Old guys can still rock! Ningen Isu (the band name) translates as "The Human Chair", which was a weird short story written by a Japanese author in 1925 about a carpenter who builds a couch that he can hide in. The lyrics start out by the singer praying to the deities of Christianity (angels), paganism (divine goddess) and Buddhism (Lord Buddha) for blessings, since his life has been a series of failures in wealth and in love. By the end of the song, though, he realizes he should be praying for all creatures and not just himself. The band's main influence is Black Sabbath, with some additional influence by Led Zeppelin and Kiss. The lead guitarist, Shingi Wajima, even plays the same guitar as was made famous by Black Sabbath's Tony iommi, a Gibson SG. The chorus incorporates scat singing, which is the singing of meaningless vowels. Their other best songs, which are all available with English subtitles, are Toshishun, The Colour Out of Space, and Namahage.

Ningen Isu was formed in 1987 by Shinji Wajima, 56 (guitar) and Kenichi Suzuki, 55 (Bass). The Drummer Nobu Nakajima, 55. Kenichi Suzuki was a KISS fan, that why he put white make-up on his face. Their music influenced by The Beatles, King Crimson, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. More information you can check out on Wikipedia.

Imo the white skull has another meaning. The bassist is dressed as a traditional monk. As in the west, white in the Japanese tradition is a symbol for purity and clarity. Traditionally dead bodies were painted white to show that the soul of the deceased became immaculate after leaving the body. For a devout monk it's similar. It's a sign that he lives according to the religious rules, having wisdom and good karma.

Ningen Isu has become my favorite band since I first heard them in 2019. I have most of their records and it it is astonishing the consistent quality of their music album after album. They just don't play metal. I have never seen a band utilize so many styles: Hard Rock, Thrash, Doom Metal and even classic sounding 1950's and 60's rock n' roll. Who would have thought of a fusion between metal/hard rock and scat? It's a shame they didn't become known earlier in the West.

I just want to add to Mike's comment. The name is pronounced with a hard G. Ningen, the G pronounced like G from Gun or Gone.
The guitar playing also incorporates a Japanese Shamisen playing style. The quick sliding back and forth on the fretboard. They've been around since the 80's and are well known in Japan, until recently with the help of UA-cam, they've become a worldwide sensation.

I am Japanese and grad to see reactions on UA-cam. Thanks. I remember they appeared on TV in the 90s and were regarded as a weird band, though music has been pretty good since then. After a short band boom, they were known almost only by hard-rock geeks. The guitarist is from the Aomori prefecture, and though his style is affected by Black Sabbath and others, the essence of a traditional instrument (shamisen) appears in the guitar solo. They never make English lyrics and persist in using Japanese.

They started in the 80’s and are literally like Japanese Black Sabbath. They are amazing. They are 100% rock and progressive too. Very great. This song’s vocals are great too. It’s about him getting old and questioning the powers at be what will happen with his life at death. You can see he doesn’t have one faith because we here angels and Buddha etc… he’s searching for clarity by asking all. Great song and riffs

Ningen is pronounced like the last syllable of 'sunning' with 'gen' with a hard 'g' not the 'j' sounding soft g. Issu can either be pronounced 'E-ssoo' or 'Ee'su'.
The guitarist, Shinji Wajima / Wazzy is dressed as a teacher from the Meiji Era.
The bassist, Ken-ichi Suzuki / Suzuken is dressed as an old-school Buddist Monk
and the drummer, Nobu Nakajima / Nobu is dressed as a casual-garbed yakuza.
They've been together for over 30years, and THIS video was the sudden catapult to fame enough to finally get to do an international tour. No big venues, mind. But every place they played, they packed...frankly, I think their promoter should have tried for a COUPLE bigger places. Not sports domes, but actual theaters could have worked quite well...

Just subbed in, thought I'd chime in...
They are actually 'our age'... not so old we can't appreciate great music.
When I first stumbled on to these guys (having spent a few years in Japan in the 60s and 70s) I couldn't get over the juxtaposition of the costumes they chose and the themes set to heavy metal!
Each member picked their stage persona and cut completely across the grain of traditional Japanese dogma... the drummer chose 'japanese hamster or Yakusa', guitarist chose 'Meiji era literary master' and the bassist chose 'buddhist monk'. I thought their costume choice was excellent and their themes, mostly dark. They're actually classified as "Doom Metal" and considering where they draw inspiration from, pretty accurate.
    But they're also great musicians!
And I think Josh would really get a kick out of a lot of their material.
    NAMAHAGE
    HELL'S MOUNTAIN OF NEEDLES
    THE CATERPILLAR
The themes are dark, but the music is awesome!

Maybe you can join us next Friday for the Live Stream on my other channel! It's a lot of fun and we all chill out, chat and listen to music together! I just finished this week's live, (Had prior plans for last night, so we were live tonight) The Lives are on my primary channel, "The Speak Easy Lounge", check it out when you get a chance. There is a LOT of great music and reactions there that might just blow you away! Here's a link. Cheers! ua-cam.com/users/TheSpeakEasyLounge

@@REACTIONDIARIES I live in Australia so the time difference makes it difficult to catch live streams as most of the ones I want to watch are generally in the US
