250 xc-w i , I really don't see a need for a 300. I'm on a yz250 2018 and I love it. I think I love the snappy mx motor because that's all I know. 40 years on dirtbikes. Most of them years been on 250 yz or kx250 2 strokes.
I just got a 300 xcw 2021 and I love the 250s but man that 300 power is like cheating its the lazy way to ride fits me perfectly. The 250 zip is way fun tho
Both the 250 and 300 are great. Where I find it matters is in the steeps and technical terrain. A lot more precision clutch work is required with the 250. The 300 just won’t die: you can lug it to the absolute bottom and it just keeps on chugging. This helps when traction is at a premium. Yes, it is “ lazier”, but this saves energy over the course of a long hard ride. On flatter, easier terrain, the 250 makes quicker transitions and feels peppier, but it requires more rider involvement to do so. For me, I can ride the 300 all day long in tough terrain expending less energy than if I was on the 250. For big hillclimbs, the 300 rules.
It's been hard with the move and remodel, riding/fixing bikes and making trailbound goods! I've got tons of video filmed but need to a video editor to help me get it up haha
I originally bought a 19' 250 XC and about 4 months ago put the 300 kit on it. Best decision ever! It's so much more fun to ride now and there is very noticeably more power there when you need it with a lot less clutching and it's still just as snappy.
I think it's the tpi that doesn't make the 300 feel snappy. My Beta 300 is pretty snappy with the carb. It'll pull a wheelie in 2nd or 3rd gear from a relatively slow speed. I suspect that the power valve on the tpi just needs to be turned up a bit too.
If You're looking for more "Snap" with the 300, just adjust the power valve out to flush then back it in 2 full turns. It'll rip you're arms out the sockets. Not sure why Nobody's mentioned that with all the "it's not snappy" commentary.
Glad to see your making videos again. I too have a 2017 KTM 250 XC and just recently rode my buddies 2020 KTM 300 XC TPI and thought the 300 had a bunch more grunt and much easier in the slow stuff and gnarly hills. Where my 250 shined was in the faster single track where you can just ride it on the pipe and let it rip. Maybe you should put a 300 kit on your 250 and see if you like it? I plan on putting on a 300 kit at the end of this year when I have to do a top end, just to see the difference. Did you like the Xplor front forks more than the AER fork?
yeah I think I might try the 300 kit but really I need to get rid of this old lectron because I'm pretty sure thats whats making my bike feel dead. I love the xplor forks on the front of my 250xc but you have to run them low with soft rear so ends up lowering you bike a bit. fine for me as I'm 140lb and 5'9"
Dammit, Chris! Now you have me leaning towards looking for a 2019 250xc instead of a 21. I've been a little concerned about the smoothness of the tpi not feeling lively enough for me. I suppose I could always mod the tpi to make it more snappy but how much more should one spend on a new $10,000 bike? Thanks for the video! It's been a while.
Rizzo44 Rizzo to be fair I didn’t have a 250xc tpi to test. I’m assuming that would be more snappy than the 300xcw and 250xcw? There are a lot of engine mod related stuff people are doing to the tpi tho but I’m with you that’s a lot of extra money for a “race ready” bike
My 250XC TPI is very snappy and the power is very linear. I had a high compression head on my 18 250XC and that was a handful but he power on my 2020 250XC is smoother from bottom, mid, and top end. I have been very happy with the power delivery. However, my 2020 wont idle down low which is really annoying. If the throttle is open the TPI bike will stay running more than my 18 carb bike did. Man now I say all of this you will like either bike hahah
So the main difference (complaint) I got from that was that the TPI bikes weren't as snappy or responsive with the throttle for things like double-blips. Kind of sounds like the difference between old carb cars and cars with FBW - yes they both still have a pedal and a throttle butterfly, but the FBW motor doesn't always do what you're asking of it. Hopefully something that can be improved on in the future.
Muppets Inc. in terms of a ride test and feeling yeah I would say that’s accurate. I guess the other plus sides of carb not to be shown in a ride comparison is is you can work on it a carb easier, has a kick start, assuming more reliable with less electronic stuff?
I have a 2018 xcw 250 and a 2021 xcw 300, it took me about 4 hours to get use to the 300 power, the first couple of rides my arms where dead just holdind on to the bars, but once i got familiar with the power it was eazeer to get over certain obstacles and way less clucth fethering in manny situation. I still love the 2018 250 carb bike and its going to be a great spair, but these 300 tpi bikes are awsome😎 and in 2021 they have a preload ajustment on the forks wich make a huge difference in the front end handling👌
hah yeah those things were definitely making my arms feel more tired than the 250 but could see how you would need way less clutching riding them probably less shifting too. felt like you could be a lot more lazy riding the 300 and just lug it
Ride Arm Enduro, I’ve got a 21 300 XC-W as well and pretty much lug it in a gear or 2 higher and it feels pretty tame but fun. As far as the fork preload adjustment I haven’t touched those at all. How do those affect things and what situations would you change the preload?
@@rickspartan I am kind of an agressive rider so I like to run a stiffer front end especially when there's alot of downhills, it tends to keep the front end a little higher and not feel like you are going to nose dive. While trail riding I have the fork preload on +3 with compression and rebound 11 clicks out, rear shock compression and low speed rebound 13 clicks out and the high speed 1 1/2 turns out, this seems to be a good overall setting for a intermediate agressive rider. If I am in lots of sand I turn 2 clicks in on the compression and rebound on the forks. Don't be afraid to play with your fork clickers and settings they can make a huge difference in the bikes handling, eventually you will get familiar and comfortable with adjusting your suspension for different conditions 👌
Ride Arm Enduro, nice man. I appreciate the wealth of information. Riding higher in the stroke should help a bit. I am noticing a nose dive when braking. I’ll definitely have to play around with the settings more
The carb bikes do feel a little more playful where the tpi's are more linier. I do find the tpi bikes seem to put the power to the ground more efficiently, I'm amazed at how I can lug up steep hills and not get any wheelspin with my 250xc tpi. As far as your question on which one I'd choose, I'll go 300 next time just for a change but I believe there is nothing a 300 can do that the 250 can't. Unless your Jarvis maybe.
PNW Enduro I’m in the same boat probably go 300 just because I’ve had 4 250xc in a row. I think a 250 can make you lsss tired than a 300 + it gives a different feeling.
@@SA-uz8kz oh man, hard to say. I kind of want to do a 300xc-w next but I'm still not a fan of the wide ratio transmission. Honestly if I was buying today I might go with a Sherco 300SE.
@@PNWEnduro If you did do the 300xcw then it would only be for the suspension by the sounds of it then? I watched your video on the 2020 xc vs xcw and you sounded like the xplor and pds surprised you how good it was. I'm really torn between a new 300 xc and the 300xcw. On paper the xcw looks like it "should" be more my style and suit my trails (trails similar to your video) but the XC seems to have the better transmission and maybe a better do everything bike.
Im on a 21" 250XC TPI and am really happy. Def more nimble and feels appreciably lighter at the motor than the 300 XC-W. But the 300 lugs like crazy. Id like to spend more time on a 300xc-w or try a 300xc. The 300xc may be the sweet spot for me. PDS feels a little too soft for my taste.
I have a 2019 xcw250 tpi and wish I had the 300. With that being said I'm still super happy with the bike overall. I just struggle on hill climbs that the 300 would most likely make. If I can find a 300 kit I'll go that route for sure.
