I super appreciate how much you guys try to let the snakes hatch naturally with a little intervention as possible! I've tried watching other channels similar to yours but hated how they were pulling snakes out of their eggs as soon as they pipped/were cut open.
Yeah. And these are pets so a bit of help is expected. Cause there's a major difference between a baby that died because of a bad egg tooth and literally drowned in its own egg, and a baby dying because of say that major spine kink in one of the last few clutches...
@@Tell-Your-Dog-I-Said-Hi Brian doesn't do that anymore from what I've seen. We can't hold things against people when they've made the effort to change bad habits/practices. If you watch his more recent egg cutting videos, he doesn't pull them from the egg even if he has to untangle an umbilical cord. People make mistakes, but if they learn from them and change how they're doing things it's a lesson learned and it should be acknowledged as such rather than thrown up constantly even though they're no longer doing that negative thing.
I must add. For the weighing, you probably need to weigh them the same amount of days after they hatch. Cause the lot that hatched first might have lost some weight in general cause they are older and havnt fed yet. And vis versa.
True, but also a scale that only weighs to the nearest gram is not going to give a ton of accuracy for this. I'm surprised they haven't gotten a scale with more accuracy. Especially when they weigh hognoses, you will see a clear size difference and they will both come out as 3 grams, and one is probably 2.5 and the other 3.4.
I like how gentle you guys are with the animals, all the time, no matter what. All the other bigger "tougher" UA-camrs, I feel like they just be yanking snakes and other animals around, either out of the cage, out of the box, out of the egg, whatever whatever. I'm always thinking "hey hey calm down now" or "whoa no need to whip the poor guy around" you are always very understanding of the animals behavior in a way that's very sweet but also very safe
That's because people that do that are still the idiots who think the "danger" of having a snake is cool, instead of someone who realizes that most reptiles are like regular pet's and be very fulfilling to just hold.
The weight difference can result in the ones hatching first had a week of absorbing their yolk with no food to compensate for the energy spent on moving around and living in general. And the freshly hatched babys are still full of yolk. Similar to human babys drop up to 10% of their birth weight during the first days until Moms Milk is fully there. To compare the babys better in a future experiment, you should weigh them the day they hatch and compare to the second half when they hatch later. Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes. I just commented about this too, I wish I'd seen your comment first 😂 That would be an interesting experiment, to see if it's typical for baby snakes to lose weight during that small window of time, and how much weight is typical to lose.
Yes! I commented, too. Though I think they would need a more accurate scale to see that % change, since theirs rounds to the nearest gram. 10% of a 6 gram snake might not change the reading!
Yeah... and the small sample size doesn't help either. The bigger clutch had both the smallest baby (20g) and the largest baby (26g) which might have skewed things a little. I'd love to see this done with a larger clutch and with weights taken at the same age!
The way Emily and Ed have changed throughout all the videos is just amazing Ed stopped being camera shy and from serious voices and worse audio their probably now the best reptile UA-camrs out there thank you for teaching all of us about these lovely creatures (love u)

So if the parents are 2 different strains of axanthic, what does that mean for the babies genetics-wise? Does it mean that they have the genes for both and present for neither? Would they in turn be able to breed with a partner of either strain and have axanthic babies? The little honker is absolutely adorable
I suspect they are mutations in the same areas but affect those differently, so one animal couldn't have a working copy of both genes, but that's just a guess
It means that all babies are 100% Miami axanthic (what their mother Shakira is), and 50% het ballum axanthic, assuming that's the strain of axanthic Mr. SYG is het for :)
These hatching vids really put into perspective how tiny my hoggie is 😂 he was born over the summer and is about 8.5 inches now, while the other species are bigger right out of the egg! 😊
You should see a newborn Green Anaconda, they are bigger than my full-grown California Kingsnake... My little hoggie is only about a month old. I've never dealt with such a tiny snake, I was afraid he wouldn't be able to swallow a day-old pinkie but he eats like a champ! They are such cute little guys. 😍

Technically the weight experiment wasn't perfect, considering one tub of babies were older than the others (even if it was only a couple days). I think weighing them all the day after all have hatched, and then weighing the others the day after they hatch as well. It would make it a little more accurate 😊
I love how you give them the space to come out on their own with a little support and attempt to save them if they're struggling. It's very responsible and kind.
Just a thought. The incubator babies were older and because they digested their egg yolk longer could have lost weight over the longer time out of the egg. Besides a larger sample size you would need to weigh all the babies on the same day out of the egg.
I'm so excited to see tricolors, I remember them saying the first clutch went bad but that the female had like 2 more clutches so I hope they made it! Also I haven't heard them mention the MBK's so I think the eggs might've gone bad but I hope they didn't
After watching your videos for years, it’s still so exciting to see that you’re learning new stuff all the time. Thank you letting us come on these lil journeys with you 🥰
On average the incubator hatchlings were heavier but the one small one weighing 20g ruined it for them. The biggest was in the incubator. So I would say that one was too small a sample size to make judgements on. 😊 But it’s interesting to see these results.
The incubator babies were lighter. If we do not include the outlier, the incubator babies sum up 23/24/26=73g while the enclosure babies sum 25/24/25=74g. Even without the 20g baby the incubator babies had an average lighter weight, and their weight was more inconsistent, while the enclosure babies had more stable weight
The M with the point on the end is Scorpio! The point resembles the stinger of a Scorpion 🦂 it’s actually very fitting because snakes are also associated with Scorpios ☺️
Wicken’s wicked reptiles does a different style but is responsible, particularly he advocates for very large cage sizes, and goherping has a very good video on the spider gene and its ethics
That was very interesting to learn there's two strains of axanthic with bullsnakes, I wonder what the difference is with them and why they're incompatible. I almost wondered if the more vibrant patternless was a hypo patternless or something, probably not though (I've only seen albino patternless and now standard patternless). Probably just a pretty patternless as there's always variation in morphs :).
Probably different genes. I know in humans they've identified at least a dozen different genes for albinism, for example. If they're in different genes, then a snake het for both would just be normal.

Wish I could post a picture. Found a gorgeous Milk snake at my parent's house last weekend before it got cold in Southern iowa. It was so pretty and had never seen one in person before. Love your videos!
I'm afraid that you can't draw any conclusions about average weights from this experiment, since the runt of the clutch at only 20gms was in the incubator group, and dragged down the average weight by a lot, and it was random chance which group that runt ended up in. Using a different method for finding the average - along with the larger sample sizes you're hoping for in future, would resolve that problem!

Emily: Maybe it's pisces
Me, A Cancer: Sad left out noises
My sister, A Scorpio: I don't like fishing.
Talking about snakes, im very excited! In two or three months, my mom's gonna buy me a snake
I can watch you guys all day especially Rex
thanks for the clarification on Creamsicle!
Wish I could post a picture. Found a gorgeous Milk snake at my parent's house last weekend before it got cold in Southern iowa. It was so pretty and had never seen one in person before. Love your videos!
Imagine someone hearing “don’t eat me shakira, I’m just gonna steal your babies”, out of context
Ed: is that albi- oh no that might be patternless. 😂makes me laugh just me? 🤔
