I rode a 2011 BMW R1200 GS for 8 years in the US before moving to France, and it broke my heart to sell it-I had it modified exactly to my taste. Once here, I ended up with a new Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports, partially because the Honda was €5000 cheaper than a similarly equipped new R1250GSA. Also, service and parts cost less, which was something that always hurt me whenever I had the BMW to the dealer. However, despite loving my ATAS, I’m afraid I still miss the characteristics of beautiful handling and that torquey “tractor” engine of the BMW GSA. Maybe in a year or two I’ll switch back, but first the Honda deserves a lot of riding first. Great review! Thank you.
Thanks for the input. Africa Twin is an interesting choice after the GS and as you say - there are things that GS is fantastic at. Now with the 2021 upgrades (to equipment), it's really a complete package with the new 1250 engine. I think that it's worth waiting for a design update that should happen pretty soon. The current R1250GS looks the same as 2013 model year, so after 8 years, we should soon see its new form. Then I'd go for it. All the best!
BMW 2018 GSA. The bike doesn't always fall and stay on the boxer sides. It has fallen many times with tank touching the ground. The stalling of the engine on low speeds can be due to dirty throttle body. If your mileage has also dropped and you note engine stalling on low RPM then it's definitely dirty throttle body. The maintenance costs are very high but it's an awesome machine😉
Have had a '13 R1200GS LC a year now, 13,000 miles: Bought it for two up camping, the 8" of rear travel gives pillion comfort and the Michelin Adventure tires give it good gravel road capabilities one or two up. Rented a'15 in Ireland for 2,000 miles in '16 and a '10 1200GS oilhead in '18 for 3,000 miles before the buy. Besides crosswinds off the Atlantic that suddenly stop and start at walls, do not steer the bike one bit, your helmet whips around but the front tire stays true, awesome. Love it. Best add was a Denali D7 on CanSmart to help the LED high beam at night.
These bike are indeed great companions for longer trips. Feel even like family members to some. It's a very enjoyable feeling that these bikes give - I agree with that. I'm glad that you're enjoying the GS family!
Thanks and I'm glad you like the videos. I'm familiar with the Tiger 1200 and in my opinion it's quite similar to previous R1200GS which probably scores in most areas a little bit, except for engine power and smoothnes. But they seem to be quite similar. I remeber this was my main impression. If you're considering R1250GS, so the newest one, you may really like it along with its superb handling.

I avoided the gs for decades constantly swapping Hondas , Triumphs and Yamahas. Then I tried the GS while my bike was being serviced. That was it. It's the only adventure bike I'll ever have.
Have a BMWS1000XR 2016 it had the same problem of late response on actuating the throttle and surprise staling of engine on leaving a corner. Fixed it by using Bren Tuning Moto : idle is now 1350 instead of 1250 and throttle response quicker now, as well as lowering threshold activation of radiator fan to 85 celsius so enduring less heat from engine.
Thanks for sharing this. It's interesting, however the issue is weird. I'd think that BMW should've fixed that for you. Still, I'm glad that you've found a solution, even though you had to do it on your own.
It depends on what you like and prefer yourself. As a whole package, so considering handling, suspension comfort, build quality and performance, it should be better. Considering performance only, it definitely is not.
Seen Spy shots of the New GS1300. It will be smaller than the present models and fully watercooled rather than just the heads. Head light although disguised looked like a single central unit. I must admit I like the present look more.
I talked to my friend who’s a bmw dealer and they confirmed it will be an m model and no news on a gs1300. Just the m version which means will be more money!!!
11:00 Chain dirty....lol So is the BMW GS Final drive which is prone to water ingress! you just don't see it rust! latest models also seem more prone to drive shaft failure!
Thanks for sharing but I've never heard of such issues in GS or RT for that matter. Sure it happens to some but with such a large number of those bikes on the streets, there must be at least a few with any kind of failure there. The question is how common it is and so far I believe that these may be incidents. And well, I hope because drive shaft issues may not be cheap to fix.
First time I see someone speaking or writing about the difficulty of starting/stalling. I thought I was stupid when that happened to me in a rental GS. It didnt stall but I was very afraid it could happen. I thought it was that first gear is way too long so the shaft is more protected from a too high torque. For me this is something I dont like about this bike. Mine is an older versys 1000, silky smooth clutch and gears. In two days of use I couldnt shift gears fast like in mine. (it had no quickshift, but mine neither). Regards
It's been present in a GS for years at least from 2009 when I first rode one (new). I still don't know the exact reasons for it but I'd be guessing that it's an engine characteristics thing. It's got 2 cylinders and such engines, boxers or others, have a tendency of rapidly dying. Some do even when riding. Here in a GS it's pretty consistent exactly when setting off.

It will then depend on how tall you are and how long trips you're doing. I'd say that I cannot really see a reason for choosing an ADV unless you like the way it looks, you ride so much that it will be much more comfortable for you to have to fill the tank less often or you're so tall that your legs will thank you for getting the taller ADV. Other than these, I'd spend the money saved on accessories.
@@VToldsMotoShow Thanks a lot! I dont make any long trips, maybe becuse i dont have adv? :D I really like ADV look, so propably 2021 i choose 1250 ADV. Thanks!
Go for the HP version with the sport suspension. This way you have the height of the adventure but with the lower weight of the non-adventure. Plus, the HP feels more nimble and seems to turn in quicker than the adventure👍
I'm short :( 163cm but i really really want to get this bike, i basically live in a city , so traffic stop is so normal , if i cant reach the floor it would be a big problem , d you think it's possible ?
If you cannot reach the ground, it's not possible to ride as you'll fall every time and won't be even able to set off. Btu maybe if you lower the suspension and install a lower seat, you might kind of dive deeper with the whole one side of your body to support yourself at traffic stops. Will require some trickery but this may work. It's not THAT much taller then than all random motorcycles.
After watching a lot of fan videos and after a good price quote, the test drive with the GS was a real disappointment for me. The front plexiglass vibrates disturbingly on uneven roads. The motorcycle is simply too tall for street use which is why its balance is much worse than that of my BMW R1200 R. The factory exhaust sound is not a great experience either. Sitting back on my own bike, I was convinced that the GS was not designed for me, because mine is a much better controllable, more nimble bike, with similar comfort and, due to its design, better driving characteristics. For longer mountain tours and for some dynamic riding, the R series remains my choice, because the GS is an unnecessarily tall bike even in it's lowest position setting with all its negative implications until I go on dirt roads, just like 81% of GS owners never do
Makes sense from this perspective. There are some things that GS offers that R may not, like longer suspension travel and likely more comfy ride over bumps etc. Other than that, R does have some of the same advantages like the front Telelever suspension, torquey boxer etc. Good that you rest rode the GS.

Perhaps that's why they avoid sending new orders and try to work with what they have. Still, that's a wrong approach. Proof of that is your comment here - it's annoying having to fight that. If you want your own spec, they should give it to you or get out of business. That's a big issue in the automotive industry in general. Hopefully they will improve their procedures/customer service.

Wow, this is interesting and thank you for sharing that as Africa Twin's name is as legendary as the GS. The only thing that initially comes to my mind is that the GS is a lot more powerful, especially now. And then what you said makes a lot of sense since off the road, power doesn't make a difference and it won't help you unless you want to jump further on a long stretch of dirt road. AT looks cool too! Take care!
The GS is a great adventure motorcycle that makes light off-road and freeways alone or in pairs in a brilliant way, really. Despite this, I think the KTM adventure series is better in any type of off-road and of course on the road, where the Multistrada is also better. The GS is relatively heavy and lazy because the nature of the engine and power to weight ratio.
I believe that Multi is more agile indeed in terms of engine. However, I’m almost 100% sure that nothing beats R1250/1200GS on a curvy road - that’s regarding its balancing and neutral behavior. It’s really awesome on curves. It’s worth renting one or test riding it to see what BMW have done with it. And as you pointed out - yeah, KTM was born to handle off-roading the best. Perhaps the new Africa Twin could be a good match for it there.
@@VToldsMotoShow if you try the KTM you will find that it is amazing too -including steering corrections and deep trail braking while turning. I ride a KTM 1090 mainly on a road that has a similar horsepower weight ratio to the GS but I'm not adore any brand, overall the three are excellent and it comes to nuances and personal preferences. Some friends says the Africa suspensions are too soft for hard off road. The only (and difficult) problem with the 1090S is the windshield - in curved roads it might be better from all the above including the Multistrada because of the weight.
Thanks for putting some light on the KTM matter. I really like the 1290 Super Adventure and 1190 one, it's just that they have literally no real dealerships in this part of the world, so anythings happens, people are mostly on their own. It has also always been hard for me to manage to get any bike from them. If I were to choose a bike today, I'd consider R1250GS, Multi and KTM 1290 Super Duke GT. I'm super curious about this one and having a more on-road oriented chassis and fron wheel than Super Adventure, it may be awesome to ride on the streets.
I almost bought gs 1200 or 1250 i have test ride both several times but to be honest it always appears to me gs engine looks like all the inside of the stomach coming out of the body no matters how hard I tried not to see that way. Sorry but engine it so ugly I can't live with....
Haha, now that's sounding funny but I do understand your concerns. If you don't like something, your motorcycle shouldn't have it as it would annoy you. There are some other choices that can give you what you want and not annoy you with things that you cannot accept.

If you're happy with your bike with no intention to change, don't make the same mistake as I did. DON'T ever take a GS for a test ride.
Good one.
No k.......znowu dzibarisz po angolsku 🤨
Już za chwilę dorzucę polskie łamańce językowe o najnowszym i rzekomo najlepszym aucie świata! Przed nowym rokiem powinno być online ;)
👌👌🌹
You speak like Gru from Despicable me 😅
Bloody hell! Where are those things even coming from?! :)
