  • Happy Thursday! In this week's episode, we get Luci's bottom prepped for new paint, find some cracks in our rudder's gel coat and tear out some wet, rotten plywood inside the boat.
    Next week we finish painting Luci's bottom, drive 3,000 miles to pick up her synthetic teak and then begin the biggest project yet - tearing up our 33-year-old teak deck.

      Everyone should be like me and already thumbs uped every one of your video's.. I mean, it's not like it's hard or takes any time away from their day, And it damn sure isn't like they're not worth a thumbs up, because they're worth 3 or 4, but old UA-cam cornered the market on those thumbs, and they only allow one per video.. Dammit! Why does UA-cam have to be so greedy with those thumbs!! lmao! Just acting a fool.. I hope all is well, and I can not wait until next week.. Peace!

      It always surprises me that people thumb down your videos ... I mean the percentage is very low but maybe a little feedback? The really funny thing is that they probably don't realise that it still counts towards You Tube taking more notice of the video which is still good news for you guys.
      Truth is I'm mostly giving the thumbs up because we now want a Aussie Shepherd to keep our German Shepherd company on our camping trips after watching your videos. Damned expensive in the UK mind!!

      Hey AC, ordered my Octo shirt, waiting to add it to my Chasing Bubbles and Delos Tees! I recently did some sailing along the Keys. Had a great time using paper charts, magnetic compass, and dead reckoning. But times they are a changing. You two seem very computer savvy, and I am not. Could you do a "how to navigate with electronic chart plotter for dummies" I would love a real simple explanation with advice on what to download, what tablet works best etc. If that is a project you feel you have expertise in I would love to watch it. If this is asking you to reinvent the wheel, and you know of a good source point me there. The UA-cam library has a lot of junk and no useful stuff in my searches. Thanx

    Hey guys, I'm a diver who does hull cleanings. Depending on water conditions that stuff may have grown there between the cleaning and when Lucy was pulled out of the water. If you're not confident in the cleanings being done, shop around for a new diver and ask them if they would be willing to take a GoPro or similar camera down with them to give your a before & after of the condition of the hull. This will also help you to keep track of overall condition below the waterline.

    This is the second video of yours that I have watched and I'm going to call you the Hulkettes because you plow through sh*t non-stop. You just don't quit. What energy and the great thing is you don't seem to let the new negative revelations put you into a mental tailspin. About the plywood around the propshaft: i had a similar set up on my Contest 29. The ply wood has two tasks. One is, on my boat, to have something to fix the inner shaft bearing to, without having to drill into the fibreglass. Second is for installation. When building the boat, they put the tube in, in which the shaft runs, line it out anfd then fill it up with Polyester.

    You two are doing a deck job so you should have time to do a full bottom job. I would strip all that old bottom paint to the gelcoat... the whole hull. Move on to the deck job to give the hull time to dry out if it needs it (have some moisture readings done). Take your time fixing the cracks and damage you find with epoxy/glass. Someone already mentioned below, the rudder could have a wet core. Take your time and fix it right. After 6 or 8 weeks or drying time and all the blemishes fixed, put on a fresh barrier coat of Interprotect 2000E.

    • @BruceInFlorida

    • @SteelDoesMyWill

  • @melee401

    Love the HR 352, bit too much boat for me though. Moisture readings on that rudder and around the anchor pintles is in order I would say. I would drill a few small holes in the very bottom of the rudder to see what comes out myself. Your can just jack some 5200 in to reseal them. The wood at the stern tube could have been temporary support for the shaft tube to hold it in place while the glass work was done.

    Ok so my guess about the plywood you found with some epoxy paint on it would be that even with an inch of fiberglass it needs a solid shape to hold on to while it cures. No need to take the plywood out after the fiberglass sets up so it sat there for years and finally rotted itself out.

      It might be a difference between the German Frers and Olle Enderlein layup design but our hull in the Rasmus is a lot different inside. The construction of the cabinetry and the slats are dead on identical though. They didn't change that at all. We have no wood down below like that embedded into the hull and have had zero problems with wetness/rot because of that. In our boat the cabinetry and V-berth supports are all sitting on a big squared-off section of fiberglass molded in as stringers from bow to stern. It is hollow and doesn't have any wood in it I do not believe. Some of the upper ones are used as conduits for wires.
      We had similar wet wood and the "potting soil" in our deck though under the stanchions. We had to open it up and dig it all out before filling in with thickened fiberglass. What a PITA.
      Your shaft tube and stuffing box are a LOT more accessible than ours. We have to basically crawl down into the keystone area in the aft cabin head-first and then below the sole panels and do a handstand to reach it.
      Don't forget to post the fixes and update us next video. I'm interested to see how you reinforced the area to support the V-berth crossbeam.
      That black stain almost looks like blood. Maybe the last owner was a cannibal and he kept the carcasses up there under the V-berth. Haha. Don't think about that ;)

    @daedster1 6 років тому

    I'm a boat builder, the rudder, they are almost always an issue with keeping them water tight, best rudder is all hi-tec composite, post and all, pricey though.
    So, rudders have metal components, and are also made of timber, foam etc all glassed with polyester or epoxy, both will not stick to metal, peels off, there's where the water gets in.
    If the inside of your rudder is dry, ur lucky, if it's wet, then it is a removal, strip & rebuild job if you don't want any more issues. (You will still have future maintenance though)
    See, those rudder pintels - the metal hinges, 'in' the rudder (where it's cracked) need to be external of the glass layup on the rudder, usually in a rebate, which has been glassed when the rudder was built, then some lay up over this for stream lining and looks, (or bog it up as later others see this as a fail and lay up more glass over the 'fail') this way no water will get into the rudder timber/foam to rot, stay wet and be forken heavy-as....
    Now here's the thing, there is the rudder post, it has the same problem, it's metal, but here I have almost always removed the glass and core around the metal stock (post) a good 1 inch, beveled in on a 45 deg angle, glassed that tidy, when half set removed any glass/resin off the post to metal, 2 pack primed the glass after a little sanding to tidy up, then slightly over filled the 45 deg glassed hole with MS Polymer - wait a day till set and with a new 5/8" craft knife blade sliced it back to the rudder shape, (MS Polymer doesn't sand good) then undercoat and anti foul her.

    • @daedster1
      @daedster1 6 років тому

      Ideally, if you can get details on the original build plans, you will then have an idea where issue is, how the hinge is built into the rudder. The above mentioned repairs, may not be the whole issue.......
      Some rudder builds have large metal plates the hinge is bolted/welded too and timber/foam is sandwiched to both sides, shaped, and glassed.
      A short term fix to the above hinge/glass crack, may be cutting away some glass to a point where the glass is thicker, then knife on MS Polymer best you can, this giving a flexible join, but every time she is hauled give it a good look over. Re building rudders is a big but not insurmountable job for your abilities, and lots of learning hear is great!

  • @oday3514
    @oday3514 6 років тому

    Possible that the wood by the prop shaft was there as a dam to hold back the epoxy/glass mixture that was poured around the shaft log. If so, it is neither structural nor needed. Remove it and move onto other projects. Any wood near the prop shaft is going to get soaked.

    Looks like your rudder has been in a collision. Inside, the core of some boats is balsa wood. Goes like sponge when wet. Replace and re fibre Matt it.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому +1

      Yea we don't think was due to a collision. It's a few small cracks in the gel coat near the mounts, the structural integrity of the rudder is sound.

    • @bowwave59
      @bowwave59 6 років тому

      Abandon Comfort lucky, maybe just stress cracks from sitting in a cradle. Or excessive rudder angle when under full power from the prop.Good luck with your refit. 👍

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому +2

      Excessive rudder angle sounds right. We'll have to look that up!

    • @bowwave59
      @bowwave59 6 років тому +4

      Abandon Comfort if you reverse your boat and apply half to full throttle spinning your prop at high speed and long durations. then turn your rudder at large angles it puts the rudder under a very high load. Short burst of power when manoeuvring. It can do the same going forward with the rudder full over and high power. Slow controlled and small rudder inputs. Maybe difficult with a long keel, but use your prop walk and prop wash to turn. Look it up. 👍👌

    I've heard that sometimes wood below the waterline gets wet due to condensation. You might not be leaking through the chain plates.

    Guys I don't envy you that work, it's the darkside of DIY boat ownership, pretty brutal but please do yourself a favour and get a multitool, as I have mentioned in a previous comment they are amazing. I'll guarantee that you'll both kiss me in pure gratitude once you've experienced the wonder and bliss of multitool ownership, especially scraping they have no match. I had a similar feeling after getting one and the realisation of a lifetime of balls-ache that could have been avoided with a multitool in my hands.
    I personally would recommend the previous generation Fein or any similar Multitool that uses a similar tool interface, because the blades are so cheap, universal and plentiful, the current generation uses an almost proprietary tool interface that has as yet not been widely cloned and copied. Last I checked the dewalt also uses a tool interface that uses easy to source blades. If you doubt my words then try at least rent a multitool first and see for yourselves what I am talking about. Good luck and don't forget to use ear muffs/plugs with noisy power tools 😉

    You mentioned your chainplates ... check out two episodes from "sailing sv sarean". I believe 3 wks ago and 1 month ago are the episodes you should see. Hopefully not an issue for you but if so may help with ideas. Good luck

    LOL... that wood around the prop shaft was structural and you ripped it out that means your boat is DEFINITELY going to sink! (sarcasm) By the way I can't wait to start tearing up some teak. God knows we're good at tearing things apart :)

    Really great vids, I am in the process of doing the same thing, selling everything and buying a boat. I would also like to document my adventure. If I was to start with one camera what would you suggest the gopro to start or a DSLR?
    Keep up the good work, you two are really great together.

    Where is that wet wood from? I thought your boat is made from Fiberglas!

  • @mrmrlee
    @mrmrlee 6 років тому

    Just wondering what the purpose of that piece of wood in the beginning was supposed to be? If it is a longitudinal stringer to stiffen the hull, then the flat surface just below it would serve the same purpose. Just seems like a bad design. If it were me I would just strip the whole area free of wood and down to bare fiberglass hull. On my boat the whole cabin sole was wet plywood glued to the hull underneath. I just ripped all the wet wood out. Much better and no moldy odor either. If you feel you really need a longitudinal stringer, I would just cut a closed cell foam strip and glass it to the inside of the hull. The glassed in box shape will provide stiffness with no worries about future rot.

    hey guys good job, Kelsey you should use a better respirator mask that stuff is poisonous and Ryan check all the chain plates and seal the deck if necessary water destroys everything

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  6 років тому +2

      Agreed! Next time we're getting full-face respirators. And the chainplates need to be rebedded and sealed. The deck comes up tomorrow so we'll have a better idea of what we're looking at with the chainplates and the new deck will be watertight. :)

    I sure hope you tested that paint for metals (not just lead). I do this for a living (I'm a "CIH", look it up). Breathing any metals is bad. You should ditch those disposable respirators and get rubber ones with purple cartridges. If your face under the respirator is covered with the dust you're trying to filter, then so are your lungs. And sorry, but you need to shave your face down to the skin. Wearing any respirator with facial hair is like punching a big hole in your respirator. The respirator has to seal tight against your skin. Breathing that dust is just asking for future health problems.

    This probably is not the last time that you two will have to do sanding, fiberglassing etc, so buy yourselves two of the proper half face mask respirators, then use, clean and store them properly, your lungs need to last a lifetime!
