Hank, the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate your heart - your love and passion for music (which is awesome by the way!), storm chasing, weather, and even critters of all kinds. Thank you making this great video that helped me understand why when I was a kid (I'm still a 56 year old kid) I was struck by lightening while watering some yearling heifers under a chicken house with a sheetmetal roof on a dairy farm. My red heeler and I never should have been there. We both we standing under a soffit watching the storm, the torrential rain, and yes, the lightening show. The thing I remember the most was watching the hair on my red heeler suddenly rise up off her body then seeing the hair on my arms rise up then BAM! All I saw was red, the blood under my eyelids. It was so bright and hot! I ended up face down in manure ten feet away from where the lightening struck a hole in the roof behind us about 3x3. The inseam on my pants was blown open all the way down to my rubber boots which I was thankful I was wearing that day or I don't think I'd be writing these words to you. And thank goodness, my red heeler Queen Bee, lived too. Blessings.
medical studies have shown that a lot more people get struck by lightning than hospitals are fully aware of. Often those presenting at ER with lightning-strike symptoms are not recognised because medics erroneously believe that getting struck by lightning is a death sentence, and that lightning strike symptoms will mirror any other form of electrocution. Lightning strike victims who are not hit on the head have a very high likelihood of recovering with no, or minimal, lasting symptoms. I was struck on the arm and leg, and the medics were convinced I wasn't, because I didn't present with the symptoms they expected (of standard electrocution). But the charge with a lightning strike mostly discharges over the outside of the body, instead of entering the body and passing through it like electrocution from an electric device or the mains, which involves physical contact with the electrical device. Even though they could see something was wrong with me on the heart monitor, they thought I'd had a mini stroke, and wouldn't believe me. It was only after looking into the medical literature that I found that most medics have no clue what the real symptoms of lightning strike are, (there's actually a paper covering the fact that most medics when surveyed were found to be ignorant) and that my symptoms were entirely typical of a lightning strike victim. And after that I found many other people who had experienced the same thing. Lightning strikes are actually very common, and not as dangerous as you'd think. The real danger comes if the strike hits the head first. Or passes through the heart. Then it is more likely to be fatal.

I stumbled across your youtube channel a few months ago and just wanted to say thank you for all of your explanations and incredible footage of weather phenomena. I have been watching your channel since around 2010 and I swear I learn more watching a few of your videos than I do and entire week of school lol! Love the content keep it up man! You are an inspiration to my photography obsession
YOOO Pecos, my science teacher is making us watch this video and it's awesome. I didn't think he would show one of your videos. At the time it's 1:55 rn. Keep up the good work on your videos Peco!
I was never afraid of thunder and lightning as a kid, I find it beautiful. As an adult, I still feel the same with caution though because, sudden thunderstorms can damage appliances
Taking a deep dive into your channel is by far the best thing I've done during the quarantine. I forgot about all of the craziness happening and felt like I was there with you on all of the vacations and storm chases you've showed us here. You're work is always incredible, but it's especially meaningful at the present time. Thanks for providing some joy Hank, I'm sure I'm not alone here.
I have been struck twice on the ground and a few times in the air. I was towing a aircraft into it's hanger just as a large storm was approaching. The lightning hit the tail, through the plane, the tow bar and into the tug. Later you could see where a bolt hit the blacktop, went into the rebar, ran across the ramp about 50 ft and then blew out a chunk about 3 inches wide when it left.
Yay! Hank is here. Thank you for the informative video. Yes, I waited till it was over to comment. “A bolt of the blue” was fascinating! Pos/Neg was super educational. As we head into storm season whilst homeschooling, this is definitely a lesson in Science. Thank you, Hank. Sending love, healthy health and best wishes to you and the Mrs. xoxo

@Pecos Hank Many thanks to you and your lightning gurus for such a great explanation. I've been in software engineering for 30 years. It saddens me when technical people can't find a way to explain something to people who are not technical, in a way they can understand it. You definitely achieved that goal. Kudos!

Wow, Hank, you did it again. Thank you. I actually learnt something! I got 7 out of 8 of your Positive or Negative guesses,.. the last one threw me, but hey. :D
Finally, a good video explanation of lightning. Most lightning information available online is outdated and doesn't consider the bidirectional and bipolar nature of lightning. As an amateur lightning researcher myself, most of my knowledge on the subject is courtesy of Tom Warner who has made an outreach to the public with his research, and is well-known within the community of lightning enthusiasts. Hank has produced incredible images and videos of lightning over the years which is some of the best I've seen-- in terms of both the flashes captured and the production of the images. I wish him continued luck in the future. EDIT: Some people are asking about the differences in sound between the two polarities. Here is a video from my channel that has examples of two high peak-current -CGs and one +CG: ua-cam.com/video/XYum6H0HgV0/v-deo.html
Uh-oh! I'm your 13th like. Somebody come quick, and please help me! I want to get out of this #13 spot with the like to your comment. Yes, the Southeast is facing the possibility of tornadoes, and I've lived through two of them, both occurring in April: the first on 04/04/1974 at 5:36 A.M, and the next one on April 4th, 1984 at approximately 1634-1635. That second was a multi-vortex tornado that damaged the front of our house and threw mailboxes and cars down the street. It also destroyed several duplexes down the hill from us.
The Lightning Hunter: We’ve seen lightning moving in more than two directions, so why would you refer to it as “bi-directional”? Wouldn’t the correct term be omni-directional?
@@nanwilder2853 "Bidirectional" means that both polarity leader trees propagate at the same time. Often you have both polarities creating elaborate trees going through opposite charge regions. In more complex flashes you even have sections of the leader network "cut off" and then these start growing bidirectionally -- again, referring to both polarities often making elaborate trees which move in many directions as you describe. Back in the day, we thought that leader trees initiated at a certain point and they were all either positive or negative.
Whaaaaaaat? That “bolt from the blue” usually being negatively charged is totally new info for me. I was under the impression they were ALWAYS positive. The ones I’ve experienced have usually had that percussive “crack” normally associated with positive lightning, to boot. Maybe that’s a myth as well?
A few summers ago, I was in a motorhome in a middle of a field when a huge electrical strom appeared. I was always told that being in a car was one of the safest places to be during a lightning strom, but I was in a fiberglass bodied motorhome. I thought for sure we were going to get hit by lightning in the middle of that field, but we didn't. It's kinda scary being the tallest thing in a eletrical storm.
Almost six decades on this planet, and nobody has ever explained the lightning phenomena as well as you just did.
Had lots of help from my lightning gurus Tom Warner and Mike Oneill. Cheers Turbo!

Thanks for the video, Hank! Awesome as always!
Thank you Mr. Hank, you we're really good at explaining thunder and lightning so I could take notes for may essay!
*my
I have been 15 years on this plattform and love educational videos, and this is the best most well laid out video on HOW LIGHTNING WORKS that has ever been published on the net.
The legend himself is back! Stay safe out there, Frank, and stay safe inside to everyone else.
AmesaceGaming AGREED MAY THE CORONAVIRUS DECIDE NOT YOU TO BE WORTHY YOU MUST SURVIVE FOR US AND OUR HAPPINESSSS
Frank?
Pecos Frank!!! Keep 'em comin' Franko!
Love your work mate! Appreciate the quality of your videos and cheers from Australia!
One of the few times where I put sleep on hold because gosh dang I am watching Hank first!
I feel you dude these videos are addicting
I have been watching your channel since around 2010 and I swear I learn more watching a few of your videos than I do and entire week of school lol! Love the content keep it up man! You are an inspiration to my photography obsession
YOOO Pecos, my science teacher is making us watch this video and it's awesome. I didn't think he would show one of your videos. At the time it's 1:55 rn. Keep up the good work on your videos Peco!
Just showed this video to my five year old and she says “hey! Lightning isn’t so scary! It’s pretty!” Thanks Hank!!
Cringe. This is going on reddit lol. 5 year olds don't talk like that. Stereotype facebook mom
@@slizzardshroomer9666 They can talk better than you think, it isn’t weird for a kid to say something as simple as that
@@slizzardshroomer9666 umm wut
I was never afraid of thunder and lightning as a kid, I find it beautiful. As an adult, I still feel the same with caution though because, sudden thunderstorms can damage appliances
@@slizzardshroomer9666 your parents didn’t show you how cool lightning can be when you were 5, and it shows.
I like de-stressing watching Pecos Hank's Lightning and Tornadoes. Soooo relaxing.
Crew chief?
I watch this video every summer once the storms start rolling in. Such a fantastic video.
Yay! Hank is here. Thank you for the informative video. Yes, I waited till it was over to comment. “A bolt of the blue” was fascinating! Pos/Neg was super educational. As we head into storm season whilst homeschooling, this is definitely a lesson in Science. Thank you, Hank. Sending love, healthy health and best wishes to you and the Mrs. xoxo
I love ground-up lightening. Fascinating.
I see a new Pecos Hank video, I click like. Howdy, Hank!
thank you hank for these very cool videos!!!
Sooo...... actually probably the happiest person to have Hank here because I absolutely love weather, and he’s taught me a lot and is helping me along the way! I know I’m too young to decide......but I really want to be a meteorologist and this is really cool to see! Thanks so much Hank!
Awesome video man, I just learned a lot about the different strikes watching your video. Thanks for making it!
I enjoy your videos especially because of your voice, it's comforting.
Hank I discovered your channel about a year ago and I am hooked. I've always been excited and curious about thunderstorms and tornadoes, but you present the information in clearly and without over-simplification and missing details. It feels like we in the passenger seat for your adventures and it's a comfortable format. Keep it up and stay healthy.
So happy ur back Hank! Keep up the great work!
My 9 yr old daughter and I liked this video so much we shared it with her teacher to show in class. So amazingly well explained and interactive too. Love it!!!
Oh my goodness! Every time you discuss lightning I seem to gain more and more appreciation for it than I already had. Thanks for the knowledge!
First time i've seen 1,1k likes and 0 - ZERO - dislikes. And you deserve it! Thanks for another quality content video! Cheers from Holland.
This guy has got to one of the best storm chasers ive ever watched he is so knowledgable and kind as well keep up the brilliant work hank!!!!!
I swear as soon as I saw this notification I started crying, I'm so happy I got the notification for once in my damn life, I also definitely want to know how lightning works
Little Miss Lowlife - 😂 I don't have notifications turned on so it's kinda like the old days when you were expecting a phone call - you'd pick up the receiver really quickly to make sure there was a dial tone ☎️
How does lightning work? Let's change the subject.. I like this guy!
I know you put a lot of work into these videos, but man I wish there was more to watch. I love your music, your positivity, you kindness to animals and humans alike, and your insanely nuts adventures you share with us people who could never consider storm chasing.
Can I please get a heart it would make my day and I been watching you for 2 years
Yes I at least got hank to high light my comment
@@newtcracer1167 Cheers dude!
@@PecosHank so sweet
Literally cant wait til tornado season comes into full effect. Love your videos ❣
Never clicked so fast. Love u Hank & keep up the good work
Man, hank always finds a way to make me intrested. Ive always wanted to learn a little about tornados and lightning, etc. Thanks for your work and your reserch.
Clear, concise, extremely informative and delivered with a buttery, smooth voice.
Came across your Channel and LOVE IT! Our home was struck by a large tornado two weeks ago and I have been fascinated ever since! My family is safe (we were in a closet under our staircase). Love learning how all of this stuff works. Your channel is amazing!
New Hank vid LETS GO!
bringing something to smile about while in quarentine!
@Pecos Hank Many thanks to you and your lightning gurus for such a great explanation. I've been in software engineering for 30 years. It saddens me when technical people can't find a way to explain something to people who are not technical, in a way they can understand it. You definitely achieved that goal. Kudos!
I have a degree in meteorology and none of my textbooks discussed Lightning like you just did. Nice work.
I’m scared of lightning and my anxiety kicked in while watching this video.
@@Gaudine I have it too and still sleep in the basement sometimes at night. If it’s really bad. Daytime doesn’t bother me much at all. Hang in there
Man those visuals explaining the movement of lightning was really well done and really helpful! Thanks to you I got every question in the test right
Really enjoyed this as always, thank you!!
I’ve never clicked faster, love the videos Hank!
Pecos, you did it again!! you created another amazing video and taught us a lot in the process!!! This is how all storm chaser videos should be!! You get into the thick of it like a good chaser would and you also share and pass on very important knowledge to the folks who are not as familiar with weather! You are a great content creator and I think you need a TV show
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. My sons loved it. The pop quiz part was amazing....my husband and I joined in as well. I was a beautiful family moment learning about something old but very new. Many thanks!
Sometimes I'll come along a video on this website that's so good that it forces me reevaluate every other piece of content I've seen on UA-cam. This is one of those videos. Great job!
Wow, Hank, you did it again. Thank you. I actually learnt something! I got 7 out of 8 of your Positive or Negative guesses,.. the last one threw me, but hey. :D
I got everyone wrong 🤣 maybe I'm dyslexic 💚✌🏻💚
Ah, there's my Storm Deprivation Syndrome again, making the quarantine so much easier.
Finally! I've been waiting for this!! How's the storm season looking so far Hank?
Ask me again in a week. Cheers Vincent.
You did a wayy better job than Nat geo wow
One of the best videos I've seen on UA-cam, regardless of the content, the informativeness and knowledge packed in it and the way he explains it
Finally, a good video explanation of lightning.
@@heatherstub April 4 happens to be my mother's birthday.
It's kinda scary being the tallest thing in a eletrical storm.
this video is the best video on lightning on youtube. Thanks for sharing your insight.
im always on the look out for well explained lightning videos like this and they usually suck but this one was actually easy to understand
