She's a bit safer and more knowledgeable than Treadwell tbf. But I don't like her grabbing onto wild animals. Wildlife documentarians don't do that with elephants or rhinos so why sharks?
@@ghostshirt1984So far. She'll be bitten eventually just as that other woman researcher was. Can't remember her name but it was an older woman that was similar to Ramsey with her hand on approach.
When you have any job with any animal (even domestic pets) it's only a matter of time before one hurts you even accidentally Keep in mind most shark "attacks" are just exploratory bites, so if a great white or tiger shark giving a curious little nibble is bad imagine what they'd do if you actually piss them off
I agree. And the Backshall post was a joke too. May be she is a good scientist and all that but she messes about with wild animals and I don't think that's very wise at all. Sure it looks good for a video, but it's kinda silly out of that context.
@@RabidGerry Another guy who messed with the wrong animal was Steve Irwin, the loud or passionate Aussie nature guy who felt the sting from a ray. I believe that because of cage-diving businesses and researchers, small boats off a coast in a shark habitat area attracts sharks as they're expecting food from chumming, etc, or fishing when a shark will take the catch. It's not a nice watch when you know wildlife is being messed with.
No one should be touching wildlife. They have enough problems without stupid humans trying to manhandle them. That video of her jumping on the shark and riding it is horrifying.
Well I picked up a squirrel wrapped up in my hoodiethat I noticed it was behaving strange (Scotland no rabies) and took him to the vets. Ragnar the red made a full recovery and was released back to the wild. Through admittedly I am a biovet so it's easier for me to spot and understand why an animal was in distress
@@grandmyotismon That's very different. I feel it's perfectly acceptable to help an animal in need. The problem is when the animal is perfectly fine, minding its own business. Thank you for helping them and I'm so glad they made a full recovery!
people seriously think ocean Ramsey is a better scientist than the actual shark scientist. in studying biography a pretty important rule is to not interfere with the subjects. that's literally ocean Ramsey's entire gig. I wouldn't even just walk up to a dog and start petting it but that's exactly what ocean Ramsey does. unacceptable practices.
Absolute rubbish. How to we observe how sharks can interact with humans without interacting with them... this guy sits at his desk thousands of miles from the sharks and bitches about people that risk their lives to show us more about them.
@@h00kie that's not the point of studying animals in their natural environment. there's a reason why we try to avoid interactions with the subjects. your take is kinda stupid and misses the point of biology entirely.
This honestly highlights the issue today that people simply cannot handle criticism. Actual, honest criticism doesn't come from a perspective of personal attack (ad hominem) or necessarily a moral stance. Healthy criticism should be embraced. But people simply seem to be incapable of that anymore. They immediately take it as a personal attack, get defensive, and double down. This extends way beyond the sphere of science.
It's not that people today can't handle criticism. People in general can't handle it and also couldn't in the past. In my opinion, it's likely a matter of socialization; we don't get taught things like "how to handle criticism" or "how to communicate and enforce your personal boundaries" growing up, even though those things and so many more would be super helpful. There's always hope for the future generations.
The whole reason why I started watching your channel was because of your view on Ocean Ramsey. People love sharks and are fascinated by them but she really implies that these apex predators are kind of cute and lovable and if you just know how to handle them in the water you'll be fine we'll NO!Somebody will be killed one day by a shark because they think have the right to touch them or worst still ride on their back. I'm with Shark Bytes 100%!
I think they're cute and lovable from 100 miles inland. If I wanna play with one, I can get a stuffed toy made at a factory. Also 100% with Shark Bytes.
I am with shark bytes too. I have a friend who was bitten by a shark while diving though he wasn't doing what ocean ramsey does he was teaching a diving class and didn't notice the shark was there until he kicked it. it wasn't the sharks fault and it wasn't that big of a deal (he didn't need stitches though he did have a few scratches) but they are dangerous animals and not respecting them can have consequences.
Same for me. It's tiring to see the same virtue signaling comment under every shark video about how they are misunderstood and aren't hostile to human, etc. Sure, they're not Jaw-like monster, but they're not puppy either. They do kill people every years and people need to understand that while they're not bloodthirsty monster out for your blood, they're still dangerous animal you should stay warry off.
Influencers claiming others with legitimate criticisms of them are "trying to piggyback off their fame" gives off serious "OMG, why are you so obsessed with me?" kind of vibes. It's far more telling about them than it is the other side.
Yes, it is an immature response. Granted, the internet is a brutal place, so perhaps it turns some creators defensive. Still, I say, "Don't give yourself anything to be defensive about. Then you can just ignore the lunatics making unfair criticisms online. It is only the reasonable criticises that will get any traction."
As a veterinarian with significant wildlife experience, many of these wild animal inter actors are satisfying some sort of psychological need/desire to exhibit mastery over dangerous predators. If there is no organized study developing data enlightening the understanding of the species then purposeful close association with predators is either motivated by profit or (and?) self gratification. At the very least these purposeful interactions are effecting the human/predator behavioural dynamic, at worst they are altering the stress levels of the predator. Sorry, excuse me while I snap a selfie with this grizzly bear.
That was pretty much the case with Timothy Treadwell aka The Grizzly Man. He claimed he had some special bond with grizzly bears. In reality they merely tolerated him and eventually it ended quite poorly for both him, his girlfriend and a bunch of bears who had to be put down due to them having gotten too used to humans because of Treadwell's behavior.
@@Khenfu_Cake tradwell was clearly dilusional. he, as far as i know, wasn't doing it to profit, or offering to take groups along with him (for profit). he didn't seem to need fame, which i see with Ramsey. She's quite pretty too and is probably using that to her advantage. I can't think anyone could watch his videos and not see some mental illness in the mix. apparently he was addicted to drugs or alcohol. he went on a trip to Alaska and he got hooked on the bears. he basically traded one addition for another...both deadly. I think he needed an intervention...
@songbirdsinging1878 yeah.. I watched some of his interactions. He treated bears like someone treats their pet cats. Actually, I have cats. I don't talk to them like that 😅
@@moon-moth1 They did. Treadwell had conditioned the bears to not be wary of humans and it had led to some tense situations already, so the authorities decided they had to put them down. Treadwell may have genuinely loved grizzly bears but his behavior ultimately only brought more harm to them, himself and his loved ones. I fear Ocean Ramsay's behavior might end up in a similar outcome, especially with her teaching people it's okay to touch sharks. She may claim she's not directly encouraging people to do what she does, but I fear people will watch what she does more than listen to what she says.
I will say it again, Mr. Parton; if you see a woman being a fool, you have every right to call her out. You are *not* a sexist pig, you are a wise and honest man who cares about the safety of others.
This is just how low the bar is. People are called sexist, racist, blah blah blah over the dumbest things these days. Jesus I was called racist for not liking Batwoman (because the writing was garbage, not because the main character was black)
She should talk to whatever survivors of Taffy 3 are still alive. A breakdown in communications following the Battle off Samar meant that sailors were floating adrift for a couple of days, and the Oceanic White-tips got a few of them.
That is a bit of a stretch. Its like, if someone is being annoying near me, I'm not going to call it abuse but someone of a more animalistic mind would likely get violent in response. One of these days a shark is going to take a chunk out of Ramsay.
I think "abuse" is excessively strong. "Harassing" is a strong enough term for the needless and disruptive touching of such wild animals. There's really no need to jump to extreme language when an accurate description is bad enough.
@@Robespierre-lI blame it on me being no native speaker,) Well, it was strong and I could/should have used softer terms. You are absolutely right about that. But that often doesn't get heard. And I often find to many people whitewash things and that may downplay it, even encourage others to follow.
Some colleagues were working on measuring cortisol levels in pilot whales in the south of Tenerife, which are harassed by high noise levels from fast-ferries and tourist boats, and have found that populations more subjected to noise and humans have higher cortisol levels and reduced life expectancy. Stress is not something that applies only to cetaceans but to many marine organisms. So yeah, Sharks changing their behaviours because of stress? That can happen. Stressed sharks willing to stay in stressing environment because they do feeding? I've seen that too! In the Maldives the guys feed the nurse sharks in the stairs of some ports, and the sharks climb on each other to get the food. Conclusion: people, just admire nature. The problem is that we confuse admiration with domination.
Honestly, I heard about Ocean the first time on your YT channel.. Curious, I watched the video with the great white and was horrified. As a scuba diver, the first thing (well, let's say one of the things) we learn is, NEVER TOUCH ANYTHING IN THE WATER! Respect the life there. We are only guest, visiting this environment. That many animals in the sea can be harmful, is a fact and a good reason only to observe with the eyes and eyes only. As a scuba dive rinstructor, it is the first thing (well. let's say one of the things) I teach my scuba diver students, NEVER TOUCH ANYTHING IN THE WATER! Or as we always say.. We take down our air and bring back up memories (and in same cases some found trash). Please continue with your channel. I really enjoy to watch it. It is OK, if my comment gets unnoticed as long as the message above is in the minds of all your YT visitors. Cheers
Kristian Vs Ocean?? I know who my moneys on....the actual shark scientist!!! Go Kristian-always love your vids on a Sunday night, they're so informative and backed up with actual (and understandable) science. Keep up the good work Kris and...... Ocean Ramsey? Bog off.x
OceanRamsey is famously an influencer. She knows exactly what she’s doing when she cosplays as a conservationist like she does. Some people even think she’s a scientist.
I really hate this trend of people only ever listening to the person they see as cooler or more attractive and mostly the person that just tells them what they wanna hear even if it's just straight up factually wrong over the person that is super knowledgeable/a qualified professional in said topic I only use Instagram anymore for a small handful of people I follow and can't read the comments under anything in my for you page cuz it's all gotten so toxic and brain dead anymore
100%. The only reason Ramsay has people defending her behaviour is because she is hot. If she looked like Barbara Streisand these simps wouldn't even know she existed.
It's actually really refreshing to see someone standing up for their own opinions without being disrespectful. I've loved this channel for a good while now, but my respect for you only grows. Thank you, Kris! As a scientist-to-be, it's great to see people in science communication creating educational content, while also being open to debates! I'm sure Ocean Ramsey really adores sharks and the kind of content she makes seems to attract people to these animals which, of course, can help raise awareness. However, I also believe that we should admire and protect sharks from a distance and that's where I personally feel uncomfortable with her content. I'd love to see the two of you debating, even if it's only to "agree to disagree", it would make such an interesting video! Though it's unlikely to happen, it's great to leave it open as an option. Thank you for being an inspiration!
When people have nothing to hide, they're open to debate. In a live debate, I doubt this Ramsey woman could really pretend that what she does is ANY GOOD for sharks at all. It is all for personal gain, period
She would just attack him rather than his points cause she can’t win anything scientific. She won’t change at all because she knows she’s wrong and doesn’t care. She likes her fame and money. And her fans would still support her cause they are completely clueless tik tok viewers who aren’t educated in real science and believe everything they hear on the internet from popular creators. Completely useless debate IMO
Agreed. My favourite Proverb says: "Do not answer the stupid one according to his [or her] foolishness, so that you do not put yourself on his level. Answer the stupid one according to his foolishness, so that he does not think he is wise." ... it's not a contradiction, but rather highlights, (among other things,) that there are times when an appropriate answer will highlight the foolishness of someone...(which Kris has already done 👍) and times when they will bring you down to their level of stupidity and beat you with their years of experience... at being a fool. And in this case, a foolish girl in a bikini is going to bring a lot of other fools to the fight with her.
She is another narcissist that is using conservation as a means to attract attention to herself. IG has amplified and exposed how narcissistic some people truely are
There's a quote (can't recall what it is). About you can do something and get away with it a hundred times but it only takes one time for it to go horribly wrong. Love this channel Kris keep up the awesome work.
My Brother is a commercial Diver, he is horrified by people like Ramsey taking away the inbuilt fear of humans that Sharks have by interacting and touching sharks, anything that changes their natural behaviour makes his job more dangerous..she is an absolute disgrace..
I love how you are just willing to talk out/debate your different views with various people. I agree we're all entitled to our own opinions and all have different views about things. But to me, common sense says if it's a wild animal, especially a large predatory animal, just respect it's space and don't try to cuddle it lol. I have immense respect for Anyone who helps wildlife, and I'm sure Ocean has done some good things... But I'm equally shocked at a lot of her "stunts & redirecting" and stopped watching her a long time ago. That her company doesn't really share data with the scientific community is absolutely nuts since I'd think they'd want to help however possible. But I'm not a professional and don't know anything about that company so really can't weight in. Just keep being you, i enjoy your videos and appreciate how you try to keep things unbiased unless specifically asked for your thoughts and opinions. ❤
I discovered Ocean Ramsey on tik tok before I had discovered your channel and I too had the same opinions. They aren’t cute cuddly animals that innocently swim around in their natural habitat. They are WILD animals. Unpredictable and certainly should not be trusted like she does. I love sharks. I see they are not our enemy, I grew up learning about them and that’s where I gained a healthy respect for these apex predators. But at the end of the day putting yourself in front of an inquisitive/stressed/scared shark is just no way to teach people the positives of having these apex predators not only survive but flourish. Imagine someone diving thinking that they too can do this!!! It only puts them and the shark in danger. By all means ocean Ramsey should teach her fan base about respecting sharks and the good they do in the food chain/ecology of the ocean. But she really should not be exploiting these animals for her gain. Especially in a way that could be dangerous for her the shark and her fans.
I was drawn to this also. After rigorous research I realized that marine biology was working for a big fishing corporation or stuck in a university lab - not Jacques Cousteau. Nonetheless, if this is your calling, we need you.
@@1492tomato As someone who's studying it right now, I can assure you there are more options than being stuck in a university lab (which, by the way, can be pretty great and interesting if you're doing cool research) or working in industry. There are still biologists out there on research vessels. There are biologists in museums and exhibitions working in science communication. There are still biologists who travel to the south pole to track penguins and collect data. And there are biologists working for NGOs, working towards environmental activism. I'm not saying it'll make you rich, but if you're down bad for science, there are jobs! There is research to be done! Academia struggles with funding and it's a competitive field, it's by no means fun and games, but you can make a difference and there's more to science than being stuck in a lab. (Besides, labs are cool.)
People shouldn’t be using sharks for clout. Yes, I get using it to highlight them and their plight in certain cases, but not free swimming and touching them and interfering and stuff. You just keep doing you mate, your stuff is considered, and science based… I’d back you all day everyday
Keep doing what you’re doing. Your content is amazing and among the top on the internet. You have a rare gift as to not only being an actual scientist, but an amazing communicator as well! That is extremely rare, and continue using your gift for the protection of our oceans and sharks and educating everyone how important it is to do so. I live in the United States and I’m terrified at the current anti science and anti education rhetoric along with the rampant, unchecked misinformation that is spreading like a plague. Thank you for sticking to science and facts! I would love to see you debate (a word that has lost its meaning as to respectfully defend your position) Ocean Ramsey with your candor and scientific knowledge and integrity. Love what you’re doing…keep it up! And yes, sharks are the coolest f’ing animals on the planet!!!
Two of my daughters are scuba divers on Maui. And my granddaughters have begun surfing with their mom & auntie. Ramsey is out of “the norm”. Promoting a familiarity that is NOT common with RECREATIONAL people. And NOT recommended for RECREATIONAL people. There are VERY wide differences from ANY shark…a reef shark vs adult tiger vs sub adult or adult great white! Let alone a bull shark (of any age). This girl is promoting a reckless familiarity with sharks…that shouldn’t be. To all the world. SHE knows what she is doing. But OTHERS don’t! AND she is CHANGING the behaviors of the shark. Repeatedly. Like bears, wolves, elephants, big cats, bison (etc)…sharks are healthier left ALONE. To be themselves. It’s just how I feel. As a native. I might be wrong.
I think it’s good that we don’t demonize sharks the way we did a generation ago. That said, this kind of behavior is reckless and it’s only a matter of time before a completely avoidable bad outcome happens again. There are already countless videos of people being unwise around apex predators and paying a steep price. Erich Ritter and Timothy Treadwell come to mind (and in Treadwell’s case the bear ended up being killed).
I’ll always support real scientists over influencers 💙 thank you for always being civil and respectful. Your videos are so educational and helpful with understanding shark science 💙🦈
Honestly at this point, it'd be a miracle for Ramsey to even reply to you. Even of she agreed to debate live, it's quite likely she'd chicken out or not be convincing in the debate.
@@moon-moth1Who’s WISHING anything on anyone? 😬 BE nuanced first if you plan to insert yourself into a joking back & forth with a mama-tone about nuance, please.
@Atreides42 "Who's WISHING anything on anyone?" OP's comment, "it will get messy 😂" No one laughing at a theoretical injury here. Actually, no, "it was just a joke! Joking gives you a free pass to say anything you want!"
I’m glad you made your videos on Ocean Ramsey. I’ve said for two years now that she is treating a wild animal like a domesticated pet. It’s bad for the sharks and dangerous for people who will try to mimic her behavior because they have been led to believe the sharks are benign.
Yeah, she is so toxic and such a bad influence. The only thing worse than the likelihood of her winding up in a tragic headline, is someone else ending up that way because they were influenced by her stupid, gimmicky behavior.
How is she 'toxic'. Shes getting on with her life, swimming with sharks. He's sat behind a desk in England, thousands of miles from any noteworthy shark populations bitching because she didn't reply to him before his first video :D
No live debate until (1) her and her company begin to share data with the greater scientific community and (2) she agrees to offer all streaming proceeds for first [week/month] go to an independent shark/oceanic conservation fund. Do NOT give more voice to anyone who have an agenda, unless that agenda is first and foremost for the benefit of these endangered animals.
My thoughts on swimming with sharks to prove they're friendly and harmless is that it would be just as absurd to pat & ride grizzly bears. I love sharks. I have loved them for 40+ years. But part of that love is respect for their immense power & their place as apex predators A Timothy Treadwell situation is inevitable, probably.
Personally I prefer the old school type nature documentaries instead of the more modern documentaries where presenters try to touch and interact with wild animals. For personal popularity I get why some people do what they do.
Other than limited scientific purpose like tagging and related tasks no one should be interacting with these animals. Sooner or later it goes badly and the animal is usually the one who ends up with the worst of the consequences.
I'm 100% on your side. Touching wildlife unnecessarily is bad, cruel and mean. I suppose the "sharkfluencers" know this but they need to get their clicks and unfortunately, this is how they get them. It would be sliiiightly more ok if they are at least honest and just straight out admit that this is how they make money and at least provide some valuable information about how they use that earned money to ACTUALLY help more sharks than they harass. I would be surprised if any sharkfluencer would actually agree to a discussion with you.
Kristian, leave social media influencers/narcissists like her to their delusions about how important & beautiful & fearless etc ... they are. It's a fake world through and through! I believe they talk to their bathroom mirror every day.:=) We prefer to listen to your thoughts on sharks in general, various true stories from the past, and interesting facts & new findings in the field of marine biology. Fake quasi-protectors of animals, who pursue self-promotion, just don't belong here. Keep up the good work!
My view is you shouldnt interfere with wild animals. Let them get on with their lifes. I am concerned at the baiting of sharks so they react and people watch from cages.
@@SHARKBYTES I would agree. I have read people saying that it doesnt affect their behaviour, they carry on with their lives. They operate near seal colonies because it is a food source, in South Africa it appears they moved away from certain areas because of Orca's.
@@SHARKBYTESyes please do. The positive of cage diving is the opportunity for scientists and non scientists to watch sharks behave in their natural world without having to touch them. There is so much we learned from sharks thanks to cage diving. I would also say that knowing how to redirect a shark if you encounter one to save your life, is a skill i would love to have. This also allows scientists to either remove fishing lines from them, or even watch them from a distance without being afraid. But to actually make it a tourist activity and intentionally attract them because you think it’s fun to redirect multiple sharks is a different story… if Ocean shared her “scientific data” with all scientists (including Kris) i’d also have a different POV towards her and her extreme shark diving sport..
Another awesome video Kris. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 It would be cool to see you and Ocean have a scientific shark debate. You do have some pretty good points. I find it a little suspicious how shady Ocean and everyone who worked for One Ocean Diving is. I can definitely say that you weren't trying to capitalize on someone else. Those accusations are complete crap. I can't believe TheMalibuArtist said that. What's a fabbot?
I would suggest you stop the video showing my comment and read it. At NO point do I call Kris out and its quite a benign comment at that. Ironically, it is quite narcissistic to think any comment is about someone without that person's name even being mentioned in the comment. In fact, I mention Good Morning America in the comment, not Kris. I've been pulled into these discussions for no other reason at all. Step back and ask yourself why? I'm a proponent of discussion, not debates. Do I agree with Ocean Ramsey's way of doing things? No. I don't. But I won't make it my business model to grow my fame by criticism of others. There's absolutely no reason to drag me into this video about her. But since it occurred, Kris knows he had several glaring holes in his "criticism" of the newborn white shark. I could have easily made a video pointing them out with actual heavy duty scientists behind me. But it is not the criticism I had an issue with. I welcome it. Just as long as it is informed criticism. You never heard Kris talk about the follow up study by University of Tokyo essentially stomping out any of his criticisms did you? But aside from that, most of my income is from licensing deals. My footage is contractually licensed and can't be used outside my channel and some media outlets without express written consent. Kris could have asked me for comment, or even footage, but he knows he wouldn't get my footage from me because I've explained to him my licensing agreements. So instead, he ripped it from BBC as a go around and made a video that left out major elements of the study. He never reached out to me to discuss these "criticisms" and so whatever he said on screen, is what his audience thinks is true. That just isn't a professional way of doing things. The paper itself has me and my co-author's contact information in it. Ironically, Mermaid Kaleigh, whom he mentioned above wanted to post a TikTok video using said footage. Even though I don't agree fully with how she does things around sharks, she demonstrated she is a professional by asking for comment and having a discussion first. She was truly interested in what I had to say about the newborn shark and not trying to score views. Kris instead, went his own route. If you think simply stating the facts is calling him out, then so be it.

In a professional capacity, it isn't cool to have folks bringing up your name without first talking to you. Aside from that, just look at all the comments. It's seeding negativity. Something I have no time for. I recently had a major TV show personality bring me up on his podcast and wrongfully accuse me of something that I had nothing to do with. Instead of perpetuating it, once he realized the mistake, he openly apologized and owned up to it. I talk to him often now, because we are both professionals. I admire the true shark scientist such as yourself ,Ocean made meringue for the sharks and also former non-stop need to harass them, she calls them cutie names which creates an atmosphere that the shark is indeed a playful cheery creature ,its not ,its a vital contributor to our lives ecology system that demands we are cautious in how we approach our need to discover more about them .We can do this without making them out to be circus show stoppers for click bait .Thankyou for your ongoing commitment to our ocean life and sharks .
I've always thought she was more exploiting ocean life by obviously going for sex appeal, NOT conservation or even animal behavior. She dresses for it and has herself filmed for it. No, I'm not 'jealous', which is what I get when I show her for what she is, as well. Does she ever use natural sound? I see her with music slapped on the clips....yeah, big preserver of ocean life there, Ramsey. She acts like they will not harm her, and that is devastating suggestions to give her 'fans'. She touches every chance she gets and that is a huge no no for influencers ...which is all she is.
I hate it when people pull out the "you are just jealous" card. It's a very common ad hominem fallacy, where instead of addressing the argument or point at hand, they're attacking your character or emotions. It's a way to deflect and shut down the conversation without engaging in a meaningful discussion.
So actually I do have an opinion, Ocean Ramsay shouldn’t be riding sharks and so what if people think your first video was used to get views - even though I know there’s no substance to that comment. Your subscribers know just how hard you work on your channel just to make a meager living, so good for you. I for one love your content no matter whether it’s controversial, factual or merely entertaining. 100k subscribers here we come. Yours sincerely mama shark bytes.
I'd never heard of her until you did that video expressing your concerns, which I think are very valid. Her ignoring and avoiding direct discussion is also rather telling. I've no time for her, and wouldn't even be that interested in watching her try to debate.
Love the channel. I agree with you for many reasons. As a recreational scuba diver who has been fortunate to have sharks turn up. The guidelines are leave them alone. Look don't touch. Take only photos and leave only bubbles. Keep up the good work!
Sadly her being so handsy with sharks will likely lead to herself getting attacked or even worse someone who follows her and just thinks it's ok to try with no experience. Would love to see a debate between the two of you but doubt it would ever happen due to how she acts and not actually sharing any info she claims to have.
Keep up the good work, mate. You're on the right path. I agree with most of your content, and it always comes across as polite, based on fact and genuine.
Enjoyed the video once again. And yes I hope there is an exchange of ideas or a discussion between yourself and Ocean Ramsey. I'm glad you pointed out and highlighted the stress reactions that affect animals and sharks due to unnecessary interaction. Thank you
I truly appreciate this video-thank you so much! I hate it when egos take precedence over animals. Wildlife deserves to be respected and left untouched.
Wow! Haters always have to post comments, don’t they? I just want to throw in my opinion and tell you that your channel, information and expertise (which you EARNED with all of those years you spent getting your degrees and working) are all excellent - love your channel❤
this is actually rather simple: shark influencers exploit sharks for their own financial benefit. to do this properly though they need to create an image around themselves that doesn´t revolve around the actual exploitative nature of their business but rather makes them look like people with a scientific purpose behind their actions. therefore they come up with all this redirecting nonsense that not one person that watches their content will ever actually do, yet they act is if they are teaching people something purposeful. behind it though lies the motivation of getting as much attention possible by swimming so closely with sharks which again brings in financial gain. instead of reflecting on the intrinsically hypocritical nature of their business they instead adjust their "ideology" to the nature of their business. in psychology this is called a cognitive dissonance.
I always thought she was sketchy. I think in one short clip she gave the sharks names so they seemed to be always around a particular location. Another clip showed her about to get in the water when a tiger showed up, mouth agape. She has to be baiting these animals to keep them around which is not a normal behavior. I think she has done a lot to make sharks associate people with food and I fear it won't end well.
The reason Kayleigh didn't want to do the debate is because she knew that she would lose. She likely realized debating an actual shark scientist as a shark influencer was a bit like taking a spork to a shark fight
Hah - both of them swimming into their corners of the under water ring. Ocean riding on a GW, which will, after being fed up with being ridden, will fatality both.
Grab the popcorn! Another fantastic video from Shark Bytes. It's baffling how some influencers try to challenge established science, often from the safety of their comments or videos. Kristian's response was not only insightful (take notes, Ramsey) but also demonstrated his openness to genuine debate-likely because he truly knows his stuff. I'd love to see a live debate between the two. It could really open some eyes to the harm Ramsey is causing to sharks. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely since she tends to hide behind her online persona.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about shark influencers because when I triggered the shark algorithm and started getting Ocean Ramsey and Mermaid Kayleigh's videos, I originally thought they were videos of off-chance interactions ...until I checked their pages out and realozed that was their whole schtick, and it was pre-meditated/set up. I'd argue against giving them a platform in the first place, but the nature of YT and other social media algorithms changes how engagement (and debunking) has to work. That, and I doubt any of them wi take you up on the offer anyway.
My uncle Glenn saw Ocean Ramsey at a tesco express in Basingstoke. Apparently she doesn't look like pictures as she's got ginger hair and is in her late 50s..... TBH I don't think it was Ocean Ramsey, poor Uncle Glenn he's not been well for some time 😢
I know he doesn't do shark-related content (yet), but what is your opinion on UA-camrs like FishingGarrat and his whole "yoink" community? I feel like a lot of what you explained here about Ocean Ramsey could similarly be applied to him just randomly stressing out reptiles in tropical rainforests. I'd be interested to see your take on UA-camrs like this.
I actually really liked Ocean until I started watching his videos. I thought she was a legit Marine Biologist. She does that shit on purpose. I don't watch her videos anymore because of that
So, I'm a big ol' raaaaaaging feminist and you.are.not.a.misogynist. That is absurd. Not touching wildlife is a REALLY reasonable take. Anyone who has worked in welfare knows this. I mean, my experience is with feral horses(wild horses don't really exist except maaaybe the Przewalski horse, it's dubious), but they are also a potentially dangerous animal that people try to interact with. It makes people think that if they act a certain way or know enough that they could interact w/wild animals and maybe get famous doing it too. People overinflate their knowledge all the time and get into super dangerous situations. She doesn't want to talk to a shark scientist because when it comes down to it, she's gaining too much personally, and facing what she's doing is wrong will ruin that for her. She's gained fame and money from this. I'm just glad the equine community would lose their shit if there was a horse influencer going out and interacting w/feral horse herds that are minding their own business. In most places you can be fined for petting the pretty ponies and I love that. Please give us interviews with ex-employees.
She is no different that Treadwell or that guy who lost his pants on a horn when yeeted by a bison at Yellowstone. If she keeps to her pattern of behavior (baiting so they associate her with food, no protection (seriously girly pop, wear a steel mesh suit it might save your life! Who cares if it isn't aesthetic?!), and physical contact; she is sadly putting herself on borrowed time. Every interaction she is stacking the deck in favor of tragedy either for her or one of her crew (or heaven forbid someone influenced by watching her to think they can do what she does). And the sharks will be the ones blamed. She and her spotters are good at redirecting the ones they see, but when it comes to 18ft long apex ambush predators with instinct older than the rings of Saturn, their entire hunting strategy comes down to not being seen. Or at least, not being seen until it's too late to do anything but put fresh skidmarks your wetsuit. Humans are lucky they don't think of us as a food source... except for her redefining herself as a source of food. The literal best case scenario is that she misses the snout redirecting a tiger shark one day and cuts herself on a few teeth. Timothy Treadwell thought he had a special connection with the bears right up until the day 141 ended his life.
She reminds me of Timothy Treadwell. He, too, treated wild animals like pets. He got killed and eaten.
Ocean Ramsey still lives!
When you have any job with any animal (even domestic pets) it's only a matter of time before one hurts you even accidentally
Keep in mind most shark "attacks" are just exploratory bites, so if a great white or tiger shark giving a curious little nibble is bad imagine what they'd do if you actually piss them off
@@ghostshirt1984 Treadwell lived for quite a few years too. Homey made it 13 years before becoming bear poop.
The SHARK BYTES video exposing Ocean Ramsey's wildlife exploitation, not education was spot on. Thank you.
Riiight, simple, rustic, ya? Wake up! Jesus! Fuck me. You're not a fucking chef! Hoi, right, good, ya. Make a nice, simple, beef Wellington.
No one should be touching wildlife. They have enough problems without stupid humans trying to manhandle them. That video of her jumping on the shark and riding it is horrifying.
Yeah we alright cause them enough problems don’t need us touching them up too

people seriously think ocean Ramsey is a better scientist than the actual shark scientist. in studying biography a pretty important rule is to not interfere with the subjects. that's literally ocean Ramsey's entire gig. I wouldn't even just walk up to a dog and start petting it but that's exactly what ocean Ramsey does. unacceptable practices.
so true, perfect analysis
Yep. The point you make pretty much follows the trend we're seeing across the board. Which is; if you hear science & facts go on the attack.
That is true. The point of study is observation, not interference.
💯👆
It's not that people today can't handle criticism. People in general can't handle it and also couldn't in the past. In my opinion, it's likely a matter of socialization; we don't get taught things like "how to handle criticism" or "how to communicate and enforce your personal boundaries" growing up, even though those things and so many more would be super helpful. There's always hope for the future generations.
@@louibeans I wouldn’t have hope.
It’s a participation ribbon world 😏
@@psychokinrazalon I need hope. Hope is what makes thinking about the future not entirely miserable :)
They're not apex predators. The orca is the apex predator of the ocean
@@kylemendoza8860 And yet I'd rather be in the water near an Orca than a Great White,...
Hello fellow vet through my degree in vet bioscience leans heavily into research Vs clinical work like vet med
You are *not* a sexist pig, you are a wise and honest man who cares about the safety of others.

it is animal abuse. full stop. And it needs to stop.
I don't think the shark minds too much.... Calling that abuse is tantamount to calling Kris sexist for disagreeing with a woman.

No point in debating her kind, they just have a hissy fit and refuse to listen to anyone who disagrees with them. They’re too thick to get through to.
She would just attack him rather than his points cause she can’t win anything scientific. She won’t change at all because she knows she’s wrong and doesn’t care. She likes her fame and money.

Perhaps Miss Ramsey would like to speak with some of the survivors from the Battle off Samar and their encounters with sharks in the water.

There are still biologists who travel to the south pole to track penguins and collect data. And there are biologists working for NGOs, working towards environmental activism.
@@SHARKBYTES do you ever work "on a field' and dive with sharks sometimes?
Thanks!
@@cats1900 thanks so much!!
She has to be very lucky every time she gets in the water, the shark only needs to be lucky once. Can't wait for the final episode!
Another awesome video Kris. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
It would be cool to see you and Ocean have a scientific shark debate.
I was wondering that too LOL
The Malibu Artist called Kristian out? WTF?!?
@@TheMalibuArtistCarlos, when you start flying out with words like narcissist, you’re not really setting this up for a good-hearted conversation. If you want to actually have a chat about this, my email inbox is always open.
@@SHARKBYTES Now you want to take things private? After you publicly accuse me of something ?? Needless to say, you can't bring up someone's name publicly when it suits you but then only want to have a response in private. YOU brought me into this. Why not talk to me prior? In a professional capacity, it isn't cool to have folks bringing up your name without first talking to you. Aside from that, just look at all the comments. It's seeding negativity. Something I have no time for. I recently had a major TV show personality bring me up on his podcast and wrongfully accuse me of something that I had nothing to do with. Instead of perpetuating it, once he realized the mistake, he openly apologized and owned up to it. I talk to him often now, because we are both professionals. I understand you are likely young and still learning, as we all are, but with time you will see that courtesy and professionalism and baiting people isn't the most effective means of creating alliances or working relationships. All the best to you Kris.
Imagine people saying you’re using other people’s names for clout but they’re out there using sharks as clout 💀
I’m Team Kris the Shark Scientist, always 😂❤
I think a debate would be super helpful. I would personally like to hear both viewpoints at the same time. If she’s up for it.
There isn't a valuable viewpoint where Ocean is concerned. She is risking shark lives.
@@thedarknessunderneathpodca6366 I think differing opinions deserve to be heard. Especially when trying to shed light on a subject that's important to a great number of people. Value is determined by the person listening, its not for us to determine value for others. I don't agree with her approach, but I do think it's important to not be determinedly close-minded. Let her speak, if she wants to defend her position. Let him speak for the same reason. I think it would be an interesting debate. That's all I'm saying.
She touches every chance she gets and that is a huge no no for influencers ...which is all she is.
you think she likes the validation from men?
I hate it when people pull out the "you are just jealous" card. It's a very common ad hominem fallacy, where instead of addressing the argument or point at hand, they're attacking your character or emotions. It's a way to deflect and shut down the conversation without engaging in a meaningful discussion.
@@skycloud4802 Indeed! Call it gaslighting...because it IS.
Ocean is slime, and so are the people calling you sexist to dismiss the potential risk to sharks.
All humans are equal to sharks....well, in the sense that we all taste terrible, anyway.
Thank you for a great podcast. I love your level head and truth telling! Good on you.
Yeah, you tell them mama shark bytes
I'd never heard of her until you did that video expressing your concerns, which I think are very valid. Her ignoring and avoiding direct discussion is also rather telling. I've no time for her, and wouldn't even be that interested in watching her try to debate.
Really disappointed to hear that Malibu artist had a negative reaction to your video. He seemed to always be interested in science and learning.
I've heard that the sharks are very well fed and sometimes sedated prior to her interactions. I noticed a tranquilizer dart sticking out of one tiger.
That was probably a radio tag
@@bill2908 They don't tag them on the lower side.
i felt like i was the only one who saw her for what she was. thank u, Kristian.
She is arrogant and wants validation by men. And while I don't care about her, I don't want her getting a shark killed.
I think she's a Burke, so I'm with you on this one.
Shark influencer tea is my favorite type of tea online, so I am seated for this!
Keep up the good work, mate. You're on the right path. I agree with most of your content, and it always comes across as polite, based on fact and genuine.
I REALLY hate when egos get in the way of science.
Very well explained 🫶🦈Thank you for speaking out for wildlife 💚
Enjoyed the video once again. And yes I hope there is an exchange of ideas or a discussion between yourself and Ocean Ramsey.
I'm glad you pointed out and highlighted the stress reactions that affect animals and sharks due to unnecessary interaction.
Thank you
I truly appreciate this video-thank you so much! I hate it when egos take precedence over animals. Wildlife deserves to be respected and left untouched.
Team shark bytes! 💯💯🦈🦈🦈
Please reach back out to the former employee.
I'd LOVE to see that debate. Good input, sir!
Ten bucks says she won't debate someone who knows more about sharks than she does.
Good work son. Keep at it.
I think she has done a lot to make sharks associate people with food and I fear it won't end well.
the video with her about to enter the water when the tiger shows up has always scared me !
The reason Kayleigh didn't want to do the debate is because she knew that she would lose. She likely realized debating an actual shark scientist as a shark influencer was a bit like taking a spork to a shark fight
I'd love to see a "Celebritiy Death Match" style animation of you going against Ocean - just for the banter xD
Hah - both of them swimming into their corners of the under water ring. Ocean riding on a GW, which will, after being fed up with being ridden, will fatality both.
@@maskharat That's exactly what I had in mind. xD
Love your videos. Never heard of Ocean Ramsey before your first video. Still haven't seen any of her videos. But I would watch this debate.
I’m sure she’ll pop up on your timeline eventually!!

She’s encouraging sharks to make contact with humans! I think Steve has seen her escalating interactions and now agrees with you.
I'm on your side, sharkbytes! Support shark science, don't touch sharks!
My uncle Glenn saw Ocean Ramsey at a tesco express in Basingstoke. Apparently she doesn't look like pictures as she's got ginger hair and is in her late 50s..... TBH I don't think it was Ocean Ramsey, poor Uncle Glenn he's not been well for some time 😢
Some time later she was reportedly seen at a nearby chippy, redirecting a battered cod from the counter
Those posy women need to ditch their egos and leave wildlife alone. Thanks for the real talk, your not a misogynist your a realist
“Instinct older than the rings of Saturn” is probably one of the top 10 most badass things ever written
