- Our DIY solar heater wall is up and operational, but we needed to make some improvements to help it run more efficiently. It's making a difference already!

THANK YOU for being here!!
My thinking watching you progressing this project:
-I would tear down the horrible concrete-plastic insulation inner-wall and would replace it with healthy and natural self standing strawball wall with clay plastering all around
-I would make sure to learn the proper function of a „Trombe Wall“, which is what you did and implement the features for the summer to make it a natural „air con“: in essence - openings north and tilting upper windows
-pergola to cut the sun in summer going high (and too hot)
I didn't see much of the bigger trees saved for the future saw mill. Oak would be a great one.
Only a true northerner would recognize the sound of a very cold, crunchy snow ❄️. Nice video.
Very true! 🥶
Very nice job on the wall!. What I did with my thermal wall when I built it a few years ago, is instead of having the empty space inside the wall I secured metal down spouts that I acquired. Painted them black of course. Huge amount of heat output compared to without them Steel roofing would work also. My 8x8 section had air Temps of 100 degrees plus coming out of the top vent during a sunny day, with outside Temps in the 20s. My fan would activate at 80 deg.
I’d like to hear more about that modification
Omg! You guys worked so hard! Hope you got some good, warm, cuddly down time together. Have to say, you made me feel so happy that I live in Arizona! 😉
Haha I believe it! We do have amazing summers though ☺️
Deciduous trees are ideal for your solar wall. Allow sun in winter and block it in summer.
I think this wall and clearing trees is a great idea, but DAMN, I’m going to do it in the summer.
Haha I hear you!
If i had that bobcat with dual thumb, i'd use it to pickup scrub by stacking on top of each other , makes the thumbs pickup better !
Oooo thanks for the tip!!
Have you considered adding a duct for each vent to bring the warm air closer to the floor?
Look into top handle chain saws for trimming, pruning, delimbing. They’re lightweight and handle well. I have an Echo and love it.
Sounds amazing! Thanks!
I’m exhausted just watching this!!! 😂 thank you for sharing your projects w us 😎 hope you got a day of rest and cuddles w the pups ❤️
Whew! I was exhausted for days afterward, that’s for sure! Lots of puppy snuggles 🥰
We go through our property every year and take note of all the dead or leaning trees and do a big cutting a few times throughout the year! City ppl don’t realize that there’s no need to plant more trees either!! The trees reproduce themselves ! 🙌🏼 this is hard long work! There’s the cutting tree down, then cutting in big logs, and we move them with skid steer to an open area where we then split the good logs for fire fuel! The pine and wet wood we use for our summer camp fires. The heavy and dry wood we use for fuel. This is an ongoing process! And you can never have enough fire wood! Happy cutting guys! 😉
Absolutely! That's the biggest question that I get from city people - "are you planting trees in exchange for the ones you cut down?" Trees are a wonderful, renewable resource and they replace themselves! I'm not a big fan of clear cutting, but selectively harvesting the weak, dying, or crowded ones (or for a specific purpose such as improving sunlight like in this project) is a great thing! Especially when you can then use the wood for firewood or building :) Like you said - it is A LOT of work though! Whew!
Good morning from Forest lake Minnesota!! You guys are so awesome! And you Crack me up!
Good morning, Pat!!! Haha we’re having a good time!
I love your teamwork. Reminds of when my husband and I started working on our place, many years ago 🥰
Love that! Hard jobs are always better to do together ♥️
Now all you need is some sunshine to see if you have any shadows left on your solar wall. Great job cleaning those trees out.
We have finally had a string of sunny days and it’s been amazing! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Ok. I CAN SEE YOU'RE MORE NORTH THAN US. BUT THAT'S FINE. I CAN REALLY LEARN ALOT,
Great video! See what you can do when you put your minds to it! Great teamwork by you two. Opening up that area will give you more sunshine on that solar heater system, opens up the are for more future projects, also with the idea of having a wood boiler in the future you have enough standing dead trees and trees already laying on the forest floor that you should be able to stock up on wood now and it'll be seasoned by the time you get your boiler. Also lol, the past couple of weeks we've had to double up on clothing going outside here in S.E. Missouri too! with temps and wind chills of -15 degrees F. Dang ole Arctic Blast lol.
Thank you so much! We’re pleased with our progress and hope to finish the rest this week! Ryan was able to bring his excavator down and grab a bunch of down trees that way, which was amazing! Stay tuned for an update video ☺️ and stay warm!! Hopefully it warms up soon for you.
Your little chainsaw😍 I need one bec that looks like my kinda fun!
I love my little electric for the little stuff!!! It’s agile and doesn’t wear me out :)
Nourishment - important 🍲Sweet dogs 🐶Stay well, warm and hydrated for the weekend. 😊🔥
Always! Great advice!
Great video 💚🌞
Thank you so much!
I'm affraid when hot summer is on you it will be so hot in there you will be looking for a way to vent that wall great idea tho.............
Nice videos, hopefully more people will find uses for solar walls. I wonder if a battery bank would last longer in the cold. Still won't be able to get the full change out of it but if you start with 20Ah instead of 1Ah, I would think it would last longer.
Great point!
🤣❤👍 love the ending, no! it wasn't !! Fun stuff!! Just practice more.
Haha we really struggled at the end there 🤣🤣
What area were you from?
Minnesota
Where in MN are you??? I’m just south east of the cities, in hastings.
Cool! We’re south of Duluth
Love the Duluth & Superior area. I'm from the UP
@@fredthegreg I've always wanted to visit the UP! I've heard it's beautiful :)
@@thehomesteadingrd yeah it is. Ontonagon, and the Houghton area is where I grew up. Hard winters, but beautiful summers on the lake. Lots of snowmobiling in the winter.
You can not save all the trees. Cut the broken one s. Keep the good looking and healthy looking once. .
For sure! Our forest is looking SO much better now that it’s thinned out and cleaned up. Looking forward to seeing it thrive this summer!!
