When I pull it turns the image sideways and I can't pull the next item/layer

Tony I know you said the roll was too tight, but do you have any control over the retraction settings? Also printing too hot will leave strings as well. I don't own a Makerbot so I don't know how much you can change on that slicer, but on an open source printer you can tweak those settings to fix that issue.
Also taking a heating gun with a quick blast left to right probably would have eliminated most of the stings that would of been easily cleaned up w/ a sharp knife afterwards.
I Will print one of these for my desk and post results as a Make on your thingiverse page!

Thanks man. The more I thought about it... it was probably the temp. I think my default settings crept up too high while working with Carbon filament. I think my temp should be down around 200... I think I had it at 230, which is probably the reason for the gooeyness. Thanks again. I'll check it out.... TD

So it ended up being 2 things. #1 it was the angle of the tube to the roll, the filament was grinding against the spool on one side. #2 it was the temperature, I'm using Hatchbox PLA and the operating temp is around 190-210 c as apposed to the 230 I had it set at. It was definitely getting gooey... Thanks again.

Commando Designs Yeah man! I wasn't sure what type of PLA you were using, I also love Hatchbox and I print that at 188. I have a Microcenter near me so I've slowly been making the transition to Inland brand PLA which I think is rebranded eSun that stuff is also great, $15 a roll and I print that at 195 with great results. did you end up printing another name plate with far better results?

It's hard to tell, but I think the Makerbot also has a Bowden-style extruder, which can also cause some issues with retraction and stringing.

I want to buy a 3d printer but a good one at a fair price. I need to do more research before buying.
