I've been thinking about this video. It is just really good.
At the baseline, this is a really strong presentation. Really good camera work, and really well recorded.
A stellar group of musicians. I count the vocalist among these and like the way she is treated as just another musician / soloist, for example Dr. Smith solos after she restates the head at the end. (I think this is the trend now, count the vocalist as part of the team, and not the big cheese.)
on this great team, though, Mr. Ton van der Kolk is holding everything together. carrying everybody on his shoulders by his dance. This cat is valuable. Is that a semi-hollow telecaster bass he's playin'?
And the flugelhorn player is something else. Jan van Duikeren (if I watched the full 90 minute vid I'd no doubt have more praise for the others; for example the drummer in a group like this is critical and might be easy to take for granted 🙂 )
Thanks so much for you kind words Dan. Best, Ton
and by the way: it's an 1964 Harmony H22 hollowbody bass
@@MusicandmoreNl078 Impressive - you and your gear is solid, bra
Brilliant horn section. Great arrangement.
Thanks so much
Phil Martin layin' it down from get! This made me get up from my couch ('twas a random youtube selection in the autoplay cue) to find out who these performers are. Nice energy/vibe all!
Thanks so much! Did you check out the whole show as well ?
Version bien étrange comme j,aime avec des bons chorus
Jan took lessons from F. Hubbard on flugelhorn-------bravo

Sweet.. Dig this. Very nice
Fabulous album, and a quality 'Live' version of 'Little Sunflower', the whole album is fab from start to finish- One of the Jazz Highlights of the year for me so far !!
Gorgeous
Wow - high musicianship
Another chance to spout off!
This is an interesting song with an interesting history. The original (Hubbard) is AABBAA (each 8 bars). Inspired by this version, I created one just to help me get my brain around it. Then I played at two different jam sessions where it was played. Even advanced players got confused with the form. If one listens to versions since Hubbard's, you can get AABB (as in this Jazzinvaders version), AABBA, or the original form. (I suggest at jam sessions some communication beforehand 🤠)
this is REAL jewel!
Haha, thanks!
lovely
Amazing.
Thanks
Super Geil
;-)
Jan is the man!
Haha, we'll tell him
078Beatclub please do....as a fellow flugelhorn/trumpet player...I am a huuuuuuggggeee fan. ^_^
I agree. His playing is right out of the top drawer. It's no wonder Lonnie uses him on some of his own European dates, and I believe he plays with Candy Dulfer too (we'd all like to do that of course ;)
