Funniest scene was during the server room where Bernard screams at everyone to cover their eyes and turn around, as if they were children. Even Sims did it, which was hilarious.
I think the screen glitch was made by the film team to make the plot twist at the end more surprising. The whole time I thought Jules was gonna go outside, run over the hill and do gods no what in the green world. Only to have it taken away made it so surprising and a good visual plot twist
I 100% agree with this take. I'm not one of those people who really think too far ahead and predict things, I just take things as they are in the moment. So, when it was revealed that the greenery was fake and the camera view was actually real, I was pretty surprised.
I’m thinking maybe it was someone else who found it trying to change the screen. I mean, it looks like the screen is actually not a lie. But, it’s the helmet in the cleaning suit that is the lie and everyone sees the same video with the flock of birds flying by before they die.
I am loving the feeling of not knowing and needing to know. I really love when TV shows treat viewers as inteligent agents and do not over-explain or abuse innecesary exposition. This spiralesque world-building reminds me of Lost, Westworld or Raised By Wolves.... Where every episode revals more and more details, later expanded in further seasons and then adding more mysteries. That is exactly how I like my sci-fi. Plus commentaries on social dynamics, class, religion, history, politics, technology and engaging flawed characters that develop and grow (The Expanse is also very good at this).
you can sort of get an estimation of who lasts and who doesnt because IMDB tell you how many episodes each of the cast completes. rebecca ferguson completes all 20 episodes.
@@selbill3644 Raised by Wolves is dangling (it needs an ending) and Westworld is somehow unfinished. But I love their mythology and their themes and commentaries.
When her helmet display went off I was assuming that maybe she was out of broadcast range of her silo, so that’s why I think it went to the barrin waste land look
Quite possibly. By the time they get over the hill the outside air has invaded the suit and they’re pretty much dead. So no need for the signal to go past that point. It’s also how the first sherif knew where his wife was laying. He wouldn’t have been able to see her if the broadcast was on.
Somehow Jules has to return to SILO 18. That means that she either returns the way she exited or there are other entrances. I’m betting she finds her way into another SILO & crosses back into SILO 18 through the Down Deep.
11:41 Haven't read the books (yet), but my assumption was that at some point they had the "green" image playing on the screen as a default so that people wouldn't get so depressed by looking at the desolation outside, but then it just lead to people getting angry and wanting to go out.
I also think that the "green" image (that flashed briefly onto the cafeteria screen and is on the cleaning videos on the hard drive) is a FAKE mystery, a way to direct any remaining conspiracy-minded, anti-authoritarian residents of the silo to search for the answers to the question that IT wants them to ask - "why can't I go outside since it looks like a paradise?" It might be why Judicial is apparently seeding relics throughout the silo even after they are found and catalogued, to get citizens thinking that "outside = good". Citizens that start asking THAT question can be disposed of fairly easily using faulty tape since they will eventually get the courage to put their beliefs to the test and ask to go outside. This keeps any troublesome citizens from asking the REAL question - "why is everyone lying to us about everything and controlling everybody?"
I was thinking the same, I was like it must be the default state of that screen after the rewritten program with the depressed world was shut down with power and closed first. Who wants to see that land in the cafeteria? It's depressing for people, I thought the original point of that screen was to remind people inside the Silo, how the world looked like before and motivate them, to be a nice place for meeting, having lunch, coffee,... it also makes sense from the biophilia point of view, if you want to design a place for people you should consider this principle.
God, Silo is such a good show. Despite it being number two on apple tv’s most popular features, I feel like it hasn’t been given the attention it deserves. I haven’t read the books, so I sound foolish right now, but I have been inspired to read the books thanks to this amazing adaptation of a show. Congrats to the Apple TV team for deciding to adapt this wonderful book (I have started reading it, and its description is amazing) and show it to the world.
I think its worth pondering the fact that Bernard was very scared when the Hard drive was found - he said everyones at risk in the silo - take into account the multiple silo's also and it points to the real power being outside the silo and Bernanrd responds to it - the color on the keyfob changes color - could red mean imminent punishment ? cant wait for season 2!
There are mysteries and then there are mysteries. To be clear I know the answers to some of these questions from reading the book. To make this video I tried to put that aside and focus on what the show is trying to get us to think about based on what we see on our TV screen. I tried to do that in a way that wouldn’t push non-readers in any direction so that they can pursue the mysteries at their own pace. Let me know what you think. Answers for two of the questions I see the most from Hugh Howey: Where are the mines? twitter.com/kevrone/status/1676658650834673686 Why did the cafeteria screen glitch? twitter.com/realrustmdg/status/1676651173690867712
@@antoochibbo1355 - I feel like Bernard is being summoned or paged. So far he's been top dog in the Silo -- but fob key seems to be saying he's just one of many similar roles. He's just the guy from 18. So the world now gets bigger.
That's a fair approach. There have already been some deviations, perhaps for theatrical reasons. As they have Howey engaged, who knows what "tweaks" they decide to take.
@@antoochibbo1355 "being watched" seems to be a recurring theme in the series. It would be logical to think there's an upper level that constantly watches over Bernard and Sims, just like they do with the silo residents.
I'm just wondering if I'm the only one that notice Bernard ceremonial necklace he wears has silos and doors in between each of them and if you count them you can see it's about 18 of them on the necklace so the writers have been telling us this whole time from the first episode that there are doors linking the silos together which is cool
As a book series reader myself, I'm curious to see how S2 will (or will not) deviate from it. As far as I can remember, S1 was fairly faithful. I too think Sims and his wife have ulterior motives beyond just grabbing power. I also think we'll see more of Luke. Bernard could pardon him in order to use his talent to restore the hard disk and check out what else he doesn't know. I think it's also likely they'll come up with a different explanation from the book as to why the catastrophe happened and how and why the silo project was started, to make it more appealing to international audiences. Since the flashing fob key used to page Bernard by "someone" (or "something": why not an AI?) opens the server room, it's fair to think that's where he stays in contact with the entity supervising the whole project. It's also likely to be the most hi-tech place in the silo, up-do-date to the latest tech "from before" the rest of the silo aren't aware of. IMHO the series has done a great job in revealing gradually how the silo society is kept low-tech intentionally. It's fair to assume hi-tech was what caused the catastrophe that forced them into the silos in the first place, and the Founders want to prevent it from ever happening again at all costs. We'll possibly know more about what is put in the water to make them forget. IMHO it's extremely unlikely all the previous knowledge (even what stars are) is wiped away in a matter of a few centuries without "something". We know they've been there for at least 140 years, because that's when the rebellion happened, but they can't have been there for much longer than a few centuies. If they had, they would have already run out of spare parts for their machinery, without factories to make them, and the construction would be much more crumbling than it is. Or are they supplied from "somewhere else" every now and then, unknowingly to the general population? For example: how many helmets can they reasonably have? Shouldn't they have run out of helmets already, with dozens of people already sent out to clean? Speaking of which: Where are the bodies of previous cleaners? We always see only Holston and his wife. I can't think it's just a hole in the script and/or in the CGI. Where's Jane Carmody? Has "anyone" carried them away? Why is nobody in the silo questioning it? Still the oblivion drug?
@@clarkkent7973I think so too. In S2, it can cover Juliette's departure to Silo 17, what Juliette goes through inside, and what will happen in Silo 18 until Juliette returns. I think the topic that will be covered in Season 3 may be before the silos. Founders creating silos, a Founder regretting it, and so on. In my opinion, Silo Season 1 and Season 2 Shift Season 3 Powder Season 4
I was thrilled when I saw that the cliffhanger end to season 1 was only half way through book 1 so there is a lot more to come. For anyone interested the books are available as audio books on UA-cam.
This series was so good, along with your coverage and your interview with the author made me me get the book. It’s rare that a series is so good that I am moved to to read the books
My questions now is what is Bernard or the people who control him hiding? Why build and try to act like there is this huge, elaborate lie if the outside world is actually bad? There are so many plot twists. Lets go through some of the points: -Why go after the flame keepers and try to stop them from having the red level relics if the world is actually the way it is displayed on the cafeteria screen? -Why make such a big deal out of stopping them? -And if they don't believe the screen, why not let some of them go outside for themselves to see that the world is actually the way it is, let them clean, and let them come back? Rebellion problem solved. -The fact that the people who saw the Georgia book seem to know immediately what they are looking at and how beautful it is, even though they have never seen anything like it and have been born and raised in a silo is simply unrealistic. It tries to play in for the audience, but people who would actually only know life in a silo would know nothing else and would probably not even understand the ''beauty'' in those pictures; hell, they'll find their home, the silo, beautiful. But that obviously goes against the narrative. -The fact the cafeteria screen flashed the lush earth for a second when the generator was turned down was pretty misleading, since it lead to viewers believing that the outside world is beautiful. They really tried to milk drama there. Saying that the computer glitched and suddenly displayed the hologram video onto the cafeteria display rather than the camera video is possible but extremely unlikely and unrealistic. -The only reason here for the entire operation trying to keep the Flamekeepers at bay has to be that Bernard (or the people who have tasked him to) are hiding something really bad. Or simply the reason is to create completely unrealistic and unnecessary drama for a movie. -Why even make it such a big deal and go as far as to create a whole hologram of a believable outside world just to make people clean the camera? This is simply going to stir up more problems, which I thought they wanted to avoid? -So confused.
In my opinion these are all points where the series screwed up, because the points don't exist in the books or are portrayed differently. For example in the books there are many kids tales about blue oceans and green meadows. Seeing the cafeteria images, people speculate if these stories are actually true or just kids tales. This makes sense to me. Because if you know the outside world only as grey, what stops you from believing that grey actually is beautiful and green looks bad? In the books advanced devices are banned, but there is no relic hunt like in the books.
@@colinjacobs176 It's human nature to be curious. The Humans in the silo need the view of the outside and the occasional cleanings with the dead bodies to be reminded to stay inside. If too many people go out the economy in the silo could stop working
The only explanation to me is these people are supposed to stay in the silo forever even if it's inhabitable. My guess is they are forced into quarantine (Syndrome related?) as a "humane" eugenics program. If they come out, they will be killed which is what the mayor is protecting them from.
@@mrmarvel9309 SPOILER ALERT: In the books, it's one of those rules that they can only dig directly below their silo. Obviously to keep this very thing from happening.
I think the silo is bigger than shown as they have agricultural layers, there would have to be production layers and mining for the materials. That section of the silo can be bellow the water basin as the deeper we dig there is not just water. The water sits in a basin, section of the earth were wells can be built to draw it out. Maybe they're deeper than the oil basins.
One thing that hasn't been talked about much is the apparent silo ban on anything more powerful than a simple handheld magnifying glass as mentioned in the earlier episodes (when Allison tries to read the smallprint on the drive in Episode 1 and later in Episode 8 when Juliette's mother Hanna's magnification device is confiscated and destroyed). There is also the question what the Syndrome could be.
There is also a different reason, but I cannot talk about it yet. Since non-book readers, however, speculated a lot about the toxicity of the outside world or possibly the suits, and about the things happening in the airlock, I was curious what further theories they might come up with and whether for them there might be a connection here. Anyway, we shall see where the screen adaptation with its teased changes will take us.
@@berlindude75I have read the books but my theory is the silos are a quarantine and advanced technology (microscopes) might allow them to discover some people are infected.
the theory goes juliette's backpack is not the air supply. the outside air is fine. its the 'decontamination spray' before she goes out that was supposed to poison her.
@@RisingFlag100 - what? The tape being better means a perfect air seal inside the suit. So the poison from the spray can’t get in. Otherwise, what would be the point of a ‘decontamination spray’ BEFORE going outside to clean…..?
y’all please read the books someday, I promise you it’s worth the read!! Hugh Howey wrote a fantastic trilogy and I’m so happy the show was good. So excited for season 2!!!!
I’ll do that! It was the same when I read the book Altered Carbon, and coincidently there was an announcement that Netflix was going to release a series based on the book. I can tell you, that although it took 2 years to come to the screen after I’d read the book it was worth the wait.
Having read all three books, I can say that I loved the interpretation of the trilogy so far and really looking forward to seeing how the second book is presented :)
I think Sims and his wife are acting for the best of their son. Maybe the boy has the syndrome? A position of power and a sympathetic sheriff could go a long way to make sure it won't be a problem, or even to change the law entierly.
You know what would have been extra cool? If they panned out to that shot of all the Silos and one or two of them were actually caved in, having had collapsed over time. EDIT: Where are all the OTHER bodies of people who have cleaned? Holston and his wife can't be the only two!
i am pretty sure they forgot or vfx supervisor didnt read the second or third book. *minor spoilers few lines under. silos designed to be easily collapsible, each floor weight more then it supposed to, just to bring down floor under in case of controlled demolition, or something like that
"i am pretty sure they forgot or vfx supervisor didn't read the second or third book. " @GCoda - Some could feel that just saying that, in and of itself, is kind of a spoiler, unintended I'm sure, but for me in my mind's eye, it jumped out at me to be very aware of and look for as the series goes forth.
@@BillyJoeJimBob8 it is just a random detail with zero story implication, or it is so minor that i have trouble remembering where it is relevant. you probably can think of something interesting or relevant but author didnt, afaik
I think the door and water have something to do with the first rebellion. What if the rebellion wasn't just OUR silo? What if they were connected to another silo and cooperated, then things went sour for whatever reason, and it was silo vs silo, ending in the partial flooding of Silo 18 and the connection chamber being sealed off
Can not wait for S2!! I too had issues finding and seeing the bodies on the wide distant shot, originally thinking H & A was still alive, however when I watched your video and others, confirming they were dead, I had to go back a couple more times to zoom in and try to find the bodies - sure enough, they are there. But it's an easy miss without pinpointing the location.
Neither could I. Decided to read the books. It's funny to watch this video and see what speculation is wrong etc. Granted, a LOT was changed, so what comes next might also be changed from the book.
These are great videos. I joined your channel during the DARK days and you never fail to deliver. Unlike DARK, though, there are ways to look ahead. I can see some of the posters below, plus yourself, are a little frustrated to not be able to discuss things that lay ahead. Any thought of doing a Books Adjacent discussion of the show? Spoilers all the way down?
Then we must assume that all the silo's are under the same regime as silo 18. But maybe that is not the case and one of them might actually let Juliette in...
Yes. And maybe you have a silo that fell during a revolt and is aware of the IT deceit. Or there is a silo that is empty and somehow the door is left open and she can still close the door and go through decontamination. Plenty of solutions here. I think she will go into an adjacent silo and get back in 18 through the bottom and catch up with the Indian dude that was sent down in the mines
I haven’t read the books but in addition to all the theories circulating, I’m particular curious about the ammonite symbol surfacing throughout the series. The silo is shaped like one. It appears in the opening credits. And in the Hanna episod, when Gloria dreams of being in the outside world, the first thing you see is her holding a pearlescent ammonite shell. They were extinct during the dinosaur era - so there’s definitely some allusion to a type of apocalypse. Be interesting to find out if this is actually significant or if I’ve just made it up.
i think the significance is the spiral shape (staircase of the silo) and that those fossils are made up of smaller independent sections but part of a larger whole, like project 50 is all 50 silo's but silo 18 is just a small section of that overall plan. that's how i interpreted it though.
Great analysis and review! Thank you for not revealing any spoilers because you’ve already read all the books. I just binged-watched this show these last several days after finding out about it last week. Totally blown away by the whole thing! The only thing I didn’t like was the scene where Jules is in the trash shaft climbing down the ladder, and the Raiders are throwing debris down on her in an attempt to knock her off. She decides to let go of the ladder and fall down the shaft and lands on her back on a heap of scrap metal at the bottom of the shaft. Wouldn’t that usually kill somebody instantly? She survived that fall, and I thought that was a little bit of a stretch. Maybe I missed something, but I don’t think I did. At any rate, as you mentioned, season two can’t get here fast enough! This is a really great show and I’m glad I stumbled upon it. Will be watching your future reviews of season two’s episodes here on your channel when they come around.
As a reader of the books, one of the questions I have is why the show writers made the generator steam powered. It runs on petroleum in the books, which becomes important later. Also, the episode where they are repairing the generator, and have no way to turn off the steam, seems extremely unlikely considering the forward thinking that the builders of these silos have given each the systems. Not sure why the series writers would do that.
I like how they handled it. It was dramatic and presented her as very capable. I loved the first 3 episodes, tbh. What I don't remember well is if the time the generator was down was what allowed the hack (in s2 I guess) or if it was only to show the fake screen? It's been a lot of time since I read them, but I'd swear it had bigger repercusions.
Haven’t read the books, but also felt that didn’t make sense why there was no plan for maintenance, and seemed more like it was done to have the time pressure to keep viewers on edge.
I think the helmet screen changed because she was beyond the wireless range of the signal. The fact that there was a recording of a specific cleaning on a HD shows the signal is sent wirelessly
To me it looked like a hologram or augmented reality, not an LCD screen with a recording. In any case, where did they get the technology for it and how do they aford to lose such helmets with every cleaning for hundreds of years? They barely have enough cameras to monitor inside activity. How can they have so many tehnological advanced helmets? Also, how did she know that there will be a fake hologram before leaving the silo? She asked for the badge knowing she will place it on the sheriff and she went straight for the fake rock that was the dead sheriff.
Ah no, In the TV show I think it was clear that Bernard turned the Augmented Reality blue/green/birds off when he went to the server room (or whatever room it was)
Was the steam vent ever addressed? To have steam for 150 years you need water. My guess the water at the bottom of the silo is from a huge underground lake near by. My guess is they built some kind of steam maker deep under the ground. The deeper you go underground the hotter it gets
The steam vent was never explicitly addressed in the Silo book or TV show. However, there are a few possible explanations for its existence. One possibility is that the steam is coming from an underground lake. As you mentioned, the deeper you go underground, the hotter it gets. This means that there could be a lake of hot water deep underground, which would be able to generate steam. Another possibility is that the steam is coming from a geothermal plant. Geothermal plants use the heat from the Earth's core to generate steam, which can then be used to power turbines and generate electricity. It's possible that the founders of the Silo built a geothermal plant deep underground, which would provide them with a renewable source of energy. Finally, it's also possible that the steam is coming from some other source that has not yet been revealed. The Silo is a mysterious place, and there are still many things about it that we don't know. It's possible that the steam vent is just one of many secrets that the Silo holds.
Great video!! You're definitely one of my favorite channels, and I'm always learning something. I, too, have read the books and really like how you give reviews knowing the story. Have you ever thought about reviewing FROM? Given YELLOWJACKETS, I could only imagine how your take on FROM would be. Take care!!
As a reader of the book series myself a decade ago, I was thrilled to randomly find out that AppleTV+ was airing a TV series. I read the old info that Ridley Scott was going to produce a movie but that never happened. So it's great to finally have page put to screen. I have been very pleased with season one. As a reader of the books, I am actually happy that they are taking some creative liberties with some characters and plot. It adds a different perspective and some nice twists. I watched the interview with Hugh Howey and was very happy to hear that filming is already under way.
Good recap and questions. Looking forward to you pointing out the answers in your s02 videos. I should start rereading the books before these shows come out in the future because I was confused by the cafeteria monitor as well.
The census population within the city of Atlanta in 2020 was 499,127 people. Bernard mentions the population of 10,000 people in the Silo during the funeral for the previous Mayor. I'm wondering if the Silo "upper management" is maintained a very specific population count through the number of babies born versus deaths - as well as parenting and pregnancy allowances based on systematic monitoring.
Whats great about the finale is you realize the bad guys really aren't as bad as they were made out to be. The world really is trashed and they are trying to protect people.
I was thinking about exactly the same, was even going to post something about it. I love when bad (evil) characters end up having pretty good reasons for their actions and might even at some point pass along to the "good guys'" side. Sims (or even Bernard) might probably end up in this situation. I prefer those to a good character turning evil. :P
The greatest villains are nuanced and are neither good or bad but misguided and good guys are layered as well which blurs the boundaries of good and evil. So there is truth to what Bernard says that the outside world is toxic likely from radiation after nuclear war. But Bernard and the judicial approach to prevent another repeat of history is misguided by preventing free thinking, books, arts, religion, etc by banning artifacts and relics of the past like a Georgia travel book and hard drive of history. It will likely be similar to the show Snowpiercer where people want to get off the train version of silo but don't know if it's safe or not so they start a rebellion and ultimately split into two trains and those who want to stay can stay and those who believe in new Eden can leave.
Maybe not total evil, but fascist and discouraging in not only the fascists at top, but the people accepting such a stunted life. In that only weak people in the human race would love to hide in a big bunker not confront humanity's fears and problems - but stay in thrall to some freaky "we must control everything, watch everything" power-thirsty tyrants. Accepting a dismal life the tyrants rule with. In a pit in the ground.
@@jonfreeman9682 Fallout lasts only a month tops so you can rule that out. The reason why a nuclear war would be a disaster is that nobody survives that long without modern logistics network. And even if they do - good luck rebuilding everything you need to live before you're starving and murdering your neighbours for a mouldy piece of bread.
05:41 i think that display on helmer has a limitted battery . And julie survived more than anyone, that is why she could see when her display turned off
I think the children's book relic proved it was earth. Didn't it have Georgia in the title? One thing I wondered was why the canteen screen briefly flashed to the green view when the power went off early in the season.
Just to play devils advocate about it being on earth, if you where an extremely advanced alien species and had the ability to mess with humans memories, then how do you keep your specimens willing to stay in the laboratory while you study them over generations? There hasn’t been a blue sky in living memory right? That’s a bit strange. I still think we are on earth to be honest I’m sure those star constellations on the displays can be used to figure that out…although they are being put on the screen “directly?” from a camera feed. People don’t go out and clean on clear nights, always during the day. Yeah this show is a great puzzle box for sure.
Thinking about the others silos I got to a conclusion that I think it makes a resonable sense: In the other silos there wasn't a rebellion. Therefore, their belief system and their traditions are much different. It would be awesome to see that. I hope we can see this with Jules. I'm very excited for season two.
I think Bernard had the other silos shut down their view screens after Juliette walked over the hill. It would be very bad if Juliette was seen by other silos. Right now, it also appears the show is setting up Sim as Bernard's shadow which is different than the book.
Not having read the books I find it fascinating that there can be so many different theories about the other Silos. Some might have turned into tombs with the society inside collapsing. Some might have seen a successful rebellion. Can't wait for the next season !
Thanks Pete, great stuff, very nice to have it gathered together with answers form the AMA. One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that, to me, the surface crater rings seem too small to encompass the impression of the silo dimensions from inside, and thus some of the other rings we see are way too close! The other question I have is "where are the mines? Do they really exist?" They can't be under the silo, cos if they were, wouldn't George & Jules have come across them? I think if there is between-silo physical connections they would be Up Top, behind closed doors (easier to control) rather than way down below with no apparent control of access other than a feeble 'Do not enter' board, and some difficulty climbing.
My working theory is that the large door in the very bottom of the silo (which connects to a tunnel as we were shown on the harddrive silo schematics) will be central to something the third book will introduce and revolve around. So probably Season 4 in the screen adaption if the two later books (Shift and Dust) only get one season each.
As a reader of the books it so fun seeing folks who haven’t speculate. Some of is great (even if wrong), some is right, and some is laughable. Thanks everyone for the entertainment and no spoilers.
Good video, i used to think that the oxygen tanks on the suit might contain some sort of toxin but the whole heat tape thing has shot my theory down 😁 Soon be season 2 😃
Regarding the position of the 2 bodies in relation to the tree in Pete's excellent video: @ 2:05 to 2:18 - If one thinks of the tree as the center of a clock, both bodies are well below the 8 o'clock position, actually very close to the 7 o'clock position, which is much lower than the center of the tree if it's extended to the left. In the image @ 2:52 - Both bodies are much higher up the slope and in the wide shot @ 3:04, both bodies are waaaay higher up the slope at approx. the 10 o'clock position relative to the tree. The 3 different images don't make for a good theory of what's going on. So, the explanations so far don't make sense to me other than the CGI placements are off or not thought to be important, which is no big deal, although it would have been a lot more believable if the bodies had been more obvious, seeing as how the characters were so pivotal in the beginning and the last shots were a real season-ending cliffhanger. And, where are all the other bodies of previous cleaners? Must have been some others, huh?
Ok, but where are all the other people that were sent out to clean in the past, and what about all the people who were sent out to clean in all the other silos? There should be a pile of people at each silo exit.
The bodies do decompose. Not sure why the show didn't have more of them. I guess they underestimated how closely people would be looking at the details which seems like an unforced error.
@@PetePeppers1 - Agree. The remains, even if decomposed, would still be in the suits as I'm sure that they would not rapidly disappear. The suits still should have been there after only a year or two.
The great part was how he broke the hard drive and kept the actual disk. Lol he knows...and it plays on people's misunderstanding of how hard drives work. Great punch
SPOILER ALERT! Fun Fact: The key with the no.18 which Bernard carried was actually the no. of silo they were in (There are a total of 50 silos). And if you're wondering the world is actually unhabitable where they're currently in but far from there the land is habitable and in the cafeteria when they go to the backup power we see a slight glitch in the screen and we can see greenery outside, this is not a mistake; actually the creator of the silos programmed that because they wanted them to notice these because they want people to go outside to clean the camera.
I am guessing that the goal Sims and his wife were talking about was raising and protecting their child. Bernard made a point about how Sims chose his family over the Silo. But perhaps they are misdirecting us.
Sims needs to watch his back. He lured in one Trumbull by letting him think he was going to be Sims' shadow. Bernard might be doing the same with Sims. Someone like Knox might get considered, as he had shown a willingness to sacrifice someone for the greater good.
Nah Sims is fine. After the event with his kids. Bernard seems to understand and he tells him they will have to have a talk. Also having someone to hand over such a responsability must be rare. Like you need to be trained from young age and being fully dedicated. My bet is Bernard will spill the beans in season 2 to Sims as he reveals all the secrets for us to learn more. Knox is cool but untrustworthy from Bernard's pov. Knox did the right thing to tell on Juliette, even from Juliette's perspective. Not giving her up would have meant serious consequences for them down below
I thoroughly enjoy this show insightful. Considering that we only witness two bodies outside the silo, I am left pondering the fate of those individuals who ventured out before. The augmented reality sequence, my initial assumption was that the pre-recorded scene simply concluded as Juliet distanced herself from the silo, or perhaps the helmet's battery or some other internal component ceased functioning. These are mere conjectures, but I cannot help but consider the possibility that certain silos may house resources essential for future survival rather than human occupants.
The green meadow is project directly into the helmet of the hazmat suit as an augmented reality. The purpose is to make the wearer think that it's actually green outside, urging them to clean the sensors so the others inside can see it too. The glitch is simply a glitch. Like when you use one of those Snapchat filters.
I thought it was obvious what Camillie Sims meant in the conversation with her husband. Their one goal was their son. That sounded very much what a parent would say in a society with little freedom. And all her actions at the home when Jules was there was focused on keeping her son safe. I doubt this is a big mystery. I would bet that the majority of people without children imbued that with more meaning and the people with children more likely see that a maternal vs conspiratorial. Just my take.
I haven't read the books so take these theories with a grain of salt: 1) The Server Room is where the head of IT goes if there is an emergency and needs to contact other Silos. 2) There MUST be some backstory here. When, why, and how were they built. Possibly next season? 3) We will see Lucas again. He's gonna be in the "mines". Mines mean digging and I see Lucas digging right into a neighboring Silo. 4) Sims vs. Bernard. Sims saw the display and we have no idea how that will affect him next season. He also saw Bernard leave just after it became apparent that something was up during Juliet's cleaning (She knows). He will most likely become "curious" and begin to question things, forcing Bernard's hand to tell him the truth.
They were trying to kill Marnes but made a mistake. The author answers the question here in his recent AMA www.reddit.com/r/SiloSeries/comments/14otzcj/comment/jqeosp7/?context=3
I would love if you made a spoiler discussion about the first book only. Question Pete, what chapter would I need to start on if I wanted to grab the audio book to continue the story? (telling me to just start from the beginning doesn't count) Also, how far into the first book is the tv show so far? Do you have an audible code I can use that will benefit you?
my theory is that the dome structure above the silo, as seen in the blueprints, is the wi-fi coverage of their AR projection in the cleaners' helmets; and the Jane Cleaning video is the first time they'd tested the AR (we can hear her saying something like "omg, it's so beautiful, is anyone seeing this?"); and Juliette also says "the display is a lie", hinting at her helmet, and when she goes on top of the hill - the outer range of the AR projection, it scrambles to an unaltered view of the outside
*oh, and also, I think that's why Holston was trying so hard to remove his helmet (also coz he was dying, but because he felt Allison's when he tripped over her)
I think that that water is there from previous rebellions/wars. The big metal door underwater probably connects to other silos but was flooded some time in the past to block off communications/contact with neighboring silos.
05:05 may be is a lift elevator to take him to the underground tunnel to comunicate other silos, remember on chapter 2 when they discovered the Hard disc. There was blueprint and those showed a tunel under the most inferior level
I think the atmosphere is fine, she was poisoned by the mist that is sprayed before leaving the silo. It would make better sense to spray the area after the outside door closes after the person leaves the silo.if they feared contamination. Just a thought.
I'm thinking the silos were built knowing the world as they knew it was in peril. Either fallout from a nuclear war or the atmosphere changed. The silos were constructed much like noah's ark(s). The lush footage you see is a recording clip of just before the collapse with everybody safe inside the silos. I'm thinking Jules could either make it to another silo where they could spin off the interconnecting tunnel theory, or she could turn around and provide some proof or curiosity to her silo and get let back in. If there should be an exchange in characters, they could have her join another silo. Originally I questioned if the digger and generator progressed downward as the silo continued to expand, but I think with the tunnel, that's not the case. Was trying to figure why 144 floors. Is Bernard entering into the server room that's a hub connected to all the other silos? Great show, thanks Pete!
the last scene remembers me of the movie "The Divide" from 2011. there are a lot of similarities. but what i hate about the movie is the cliffhanger ending with no answers and no sequel. thats why i am so glad that we will have a season 2 of Silo.
Great video and thanks for clearing up those questions for us. Still so many remain unanswered and I can't wait for season 2. Do you think maybe that Sims and his wife want to take over cause they want to change things for those couples who were having a hard time getting pregnant, who were being lied to and tricked about the birth control? They both had issues getting pregnant with their son and the midwife lady who was drugged and threatened by Sims helped him and his wife with their son. He told her that he'll forever be grateful for the help she gave him and his wife with their son and that's the only reason he'll give her the good stuff instead of letting her rott in confinement with all her faculties in tact for the rest of her days. So maybe Sims and his wife are trying to make changes to insure that every couple will have a fair chance at starting a family without being lied to? Or maybe they are secretly flamekeepers and they'll have to play dirty for as long as it takes to get to the top so they can then take over? It could also just be that they're against institutional corruption cause they've seen way too much and they want for their son to have a better life, a better future and more choices. Everything is so controlled within the Silo and everyone needs permission for everything. It reminds me of East Germany back in the days. They kind of live like that within the Silo and I could see someone like Sims and his wife who've seen everything that goes on wanting to change that for the future of their son. Don't we all just want better lives for our children, protect them, keep them safe and we don't want them to experience any of the pain and sorrow that we've experienced in our lives? We'd move mountains for our children.
Re: the water at the bottom, Wilkins said he figured that out and that it was no big deal - could it just be that its shallow and you can simply walk in it? Bog door connecting Silos is my guess...
The fact Juliette hasn't died, did disprove one theory, that the oxygen tank contained a poison. But now we're left with two options, the air outside is poisonous, or the stuff that's sprayed on each cleaner as they exit, is the poison. I'm going to say it's the first one The fact there's no vegetation at all for miles to me suggests the air is toxic and even plant life won't grow in it. I think Bernard was shocked about the revelation there's a huge door under the silo, it seemed clear he didn't know about it Which explains why he's taken the platter out of the broken drive, his curiosity is now getting the better of him and I bet he's going to try and have the data restored, but to what end? I think it's clear there are still people higher up the food chain, above Bernard, who are overseeing what looks like a massive silo project, as I believe that pink key is a pager, it buzzes and flashes. There's one thing they didn't touch on again which surprised me and that was the camcorder Jules gave to....I forget her name, the lady with the anxiety, she connected it up, it turned on, but we never saw anymore. I was hoping it had video of the time before the silos and Jules would hook that up to the monitors and not the hard drive. I still don't understand why they went to all the trouble to hook the drive up to a terminal, just to display that video to the screens in the surveillance room, it all seemed rather pointless. Imagine instead if she'd hooked the camcorder up and it was that family playing on the beach we saw in the old ladies dream? The city scape in the background in the end apparently lines up with Atlanta Georgia, the skyscrapers match, so it's definitely earth. I think the magazine/tour guide book they found was based in Georgia too from memory.
I haven't read the books but I agree with everything you're saying. The air outside is toxic and I think they die because people before Jules got the trash Heat Tape from IT which was made to fail. I think the tape would fail minutes after they go out and it would create a breach inside the suit, letting the toxic air in. The steam they spray on them might not be something to worry about. Jules got sprayed too but the tape Walker gave her saved her life.

The mayor's chain represents the interconnected silos. I guess his key to silo 18 opens the tunnel door to the other silos. The shape of the key closely resembled the parts of the chain around his neck.
Found your stuff when you were covering SAUL, Pete. Keep up the good work. Really thoughtful commentary and analysis. Also, nice try to give us a red herring about the fact that this might not be Earth. Unless other planets have a Georgia, I’m guessing it’s likely to be Earth. ;). Great interview with Hugh Howey this weekend too!
the lights reflected in Bernard's glasses from the "server room" seem to indicate more of a long hallway. This leads me to believe that the "server room" may be a hallway to another silo where or some other place where Bernard's superiors are.
Something I was curious about--- during the mayor's speech, she commemorates the anniversary of the victory against the rebellion (if my memory serves correct) using 666. Six minutes, six seconds past 6 o'clock. Is this in the book and does it have any special meaning? I mean, I know what 666 means but I just thought it was odd and it caught my attention and made me wonder if there was any more to it.
Great show i love it. But one thing keeps bothering me and that is how they get air inside since from the wide shot at the end we can see many silo`s but none has air intakes , so they should all asphyxiate due to lack or air supply. Great video also.
Not necessarily. Submarines can generate oxygen via chemical processes to recycle the air. We don't know how many of the Silo's systems work, but they do seem quite self-contained so far.
Funniest scene was during the server room where Bernard screams at everyone to cover their eyes and turn around, as if they were children. Even Sims did it, which was hilarious.
That's right. Bernard was telling Sims you too don't look. That means nobody knows except Bernard so Bernard is top dog.
Funny thing is that Bernard’s order actually makes a kind of sense. He doesn’t want the crew to get the (false) idea that the outside is safe.
😂😂😂😂
That scene tells us a very good message: they don't want us to know the truth.
@Ziwapro You can't handle the truth. Oh hang on, that's a different movie.

I thought the same thing.
my theory is that Tim Robbins turned it off so she could see properly and deal with the immediate environment. Let's see!
Quite possibly. By the time they get over the hill the outside air has invaded the suit and they’re pretty much dead. So no need for the signal to go past that point. It’s also how the first sherif knew where his wife was laying. He wouldn’t have been able to see her if the broadcast was on.
@@ellalaird7162 yea that’s why he took his helmet off so he could see where she was

Greta theory
read the books they are great, but don't be surprised that the series has changed so much that it is almost not recognizable anymore :(
I also think that the "green" image (that flashed briefly onto the cafeteria screen and is on the cleaning videos on the hard drive) is a FAKE mystery, a way to direct any remaining conspiracy-minded, anti-authoritarian residents of the silo to search for the answers to the question that IT wants them to ask - "why can't I go outside since it looks like a paradise?" It might be why Judicial is apparently seeding relics throughout the silo even after they are found and catalogued, to get citizens thinking that "outside = good".
It's to get them to clean. The thinking is if they actually see how nice it is they will clean in hopes everyone else will see, it gives them hope.
God, Silo is such a good show. Despite it being number two on apple tv’s most popular features, I feel like it hasn’t been given the attention it deserves. I haven’t read the books, so I sound foolish right now, but I have been inspired to read the books thanks to this amazing adaptation of a show. Congrats to the Apple TV team for deciding to adapt this wonderful book (I have started reading it, and its description is amazing) and show it to the world.
apple tv always like to build a city. foundation is one of them. theres 2 more.
If season 2 follows the books like season 1 has, then get ready for "Shift", and Silo 1 ;)
Red could mean breach, as in someone got away
There are mysteries and then there are mysteries. To be clear I know the answers to some of these questions from reading the book. To make this video I tried to put that aside and focus on what the show is trying to get us to think about based on what we see on our TV screen. I tried to do that in a way that wouldn’t push non-readers in any direction so that they can pursue the mysteries at their own pace. Let me know what you think.

Why did Bernards key fob light up?
@@antoochibbo1355 - I feel like Bernard is being summoned or paged. So far he's been top dog in the Silo -- but fob key seems to be saying he's just one of many similar roles. He's just the guy from 18. So the world now gets bigger.
That's a fair approach. There have already been some deviations, perhaps for theatrical reasons. As they have Howey engaged, who knows what "tweaks" they decide to take.

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one that notice Bernard ceremonial necklace he wears has silos and doors in between each of them and if you count them you can see it's about 18 of them on the necklace so the writers have been telling us this whole time from the first episode
that there are doors linking the silos together which is cool
Interesting observation. But I'm pretty confident that there are more than 18 silos.
The camera panning out clearly shows more than 18 Silos. That necklace could be just for Silo 18.
I think there is a comunication system between the Silos, meaning bernard could be alerting the other silos of what happened
Um.. yeah, it's called Silo 1

Book 2 flashes back in time before the Silos were build. Personally, I hope the show only moves forward in time.
As for the bodies i think it was just a program made by the sile mate , they must have gone to the city we saw when jules crossed over in the end
In my opinion,
Silo Season 1 and Season 2
Shift Season 3
Powder Season 4
I was thrilled when I saw that the cliffhanger end to season 1 was only half way through book 1 so there is a lot more to come. For anyone interested the books are available as audio books on UA-cam.
This series was so good, along with your coverage and your interview with the author made me me get the book. It’s rare that a series is so good that I am moved to to read the books
Enjoy the books
Right now, the book and the show feel equally great like "Ready Player One" which was made into a movie.
Oh I hope you enjoy the books, I just reread the trilogy this summer and I’m so happy I did. It’s so freaking good, all of them
My questions now is what is Bernard or the people who control him hiding? Why build and try to act like there is this huge, elaborate lie if the outside world is actually bad? There are so many plot twists. Lets go through some of the points:
-Why go after the flame keepers and try to stop them from having the red level relics if the world is actually the way it is displayed on the cafeteria screen?
@@ByYaraEloff You need people to clean the sensor. The green landscape motivates them to do that
@@konrad3 Why do you need people to clean the sensor? What's so important about an unchanging view of the dead world?
@@colinjacobs176 It's human nature to be curious. The Humans in the silo need the view of the outside and the occasional cleanings with the dead bodies to be reminded to stay inside.
If too many people go out the economy in the silo could stop working
The only explanation to me is these people are supposed to stay in the silo forever even if it's inhabitable.
My guess is they are forced into quarantine (Syndrome related?) as a "humane" eugenics program. If they come out, they will be killed which is what the mayor is protecting them from.
Silo like the city of ember also starring Tim robbins have many similarities. Definitely worth a watch.
Another question is where are the "mines" when the bottom of the silo is filled with water and supposedly unknown to most people?
I suppose they'll have to explain that if Lukas actually goes there.
The other issue with the mines is how does it not cross over with other silos?
@@mrmarvel9309 SPOILER ALERT: In the books, it's one of those rules that they can only dig directly below their silo. Obviously to keep this very thing from happening.
I hope they re-release episode s01e10 with a fix for the bad CGI VFX. Scale/Proportion/Perspective/Position
I think once they can see the small things they will know how things work and can be built leading to technological development which they don't want
In the books it's a more generalized ban of sopisticated devices
@@captaindragnee5522 Exactly, the Overseers need to maintain their technological advantage.
There is also a different reason, but I cannot talk about it yet. Since non-book readers, however, speculated a lot about the toxicity of the outside world or possibly the suits, and about the things happening in the airlock, I was curious what further theories they might come up with and whether for them there might be a connection here.
I guessing that Bernhard will communicate with the other silo IT guys...and tell them to disable their outside camera and not let her in.
Biggest question of all is how does Common keep getting acting gigs?
Because just Wright movie did well I assume ❤
I thought he was good here
I haven’t read the books but in addition to all the theories circulating, I’m particular curious about the ammonite symbol surfacing throughout the series.
You speak so clearly and with catchable pace, thankyou for your efforts.
thank you Pete for what you do for our favourite shows, I started watching you during the last season of BCS and I still like your vids.
Very welcome
Your reviews are very enjoyable. Keep up the good work.
I think the helmet screen changed because she was beyond the wireless range of the signal.
The fact that there was a recording of a specific cleaning on a HD shows the signal is sent wirelessly
That makes sense!
Either that or it malfunctioned as it was glitching.
Ah no, In the TV show I think it was clear that Bernard turned the Augmented Reality blue/green/birds off when he went to the server room (or whatever room it was)
Having said that, Hugh said in a reddit that it was probably the range of the bluetooth/wifi... it never needed to broadcast outside the bowl.
Thanks for this
Was the steam vent ever addressed?
I think Bernard is in contact with the other silos in his little room.
It's because they want people like Allison to go out and see it for themselves and clean the screen.
@@Nyxlore69 but they know cleaning the screen don't show the green display, they have seen other cleaners do that before
Nice review for what is the best sci fi since the expanse
I knew the projection was fake when the hdd disk video had the same birds flying that was shown earlier. Kinda spoiled it earlier on for me
Thinking about the others silos I got to a conclusion that I think it makes a resonable sense: In the other silos there wasn't a rebellion.

Thanks Pete! I really enjoyed your interview with Hugh Howey as well 😘👌
Not having read the books I find it fascinating that there can be so many different theories about the other Silos. Some might have turned into tombs with the society inside collapsing. Some might have seen a successful rebellion. Can't wait for the next season !
You sure you haven’t read the books? 😉
Correct! 🤯🤯😎😎👍👍
@@Hogtown1986 if im not mistaken shes gona end up in a one survivor Silo next season🤯🤣
As usual fantastic video. Im enjoying this show a lot.
Looks like Chicago skyline, so the Silos are in a dry bed Lake Michigan
You have a good eye. 👍
I think the room which key 18 opened was all the other silo's outside monitors. He wanted to see if she went next door?
Such a well done show.
My working theory is that the large door in the very bottom of the silo (which connects to a tunnel as we were shown on the harddrive silo schematics) will be central to something the third book will introduce and revolve around. So probably Season 4 in the screen adaption if the two later books (Shift and Dust) only get one season each.
Makes sense, considering the changes to the silo's power source.
I think it connects the other silos
I think each book gets 2 seasons
As a reader of the books it so fun seeing folks who haven’t speculate. Some of is great (even if wrong), some is right, and some is laughable. Thanks everyone for the entertainment and no spoilers.
Good video, i used to think that the oxygen tanks on the suit might contain some sort of toxin but the whole heat tape thing has shot my theory down 😁 Soon be season 2 😃
Same
yes same
Regarding the position of the 2 bodies in relation to the tree in Pete's excellent video:
@ 2:05 to 2:18 - If one thinks of the tree as the center of a clock, both bodies are well below the 8 o'clock position, actually very close to the 7 o'clock position, which is much lower than the center of the tree if it's extended to the left.
Exactly what I was thinking!
The bodies do decompose. Not sure why the show didn't have more of them. I guess they underestimated how closely people would be looking at the details which seems like an unforced error.
Maybe other silos formed other power structures and they get rid of people a different way instead of sending people out
@@PetePeppers1 - Agree. The remains, even if decomposed, would still be in the suits as I'm sure that they would not rapidly disappear. The suits still should have been there after only a year or two.
@@PetePeppers1I’ve been responding to others that it appears to just be poor art direction to the SFX teams. Glad to hear Hugh thinks the same thing.
That was excellent
This is awesome! I can't wait!!!!
When Jules got out, she should of walked past every silo’s camera and cleaned their lens… then just walk off 😂
That’s stupid and she doesn’t have enough air in her suit for that
That's alot of walking. What exactly does that accomplish.
Nah!.. She should have wrpped the cloth over the camera..That would have done it!😂
@@Darknesssleeps Joke 🤦🏻♂️
@@chrisstephens3196 it was a horrible joke. That’s my point. Not even remotely funny or sensible
I like the differences from the book. It adds mystery to the flow of the story.
It's kind of hopeless and dark, the world is really dead and the silos are keeping humanity alive. Maybe there is a bigger twist .
Damn... I was hoping they didn't die. TY for the further search.
Bernard opened the entrance to severance
I thought it was obvious what Camillie Sims meant in the conversation with her husband. Their one goal was their son. That sounded very much what a parent would say in a society with little freedom. And all her actions at the home when Jules was there was focused on keeping her son safe. I doubt this is a big mystery. I would bet that the majority of people without children imbued that with more meaning and the people with children more likely see that a maternal vs conspiratorial.
Just my take.
I haven't read the books so take these theories with a grain of salt:
1) The Server Room is where the head of IT goes if there is an emergency and needs to contact other Silos.
Why were the mayor and deputy poisoned?

I would love if you made a spoiler discussion about the first book only.
Question Pete, what chapter would I need to start on if I wanted to grab the audio book to continue the story? (telling me to just start from the beginning doesn't count)
Also, how far into the first book is the tv show so far?
Its no accident that Tim Robbins is so good at playing a prick. 😅
They could just be a power couple working on getting ahead. There is nothing to say there is some big plan or injustice they are working on.
@@56redgreen Jay Z & Beyoncé Silo Edition.
You might be right, but I got the feeling they're going for something bigger and more meaningful to them?
Re: the water at the bottom, Wilkins said he figured that out and that it was no big deal - could it just be that its shallow and you can simply walk in it? Bog door connecting Silos is my guess...
The fact Juliette hasn't died, did disprove one theory, that the oxygen tank contained a poison.
But now we're left with two options, the air outside is poisonous, or the stuff that's sprayed on each cleaner as they exit, is the poison.
I'm going to say it's the first one
The fact there's no vegetation at all for miles to me suggests the air is toxic and even plant life won't grow in it.
I think Bernard was shocked about the revelation there's a huge door under the silo, it seemed clear he didn't know about it
Which explains why he's taken the platter out of the broken drive, his curiosity is now getting the better of him and I bet he's going to try and have the data restored, but to what end?

We don't know how many of the Silo's systems work, but they do seem quite self-contained so far.
dont they have loads of trees on one level ?
When I saw the city in the distance it reminded me of Caprica from Battlestar Galactica.
