- A how to tutorial for salt preservation taxidermy. In this video I am preserving parts from a barred owl obtained through roadkill.
(Sorry for the noise, I had a box fan going to run off flies )
DISCLAIMER: I am a registered Native American, I am the only person LEGALLY allowed to handle an owl/ other birds of prey, if you are not native you can keep almost any other bird just be sure to research what birds are legal for you to own, this will get you some serious jail time!!!
Fellow Native American here! can I ask what you're using the feathers and other body parts for? and if you sell them or anything? im looking for ethically sourced prayer feathers so I wanted to ask around; thanks!
@@rockdove. hey thanks for reaching out! My tribe regards owls as a bit of a omen so he is more of a display piece, but I use wings in making medicine fans and there tails for fans, medicine feathers are typically from eagles which is very hard to come by but the best bet is for you to look around your tribal community for crafts men they should help you out
@@rockdove. if you go to my tumble page “Mushroommemoirs “ I have another tutorial in which I’m turning a hawk into a medicine fan so you can see what the finished product typically looks like
@rockdove. I save things off roads and such if ud like some I'd happily help u out
"Poking around in a dead thing's cooch" I'm fucking hollering 🤣
Love your sense of humor, and the preservation info! Ty
Yes to anyone who asks, backyard taxidermy of owls, raptors etc, you can get permits or have salvage status especially with roadkill.
(OH damn I actually wrote that without seeing your pinned message! And thank you again Yes everyone please do the research on laws. )
The spirit of this beautiful creature deserved better. Her "humor", as you say, is incredibly disrespectful.
I have a wet specimen of a raccoon paw. I wanted to find a way to dry it out to just keep it as a little “lucky foot” kind of thing. This tutorial is pretty helpful and I hope the paw turns out beautifully. Thank you!!
Just what I needed to know and you're so funny! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I hate videos that are always super strict and professional which I’m the exact opposite of , so I always goof off
Thank You , Great two vid's on the owl. I just found one on road, killed by vehicle. Argg. Such a beautiful animal. Anyway, another great container suggestion for the body, is those large salad containers, that are practically the size of a shoe box. Given the specimen isnt too large, will further keep the owl in container when ready to salt, may move to larger one for the actual wing. I was able to duct tape it , reclosing securely, to stick in the freezer. That should keep the smell down, as I do not have a dedicated fridge yet. And I happen to have plenty of salt around in the garage. cool. Thanks again for the simplicity to this. Great video! ;)
this was SUPER helpful! THANK YOU! I was wondering how to do this to a galah I found near my driveway. He/she hadn’t been hit on the head or body, but on the bottom. I made sure it was dead before going to handle it. I was just preserving its feet and wings so I bury the rest of him.
But thank you so much again for this amazing video! It’s so helpful to learn and know things for the future.
Keep up the good work !
Lol luv how you explain it all, fkn awesome
Love your information thanks I think that is a great horned owl or a barred....i just grabbed one from the road and want to put a nice stone in its clutches!
It kinda looks like a barred owl, I can’t see the “ears” or “horns” but maybe it’s bc it’s so damages from being hit by the car 😢
“Salt doesn’t fucking matter what kind”😂😂 hit a like for that
I recently found these videos and love them! They are not recent but I do hope to see more posted in the future!
As ex-military I can fully appreciate the F-bombs, lol. As an animal lover I hate to see roadkill wasted and fully appreciate the beautiful/gross process of preserving what can be used from all animals, from hides to feet, feathers to bone.
I have to say,, my pigeon, sparrow and chicken feet are nowhere near as impressive as those owl talons :)
Nice vid, how long do you keep the claw in the salt for? I also kept a bit of the fuzzy “ankle” hopefully that doesn’t affect the process
Nope it will be just fine with some fuzz, leave it in the salt for atleast a month, it’s fine to leave it for longer , and I also suggest mixing some dried herbs in the salt to add a nice smell, pay attention to the salt and if it’s starting to clump you replace it with fresh
@@taxidermypunk4685 thanks for tip about the herbs , I think I’ll add some lavender. I first watched your vid on mute in a dinner after acquiring my claw. I then came home and had my girlfriend watch it with the volume all the way up and the narration is the best part of the vid , absolutely golden! Thanks for the quick reply , happy taxing..
@@cort-egsk8975 thank you I hope everything goes well for you
I’m using the exact same animal so this helps a bunch
Glad I could help 👍

I got a salt water bird wing and foot a couple of days ago. Tern I think. I put them in cornmeal (found that process online) but the wing is starting to smell now. I figured because it was washed on by water and was salty it would have a good start. Can I Use road salt on the foot and wing?
you saved me with these
I live in Hawaii you have inspired me to learn more about being taxidermist. Found out here where I live the owl is considered an invasive species. So fuckin sad.
I just found one in the road. Perfect condition. Doing this tomorrow
Hi there,
First timer here.
Your videos are super helpful!
I had to do mine in a bit of a rush..
I did the legs and wings of a raven, but with the legs I also did the drumsticks.. while it would be ideal to have the talons and legs will it work out without a smell?
I'm on day 4 of them covered in salt container...And yes there was some 'meat chunks' I was super rushed >,
I’d try to remove a few of those meat chunks, I’d hate for it to mess up and you loose the legs! The meat dosent really cute properly of there’s to much of it
Okay watched both your videos but how long do you need to keep in the salt before taking out??? And I’m guessing it depends on size and type of bird too
The best bet is a month or more, it’s impossible to leave it for to long! For big birds I say three months small ones I say just a month
Could you please tell me how long should they be left in the salt, wings and feet?
To a month and up! Basically wait untill everything is stiff completely there should be no give in any joints
I used borax to preserve some ravens tallons I found fresh in the woods, but they still carry that distinct rot smell after a round of both borax and baking soda. Anyone have tips?
Sadly I think you might have to either throw them away or let it rot to bone, if there’s a small then it didn’t cure correctly and is already to far gone, I’m sorry you have to hear this, but like I said the bones are still good so if you can just keep those
Thanks for this! Hilarious too. I'm curious if I were to hypothetically have an owl head in my freezer and I wanted to preserve the skull, how I would best do that. Like if I would be best off burying it for a few months and then it would be easier to clean out when I dug it up? I've used that technique before on a deer skull that had a little meat on it still, and it worked.
How long do you leave it for?
I have an owl and I cut the feet off at the first joint but I want to keep the feathers on the feet. Could I do this same process and just leave the feet feathery?
So sorry for late reply but yes!
I recently found two wings - one wing still only just has the feet still attached. the ants were in it and seemed to have stripped it back well. Do i still need to do freezer time and salt ? I heard ants are almost a natural taxidermist if you don't leave with them too long?
Does it make a difference how long the legs you leave on? Id rather have some leg with the foot
Hi, I found a beautifully intact bluejay this evening and would love to preserve it . Looking for best method for possibly the whole bird to just wings . How
Long should I freeze the bird before working w it ? 3 days - it’s preserves or completely ? Not sure if I wanna jar preserve the whole bird or just wing art ? I have the bird in a plastic container w a lid and May wrap it in a plastic bag. Only freezer I have is my daily freezer , is it ok to Put it there ?
I’d freeze the bird for at least 72 hours, make sure to thaw him out completely before using him, and yes it’s ok to keep in your regular freezer jist wrap him up real good and keep him away from any food/ other things inside your freezer
How mobile are the feet after drying? Do they need to be in their preferred position before going in the salt?
Not mobile at all they should be fixed in place like a statue, yes pose before drying I know that most people use a tinfoil ball and tighten the nails into the tin
Do you keep the salt containers inside or outside?
Jeje love this video actualy done it myself with a hawk
Nice! I’d love more birds of prey there very beautiful
I live in Hawaii and salt is abundant on the beaches atop the lava rocks. Can I use that salt?
I’m honestly not sure but wouldn’t hurt to try
Would this method work on an emu foot?
Gosh that’s a big foot, I would say yes, but what I suggest besides burying in salt is to fill a bag with salt and tie it around the top where it was cut, make sure your keeping an eye on the salt and changing it when it gets chunky
I’ve been searching out how to preserve bird wings and came upon this video. I’d like to preserve my coturnix quail wings. If I follow this simple process and check the wings for no joint movement after a month may I then use them in projects? Can this curing process be done in the house or does it get stinky? How long will the wings last after being cured? Thank you for your time!
Yes you can use if they are stiff, If everything is done correctly they won’t stink at all I did mine in the house. Depending on size it can vary but I think two/ three months is long enough
@@taxidermypunk4685 Thank you! ☺️
You know for a native American you really don't have much respect for these beautiful creatures😢
Hey, i just got some chicken legs from farming class, but my teacher broke them off at the knee joint. Do you think i could dry them like that or should i cut them shorter?
Also, some people have said that borax is better than salt for preservation. Is that true?
As long as there isn’t any feathers or large amounts of meat/flesh attached you should be just fine, and I myself haven’t used borax so I really can’t say
@@taxidermypunk4685 okay, thank you so much for replying so quickly! I’m really excited to start!! Eeeeee i’m so happy!!

@@taxidermypunk4685 okay :)
Question please: I'm reading other articles and they then cover in water? Do you recommend that? You simply covered in salt ...can I do what you did, leave it dry for how long? 2 wks ?...thank you for your kind reply ❤
I have never tried that and it doesn’t sound like a good idea water will make it rot
Makes total sense, thank you for your friggen amazingly fast reply...❤🎉💯🌞
@@jilllovato no problem let me know how it goes
Is it nessecary to freeze the bird first or can you do this without freezing?
I personally suggested freezing only because birds tend to carry lots of bugs, bugs can mess up the drying process to the point of no return so I definitely suggest the freezing
Where do you store the containers while they're curing ?
So you want a cool dry place that is NOT outside, ontop of a cabinet, a book shelf, or any other high place where it won’t be disturbed
Im making Hawk talons replicas made of buffalo horn , they looks so real , can I get problems with that ?
No , only if it’s actual remains, now that being said you miiight get heat but if your able to prove that there not actually hawk remains you’ll be fine, dont worry
Also that sounds amazing, if you check my profile I have some ways to contact me listed if you’d be willing to share a photo
@@taxidermypunk4685 I'm making replicas cuz I think it's a good alternative , I'm Mexican and I love to much native American people and the culture ❤️✌️
Can you re-use the salt after for other specimens or is it trash?
It depends cause the salt would chunk up as it removes moisture but if it’s still loose and dry you can
Excited I found your channel! I love the egg carton mold. I've preserved a lot of chicken feet and have always used string.such a pain in the ass. Will be using the egg cartons from now on. Blessed Be *
moonbeam hell yes im glad i could help!!!
I noticed the blessed be, thought maybe you were a witchy sister, I just found an owl I’m working on, how long do I leave the feet in the salt??
@@JessiMoonSix so sorry I didn’t see this but you leave it for up to two months or untill it’s completely dried, and yes but I’m a witchy brother 😉
Agreed!! Thanks so much for the egg carton idea, wow. I also do chicken feet at the moment. I have some that have extra toes and claws .
How long do you keep the feet and wings in the salt
Upwards of two months or longer, change salt if it starts to appear chunky cause it’s draining the moisture
what about if the talons are closed and its been two years how do i re open them?
You can maybe try and rehydrate them, but I’m not to sure how to do it
Hey so I found this video I think can help you! ua-cam.com/video/RO62CCTqoVA/v-deo.htmlsi=2OKSP6jyzWBTRnpe
Stumbled across you today and you are awesome! Can you reuse the salt or does it have to be fresh for every cure?
Sometimes you can get away with it but it’s best to replace, as the salt draws out moisture it’s starts to stick together and chunk up and you really can’t ‘dry’ the salt back out
@taxidermypunk4685 thanks for the reply and answer!! I'll be watching to see what other cool shit you make!
Three months ago I found a dead seabird and took a foot and wing. I used salt and cornmeal. They are completely dried now but there is a smell like rotten teeth still coming off them. I put them in borax for a few weeks and it is still there. Any suggestions?
Sadly it sounds old rot has settled in, it would be best to bury them and wait to collect the bones
@@taxidermypunk4685 Thanks for replying. I put the other foot in the compost to see how well that worked and I had a look and the foot is all in pieces, Loose bones. Oh well. Disheartening. I guess the bird had been too long dead in the water and then on the beach.
How long did it take to completely cure?
I honestly had for got about them so they sat for a few months, but normal a month, month and a half
I love the smell of wild animals they don’t smell like shit or nothing I don’t know once you start cutting them up or playing with the rotting body That’s about the only time they would smell like blood or internal organs would have a bad smell once you cut them up but Love the program keep it going opinions are like assholes everybody’s got one I think
The feet have been in salt for 3 weeks now, they don’t smell like flesh anymore, like how they smelt before i put them in, but they smell.... dried? Some sort of plastic/salt/chlorine or burnt smell? Is this normal or should they be completely smell-free? Like, when they’re done.
For some reason it smells exactly like pool water with chlorine lol
They will have a scent to them at first just put them in a well ventilated area when there done, I’d leave them for maybe two more weeks just to be sure!
@@taxidermypunk4685 okay, thanks!
How long do you have to leave them in the salt ?
Would like to know this as well....
Please let me know how long you kept them , mine are in it's been 2 weeks

I’m doing pheasant feet atm and just filled a pie tray with salt and water with the feet in them I’ll leave them for like 2 or 3 weeks I’m gonna make a key chain with them
Paused the video to go poke some holes in the lid and did the same thing 😂 at least it wasn’t just me
it's the fuckins that make me trust you
correction...it's the I'm not poking around a dead owls cooch that makes me trust this vid
Birds are fucking badass.
Cool video! Could you use this same salt process to dry out small animals? Like lizards or baby mice? Or would the insides be funky?
I actually can’t give you an answer because I haven’t attempted mummification with small animals, maybe if you gut them first and make sure the salt is inside them aswell? If you figure it out I’d appreciate it if you told me
Great video. How long do you leave it in the salt for? also, the whole time I kept thinking, "How does somebody eat that many M&M's?!?! thats sooooo many M&M's!!!"
So I suggest leaving it for a few months, the key to taxidermy is to leave stuff soaking /drying and forget about it lol 😂
Can I use epsom salt to preserve?
I accidentally hit a rabbit last night.
Tho I stopped and put him out of his misery, I still could not just leave him to rot. (As Thain Gypsi we belive that an animals purpose is to serve man by field, by plate, or any other means, so to kill an animal without purpose traps there soul on earth where they spend eternity searching for peace.) I felt so guilty knowing he died so painfuly and with out purpose that I took him home and gave him to my veggie and wild game fed pitbull. But I kept his feet so I would always remember that I gave his death purpose, that I gave him peace.
Lady Rose Clayton hi! Im so sorry you hit a bunny but im very happy your choosing to honor him and preserve a part of him. No epsom salt cant be used because of its properties it must be IODIZED salt if you want a piece that wont smell and will look great for years to come
@@taxidermypunk4685 Thank you for getting back to me so soon your awesome! But this means I will have to make a run to the store for some iodized salt and retrieve his little feet from the jar of epsom salt, So that I can do this the right way! LoL. But thank you again and have a blessed day.
i'll try this with some pheasant feet
Do you reuse old salt ?

How long in the salt: up to two months, this is a long process
Freezer time: put the fresh , bagged specimens into a freezer and leave it for two days to kill any parasites, birds can be dirty!
What kind of salt?: plain table salt , iodized salt
Thawing: after he’s been in the freezer take him out and put him in the fridge for a few hours untill he’s soft and completely moveable

I didn’t word it right but yeah carnivores are kinda musty but all birds have like an outdoors smell ??? Idk how to really describe it
Thats a barred owl
Yep sure is
Found him on the road
this it very informative, but also illegal in the United states and Canada (which is where I'm assuming is where your from due to your accent) due to the Migratory bird act of 1918 making it illegal to own even a feather of a bird of prey like an Eagle, Hawk, Owl, or Vulture without a permit. And selling something like this could land you a year of jail time.
