Best tenor solo. Guido is amazing in this. I've heard this cut about 300 times and I still love it (I work for Drake Mouthpieces). There is a kind of beautiful math opening here, I love it. Thanks for posting.

Haha you're right... it's some amazing playing! By the way... maybe you can somehow add a link to this whole concert at the Drake website ? Would be highly appreciated.

Indeed they are. if they were from the States instead of the Netherlands, they'd be world famous. Nice that Lonnie recognises their talent enough to work with them when he's in Europe. Jens on trumpet is especially good - world class I'd say. I just love his playing. Check out the video with the whole of this concert (it's here on UA-cam) to see more.

At 8:52 he claws at the keys like a pissed off cat. I don't understand how anyone could pay to see this guy and not feel they'd gotten fucked over.

You're an idiot if you think this guy can't play. I'm going to assume you posted this on cringe. I bet you have no idea who Lonnie Smith is. Onto his performance, it wasn't terrible in the slightest, the bit you are referencing was definitely interesting but that aside I don't think anyone can listen to this and think "wow this guy sucks, he's so terrible that anyone who could have possibly payed to see him got fucked over". That's the biggest pile of hyperbole bullshit I've heard insofar. I can also bet that you don't play an instrument, and I'm not insinuating that you'd need to be a musician to comprehend this man's playing, I'm insinuating that someone who'd leave such an idiotic comment wouldn't know shit about music.

WELCOMETOCARLSJR Yeah man, I mean, wtf? Just saw this on /cringe and I have no idea why it's there as there's nothing wrong with it, I actually liked this a lot. Some people just don't have the guts to digest jazz, I suppose.

I am aware of Lonnie Smith's history. I know who he played with in his younger years, and I know he was responsible for some fantastic organ parts...40+ years ago. I simply think he's past his prime and unable to improvise as well as he used to. I do in fact play an instrument. I've played with multiple groups over the years, all genres, including jazz, with a wide variety of people of all ages. I know an over inflated musical ego when I see one, and unfortunately they run rampant in the jazz community.
From that standpoint, when I watch the accompanying band in videos of Lonnie I just feel bad for them. He takes these songs in completely bizarre directions with seemingly no respect to the rhythm or feel, rarely hinting at any musicality. I admit there are good moments, but 6:11 is another example of a moment, after the tenor solo ends, when he completely kills the groove with a bullshit "introduction" to his solo. Watch the expressions of the other musicians. They even laugh at him sometimes. The keys player behind the horn and the saxophones has better chops than Lonnie. He's indulgent and not cohesive. My opinion is that Lonnie surrounds himself with great musicians (all the accompanying band members are brilliant) because he is still able to garner high paying gigs, and he relies heavily on the legendary sound of his Hammond organ to help him sound better than his own limited musical ability will allow. Watch his other videos - no one, other than his alto sax, accompanies Lonnie more than once. He has a different drummer every time. What does that tell you?
Everything about this guy is phony. His "Doctor" title. His turban. It says right on his wiki page that he is not Sikh, but the turban is simply a "stylistic" choice. People have the right to wear whatever they want on their heads, I know, but why would he wear a turban unless he was going for a very specific appearance. It's all part of an image he has created, and sold, and you guys bought it at first glance.
I guess I'm in the minority though. It's just my opinion.

Let me - as being one of the musicians on stage - assure you: it's nothing but a pleasure playing with Dr Lonnie. He doesn't read notes, nor does he care about technical stuff, it's all about feeling which means its always an exciting adventure to play with him because you never know what might happen or which direction it will go which is exactly what this music is about, a journey, sometimes good, sometimes less (although i can't remember that last part). Besides that we asked him to play with us, not the other way around. I'm not quite sure what your problem exactly is but to us (and many others) he's still one of the biggest Hammond players around and we love him, not only for that but also as a beautiful person.

Part of his playing is a little annoying though
