Having Jack crash a car at the start of _every mission_ as a running joke is honestly peak comedy. I'm imagining if they ever did another one of these games, for the last mission someone could ride along and politely ask him _not_ to crash his car this time. In response, Jack turns to the person, makes the smuggest face you can possibly imagine as he shifts the car out of park, before a time card pops up that says "38 seconds later" and immediately shows them crashed into the front door of the final mission with Jack still making that smug ass face.
I really liked the first game back in the day, but I never picked up this game for some reason. I suppose back in those days, we were more used to one and done games and could sometimes skip sequels, even to games we liked.
I'm pretty sure 50 cents game came out after the first one, or around it because I never thought about getting this game. It(50 cents game) even had executions like Dead to Rights, such a cool game.
I still have the Game Informer issue with the original Dead to Rights 2 on the cover. It was a direct sequel to the first game. I remember the story was to focus on the priest from the first game after he gets out of prison and Jack comes out of hiding to help him. There was going to be a refined gunplay and a new hand to hand combat system. New enemies like the knife thrower from the opening and a heavy type enemy that drops heavy two-handed weapons. Too bad we never got that game properly would've been awesome.
I'm someone notices the thing that made Jack stand out in the first Dead to Rights - he's a dork. And that's why I love him. He was also pretty easy on the eyes, but I won't get too much into that. And he had a nice voice that fit the character. Dead 2 Rights just turned Jack into Frank Castle dropping f-bombs like the game was set in Dresden. And they even made Jack look like Frank Castle. And they got rid of the guy who first voiced Jack and brought in Steve Blum, whose voice doesn't fit Jack at all. Also, the first Dead to Rights is pure camp in terms of story and dialogue but that's because it was written by Flint "Dungeons and Dragons" Dille. Dead 2 Rights' story and dialogue are not camp. Trust a man who has read every book and article on the subject. The game was written by a guy who worked as a camera loader for John Woo's American films. I looked it up on IMDB. A camera loader wrote this game. Oh, and while the first game's supposed to be noir, it actually had vivid color. Dead 2 Rights is not that. It's dull and flat and ugly. And the last worst part is that it's unfairly hard, as you said. It's like Namco thought that was one of the good things of the first game was it being butt bustingly hard. I had to use a cheat device to get through. Hey, they cheated me out of my money, the least I could do is cheat my way through their crappy game. Pace yourself. Don't jump into Dead to Rights: Retribution just yet. But when you do, watch the making of videos first. They're all over UA-cam, especially on Gamespot's page. Watch them and see how they had such high hopes and ambitions for the game and then replay it. It's emotionally crushing. And I'm done with my TED Talk.
14:09 This is unironically one of the funniest cutscenes I have ever seen in a video game. From the bad guy pointing out the protagonist's blatant stupidity, to him saying "aLwAyS sCHUT tHe fOOKing BAD GUYS FORST" in his cheesy russian accent with comically exaggerated animations, followed by him INSTANTLY shooting the girlfriend in the head before you get a chance to even process that... Absolute perfection.
If I recall, this game is literally stitched together from assets from a cancelled sequel by the original developers, the original concept was that Jack would have become a punisher-like vigilante fighting crime after the first game. It probably explains why there's so many issues, as devs entirely new to the series were just thrown these assets and told to make something. Hence why Jack A: has more muscles and B: has a scar on his face that he got in the first game despite being a prequel. The PSP game is amusingly ALSO stitched together from the same set of unused assets, resulting in bosses from DTR2 being common enemies and most of the levels being the same, just shorter on the PSP version.
I really don’t understand why you don’t have more subs than what you already have, your videos are very good..a great balance of commentary and not talking over gameplay but giving insight on gameplay when needed to make sure you easily explain the game to us..especially if we never played it👍🏾🔥Always hype to see ur vids
I’ll be honest man, I didn’t even realize you didn’t have 100k subscribers yet. I’ve been a fan of this channel for a while and your commentary is fuckin perfect in my opinion. I have no doubt you’ll reach your goal, the passion and effort is clear and I think it’ll start to show
I dunno for me this is one of those situations where everyone online has one opinion and mine has always been completely different. Dead to Rights 1 had a good story but gameplay was crap and it had too much mini games. Dead to Rights 2 was the perfect sequel for me, just action, action, slomo, tight arena shootouts - none of the boring stuff that wasn't shootouts. It focused on the stuff that I actually wanted from a video game. Also I would recommend Dead to Rights Reckoning for the psp, it's pretty good and I think even more streamlined the gameplay of DtR2
Looking forward to the Retribution review... it's definitely a guilty pleasure B-tier game for me, it's schlocky but damn is it satisfying to play. Seeing this makes me glad I accidentally dodged DTR2 as a kid though, I can't believe that was the product of three years of work. I wonder what happened behind the scenes lol
I had read a post on the Unseen64 website that this game was originally supposed to be a direct sequel. There was also talk of that for the PSP game, "Dead to Rights: Reckoning." If you read the post, you're also come across some pictures of character models that were used in this game and in the PSP game. I had also watched a stream of the original and this game. The man who did the commentary had dug up some info that Jack's original voice actor had recorded lines for the original version of this game but then the plans were changed.
I’ve been loving your retrospective videos, so damn nostalgic and covering games I’ve forgotten about and no one else covers. Please consider doing Predator: Concrete Jungle one day!
As a child, I played everything from bad games to good games because i just loved video games so much. My dad always bought me two games at a time from Gamestop every paycheck and the first Dead to Rights was one of them. I truly enjoyed that game especially the stripper scene 😂 Don't really know much about the sequal because and didn't even know they had a sequel.
13 year old edgelord me thought that CGI intro cutscene (that also doubled as a trailer for the game) was the hypest shit every. It had the same energy as the ones made for that 50 Cent game that came out around the same time. Also worth mentioning is not only is this game a prequel, but the PSP exclusive Dead to Rights: Reckoning also serves as a prequel to DtR:2. While it's only logical to have them be self-contained stories as every plot thread in the first was tied up with a mountain of bodies, it only makes the Police Chief's reasons to frame Slate in the first game totally *insane* Why would he want to mess with the most dangerous man alive who no doubt has a bodycount in the 5 digit range by the events of the First game? Lol.
Another solid review my friend! Excellent points as to why it's still a fun game in spite of it's obvious flaws compared to the fantastic first game in the series!
Never played the second game. Can't be as bad as Shellshock 2 Blood Trails. Review Dead To Rights Retribution. It's pretty much a reboot of the 1st game.
I actually really enjoyed Dead To Rights: Retribution. Picture Marcus Fenix as a martial arts expert with a savage attack dog as a partner and there you go! Great video!
I don't remember Steve Blum was in this game. This game is a bit shit back in the day. I enjoyed 1 & Retributions, but this...not so much. Good vid, Hammer. Looking forward to that Godfathe vid. The PS3 release. Not the shit PS2 version.
Oh his voice changed if u did include that he’s voice by Steve Blum the same guy who’s spike in cow boy bebop and mugen samurai champloo . And everyone’s favorites tank Dempsey
I was really into the first one. I played it when I was 17 or so. My brother bought me this for my 18th birthday, and I hated it. Jack wasn't Jack anymore. I hated his new voice actor, and I hated the random locations that were just stitched together cause other games did it. It was a very bland sequel that made me very, very sad. I still have it as it's not in my nature to get rid of gifts. I sometimes try to play it, but when I go to put it in, I just remember how boring it is and instead end up playing Blood Omen or Soul Reaver.
I've always felt the difference between max payne and dead to rights. Is max payne is an homage to film noir cop gone rouge story knowing when to be serious but also showing the effects this kinda story would have on someone. Dead to rights is more an over the top parody of the genre you can tell the tounge is in cheek when Jack says things like "don't worry...he's already dead." Or randomly quotes movies like the commando quote
Great vid hammers 🔨 So all great points tho i loved all 3 but yes 2 and 3 were weeker lacked uniqueness but the sick disarms were what makes me come back to those games i dont miss the bomb mini game ugh made me tense i think they bring back moving as shadow in retribution tho thank god
This game story is not bad as a prequel but Jack's behaviour in this game is not matched with the first game. In DTR 1 Jack's behaviour is cool and emotionless . But in DD2 jack became Rude and had emotion after losing his Girlfriend. Even the jacks body figure looks much older than the first game. If the script writer of DD2 wrote a proper sequel story after the first game maybe we were satisfied with the good ending.
Hey mr hammers can you do a retrospective on the elder scrolls IV oblivion it is one of the best games ever, if you’ve never played it you should deff give it try your going to love it since you love fallout 3
The only game ive seen do a good prequel is red dead redemption but even that has its shares of plot holes due to the story having been fleshed out and them adding to it creating more. So i can imagine how awful this mustve been.
Man I normally don't care about the writing in video games but what little tou showed frustrated me. It's like the first one was successful they rushed this one out quick
I played an even enjoyed the PSP game first, and then watched this video, and... This game is somehow worse? Also, it just me, or does Jack look older in the prequel, than the first game?
@MrHammers You should talk about it in the retribution review, just briefly talk about it for a couple of minutes. Just an idea, looking forward to the next one.
I'm gonna look it up only because you brought it up, but never offered an explanation which doesn't set you too far apart from these game devs using the term incorrectly... how about an example of how "dead to rights" is properly used, instead of only pointing out that its wrong...lol
I don't have a pre determined time for a video when I write. I just say everything I wanna say about a video, some games just don't have as much to talk about

It's my favorite part of the game to be honest, I like how it's barely even addressed too. He just does millions in property damage on every call lol
I really liked the first game back in the day, but I never picked up this game for some reason. I suppose back in those days, we were more used to one and done games and could sometimes skip sequels, even to games we liked.
Like its fun if u dont mind gunning enemies and sick disarms but hammers did make good points for me it was enough tho first 1 is still the strongest
I'm pretty sure 50 cents game came out after the first one, or around it because I never thought about getting this game. It(50 cents game) even had executions like Dead to Rights, such a cool game.

Same about Retribution. It isn’t the best but it captures the original vibe a lot better than 2. It also has a pretty fun last level.
@@SummerS95-12yeah I enjoyed that on PSP really good

Haha the shellshock games are crazy 🤣

Jack: I've been shooting bad guys for over 2 hours and nothings changed besides you getting kidnapped.
It’s impressive they still managed to make ps1 looking animated cutscenes in 2005

Love that you had to point out Jack’s incessant need to destroy each and every building with cars. Haha.
It was that little bit of campy charm shining through in the writing haha. I loved it

I have a feeling you won’t enjoy retribution. Sure it was perhaps better but idk, 360 games were very hit or miss
We gonna give it a go, good or bad!
I didn't know this existed, i only know of Dead to Rights, and Dead to Rights: Retribution

Just realized the guy that voices jack slate in this game is the same for Tank Dempsey 😂
never thought I'd hear Spike Spiegle cuss so much
I love mass shooting simulators as much as the next potential psychopath but Dead To Rights 2 is just *LAZY*
This was at least better than the generic cover shooter of a sequel we got on the Xbox 360.
Due to being a fan of this series I consider this entry a guilty pleasure and yes I'm aware of it's flaws.
Nice, just in time i enjoyed your video on the first game

Dead to Rights and True Crime on the PS2 both were great first outings and then tanked it on the sequel.
As a Brazilian, I gotta say I've never seen or heard about half the games you cover here. Different economy, I think.
That's interesting, what kinda games you play back in the day?

Can u review Kane and lynch dead men it’s made by the same people who did hitman series
Very soon :)
Hey bro please review Stranglehold
I may just be nitpicking, but Jack looking bigger and older in the prequel really annoys me.
Love the first game especially the boss fights
are you gonna play the third one on xbox/ps3 ?

they try to make him Max Payne but failed
