    "This isn't a palms up Military run Mal, no reports broadwaved, no warrants. As much as they want her they want her hid, which means an Operative, which is trouble you've not known." -Shepherd Book

    Wash and Book died for off-screen reasons - the actors couldn't commit to a possible three film deal, so this was the easiest way of explaining why they weren't there in any sequels - but their deaths also served to remove the plot armour from the other characters; it's entirely possible that they're all going to die.
    The fight scenes were all Summer; they're an example of what happens when a trained dancer spends a few months working with stunt fight coordinators. Apparently they kept discovering new things Summer could do and working them into the fight; "Did you know Summer can kick someone standing behind her in the head?"

    • @OldLadyReacts
      @OldLadyReacts  8 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, I legit thought that they could seriously all be killed off by the end of the movie. Or there would be only one or two left and be riddled with survivors guilt or something.
      Yeah, Summer did great. Those fight scenes were awesome.

    • @tvdroid22
      @tvdroid22 8 місяців тому +1

      The biggest jump in the fight scene WAS NOT Summer. Given more training, I don't doubt she could've mastered it. She proved that, but time was an issue and they couldn't risk her safety.

    For almost 20 years, I didn’t get the significance of the dialog:
    ‘There are a lot of innocent people dying in the air right now.’
    Mal: ‘You don’t know how true that is.’
    Feel partially dumb that I didn’t get it, and partially in awe that there are subtleties still to be found.

      So true. The series too. First time I watched with subtitles I realized I had missed some nuances.

      Yep. Didn’t see the show until later, which confused me as to why River wasn’t as capable yet, but I loved the movie, and I really love the show now.

    10:45 I think 'He didn't lie down. They never lie down.' is alluding to the way people were found on Miranda. The people who just lied down just died, but the ones who didn't lie down became reavers. Nice foreshadowing!

    In case you haven't heard the joke yet: How do reavers clean their spears? They run them through the Wash.

  • @boqndimitrov8693
    @boqndimitrov8693 8 місяців тому +1

    I think the Alliance will always continue to pursue River because of her superhuman abilities. They were important to her "mentors" in the secret academy before the dangerous secret about Miranda got into her head.

    I would love to see another movie. I would be ecstatic if Christina Hendricks came back for it.
    As far as losing Wash and Book, Joss's writing style reminds me of a Dungeon Master I had in college. He would roll dice at the beginning of a campaign to determine how many of our characters would die in the dungeon. Then slowly take them out before we got to the end.

    • @OldLadyReacts
      @OldLadyReacts  8 місяців тому +1

      But I am glad that we did lose some of the characters (even if the reason was off-screen), because it ups the stakes significantly.

  • @SoonLeeNZ

    The big budget was sort of necessary to translate it to the big screen. One of the things they had to do was to recreate the Firefly set as it had been destroyed after the cancellation of the TV series. I think they did a decent job of making it understandable to a new viewer while making it good for Firefly fans. There were some outstanding moments. River stepping up to save everyone.
    Also:
    "I am a leaf on the wind..."

    • @OldLadyReacts
      @OldLadyReacts  8 місяців тому +2

      I'm just glad the studio gave them enough of a budget to do it right!

    • @ThePharaz
      @ThePharaz 8 місяців тому +1

      @@OldLadyReacts The studio didn't give them a budget nor did FOX allow them to use the name Firefly for the movie. It was the first or one of the first fan supported movies financially. Fans raise around 30 million for the movie. Universal and not FOX promoted and distributed the movie. Unfortunately Universal dropped the ball and the movie was not a financial success as they had hoped so it might be a movie franchise. The reason for Wash and Book's death was not arbitrary but because neither could commit to future movies.

    "Serenity The Movie": We get a way-too-close look at Reavers and their origin story. The Operative makes "Jubal Early" look like a choirboy by comparison. What movie should you watch next? How about an "I am not a Robot" movie? If you don't mind subtitles, "Train to Busan" (2016) is a fresh take on a Horror movie trope and reduces strong men and women to tears by the last quarter of the movie. If that sounds too intense, "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) is top quality non-Horror Stephen King. Here are two standout Animated features: "Up" (2009) and "The Iron Giant" (1999). Both make today's "made for modern audiences" movies look like grade school productions, if plot, character development and story are important to you. Seasonal note: Every time a UA-cam viewer falls in love with "Firefly," a Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.;) Please stand for the complete Browncoat anthem: ua-cam.com/video/gUn-eN8mkDw/v-deo.html

    The move River makes with the gun pointing at the Captain while her attention is elsewhere reminds me of Jubal Early doing the same to I believe Simon. Makes me think Jubal was like River but maybe a failed version.
    The series was actually sabotaged from before it was aired because the one that green-lighted it was promoted. The replacement wanted it gone so they aired misleading promos, had them at the last minute replace the 2-hour pilot, aired many of the episodes out of order, and changed air time/days without notice to the viewers. Canceled the series halfway through the season. Aired the original pilot after canceling the series. 3 episodes were actually aired over the summer without being promoted.
    The series was planned to have a 22-episode per season format for 5 to 7 seasons.

      Oh. Please watch the series of 14 episodes that is Firefly. It’s not much of a time investment and is so worth it. You will understand Serenity’s crew so much more and understand why fans who saw the series first think it’s still too soon to talk about character deaths. 🥹 The series has a lot more humor in it too. Many lines are delightfully quotable. I rewatch it every year. The movie-not so much.

    Firefly has a great cast of characters and a great premise for an "evil empire" ... but sadly - as ALWAYS - Joss Whedon doesnt care about the laws of physics, which should be the same as in our world, because it is "refugees from Earth". Sticking to actual physics would have added loads of interesting ways to create threats.
    - Changing River from a "really talented girl" to a "psychic" is annoying too
    - sadly it is also part of the "girl that is the key to everything" TROPE of modern feminist entertainment
