- Before Photoshop and tablets and 300-page art manuals describing what type of hat a detective might wear in post-Phyrexian War Ravnica - Magic art design was wild! 😵💫 Jeff Laubenstein remembers it clearly and oh my, is he glad to share his memories!
Our cameraman Honza conducted an interview with him during his latest visit to Prague where he signed and altered cards for hundreds of his fans competing in the European Premodern Championship 2024. Jeff is just the sweetest guy and a real treat to listen to: about his early day inspirations, his most iconic cards, his love of comics and projects he would still like to finish. This video is that - and more!

Jeff is a real one for sure.
When I was approaching his booth at Eternal Weekend Prague 2025, he was talking to another fan of his art.
That guy expressed his uncertainty about wether Jeff would remember their previous conversations - but Jeff appeared to be almost ready if not even prepared to name multiple!
What a great little story! ❤️ Thanks for sharing it with us.
Jeff you are the best!
Show and Tell is one of my favorite artworks in all of MTG. Seriously one of the reasons I built legacy sneak and show nearly 10 years ago.
Jeff is awesome!
Met Jeff for what I think was Magic 25th Anniversary in Barcelona (2018). That Saturday I gave him a Recurring Nightmare from my Vintage cube for him to sign and alter and took home the new Recurring (with his new teddy bear alter). That day I also won one of the tournaments that classified me for the special Rochester Unlimited draft for Sunday. I was so happy with the first alter that the following day I brought back my signed copy of Show and Tell for him to also alter and Jeff suggested to add more, bigger tentacles and eyes to the artwork... I left him my card to collect it later on but waiting for my event, it basically slipped my mind and when I realised it was just too late, our event finished at 11pm and everybody else had packed up and gone! Some days later I sent him an email and his immediate response was: "I am very happy you have written.. I had hoped to hear from you as I do have your card completed and would like to get it to you." I received it not long after, he sent it free of charge also to top it off, and I still cherish the card and that encounter to this day.
Wow, he certainly went above and beyond on that one! More and more evidence that his love for his fans and art is genuine. Great stuff.
Love his style
Jeff for me will always be the guy who illustrated Shadowrun v2. Love his work.
Mark Zug worked on Shadowrun as well, I believe. Love his work
