Ventura County has gold as well on Piru Creek and Muta Creek. There are active gold mines on Frasier Mountain as well. There was a small gold rush there just prior to the gold discovery at Sutter Mill. A small town grew along Piru Creek, but immediately failed as the region was overshadowed. Some say it was due to a curse by the Spanish on the area. Apparently the Spanish had a rich gold mine there, but had to abandon it when Mexico gained it's independence. They sealed it up and cursed it. The are also has the Lost McDonald Mine, another fabled rich find. I recommend checking it out and looking deeper into the lore around the gold in the Los Padres NationalForestq, I greatly summarized it.

Jeff, while driving the other day I had an idea that I think might be a decent, simple way to separate gold, silver, or platinum. Basically a sharp cone open at the wide end, at the top, filled with water. Suspend the cone with a light automotive coil spring. Attach a slightly oval pulley to the side of the cone, and another pulley to the frame of the sorter. Run a belt between the pulleys.
Dump in shovels full of dirt, and then turn the pulley. A motor would be best, but you could do it with a windmill, exercise bike, or by hand.
The oblong pulley wheel would jiggle and shake the whole cone full of dirt and water. Heavy material would settle.
Every now and then, just shovel the least dense dirt out of the top, then add more unsorted dirt.
Eventually, you would end up with a large mass of the densest materials at the bottom of the cone.
Have you ever seen a separator like that? I suppose a dry separator could work on the same principle, but I imagine that the water displacement of lighter minerals would help separate low and high density materials.
I also imagine that a heavy brine solution might be even better for separation.
I have no way to test this, and all I know about gold mining comes from UA-cam videos. Figured I would poke you and see if you had any thoughts.

Jeff you are my personal hero. My old man and I watch you and always chime in when it’s time too... “LETTTTTS GO”
I found my first batch of quartz bearing gold two weeks ago working on extracting but being with limited resources I’m still trying to figure out how to diy extract.
Luckily my hubby works in a machine shop and one of his coworkers is a patreon of yours and now that I have materials to show I know what to look for I’m getting support from these guys who are excited about my finds!
Learning it all from you though, I’m able to identify the indicators and have come upon some interesting minerals.
So continuously watching your videos is my own personal geology class! Father in law is actually getting the detector you recommend
Spending the day in Piru today the water level is low and we just had an earthquake so I’m gonna put your lessons to use again and refreshing my knowledge you’ve so generously imparted.
Thank you for being the BEST and only geologist gold specialist I will watch on here.
    Wish me luck please!

That addit at the hematite outcropping turnout is still there. Checked it out yesterday on the way to the [last remaining] GPAA claim up there. No way my 6-2/220 trained coward body was going into that hole. Crushed up a few samples from the area for nodda, but it was really cool to see. Only a trickle of water this time of year but getting out in the dirt for a while was still awesome. At the claim in the wash, found a few specks of flour down DEEP. Nothing shallow. Had better luck with a few small flakes in the canyon on the north corner of the claim. Area's been worked to death but definitely worth the trip for local GPAA members. Bring good gloves and shoes. Broken glass and shell casings literally everywhere.

@Ask Jeff Wiilliams What about near Fresno? Was the area overlooked because Fresno wasn't established until the post-gold rush & was basically a desert? I know Friant Dam's construction between 1937 and 1942 in which Lost Lake minerals were used & as stated by Kellie Helton "In the late 1930s, crews began working to quarry rock and cement in an area that was later turned into the Lost Lake Recreation Area. During the quarrying process, about 357 pounds of gold was found in the sand and gravel between 1940 and 1942."

You were lucky to find that spec 😆 that area has been hammered for years! I've never found much in that area. For me it's not about the amount but just being out there. But coming home with a few specks is not much fun because I drive an hour to get there so I don't waste gas going to places that don't have much. But you certainly inspire people to get there! I'm ready to get out every day!!!
