I removed the guards for the wire wheel but kept the guard on for the stone for safer operation. I don’t think a wire wheel needs the guard and with it off it makes it much easier to use all of the wire brush.....especially on larger projects. Great tip on the two nuts! After struggling to tighten up my wheels it did the trick. Funny how such an easy solution can be missed.
Since posting this comment, I’ve also learned that you shouldn’t over tighten the nuts as you risk cracking the stone. Firming the nuts up is better and the rotation of the wheel will keep them tight. I guess that’s why many grinders don’t have an arbor lock .....prevents users from cranking those nuts down too tight.
Just saved me a lot of time and cursing - greatly appreciated.
Sir you just saved my sanity, me being as daft as a box of frogs I forgot about the two nut trick. Many thanks
Nicely done, sir. The wire wheel is a real bonus to any shop work.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video, very helpful!
I resolved brush noise and better uses with going from 6” wire wheel, to 5” wire wheel.
No noise, doesn’t touch guard, or work rest. Also spins faster.
I use coarse grind stone, and fine wire wheel.
Perfect for my needs.
Good luck to all.
Yeah that’s in the manual 6” inch stone and 5” wire wheel.
I used the excess plastic washers in the pack to take up excess space next to the casing ! Works a treat .
Hi there can dose be used without the side covers ? Thanks
Very clearly explained. Thanks
hi m8 just got an ozito mini bench grinder from a garage sale & cant work out how 2 remove the wheels they just keep spinning.
Why don't the manufactures put a button on the grinder to hold the shaft for tightening the bolt?
cause they love to know that we gonna curse and get mad
That would be too easy for us 😅
Just found your channel and Subscribed. Very nice work.
Merry Christmas
airmoji, that’s the issue I was having with my Ryobi 6” grinder. I wanted to install a wire wheel, but whenever I tried tightening the nut that holds it, the opposite one would come lose. I’d think the shaft had a notch to place a wrench and hold the shaft from moving but it doesn’t.. Do you knows what torque to give to the nuts holding the wheels?
Edit:
Ok so I was able to tighten both nuts..
On the right side between the motor & the wire wheel, there is space enough to squeeze in some tongue and groove pliers or even some locking pliers to hold and keep the shaft from moving..I covered the pliers teeth with blue tape to avoid scratching the shaft. It worked perfect, I was able to tighten both the right & left retaining nuts!
I found my manual for my Delta 6" bench grinder... it states "When changing wheels, simply remove the side screw covers to the grinder and remove the side cover. To prevent the shaft from rotation, place a wedge between the grinding wheel and the wheel guard...".
A rubber door stop wedge might be ideal for this... gonna give it a try, although I already managed to get the one stone off, after removing the guard for the other side and holding a wrench in place on that nut.
That's what I do (jam the wheel)
Hello Sharpey, did you make the video of you reconditioning those old rusty tools as I can't see it, would be interesting to see.
Hi buddy there is a video on me doing some rusty chisels but I've got one going on tonight at 5 o'clock gmt restoring a old screwdriver cheers buddy
Thank you Sir 🎉
Can i use buffing wheels on a bench grinder ?
Thank you for sharing
I was always told that the dished washers are fitted with the "dishing" outward from the wheel/stone because the drive is transmitted through the flat faces of the washer (greater contact area so better friction) and if fitted with the dishing inward it's actually dangerous because the "spreading" loading of the tapered faces combined with the centrifugal/petal forces when the machines running can cause the wheel or stone to fly apart ------- the little plastic washers are only to centre the wheel on the shaft (the centring bushing kit allows the wheel to fit a greater number of machines) playing no part in the running of the machine except location.
Bought a brand new bench grinder today. It made absolutely no dense to me that they all come with two grinding wheels that are exactly the same. I mean, what am I going to do...grind a second piece with my feet?
Grinder arrived today. Wire wheel for the left side arrived yesterday, and sat n the bench waiting for the tool.
I removed the guards on mine because of the stray wires. Within seconds the whiskers had begin to chew up my guards and sounded awful as well. You do lose your tool holder but that's not really critical with a wire wheel.
Great job interesting video
Hi thanks Sharpie I enjoyed your video. Just a question, why are there no eye guard shields fitted on the bench grinder?
Hi Sean a lot of my tools are second hand and unfortunately it didn't come with any problems of working on a tight budget I am afraid
Shouldn't have to piss about making up spacers and the like, the fittings on grinders and wheels should be universal, one off, one on.
Hi Paul, this looks scary, safety goggles a must. Can hear the stray wires scraping on the guard? Wonder if you can run the wire wheel without the guard? I saw a few videos that suggest soaking rusty tools in vinegar? Interested to see the results. I have a couple of old vices I want to refurbish. Record imp and big old bench vice. Enjoy your videos buddy. 👍🏼
+Greg Virgoe hi Greg yes it is a bit scary it sounds worse on camera though and goggles are a must on this one it does a cracking job I've just cleaned a chisel of camera looks great
Greg - soaking in vinegar works well. I've tried in on a few old tools that were quite bad. It leaves a blackish patina but fine details remain. For chunky bits of metal, I think this is a good way to go though - probably a better finish if you want to paint
Hi sharpy ,why did you put black tape over 'clarke' ?
Just done this tonight on my 6" Clark grinder. I too faced same problems, opposite thread. I used 2 of the spare plastic spacers to pack out to correct width. Seems to work. I'm thinking of removing the tool rest , what do you think?
Hi Brendan I am working on covering all name brands I own I don't think it's fair to give them free advertising lol as for the tool rest I would leave it on but one or two people have said remove the guard but the tool rest is really handy I've found but I always wear safety goggles it is a must with the wire wheel a peice of wire hit me the other day and fetched blood on my arm good luck buddy and stay safe
Covering the brand name lowers the value of your videos, people like to see what tools you have, dumb idea
What model grinder is this please?
In manual on my new Delta Grinder it states to use the same wheel on both sides otherwise premature bearing can occur. Been using this setup on my blue point for decades
all the best from Doncaster but one thing you got wrong, left wheel is left thread (not right as you stated) and right is right thread (left as you stated), easy mistake while doing a voice over.
Hi Sharpey, What is the wattage/ power of your bench grinder. I was looking at buying a 150w bench grinder to use with a wire wheel. Dont know if it would be under-powered for a wire wheel.
Hi buddy it's is 150 watt and to be honest it is a little underpowered but it gets me away cheers
@@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP Thanks for the reply Sharpey. Is 150w ok to grinder HSS lathe tools?
Just use the the wheel on the other end, either hold/turn it with your hand while having a wrench on the bolt to loosen or tighten it.
Don't use the guards with the wire wheel, it's dangerous, parts can get pulled in over the workrest, hopefully your fingers aren't in there when it does.
Hi Paul, I tried this with my altocraft bench grinder, but after I changed to the wire wheel, it wouldn't spin, I changed back to the grinding wheel and then it works, any ideas on why itty would not spin when I changed from grinding wheel to wire brush wheel? Thanks in advance! - Robert
Hi Robert it sounds like the wheel fouling on something try leaving the guard off buddy
SHARPEYS WORKSHOP hmm, I tried that as well, didn't work either. I wonder if something is triggering it to not spin? It looks like it tries, but then it just hums.
I don't think so bud if the motor is humming there's definitely something jamming up or an automatic brake maybe
If you use a 6” wire wheel it eats the 3 screws that hold it together inside just saying
thumbs up
Ay -up ..how did you wire up grinder to mains switch
.... left the power switch on?
Speedy Gonzalez, but nice video.
I hope you're wearing safety goggles while the odd wires are hitting the case and flying off at you
And they do.... One stuck in my arm like a needle, they fly out so fast you can't even see them. Glad it wasn't my eye.
I was using one and got a bit of metal in my eyeball. Lucky I had no permanent damage. I highly recommend safety glasses also.
Oh , are you using his eyes to see again? His eyes his choice. Your eyes your choice. I'm so sick of the you tube wanna be safty advisors.
@@wags9777 but maybe he didn't think of it, so it's better that they warn him. then he can decide whether or not to be safe
@@GlassGenius A full face shield is a lot better... especially if a grinding stone breaks apart... knew someone who had that happened to... he survived, but shattered his face ugly bad !
Always start your grind while standing to the side of it, from what I have been told !
Plastic washers?!
welcome to Somalia
I can hear you wire wheel is not balanced it will bugga your grinder in time. Watch this vid below show u how to fix it.

Cheers
+Bad Benny cheers buddy very interesting
Yeah you should have no humming sound, if all is in balance. I had the same problem. It quite as a mouse now. No sound at all.
Does this really need a video? It is one of the easiest things to do. Hold the stone with vice grips when you take the nut off... duh... oh, forget it on the rest, if you are too challenged mentally to suss it out...
"Hold the stone with vice grips" ? !!! Don't listen to this guy. He's making up stuff without thinking. Stones are easy to break and a broken stone is dangerous. Don't grab them that way and never with metal. You can wedge the outer edge into the guard with a door stop though.
