    The only drawback of the system I can see is if potatoes turn green from light you don't want to eat them. You need to have a light block of some kind.

    if you lower that tank to ground might help water pressure, head height might be an issue because it looks like that is the highest point out of all your water flows, and I am thinking that you are using one pump for all those grow beds.

    Increasing pressure may require a secondary pump.
    Rotational sprinkler heads may give you a greater droplet rate and spread the water evenly.
    Love the idea.

    Hi there, I appreciate and relate to your experimentation related to gardening. I have an indoor half-hydroponic, half-aquaponic garden under grow lights in my small city apartment and have been trying for two seasons to figure out how to successfully grow potatoes using hydro or aquaponics, so I love that you're trying different techniques. That said, just some feedback for your video - you really rambled and rambled. It was 5 minutes into the video before you got out of your chair, and it was 10 minutes into the video before you even got around to showing what was supposed to be the subject - your potato setup. Then you didn't actually show potatoes growing. So you had 10 minutes of buildup and about six minutes of talking about your potato system, and then another minute of talk at the end. It would be helpful if your video was much more succinct and to the point. Regarding your actual setup, I've seen aeroponic systems, but generally they are open-air. I'm assuming your potatoes will grow in the air inside the bucket? How will you keep them from molding/rotting in the dampness of the constant water in the bucket? I hope this system works, I'd love to see it in operation further into your grow.

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому +5

      It's all about experimentation for me:) Yeah, I know I can ramble but I have tried to change over to what people want to see only to have others tell me they want to know more about me and I put out less content. So, now I just do what I want and people can ether watch or not. That is how I look at it now a days because I cannot make everyone happy.
      I have not seen an open air aeroponic system so I don't know. I have seen them grown in barrels so I am hopping with my barrel there will be room for them to breath:) Yes, the plan is to grow them in the air in the barrel (not the bucket). I may put the water on a timer to get the amount of water I need but I want to test it to see if I need to use a timer:)

      @@homefarmideas only thing I would do is put more pots in top and use drip misting nozzles put on timer so roots have a drying period to avoid root issues. Thanks for showing the barrel. I am most certainly going to create this. Blessings

    Matt, I have an aeroponics system. One of the things that I found to be important was NOT to have the water running constantly. I am growing in a vertical tube with 2 inch net pots. Pump is on a timer, 15 min on, 15 minutes off. System is inside, so temp control not an issue. I found root rot to be an issue with many different plants when I ran the water constantly.

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому

      Very good observation Russ:) I am also finding that when water is running all the time the roots seem to grow longer and thicker instead of growing fine hair like roots. Please get back to me on this but I wanted to ask you how you are running 15min on 15min off?

      I don't know about potatoes but MJ plants seem to thrive when you dry them out and then water. When you grow in soil, you can touch with a finger if the soil is dry and when it's completely dry you can still wait a couple of hours until watering. I believe the reason why they thrive and produce more yield is stress. The plants are strong and in nature, it doesn't rain all of the time so they have time to dry. How about setting a timer for watering similar way to growing lights?

    I was looking at trying to do this also but I'm hoping to solve the same issue you ask, which is get enough pressure to possibly fine mist the roots instead of just having the water lightly sprayed onto them. I would recommend one thing to get the blue barrels to help with the algae issue. I'm hoping your barrel turned out well for you. Great idea.

    Hey Matt,
    I am new at this and am planning on getting into aquaponics soon. I have been watching videos on youtube to learn as much as I can about aquaponics, aquaculture, hydroponics and now aeroponics. The one thing I remember learning is how to control your algae in your white bucket. I understand too much sunlight causes the built up of the algae in your white bucket. So, one of the best thing to do that I learnt, is to paint the lower portion of the bucket where the the roots hang down with a dark color to reduce or completely cut out the sunlight. I personally would use a black color. Another observation I made, just your watching your video is, if the potato does grow, how is the weight of the potato going to be supported by just the plant itself. I do not have an answer for this, but I am curious to want to learn if you or anyone can figure out that.
    Elvie

      Hey:) If you notice in the video I talk about snails I have that eat algae. I am thinking about using like 3 in the barrel if the algae gets out of control. I also that about using something to cover the barrel so I may still do that but if I where you I would stay away from black. It can heat the water up to much and really mess with root growth. I am wanting the potatoes to hand down and I am hopping the root system will hold up the spuds. All the photos I have seen with aeroponic potatoes do not have anything to hold them up so I will try to see if they can hold themselves up for now:)

      With aeroponics, the air temperature in the rootzone is more important than the water temperature. Burying most of the barrel in the ground is the most effective solution for an outdoor system but its a lot of digging ;) I`d recommend putting 4 plants in each barrel with a central high pressure nozzle. Plenty of space in a barrel for 4 root bundles 2.5-3ft iong by 9" in diameter ;)

    I know this is a bit old, but have you tried running the misters off your garden hose? it's about 150 to 200psi. run the hose into a pressurized reservoir that holds nutrients. at the base of the reservoir run a feed line up to the top, then run the nutrients line with emitter through the barrel.

  • @peterciurea7771
    @peterciurea7771 6 років тому +3

    Try adding a spray tip to your water lines, that will improve your results. Nutrient Film Technique(NFT) is based on the idea of creating a large surface of water and nutrient (the film in NFT) Thi surface area will be sought out by the roots, and they wil cause rapid growth if done right. With water flowing from the spaghetti line to the root, you are not creating a large surface area, so in effect the plant is root bound.You need to think thru creating surfaces that can support a large area of the film. This is why most use inert media fillers like perlite, rockwool or hydroton. They greatly increase this surface area but also create the issue of keeping too much of the water around, which chokes out oxygen. The one way to manage the waterlogging is using timers to start and stop the water cycle.You can dial that in based on each plants need. If you are using a continuous cycle, then you need to balance natural aeration and film surface area. Air pumps with airstones in the water tank help, oxygen concentrators are a step up from plain air pumps.
    Aeroponics on the other hand use high pressure water and micronizing tips so that the water gets continuously distributed in the entire volume of the container, in effect turning a 2d surface film into a 3d space. Aero also needs water cycles, but they are managed in minutes on minutes off, to not let the roots dry too much. In my view, Aero is the most difficult to get right, as most failures will kill the plants if not attended to in a few hours.

    Hey bro,
    Thank you for sharing your experience.
    You can indeed cut a bit of blabla but part of that it is a detailed presentation. It is a pity that we did not see it working in real life.
    You can improve the system by having a fog of water inside, 10 sec every minute. You'll save a lot of water. Good luck.
    Also, it looks like a lot of tubing. I learned the hard way that whatever you do in hydro/aeroponics you can undo easily.☺

      Be sure the netpot is well secured to the lid or the weight of the roots can drag it down into the chamber. The roots will be plenty strong enough to support the weight of the potatoes. I might have to give aero spuds a go myself.

    Forget the spray nozzles and go for one or more mini spinners (not sure if that is the right name but you know what I mean). Pressure is not an issue - these things only need to keep the roots damp. Some solution will bounce off the walls and hit the plants indirectly and it will always be a humid environment. You can use a tiny submersible pump and fit a black poly tube riser directly to it and just run the micro fittings off that near the root zone.

  • @jhager03
    @jhager03 5 років тому

    easiest way to increase water pressure is to 1 increase the diameter of your main pipes. 2 elevate the water tanks. between the gravity assist, and the diameter reduction between the mainline and the 1(or 3/4 which ever you were using in the vid) youll get a significant pressure boost. 3 you might also consider closing all the valves on your entire system one time, and allowing back pressure to build as you open them 1 at a time. oh and dont use that T at the top of the barrel that you have feeding those lines, its halving the pressure on each line compared to what it was coming in at, instead use an end cap and drill a hole for each water feed in then seal it with silicone. im willing to bet the pressure issue can be resolved mostly by addressing a lack of back pressure in the lines(if you can hear the water going through the lines then there is air in the lines, this causes pressure loss it also means theres a lack of back pressure). also you might want to seal up any holes in larger pipe like what your using for the barrels drain into the larger pipe to your tank. a tap n die and a threaded male end + silicone sealant is all you need, you do want that if you want to maintain stable pressure in your system, it helps keep your water cleaner too.
    id be interested to find out how this tower went, about to go through your videos now hoping youve posted it. if not if you could let me know how the harvest went on the aeroponic potatos itd be awesome. that could be really useful for an E85 solution on a homestead.

    To get more pressure use a larger pipe system, but you are doing fine how you are the plants will take the water they want. If you're not happy with the water system for the potatoes then pump some water to a pond, place the plants in a piece of polystyrene (Instead of a plastic lid) and let the polystyrene float on top of the pond. Remember to add some air to the pond so it doesn't go stale and full of green algae. Lastly stop stressing over your camera you're doing great!

    Some can only take constructive criticism as a slap in the face. Some can never accept being told they could do something better. Good luck.

      When you’re giving constructive criticism (and that is your true heart behind it) then you could very easily say “I’m sorry, I meant it to be constructive. I know how text can be misconstrued”. Instead you lecture me about taking so-called constructive criticism as a slap in the face. Basically, you’re giving your criticism with pride and that is what I don’t like. Someone that does not make videos versus someone that has made over 500 videos seems to me to know nearly nothing about what people want to see. Obviously I’m not the best out there but I am certainly ahead of you in my experience.
      Let me know if you ever need help with some videos and overall gardening. Next time save the sarcasm and the dictations and be more respectful. If you are you will get the same back😉

    Can't see potatoes being successful.
    Wieght of tubers hanging on roots.
    In the ground you plant em in bottom of furrow and mound them as they grow. They produce tubers up the stem

      Over and over again ;) Not to mention this is mostly for fun and believe me I make more than that on making these videos alone. I make 10 times that amount per year from just the videos I make.

      Not sure but to me it is just about a video game:) Zelda...

      Home Farm Ideas damn that's from Zelda and I never even realized it. I used to play before I understood the meanings of symbols. Symbology and numerology are the main communication methods of secret societies but they also have an affect subliminally. The "as above so below", rise of the Phoenix, horns and sun worship symbols are all on the shirt. Hey good video and I appreciate the work you put in to help me get educated on everything I possibly can about aquaponics. Good stuff
