      I would expect it to do fairly well. It is also being made by Retro Game Studios (the same ones who made the original trilogy). So, I would expect it to do fairly well. I DO feel that another rerelease of Metroid Prime Trilogy (it was rereleased for the Wii U as a digital download) for the Switch would be a great way to get people to catch up with the Metroid Prime story arc, before the release of Metroid Prime 4.

      Metroid 5 would be the perfect antidote for the restarting of prime 4 and the huge delay it'll bring. Samus returns should have been on switch to begin with, but failing that, an ambitious 2d metroid should have certainly been made before prime 4 released.

    On the marketing, Samus Return's was really flubbed imo. Remember how it was revealed? They didn't even reveal it in the E3 2017 direct; they waited till after that was over, and then they were randomly playing it on the treehouse. Of course I saw it, but there's no telling how many other people were just going to watch the Direct itself and shove off. It's likely that a lot of people who watched their E3 show that year had no clue that the game evem existed. And yeah, it being on the 3ds at that time was also a huge issue. I really hope they give the next games focus during Directs, whether that be Prime 4 or the rumored 2d Metroid that might be releasing.

    • @noswanson1982
      @noswanson1982 4 роки тому +2

      I think part of the reason Samus' Return was even considered and released was because of AM2R. When that game came out, it was absolutely amazing. Up until Nintendo shut it down, it was quite talked about. I got it and played it and loved it. It was the fan service that the game series needed and I think it brought attention to the fact that Nintendo neglected to provide ANYTHING to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Metroid game series.

    I've never played a Metroid game, but I can speak from some experience exposure-wise.
    Among the community when I was in middle/high school, I've heard nothing but utmost praise for the series. And yet, I rarely if at all saw any exposure from Nintendo in their commercial properties at the time. Of course stuff like Mario, Kirby, Pokemon, Zelda and such had their place, but also smaller franchises like Star Fox and even Mother felt like they took more to the spotlight then Metroid by comparison. I suppose as a casual gamer at the time, I would've be given that little push to try it if that marketing was a bit stronger.
    Makes a lot more sense seeing those sales now. :|

    It seems to me that Metroid going in and out of hiatus is more of an internal thing with Nintendo than it is sales numbers, kind of like Berserk (I think?) if you've ever read that manga. Any game selling a million units is great and Prime 1 nearly made it to 3 million on the Gamecbe of all things. From the years of 2002 to 2007, a 5 year time period, 7 Metroid games were released. 5 of those 7 games were core titles, and twice within this 7 year window, 2 core games are released in the same year. That sounds impossible for any franchise, let alone Metroid. It's somewhat because of this that many people at Retro Studios left to do other things since working on the Prime Trilogy non-stop was very intense. Since Sakamoto seems to be "in charge" of the whole series to the point where, at minimum, he's a consultant on every game he isn't directly in charge of, whether or not games happen is probably up to him in some way.

    • @DuoStuff
      @DuoStuff  4 роки тому +1

      That is a fair point. Especially as of late certain franchises have been on hiatus due to a lack of interest on Nintendo's part. (See: Donkey Kong.) In this case though, Nintendo still is likely taking sales numbers into account. Regardless of the series sales numbers are vital to keeping it going, and while Metroid isn't doing horrendously, a lack of growth certainly isn't helping it. Alongside this the numbers still aren't high enough to be considered "high priority" like other series, meaning that Nintendo will likely choose other series over it in cases where a developer needs to go to one project or another. We've even seen evidence of this directly in Metroid's case as well. Next Level Games originally pitched a 2D Metroid project before Nintendo shafted it in favor of reviving Luigi's Mansion. (Which I also love so I wasn't too mad.)
      Sorry for the long comment. I just like getting comments like this. =D

      I'm hopeful we'll get a new one on the Switch soon. I just hope that when it releases the Nintendo fanbase is in a better mood than it is in this year. Nintendo's lack of transparency and lack of games this year seems to really be irritating people, and I don't want Metroid releasing in this kind of climate.

    Prime 4 needs to be on the same level as the rest of the main trilogy, with the internet bigger than ever and will be even bigger by the time it releases, then all of the good reception will raise the eyes of new comers especially since another beloved game super Metroid is on NSO. Zelda was already massively popular BOTW’s praise attracted a lot of new players and there’s tons of people I see that BOTW is their first Zelda.

    I love metroid to death, I can't wait to finish prime 1 because I am having so much fun with that game. Metroid aside I want nintendo to try something new with F-zero, quite possibly a more PG but futuristic GTA style game, with C.Falcon going around solving crimes involving hi-speed chase races and strategy to take down multiple criminals at once. It would be a complete 180 from the traditional F-zero games but I feel with the right direction and proper marketing nintendo can have another heavy hitter. Now I'm imagining how fun it would be having Falcons agility and move set displayed in smash as a gameplay mechanic in a open space also being able to call on the Blue falcon like the batmobile in arkham knight sounds really cool.

    Super Metroid holds a special place in my heart. It was my childhood adventure game as I never played Final fantasy or Zelda games until later. I remember buying Fusion but being frustrated at how much more difficult it felt compared to SM. The first Prime was also amazing to me but I again got frustrated at the control system and how daunting the bosses were. Honestly when I got stuck on Metroid Prime final form I just gave up and never bought a Metroid since. It just put me off the Prime series entirely and everything since from Metroid hasn't appealed to me. Its kind of hard to carpture the magic of Super Metroid in a new game nowadays.

      Metroid Prime controls _way_ better in Trilogy, putting the sensor bar to insanely clever use. There's also a keyboard and mouse mod if you're interested in emulation. You should give it another shot. Maybe dust off a Wii U and get MPT off the eShop if you still have one lying around.

    Just watched a few of your videos covering Metroid (they're really good and its nice to see a new fan of the series). Though I'm late to comment on this video.
    I'm surprised they have not done a re-release of Samus Returns on the Switch. Give it a few control tweaks and some graphical touch ups and it would look great in handheld mode. It would probably cheap to do and sell enough to recoup costs and draw interest to the Metroid series. I know I'd buy it and play it again. I have a friend that might even pick it up were it released on Switch. Hell they could even throw in Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission as extras. Then you could play all the 2D Metroids on the Switch. That might help drum up sales and interest.
    Also a remaster of Metroid Prime Trilogy might be a good idea for the Switch. Though honestly at this point. I'm hoping that Metroid Prime 4 does not release on the Switch. Anyone that reads this comment is going to be like "What, why?". Well it got delayed. We have no idea when its coming out. Certainly does not look like 2021 (unless they surprise us with a launch reveal in the next few months of this year). Honestly it needs to come out on the successor console to the Switch, be that Switch 2 or whatever daft name Nintendo gives it. Unless Switch lives a unhealthy long time like the 3DS line. I'd want it front and centre on new hardware not aged hardware at the end of a consoles life cycle when less people are likely to buy it.

    Metroid is an awesome idea. I really like the story, but, and this is just my opinion... It's a bit too extreme with it's map style and hidden path thing. I HATE getting lost in games or feeling like I don't know where to go. I recently tried playing super Metroid again and I've beaten it before but it had been years. I got lost a few times and spent time trying to backtrack and find a door I missed or a path I didn't bomb. It was maddening. I finally succumb to the boredom of not knowing where to go. I was having fun up until that point. I think that's what scares people away from Metroid games ultimately. Great narrative and fun when you know where to go, but don't dare lose your way or forget something or you're screwed. That being said, I'm gonna buy a switch when dread comes out and support it and give it a shot. OG here, Metroid on NES was one of the first games I beat when I was like 7. Took me A LONG time and used to freak me out. I hope it ultimately succeeds.

    I have Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii, and it is still a great game to visit every once in a while. However, the friend tokens really kind of takes away from the game. Once Nintendo shut down its Wii servers, the loss of the ability to exchange friend tokens made it impossible to 100% the game and get all collectibles. While that isn't a deal-breaker for me, it is a major annoyance. The remake should get rid of that system altogether. Federation Force seems like it'd be a great game to tack on to a Metroid Prime Trilogy remake to include some type of multiplayer component (besides the admittedly crappy multiplayer mode of Metroid 2). While I don't think the game needs more in terms of adding new areas to the games already there, I think adding a few Switch exclusive functionality to make it seem newer, and multiple control configurations would make it an awesome game for the Switch library.

    I think prime is a good direction for 3-d Metroid games to continue in but with more advanced gameplay features that are strictly optional.
    For 2-d things get more complicated. With games like hollow knight it has to compare to, a more open ended story with obscured details would get some vested interest.

    Lets hope that since the Switch is in more hands that Metroid Prime 4 will make a good boost in sales. I know I'm pre-purchasing that day 1. I love the Prime series, but did you know they've wanted to implement Kraid ever since the first Prime? He was originally going to be in the mines, but I guess the gamecube power wasn't enough. So here's to hoping that the Switch will be powerful enough to handle him in all his glory. If not, it's ok, because seeing that Retro Studios is re-taking the helm- I'm sure they'll know where to steer the series.

    I love Metroid but the fan base is more noise and less action. I don't really blame Nintendo for leaving Metroid on ice for so long, after they invested so hard during the GCN/GBA/DS/WII era. Even though Other M is controversial, it was still a risk they were taking. I don't know if Nintendo can do much about sales without changing completely to be a cinematic action game or some shit. It's just a genre that will never make Zelda or Mario numbers. But they do care enough about it to throw the whole Prime 4 away and start from scratch. Other companies would release what they have and call it the day.
    With that being said, Nintendo could do more. I get it why Samus returns came out only for the 3ds, it's cheaper to make a SD game, but a dual release on the 3ds and Switch, would boost Metroid popularity. BOTW was the first Zelda of a whole new generation, that will happen with Prime 4 but that could have happen with Samus returns.
    Now, here's one point that annoys me a lot. When Cadence of Hyrule was announced i was torned. It was nice that Nintendo that was giving their franchises to indie studios but why Zelda? It's my favorite franchise of all medias but i have to say, the Zelda franchise is not lacking new games, we basically got one every year since 2011. Why not give Metroid to a studio that already does metroidvania? It probably won't cost much and the risk of loosing money is low, but expose the franchise to a big audience until the big 3d game comes out.

    I think Metroid is ripe for an expansion in its gameplay types. The universe is rich enough to cover different types of games including FPSes, space operas RPG and horror games.

    • @nmomose2865
      @nmomose2865 4 роки тому

      I COMPLETELY disagree. Metroid is specifically in the Metroidvania genre. Not an FPS or rpg. If u have done ur research on the original Metroid prime. Everybody thought it would be an FPS and they were OUTRAGED about that. And also I just can’t see metroid being an rpg. Metroid has always been about exploration not shooting. I do like the idea of it being a horror game though. As long as Nintendo kept those open world elements I would love to play a horror Metroid game.

    • @philippefutureboy7348
      @philippefutureboy7348 4 роки тому +1

      I understand your reasoning - Metroid was and is still loved for its approach to exploration using the open world with lock & key design it pioneered.
      I’d argue however that Metroid is more than its genre. Metroid is a rich universe with lore and environmental storytelling and I think these elements can be leveraged outside the Metroidvania genre.
      I think the lore and universe of Metroid could very well be used to create an RPG like Mass Effect (in term of expansiveness & storytelling). It would be a marvellous ground to expose Samus’ to more than silent protagonist pulp fiction trips and be a fertile ground to explore her character more in depth and give her character arcs. She’s got a lot of potential you know 🙂
      If I end up contributing to the Metroid franchise in the future feel free to reach out and tell me what you think about my work, good or bad 😉

    • @nmomose2865
      @nmomose2865 4 роки тому

      Philippe Futureboy I do agree with u to a certain extent. Metroid does have a rich universe with endless lore but last time Nintendo tried to change Metroid it was a complete disaster. Metroid Other M was to what I can tell very similar to what u want. More focus on story and combat. Think of how bad that game turned out, it was so bad that u can buy it know for like a dollar. The game is complete trash. I haven’t played mass effect and I don’t know much about it so I won’t disagree with that point. I don’t talk about games I haven’t played.

    • @philippefutureboy7348

      Very good point! Nintendo is definitely not the best game dev when it comes to expanding and getting out of beaten paths. They are great at honing their skills on very specific avenues but they tend to be very conservative otherwise.
      It’s not because Nintendo failed once that it bars Metroid from having potential in that area. Imagine, what would happen if CD Projekt Red took on the Metroid mantle? ✨✨✨✨

    • @nmomose2865
      @nmomose2865 4 роки тому

      Philippe Futureboy I’m not sure about that. As great as project red is, Nintendo games have a very special feel that is captured by all of their games. I would be scared that anyone other than Nintendo just wouldn’t handle Metroid properly. Project Red could definitely make a great Metroid game but would it even feel like a Metroid game? Unfortunately we will never get to see Projekt Red or anyone make a game out of Nintendo’s ips because We all know how selfish Nintendo as a company is when it comes to their ips

    I think it would actually be quite hard to remaster the Prime series on the Switch. The main problem is, that the best versions of Prime 1 & 2 are the ones on the Wii and the Switch doesn't really support the way the aiming (which is maybe the most important thing of those games) worked on those versions and Prime 3. I love the Prime Trilogy, it was my gateway into the series (because I failed so hard while playing Metroid II on the GameBoy as a kid), but the gameplay would have to be as smooth and excellent as it was in the Prime Trilogy on the Wii and I don't see that work with the pro controller or even those horrible joy-cons (pls don't be mad guys, I just really don't like those).

  • @StodgyAyatollah

    Metroid is also tied to nintendo. Many old fans of the series since the nes days likely do not buy their consoles anymore like myself. That plus the low sales mean they would have to completely rebuid the franchise and gain a new fan base just to warrant continuing it. For me metroid ended on a high note with super metroid and I'm happy with that.

I wasn't able to support Golden Sun in the past and now is dead, now I will support Metroid so I won't lose it too.

    I still think releasing Metroid Prime 4 on the Switch is not a good idea. It would do better as a launch title for a new console or as a title that appears 1 year into a new Nintendo console's life span like Metroid Prime during the Gamecube-era. They could release Metroid Prime trilogy for Switch and then do back-to-back releases alternating between Prime games and sidescroller games...so that half of all Metroid games are 2D sidescrollers and half are first person.

    I beat Metroid Prime without a guide my first and only time playing through it. I didn't find it too frustrating, myself. Hard, but not impossibly cryptic.

      With guides my philosophy is: if I've been looking around for too long and I'm no longer actually enjoying the search, then I'll look at one, but not to get the full answer. More of a "oh it's in the Phendrana Drifts huh? Okay, let's head there and figure it out." or "oh it's near this room somewhere." That way even if I use a guide, I still get to figure out a bit of it on my own. It's like getting a hint instead of the full answer.

    Personally, I find the entire Prime series to be terrible. The story is great from what I know of it from reading wikis and stuff, but I simply cannot get behind the 3d gameplay choices they went with. Prime 1 and 2 I have played, and basically gave up after a few hours because of how terrible I found the 3d experience. I skipped 3 because I simply couldn't ever find a reason to own a Wii due to loathing motion controls. I managed to actually beat Hunters, but as a whole that game was probably the worst control-wise to me because it was put on a system it really should never have been crammed into. On the other side, every 2d Metroid game has been a great hit with me. Grew up with Super and Fusion, formed a complex love/hate relationship with the original because... everything about it... and dove into Zero Mission and came out loving it.
    Samus Returns was probably the best and has a bonus of being the ONLY 3ds game where the 3d ever worked right for my eyes out of the ENTIRE 3ds game library that bothered with that "feature".
    Federation Force... I just pretend I'm Japanese for that one and act like it doesn't exist. It's better for my sanity that way.

    Metroid would definitely SELL A LOT BETTER outside of nintendo.
    Nintendo is great, sure, but the target consumers are not the ones more likely to buy Metroid. They are to comfortable with colorful, simple games....
    On the other hand, Sony and Xbox has a lot of public that like games like metroid (mature, storydriving, complex experiences). Metroid has more in common to franchises like Halo, Doom, God of War, Uncharted, Dead Space, Bioshock, Gears of War, etc., than the ones of nintendo (mario, zelda, kirby, earthbound, starfox, fire emblem, pokemon, etc).
    That's the reason why I think the Metroid franchise sell so poorly, despite being well-know , popular and important to the game industry.

    I feel like Metroid’s Main issue is that it’s a mature nintendo series. Most of the top selling Nintendo games have an appeal to Children. And Fire Emblem has Waifus, while a lot of stereotypical male gamers don’t like strong female heroes without claiming there’s “””an agenda”””. (Granted Samus was like, the first strong female video game hero so you can’t really call her pandering) But I agree, we need a Samus Returns or other remasters on the Switch. I love how the original and Super Metroid are on the Switch VC, but we need more.

Nintendo needs to port metroid Samus returns remastered to the Nintendo switch. Nintendo has taken chances on things that are far less profitable. Metred anything would sell really well right now. They are totally messing things up by taking too long on the trilogy.
    I think metred prime fusion is going to be the next 2D metroid that is rumored. Nintendo truly doesn't care what fans want because they constantly ignore our requests. Metroid Prime 3 was released on a console with a new audience, the Wii, barely an increase in sales happened. Why should the same happen on the Switch? You said it yourself, the Prime series started out strong and then dropped immediately after, indicating the audience probably did not like it much either (but were hopeful.) Having "Prime" in the title may be the new release's downfall.
    The reason why Nintendo liked Metroid initially was because it succeeded in Japan and North America. Ever since Super Metroid, this was no longer the case. Nintendo has been chasing the dream of creating a success in Japan but the Japanese never took the bait.
    This video said something that irked me: _"accessibility"._ Anybody who says they wanted to play Metroid but were afraid of the game being to hard are lying to you, they will never play Metroid games. This is like saying _"I would play Metroid but the game costs $60 and would prefer if it was free."_ Never listen to those people. Making games "accessible" just waters the experience down will turn more people off.
    Accessibility is a lie. There are many games that succeed due to their difficulty which is the path Metroid needs to take now. The most successful game in the series is the first game on the NES and Famicom, a game notorious for its difficulty. But no, we should make easy games for babies and charge full rate 'cuz we're idiots.

  • @nicoloenricorimoldi7425

    I disagree about making the games more accessible. Fusion and Zero Mission are already more accessible than Super because they were released on handhelds (although Fusion is a tough game), and Prime 3 is more guided than 1 and 2 because the Wii had more casual gamers.
    None of those games sold well.
    Not to mention the fact that some games nowadays are marketed on their high difficulty (Dark Souls, Cuphead et cetera) and they sell well. I don't see why Metroid couldn't do this as well.
    Heavy Marketing is the way to go. Also, more of the games should be available on Switch.
    And please, no Super Metroid remake. Nor Fusion, for that matter. They would only end up looking worse, and probably have some fanservicy BS like Samus Returns' final boss.
