-especially those in steering wheel? 3. Seatbelts-they are tight when they are fasten? Because in Vettte which tried to buy they were very loose even when they are fasten with both people inside. Thank you in advance for answer
1. My wheel turns easily. It's starting to get a bit of slop but that's because my roads are garbage. 2. I don't quite know what you mean but all the buttons and switches on my car work easily except my cruise control, which doesn't work at all. 3. Sometimes my seat belts will tighten when I put them on and other times I have to pull out on them and let them back in to tighten them up.
I love my 84...its old and beat up just like me...a few mods and it has plenty of power for me...i would have to say the best mod was the dana 44 rear end
If he will take 8 he will take 5. The early 84 were all z51 but all 84 are stiff. Some people say it's the best handling vette ever made. You can get a 383 striker on eBay pretty cheap. Sorry so late
To me it would be worth it..puut some time into it and it would be an awesome hot rod. Let everybody think it's stock then smokum. Change dana 36 rear end to dana 44 the put a 373 gear in it
Spark plugs on many V8s aren't exactly easy to change. Too, a Corvette shouldn't have a cheap set of headers put on it. I've never gone cheap on headers and I have never been disappointed.
It had stock manifolds on it at the time and the headers I put on certainly weren't cheap. I made this video a long time ago too. Spark plugs are but a minor inconvenience now. XD
I had to have my grandpa help me make speaker mounts for the back because my 6x9's didn't quite line up with the mounting holes already there. Getting the speakers in the front required some custom mounts I bought off eBay. The radio itself was just a lot of wiring. My setup is really simple. If you want a really fancy setup I'd look at corvetteforum.com because they have tons of useful info.
Hey, I just got my 1st 84 C4. 18500 miles on it minor plastic problems that seem to plague everybody. Seems like a fun car, had 280Z's for most of my driving life and still have one. But they have electrical issues and I want something I can just get in and drive.
As the owner of a white 1976 Corvette for nearly 35 years, by far the main problem I have with the C4 is looks. It doesn't have any. It's very bland and boring. To me the 1968-1977 Corvette was the best looking car ever made, even better than the Jaguar XKE and late '70s Ferrari 308 GTS (Magnum PI) It turns more heads than any other car. Everywhere I drive it, it gets a lot of attention. The C4 would have made a good third generation Camaro, but it's just nowhere near exotic enough for a Corvette.
Ooooooo. Hard pass 😂 I'm not going to that much work for 4 cylinders idc how well they drive. I'd pay someone to do those. It is funny though since I made this video when I was so young. Now changing spark plugs seems super easy on this car
The 1984 Corvette came with factory shorty headers that came with factory heat Shields if you compare the after market headers with the air pump it might be a little different but the header's are The same unless you meant Long tube that's different and you will need to check your ground clearance.
I finished my header install last February. I made a video on it. It wasn't too bad. Getting the old manifolds out was pretty easy and my headers fit great.
"Getting better headers is a lot of money" man it's a $2,000-$5,000 car... it's not gonna break the bank. I spent way more modifying a new Volkswagen than a C4...

@@jfisch I had to buy a used one off of eBay, but it looks really good. They'll wear out for sure, you'll notice the front end getting lower and lower.
You can put coilovers on the later cars. 85 and after I think. I guess with the '84 we'll eventually be sol.
no reason to hate, you are blessed to have one... beautiful vehicle in the best year, best american car choose this or an 84 corolla stay positive!
Here in Germany 1984 was the last year for RWD Corollas. Of course I would choose a DOHC Corolla 16V over a 1984 Corvette. The RWD Corolla is much, much more fun to drive.
I have 84 runs well 70 k on it
The cars seem to be pretty reliable.
Frank Parkin I just worked on an 84 that had 24k miles it was mint

The fuel pressure is lower because of the throttle body injection. 13PSI isn't that odd when compared to other engines with TBI systems, like Chevy's 4.3L V6 and the 2.5L Iron Duke 4 cylinders.
Always loved the C4. If I were to get any of them I'd get an 84, probably the same color yours is. Surprised you didn't have any mention of the digidash conking out.
Haha. The digidash hadn't caused me any problems yet when this video was made.
I can tell you have never had anything cramped and hard to change plugs on.

my 1984 corvette was the first car I ever changed spark plugs on LOL.
I'm glad you enjoyed, and I'd have to agree that the release of the Crossfire was a bit odd. I enjoy the car but TPI is obviously better.
@@jfisch I heard that the Design was ready in 1983...there are like two 1983 white Corvettes existing...one is in the Museum.......The TPI engine wasnt quite ready....so they just took the existing 82 C3 and used that engine

Lol. If you could get it to fit. You do you.

J Fisch that probably makes a little more sense 😂
you know another idea is find yourself a wrecked 98 to 02 F body take the LS1 in the 6-speed out of it swap it in get you some 17 inch rims you got a killer
The car was not made for the LS1 engine
The plastics lasted an entire generation something you do not get in today’s cars - this is a pro
@@jfisch Thanks. I should probably replace my temp sensor too at some point just to get it out of the way.
Flip headlights breaking, interior roofing separating, vanity mirrors flopping, buttons breaking, LCD dash malfunctioning, muffler mounts rusting, oil pump failing, these are a few of my favorite things.
My next video will probably be about the 4+3 transmission if I ever get around to it. Let's just say the car is currently in the shop.
My mechanic bought a 1984 Corvette, it has faulty wiring, but it still starts up
That's good that it starts I guess. Some of my car's wiring doesn't look so good but everything works so I'm not touching that mess.
Haha basically. It pulls like a freight train then falls on its face.
I know it's cliche, but nothing an LS swap can't fix. Lol;
Targa doesn’t take 2 people my friend, only one!

(I love everything about my 84)
I know what you mean. It doesn't matter how much it would sell for if you never plan to sell it.
How bad is the emissions coming off from this car? I have the same car but if the emissions are really bad i dont know if i want to drive it much
Idk. I took the cat off mine but left the EGR. For how few miles I put on it I'm not worried.

Is it possible to write some private questions about c4? I live in Europe and from couple months I am thinking about this type of car. I am also about your age so I think it will be easier for me to talk with someone like you. Unfortunately I dont have Twitter/Instagram, but maybe you have facebook or email adress?
Other than my Instagram or here, no.
2 weeks ago I was pretty close to buy C4, unfortunately condition was awful.
3 simple questions:
Im 16 buying an 84 for 800$, guy says it needs an engine, is it worth it?
If he will take 8 he will take 5. The early 84 were all z51 but all 84 are stiff. Some people say it's the best handling vette ever made. You can get a 383 striker on eBay pretty cheap. Sorry so late

Haha too late for me but oh well. My 84 hasn't left me stranded yet but I wouldn't put it past it.
XD
I’m thinking about buying one, how hard was it to put in the aftermarket radio?
I had to have my grandpa help me make speaker mounts for the back because my 6x9's didn't quite line up with the mounting holes already there. Getting the speakers in the front required some custom mounts I bought off eBay. The radio itself was just a lot of wiring. My setup is really simple. If you want a really fancy setup I'd look at corvetteforum.com because they have tons of useful info.
Sweet ride bro ✌️

You should try changing the plugs on a Subaru BRZ.
Ooooooo. Hard pass 😂 I'm not going to that much work for 4 cylinders idc how well they drive. I'd pay someone to do those. It is funny though since I made this video when I was so young. Now changing spark plugs seems super easy on this car
It's around 45psi yes
The 1984 Corvette came with factory shorty headers that came with factory heat Shields if you compare the after market headers with the air pump it might be a little different but the header's are The same unless you meant Long tube that's different and you will need to check your ground clearance.
I finished my header install last February. I made a video on it. It wasn't too bad. Getting the old manifolds out was pretty easy and my headers fit great.
"Getting better headers is a lot of money" man it's a $2,000-$5,000 car... it's not gonna break the bank. I spent way more modifying a new Volkswagen than a C4...
It's a great car. I love mine.
Just the 1980s car had so so interiors..But we live to like them
