This was a lot of fun. Hugh is a great guy and was gracious with his time. I got a good feeling about the future seeing how excited he was with what he's seeing from the Season 2 filming. Can't wait to see where the series goes from here. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for your breakdowns this season, and the incredible interview with Hugh. I borrowed Wool from the library, but quickly returned it and purchased the books about 10 years ago. Time for a re-read.
It's great to see the writer involved in the project and producing it to ensure quality control and stick to the source material. Season 2 should begin the rebellion and season 3 the revolution. I think this is a 3 season show.
I gotta admit, I was one of the many people who thought the world outside was really green and had long healed from whatever apocalypse had previously driven them underground. So that revelation partly caused me the shock of disappointment that the world wasn't a garden, and then I was further shocked at seeing all those other Silos -- multiple potential purgatories going on in parallel -- oh wow. It also made me think of Bernard's flashing red keychain fob. Was he being summoned or paged by some bigger boss living somewhere else? I also wondered how the hell Juliette was going to survive, or gain entry into another silo.
I don’t know how people complain that nothing happens in some episodes. I felt like something major was happening in each episode, like a big piece of the puzzle was being unraveled and the pacing was great. I was quite surprised that such a show exist where they move the plot along so quickly but in a thoughtful way, not rushed. Congrats on everyone that worked on this season and can’t wait to see the next one!
You'll have people complain about "filler" episodes in pretty much any show, and it's always because these people are literal morons who can't distinguish between filler and world building/plot movement.
Take the last episode as an example. Watch the first ten minutes and then fast forward to the last 15 mins for the final reveals. Everything else was just filler.
If it’s getting boring, then you might not be paying close attention. This is the type of show where you have to listen carefully and watch carefully! Everything will unravel eventually but each episode is essential to understand whats happening (and sometimes you’re not supposed to understand, they want you to have more questions) it’s the fun of it!
I read the books and so I kind of knew what to expect, what I was not expecting was to tear up twice for a TV series. Never happened to me before, kudos to the writing team and the acting.
I have been captivated by SILO. I found it to be refreshing, in its quality of production, writing, film adaptation, and uniqueness. Many post-apocalyptic series, some with the same conditions, rhyme too much. If everyone lived in pods and ate bug patties and drank grey water, and if armored patrols roamed the streets beating people for no reason, I wouldn’t have cared much. This wasn’t SILO’s case. You had bustling side streets with food vendors, stacked pretzels on sticks and people running about carrying freshly baked bread. Scrap collectors ran the stairs, people wore unique clothing and not one piece suits, vast farms of corn existed and people were buried in apple orchards. The mayor was introduced as well liked and you assume she’s in on some evil scheme but no, she’s a real public servant. The police force you see most of the time are in brown and beige almost 1980s police uniforms and there is a sheriff with a damn badge. The Silo isn’t a depressed band of survivors barely scratching by in an comically dystopian horror show, hiding in a hole in the earth, no it’s the remnant of a civilization forced underground, one which wanted its legacy to survive in some fashion. It wanted pancakes and bacon and eggs for breakfast, apple orchards, mayors, sheriffs. It isn’t a town of 10,000 forced underground, its a town underground. It has its secrets of course, but it’s uniqueness makes it so appealing to me.
I read this book so many years ago and I thought the world gave its back to it. I was so happy and euphoric when I saw that there was an actual show on Apple TV and I eat it all in one night! I’m dying for season 2 and silo 17

Me too🙋🏻♀️😂! It’s a mixed blessing, I tell ya, to have the source material at my fingertips for a show with such a well crafted sense of mystery and intrigue. But the reveals in the book are just as enjoyable. And I can’t wait to see how they play out on screen.
@@lizaronni I think what makes the show better is that it changes a few things like some of the characters (I don’t want to spoil anything for the ones who haven’t read the book yet) changes some events but it’s keeps it relevant without feeling like their changing too much and not following the book. I literally just finished reading Wool, so I bought the next book Shift and I’m already half way through it. It explains why exactly the Silo’s were built in the first place and what the secrets their trying to keep are. THANK YOU for this Pete!!! I discovered your channel because none of the normal podcasters I follow (to my dismay) were covering “Silo”, and not only your breakdowns have been great, but I literally wouldn’t have know the show was based on a trilogy of books if it weren’t for you. So to actually see an interview with the author is just icing on the cake and well deserved. CONGRATULATIONS and thank you again!!!!
I basically tell everyone that Apple TV is the most underwater among service- they consistently release quality content, even if I don’t like it i can tell they were paying attention and trying to release something amazing. Silo should be watched by everyone.
33:00 I really agree with the change of character with Bernard. In the book, he seemed to really rub it in Juliette's face and take pleasure to "Be right" and get rid of her. In the TV show, the last exchange in the prison cell is so nuanced and you feel he is simply a man with an unfathomable weight on his shoulders.
I LOVED this interview. When Books are adapted to on screen medium discerning viewers know that 1 to 1 adaptations are very hard to do and not practical for many reasons, a few brought up in this interview, Casting, availability of actors, set changes, etc. Along with that character development that happens when we read a characters thoughts and feelings is near impossible to put on screen without some sort of weird voice over. This sort of interview is what I want to see more often with Adaptations and I LOVE that the Author is part of the screen play writing and giving direction because the Author is the one who came up with the story to begin with and as Hugh said in this interview there are things he might have wanted to do in the books that he could not go back and change due to the way the short stories were released, etc. To me the changes made are perfectly fine as the spirit of the story has not changed at all. This adaptation is a shining example of how to do it - and shows just how bad the adaptation done to Wheel of Time was. Maybe Robert Jordan would have approved of what Rafe Judkins did to that show, but I seriously doubt it. Hopefully we get more interviews with Hugh detailing the WHY behind the changes for future seasons - getting a glimpse behind the curtain is amazing and in reality will shut up the toxic fans who decry any changes made from the books to the screen. I did find it comical that Hugh forgot everyone wore Overalls... ;-) I am halfway through a re-read of SHIFT and after hearing Hugh's comments I am excited to see how he changes and gives us a different way to see the contents of that book.

Apple TV coming out with the bangers, Hugh seems pretty cool, excited for more iterative processes with him and his team leading to some cool outcomes!
I have read the first two books. I really loved the TV show and the books. I liked the story changes because I wasn't sure where the story was going, so there was still a mystery for me. What was cool was the show may have diverged from the book but it didn't change the overall story. The first season did end where I expected. I am happy that the TV show will be breaking the first book into 2 seasons.
Once again, Thank You, Pete! Another great interview and I really like how it shows that Hugh Howey comes across as a pretty decent guy. We're so looking forward to S. 2 of Foundation starting in a few weeks seeing as how S. 2 of Silo and Severance will be a ways off. Here's hoping that the entertainment industry strikes get settled sooner than later with deals that work for everybody concerned. As always, your thoughtful and enlightening reviews of the really good TV programming over recent years are always appreciated by us and are a necessary bonus to getting more out of a given TV episode. We've been compulsive fans of your channel going back about maybe 5 years or more, not really sure when we first came across your channel, but we're very glad we did and it's hard to imagine not enjoying your thoughts and views about Silo, Foundation, The Expanse, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, HOD+GOT, Severance, RBW, Ozark, Fargo, and some others of course. Thanks again!
The Silo series is one of my favorite worlds. I read all the books and even continued with some fan fiction that Hugh graciously allowed others to set their books in. They have done a great job with the series and glad to see Hugh Howey is involved. I would absolutely read more books set in the silos.
Pete: thank you *so* much for asking about the controversial overalls/coveralls debate! Although maybe we are the only two that noticed it, especially since the author himself didn’t seem aware. 😊 When I wrote my book set in the Silo world - with Hugh’s permission, of course - I swear I changed that back and forth several times. Because I was sure it was coveralls, and then I checked and I saw overalls, and then I checked again and I saw coveralls. I’m so relieved to realize that it wasn’t me going crazy! In any case, thanks for this great video. Hugh is a true Mensch, and he has been so kind to his fans and fellow writers for years. This kind of success is not only well deserved but couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. That’s a cliché… 4:40 and I’m using it anyway, because it fits.
Nice interview! Very cool to see the author and here his thoughts. I still want to know more about the ‘mines’. I’ve not read the book and there have been tons of references to them without showing that aspect of the Silo. Hopefully they resolve that in the upcoming season…
Great interview, so glad to hear from Hugh. I haven't read the Silo trilogy yet, just watched the series and really enjoyed it, I'm really eager to read this series in the near future!
Great interview! 👍 It's good to see that your channel has gained enough traction to make this possible. I guess it also helped that there wasn't as much coverage of Silo elsewhere on YT, at least not of the consistent quality we've come to expect from you, Pete. 😉 So, kudos again. Looking forward to your coverage of Foundation S2 in about two weeks!
Really cool interview, and Pete is the perfect guy to speak to an author about the tv adaptation. I saw Pete's eyes light up when he spoke about major book deviations, lol.. I can't wait for season 2
Silo is the best show I have watched this year. This interview is wonderful, an insight from Hugh Howey. I have not read the books, I wish I could. TV shows have the time to develop characters, something that movies can't do. It does depend on how well the show writers can adapt, maybe expand upon their mindset. Bringing up Ukraine was interesting as that war from so far away in Australia keeps me awake as I try to go to sleep. Is there any possible way I could get out of my head and play devil's advocate for Prigozhin or Putin? I can do that for Sims, Billings and others.
@@flak8882I’m DEFINITELY going to pick up the books. One of my issues with the show was the lack of deeper world building, hopefully the books flesh out life inside the silo more, as books are far better at that than tv show.
Great finale. Very satisfying and leaves you wanting more. I have to say understanding the story before watching made everyone’s motivation understandable and grounded in reality rather than cookie cutter villains and heroes. I wish they’d released all 10 episodes at once. The first three episodes were great, a complete story arc within the bigger narrative. Then the show dragged and then got good at the end revealing answers to many questions. Those dragging g episodes in the middle contained important character development that I would’ve enjoyed had I not been longing for more plot reveal each episode. Overall, Silo is a great sci fi show. It’s a great universal story of drama and suspense all on its own. Not just in the sci fi genre but as a great written show overall
I am glad that the season was not released all at once. I did not find any episode boring or dragged. Sometimes binge watching a show is fun and sometimes a week is worth the wait as one has the time to ponder, speculate, think about the characters and where the story could be going. I enjoyed the slow burn with the pay offs.
@@Hochspitz saying the middle dragged was too harsh. I just like having all episodes so I can watch at my own pace. Like reading a book at your own pace. Andor is another masterpiece but watching it at my own pace would’ve made it more enjoyable and appreciate the slow burn elements even more.
@@buildamillionbridges6153 I'm also in the camp of allowing episodes to breathe on their own with room to digest and discuss. We frequently see calls for all at one releases but the overwhelming consensus is that single weekly episode releases are superior meanwhile,... all-at-once is *EXTREMELY* short-sighted
Great chat and great show! I totally agree----I think a lot of people have lost sight of 'earning' reveals. It means so much more when its earned; when you sit with the story longer and it marinates into your mind. When you get the perspective of characters and see their motivations and mistakes. Being fed revelations waters them down to meaningless, flavorless porridge. I love the week to week format for these kinds shows because the agony of the wait makes the reveal that much sweeter and nourishing. Season 2 cannot come fast enough!
I love to hear that they're changing it up, and the reasons behind it. That's such a refreshing (and correct, lol!) way to go. Great interview, great show, really looking forward to more.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show because it allowed us to create our own opinion about each character. You’ll think you’ve figured out a character and then they completely surprise you the next episode. Amazing writing and casting
Thank you Pete for covering this series! I came to this series late and binged it all but your analyses definitely helped me understand the episodes better. Really enjoyed this series and your videos are top notch as usual!
Hugh Howey is absolutely one of my favorite writer and that started with this story. I bought the omnibus after I read them individually. Sand is also incredible. His ability to build worlds, and so many different kinds, is absolutely amazing. His stories are brilliant, whether it’s a kindle single or a novel.
Great video Pete as always! Thank goodness you are on youtube making these breakdown and discussion videos. Whenever I start a show I hope I see the video posted from your channel!
Loved the show… I’m just finished with Shift… can’t wait for season 2. I love the sense of a long history already having taken place within the silo, it feels like an old place when we first learn about the current residents. I would have loved to consult on the medical aspects
I can't watch this video without recommending people to go download the first book, which is free on Amazon. It's truly an extraordinary story and exceptionally well written. Fast paced, dense prose.
the show is a great binge! I'm looking forward to season 2. Great interview! I appreciate how Hugh describes the different mediums of storytelling (film, books).
Watched only just now. I am so glad I did. The world building was so engrossing and the characters were so great. Love Tim Robbins as a sort of villain. “Did I hear you say you wanted to go out?”
This is quite surreal to listen to with headphones in bed. Just listening. Crazy well done and interesting take. Now it has clearly taken off to the imagination of many and could really be made 100x for each silo. Subtle choices can make new characters and kill the originals. I mean, you could do a show on, one of the guys just who know the screens exist and work in surveillance.. knowing they are hiding a lie -- but not knowing how far it goes. Until - Its just a brick wall. The Silos are just there for humanity to survive until X years in the future hopefully can return to the surface. bit by bit
Pete, I enjoy watching your videos. It started with foundation and then you finally convinced me to watch silo. I read the novel but was worried about being disappointed. Anyways, you remind me of alt shift x but with a personality and opinion. Enjoying watching and looking forward to S2. Thank you for making awesome content.
I have read and watched a lot of sci fi and a lot of it is formulaic so it is so refreshing to be surprised. I totally did not expect the ending of the season. I am reading the first book now.
The film makes me want to live in a silo - love the basic, retro style living quarters, everyone has a role to play, decisions are made for you. Reading '1984' there are some similarities. HH has inspired me to write.
Season 1 was excellent from start to finish. I've read the entire Silo Series (9 books total) multiple times, and I expected the Apple version to follow the details of the books (like Hunger Games followed the books). Not. After I set aside any and all "expectations" in watching the Apple version, I began to relax and just enjoy the ride. I quit comparing the books to the film. It's pointless and reduced my enjoyment with this new Apple version! I'm excited for S2. 😊 In a month or two I'll binge watch the episodes, and I'm certain I'll glean more tidbits that I missed on first viewing. A re-watch or two always renders more information. I'm on my 6th rewatch of The Expanse, for example, and it just dawned on me that it's Julie Mao who brought protomolecule to Eros, but it was Dresden and Jules-Pierre Mao who turned it into a debacle and destruction of everyone on Eros.
Very few authors ever get a chance to go back and rewrite (or flesh out) one of their published books and it’s receive well. The closest allegory would be maybe George Lucas changing “who shot first”, which is universally hated. This is a great series!
Read the book series a few years ago and really loved it. The TV series is also really well made and overlaps with how I imagined it when reading. Would love to see a Making of or Behind the scenes for the show.
Not super into reading or the writing scene, but I must say it is very cool seeing an author of the book not only being ok with deviating from the source material, but encouraging it to fit a different medium.
Thanks Pete for the peak inside of Hugh's thought process and a great interview. You got me hooked on The Expanse and now Silo. After The Expanse I started buying the books to read and now Wool is in my possession. I'm a "book are second" kind of guy I guess now. Thanks again
Finished watching the series yesterday, so glad it wasn’t made into a film, very interesting interview, didn’t read the books but I’m tempted to now I know that second series will differ from the book
I was really upset that David and Rasheeda died so early on but their story and presence lasted and kept me intrigued up until the point of finding out they actually died. The show is so damn good!
Something that I really liked was that those of us that read the books finally found out how the rabbit got into the farms lol, in the book we hear about it from the Dept side and now we see the other side of how it got there.
In a weird way, I honestly couldn’t imagine reading wool without seeing the show first. Helps you visualize the silo in a way the book doesn’t really describe. And no real spoilers because the show is only the first half of the book and the second half is SO MUCH better so you’ll really want to read it after seeing the first season of the show.
This was a lot of fun. Hugh is a great guy and was gracious with his time. I got a good feeling about the future seeing how excited he was with what he's seeing from the Season 2 filming. Can't wait to see where the series goes from here. Let me know what you think.

The 3rd book is a home run. So much better than the second.
Great interview I wasn't aware he had a channel
Yep, he did a video after each episode of Season 1 www.youtube.com/@Hugh_Howey
@@PetePeppers1 I also didn't know
Pete: thank you *so* much for asking about the controversial overalls/coveralls debate!
Such an amazing coverage of this trilogy! Ty.
Great interview, so glad to hear from Hugh. I haven't read the Silo trilogy yet, just watched the series and really enjoyed it, I'm really eager to read this series in the near future!
I watched all 10 episodes in one sitting. 8 hours straight. Now ordered the second book. Cant wait
"Let's at least do this every season". That's music to my ears 👍
Outstanding Conversation! Just like SILO: Everything I hoped it would be. Thanks Pete. Thanks Hugh.
This was just amazing to watch, the first video I've seen Pete personally and Hugh being completely open about being a writer, almost to a fault
Loved the books, and the way Hugh has allowed others to write stories in his _Silo_ universe. And I love the TV series equally.
I agree that in the books I pictured colored overalls which easily showed a person's job in the silo but Hugh is correct about what works on screen.
Thanks for interview with the author of the books 👍
Really cool interview, and Pete is the perfect guy to speak to an author about the tv adaptation. I saw Pete's eyes light up when he spoke about major book deviations, lol.. I can't wait for season 2
OMG Hugh Howey! WOW! I started reading the series before the first book was complete. Long-time fan of Hugh Howey.
There’s also ebooks you can ‘borrow’ acess to online. With free public libraries. They allow access with just a phone number.
The show has me wanting to read the books. That wind up into the "Boom rite in my kisser" of a finale was awesome.
The books are phenomenal, they really pull you into the world. Hugh is a genuine talent.
As much as I wanted more quickly, taking the time to appreciate and digest each episode really paid off. Made it more memorable for me.
I watched it all yesterday, i just couldn’t wait for the next episode !!
Just binged all of season 1 over the weekend and I never binge watch TV shows. I really enjoyed the show overall and I cant wait for season 2. 8/10
I thoroughly enjoyed the show because it allowed us to create our own opinion about each character. You’ll think you’ve figured out a character and then they completely surprise you the next episode. Amazing writing and casting
This was such a great interview. I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Thank you for making it ❤
No problem
Thank you Pete for covering this series! I came to this series late and binged it all but your analyses definitely helped me understand the episodes better. Really enjoyed this series and your videos are top notch as usual!
Fantastic interview. Looking forward to season 2 and beyond.
Thanks for this great interview!! First season was great and look forward to the next seasons
It is so refreshing to see someone famous to be grounded in the project and not just their self.
he's def right, i watched silo in 2 days and i'm right here as soon as i finished
Perfect female lead character without having to be a Mary sue
Great video Pete as always! Thank goodness you are on youtube making these breakdown and discussion videos. Whenever I start a show I hope I see the video posted from your channel!
Great interview. Nice to see the interaction. Great author.
Omg, Pete!! 🎉 This is awesome. 😮 I’m currently halfway through reading, “Shift.” I am trying to track down hardcovers of the series.
Fantastic interview. Thank you so much for doing this, Pete and Hugh!
Bernard is a hell of a character; he's large in stature, very much intelligent, menacing but unassuming...
You’re the best Pete. Thanks for the hard work!
I have been waiting for a decade since reading the books, and the show does not disappoint.
Loved the show… I’m just finished with Shift… can’t wait for season 2. I love the sense of a long history already having taken place within the silo, it feels like an old place when we first learn about the current residents. I would have loved to consult on the medical aspects
Loooooooove this series! This and foundation, just… Aw yeah
Still working my way though this, but damn this is great!
Silo is a fantastic story that is up there in the company of The Expanse. Definitely worth a second and third viewing.
Very good story writer…I love the show…can’t wait for season two
I have read and watched a lot of sci fi and a lot of it is formulaic so it is so refreshing to be surprised. I totally did not expect the ending of the season. I am reading the first book now.
Excellent interviews looking forward to next 3 seasons 😊
I'm on my 6th rewatch of The Expanse, for example, and it just dawned on me that it's Julie Mao who brought protomolecule to Eros, but it was Dresden and Jules-Pierre Mao who turned it into a debacle and destruction of everyone on Eros.
imagine being able to interview amazing authors like asimov after their series is adapted or something, this is historical.
Very few authors ever get a chance to go back and rewrite (or flesh out) one of their published books and it’s receive well. The closest allegory would be maybe George Lucas changing “who shot first”, which is universally hated. This is a great series!
Watched the first season week by week and was captivated by it! Really great sci-fi! Reading the first book these days: loving it!
I went and bought the books because of this interview. Haven’t decided if I’m going to read past S1 or not.
Thank you so much! Just great!
Great interview good job pete .... FUNNY to see your face 1st time putting face to namr great job
wow dude you have the main guy on. Fair play man!
Great interview. Thanks.
I think Apple is killing it with the scifi shows!
so excited for season 2
Such a great season, keen to ready the books cant wait that long ahahahah
Something that I really liked was that those of us that read the books finally found out how the rabbit got into the farms lol, in the book we hear about it from the Dept side and now we see the other side of how it got there.
Love this show. Can't wait for the next season!
That was a great interview I hope you get to do more!
Can't wait for Season 2; I've got all three books on Audible. Can't wait to get into them.
Great interview Pete
Neiss interview, Pete!
