Thank god they kept one of his main characteristic, he's a master strategist who use culture and art to find strenght and weakness in enemies ! I guess Dave Filoni was a fan ! The entire interrogation scene has to be the one of the most interesting introductions to a villain ever. He sees this single object and immediately knows who she is, why she's there, and that there is a rebel that will likely be a stormtrooper in disguise. But he doesn't reveal it; he continues his quiet, slow monologue, and even shows a mild amount of respect to her. That single monologue tells you everything about what this guy is like and why he is so dangerous. There's a concept that really intimidating people, don't need to shout. And Thrawn whispers

Thrawn is a interesting character, the only alien imperial in a high position. He faced discrimination to get where is today. Won't reveal too much about him since Disney sort of rewrote him when they bought star wars. He was the villain after the emperor and vader died that luke and his friends had to face in the original sequel series from the 1990's.

While they never touched upon the discrimination story in Rebels, I feel like this episode gave us a subtle hint in the scene where Thrawn is about to rip Slavin's throat out. Slavin is the type of racist prick that thrawn had to deal with way too many times in his career.

*”To defeat an enemy you must know them, not simply there battle tactics, but their history, philosophy, art.”* Thrawn is one of my all time favorite villains and characters in general because what makes him dangerous and formidable is not strength or skills, it’s his mind. He is the nightmare fusion of Tyrion Lannister, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Sherlock Holmes.
And what make him unique as a tactician and strategist is that he can understand everything about his opponents based solely on their art!

I love this episode because it highlights an aspect of the Empire's tyranny that often isn't focused on. Not only is the Empire forcibly occupying many worlds, stripping them of their resources and subjugating their people, but they also try to erase the indigenous cultures. Like, to most people (especially the empire), the Kalikori is just an object but to people like Hera, it's a symbol of their culture, their history, their values; something they must protect! For many in the galaxy under the Empire, their culture is all they have left. It's really cool when episodes like this and some in season 1 of Andor touch on this because it continues to flesh out why so many people oppose the Empire.
Also, idk if it was like this for anyone else but when I heard them say "kalikori" in this show it immediately reminded me of Kalikori Village, a setting in the game Star Wars the Old Republic; which of course is also populated by Twi'leks.

Thrawn is a huge deal whenever he appears. As long as he can think, he is a serious threat to anyone who calls him their enemy.
While his creator Timothy Zahn said that Rebels' Thrawn and his book's Thrawn are the same person, just in a different socio-political situation, I personally feel that this show, as much as I love it, barely does his unrivaled brilliance justice.
But for people who never read his books, I think it should be sufficient.

To me, it's not just a sentimental thing. The empire is colonizing, forceably assimilating, and ethnic cleansing Hera's home world. I think there's an internal struggle there between feeling like you are abandoning/letting die your home, your culture, and your history versus doing what may be best to win the war. But even if you win the war, you may lose those artifacts and cultural cornerstones forever anyway (much like how British museums are still chalked full of artifacts that were stolen by cultures the British occupied during the peak of the British empire). I like how Rebels and subsequent series have expanded past "the Empire is bad because the Emperor is evil and the Death Star blows up planets" to "the Empire is bad because it is an empire," and by definition participates in mass enslavement, racism, the general oppression of individuality, the genocide of cultures, and the removal of freedom of thought, and mass murder.

There are basically two versions of Thrawn (for reasons that remain unknown). Both are tactically and intellectually brilliant but this version we see in Rebels is a ruthless villain who, like Vader, will kills his subordinates for their failures and is feared rather than respected. The other version is the complete opposite, one who has sympathy sometimes even for his enemy but has the utmost respect for his subordinates, treats them like family and will reward them for success but if they fail, he'll make sure they know WHY they failed so they don't fail again. It's funny that in the books, some of which take place at this exact moment in the SW history, making references to Ezra and Kanan, he is the 'good' version of Thrawn but in the TV shows he is the bad version of the character. It's really a little bit strange why they would have such contrasting versions of the same character.

I love that Filoni is mining the old EU for character like Thrawn to bring into current continuity. I think people overstate how much of a "genius" he is but I like that he is an effective leader an tactician unlike almost every other Imperial officer. I think General Veers, Tarkin and now some of the Andor ISB folks like Dedra are the only Imperials that ever seemed like a real threat. The Empire has endless material resources but the worst leadership. Lars Mikkelson voices him better than I could have hoped for and one of the only things I am hyped for in Ahsoka season 2 is seeing if they can show him being being an effective leader not just some corny antagonist like Krenic, Gideon, or the endless parade of asshats the Imperial put in charge.

The Legends trilogy is also very good but not really relevant since it's not canon anymore and might honestly spoil some elements of the mandoverse movie which a lot of people suspect Filoni will pull from those books.

The Empire heavily discriminates against non human races; the fact that Thrawn rose to the rank that he did, is a testament to how capable of a leader he is. Given that discrimination, it's pretty obvious, his outburst against Slavin wasn't just about his disdain for art.
