Day one of my south island fishing trip was as epic as all of them. easily my most successful day fly fishing these hydro canals for these giant mammoth trout. these truly are the fish of my dreams.
Egg fly and small naturals resulted in me getting the net wet a lot and landing 6 or 7 really big fish.
thanks for watching

NZ is comically beautiful. It's like something out of a dream.
Thanks heaps
Too bad their government is doing their damnedest to make it an authoritarian hell hole.
Hi Gareth, as you said, huge fish, many times! The nicest part for me was to watch you fishing under a clear sky and no other angler in sight. Thats the type of fishing we all love. Cheers mate. Harera
No other angler in sight until this fool posted his location right in the title. All for the glory and attention. What a fool
@@jumpninthedarkalley yep, there is an idiot in every location. Our problem is that we don’t have just one, we have more, many more! Cheers mate & Harera
@@jumpninthedarkalley yeah cos no one's ever heard of this spot 🖕
Dude these canals are all over social media. Get over it
@@TroutHuntingNZ Hi Gareth, you remember what your mother use to say to you?, “Now Gareth! Just because all the other kids yell to jump of the cliff, does that mean you have to yell the same thing?”. Keep it up mate, you are worth watching just for your fishing technique and your photo shots. If I wanted info, I watch Alex! Cheers mate. Harera
the drone b-roll resquence at the beginning is awesome, nice work man
Thanks heaps dude
This dude cracks me up. He is chill.
Thanks I think🤙
Got to love catching those huge rainbows eh, never gets old. Specially when you’re getting them on the fly rod. Great video mate, bravo 👏
Cheers bud
Could you imagine if there were trout like that in oregon? You would be fishing elbow to elbow with people. NZ has so much good fishing people don't have to fight over rocks to stand on. Hahahaha
Less people doesn’t hurt either.
When I was single I fished every weekend for years. where the Deschutes empty's into the Columbia their is a Green Island. Between Green and Miller Island their is a channel it starts at 25ft deep then falls to 70ft I anchor at the 25 foot with enough rope to drift over the 70 foot. I back bounce using a 4 to6 oz weight and 0/6 barbless J hook Fresh frozen squid from safeway for bait. You need rubber thread to keep the bait on the EXPOSED hook. The lowest # of white sturgeon was six but that included a 8 footer that jumped out and I had to look UP to see it! The most I ever caught was 36 I had to stop because I couldn't lift my arms. The channel between Miller and WA is fun 50ft deep FLAT purposely dragging anchor and placing my bait in the slipstream I caught a 10fter my boat is only 17ft long! Fun watching all the Salmon fishermen at the mouth of Deschutes fight for a little bitty Salmon. HA!
Here on the great lakes we have trout this big both rainbows and browns and you'd be surprised how much open space there is. So many times you can be the only one fishing on a great bite with big fish.
Laughed when I saw the conservation license plate here that said Oregon “HAS NO” Salmon. But it was a sad laugh.
Kiwis generally prefer wild fish to pellet grown canal fish 🐟
I have learnt something valuable from you today That is how far you start away from the waters edge reducing your disturbance, I am in the UK, I do this when approach a lake, I must try on the river. Thank You so much.
Cheers glad u got something from it
Love the take and hook set around 9:35... clear waters... sure helps when the canal is loaded with giants, wow!
Cheers mate
Hoping NZ will welcome tourists back soon. Bucket list fish.
Hopefully yeah
I'd say you've reached the pinnacle of the Trout Hunting dream my friend!
Check that I think you might need one or two Siberian Taimen first.
Oh yeah I want to catch them so bad. Hopefully one day
Awesome fish! I usually keep my mouth shut, but you seem to lose a lot of fish right after touching the blank above the cork. Great to see you so happy making a few videos again!
Yeah I don’t think there is anything in that . Cheers mate 🤙
@@TroutHuntingNZ Completely fair! :)
The fishing and scenery look amazing. Cheers from North Carolina!
That was freaking amazing. Love what you do. Keep up the great work
Cheers bro
Absolutely awesome!!! If it was possible I would move to New Zealand just for the fishing!!!
Welcome to the Monsters Ball! I love fishing those “grassy knolls” or “moss pods”
Appreciate your establishing shots. Congrats on your recent vid with 1.7m views & thanks for another great video, Garreth.
Thanks heaps bud I appreciate it
Big or small, the Rainbow trout is truly a magical fish. Keep up the videos!
Cheers mate
This is epic. I must admit to yelling at the screen when that take happened while you were in the phone - classic! 😂
Love your videos - thanks again.
No kidding I was wondering if anyone else caught that on the video. It never fails if you have a lure, bait or fly in the water the very moment you place your attention on ANYTHING ELSE...bang a fish eats it.....he was lucky he got that one for sure.
Been there but didnt have the correct set up to fish the huge trout. Nymphs and markers. asked a fella if I could hold up and take a pic of his catch. The trout was 3xs the size of this one caught. Massive. True story.
Those waters are absolutely breath taking. Never seen water that is that blue. I have fished the the Big Thomson in Colorado and several rivers and streams in Austrian alps but never have I seen water like that. Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing. If you ever get a chance try and fish the state of Colorado you need to especially for brook trout. Got my PB brook trout at 11 pounds. In my area the closest you can catch brook trout is the smokie mountains and those fish although wild....if you are lucky you will catch a 8 incher.....thats a trophy in the smokie mountains. Thanks for sharing.
Certainly some big fish there...but nothing beats stalking 'em on the Ikawatea !
Ok, I must visit New Zealand. The beauty is amazing in the video, can't imagine fishing that clear of water in California, honestly. And the Trout, we have Salmon here that don't get as big!
8:29 fall hits right with the beat.
Glad you noticed 🤙
Stunning fish Gareth, the frustration was worth it prehistoric bohemiths...
Cheers bud
have you ever considered giving center pinning / float fishing a try? its what I do here in the states and its really effective for trout, salmon, and steelhead. it looks like it would work really well there in there canals.
Yeah lots of people do a form of that here
Using an indicator is basically,, the same thing😄 Indicator is a Small Bobber. Canadians did it decades before, anglers did here in the US. I know because I saw it on my way for Archery hunting for Moose and Caribou in BC😒
Centerpinning is alot different than indicator nymphing. Various different concepts involved.
A lot of red of them rainbows baby!! Beauty
youre a total genius mate
When your line wrapped up on your reel. I felt that.
Yeah that was stressful!
It’s amazing how that big fish could see that tiny fly.
Can't you see flies?
@@christophermillett2273 no I’m blind. If you must know.
I know this took a lot more work than it looks. Well done mate.
Cheers mate I appreciate that
Here in Denmark a 2kg trout is a good fish.... I feel like ive been living a lie haha! Nice vid!
The Canal fish are that big for a reason the canal has large cage salmon farms in it the pellet food from those farms seeps out into the canal and the trout sit under the farm and eat that food which is designed to put weight on fast so the big trout while mostly naturally bred are all artificially fed to those proportions. So they are the Lie
Great fun to catch though I have been a few times :)
Another epic adventure. Awesome as always brother!!!! 🇳🇿🤙🏻
Thanks mate

@@TroutHuntingNZ a q aqq!a! Beautiful
How many of us were yelling “strike” when your indicator dipped while you were texting 😂😂
I was when I edited it
An awesome days fishing, what beautiful specimens, I never realised they had such mouths with the hook like a salmon, very interesting, thanks for showing us, good video sir.
That’s absolutely amazing my friend.Areas that hold that quality fish is harder and harder to find.Pleasure to watch…thanks for posting
Simple, look for a fish farm and fish the water behind. These trout eat pellets from a fish farm ... explains the lack of fighting power.
amazing ,and huge trout there
Great video of some spectacular fish and fishing. Im envious
good to see someone with your caliber gets as frustrated as i did.
Haha yeah and I cut out the really bad bits
I walked the full length of that canal in 2010, saw so many huge trout
Wow!
Chur
First fish he says "It's not massive." Holy cow that thing WAS massive. Can't imagine catching something like that in the states.
There are plenty of trout like that in the States! Try Lake Michigan. Or Arkansas White River. The World record Brown trout comes from Arkansas, USA .....NOT New Zealand!
ONE big noise on those normally calm areas will highly reduce the number of attack for the several minutes after the big scream or loud laugh. Especially true for shy and easily scared fishs such as trouts and salmons. The day you will make no noise at all keep very silent and go cross curent up a river and get them without knowing, immerged rock or anything that can hide you, you will have your most succesful day ever, dozens a big fishs a day
OMG! Amazing, the last one was bigger then Grover.
Oh my God why A Nice fishing man 👍👍👍👍👍👍🎣🎣
Cheers bud
@@TroutHuntingNZ TQ
The UK: We have canals here. They have roach and stuff in them.
NZ: That's not a canal. That's a ditch.
Ditch in the UK, Canal in NZ, and a Channel in the US. 🤷♂️
Awesome Vid! making me very excited to get a new rod and my new licence next week. I will have to take a drive down there for some fun.
So darn beautiful there. Great edit. Thanks for a great video
Thanks mate
What a beautiful place you are fishing at.
Have to add this to my bucket list 👍
Do it
Gorgeous
Cheers
New subscriber from the USA specifically the state of Idaho... Epic trout fishing 🎣🎣🎣
Cheers bud I really appreciate that 🤙
Oh this is in New zealand. No wonder there so big. They got some big trout over there.
Beautiful water.
PIGS. That is crazy fishing. Pulling trophy fish consistently is insane.
Those are some nice gar.
Dang dude. Absolute monster trout! I love it
what a fishing, 10 meters from the river.
Beautiful fish. Tip: set downstream you set the hook back into the fish instead of out of its mouth. Best of luck!
Bro, I feel for you after losing that MONSTER. But ill say, I KNEW that was a mammoth trout when you set the hook and the fish just sat there like a log for a second. AMAZING.
This would be my dream just to see these tanks of fish swim arround in de canal crazy
Yeah it’s very cool just to watch them
Thats some gorgeous water.
Even man-made canals are beautiful in NZ.You guys must have prayed a lot to the fish gods. 😛
I am surprised at how little fight they put up I fish Brook trout in eastern Canada and a solid 5lbs trout can run you to your backing line.
Yeah they are a little sluggish for there size. But also in the interest of time a lot of the fight is edited out
They look to be spawned out maybe tired from reproduction
Miss a nice brisk morning.......
"These fish are so flicking grumpy" lol no wonder.... they are monsters
Hahah yeah cheers
Wow great video man!! Those fish are absolutely beautiful, along with the location! Keep up the great work!
Thank u
Would love to fish there. Great video
Thanks heaps mate
Float fishing for these would be fun
Can’t help thinking “delicious !” when I see a nice rainbow like that. Do you not ever keep one of these trout for your dinner?
Love watching your vids bro keep it up
Big hook streamer with a small blade and you are gold.
Thumbs up was a sign. Liked.👍
Absolute monster, nice one.
Such a sweet video man!
Thanks mate
I would love to fish there one day
Excellent video again Gareth sure were beasts. Fished the canals once and got a few 5 pounders was over the moon. Keep them coming great way to spend the evening and dreaming of going over again when this Covid is under control. Regards Con
Cheers mate
I’m going change fly after this one…boom…fish on, love it🎣🎣🎣. Watched loads of videos of this canal but most use a spinner. Nothing better than fly fishing though, in my opinion. Would love to have something like this in Scotland. Another great video👍
That fish was STUPID big - made the ones in the Cabela’s fish tank look tiny! Lol. Great vid!
Cheers mate
Never seen a trout that big before…… except the two legged versions….
Well done, a lovely Jack in good nick feeding on all sorts to get to that size including Salmon farm food washed down from the holding pens ! Size for size a fresh run steelhead or Salmon or if you could get a kingfish on the fly in the sea, now they would be dynamite to tango with at that size!
`Amazing fish....Wow!
Oh! My God that was fucking Awesome
Cheers bud
Gotta love the eat while on the phone, that happens to me every time 😂
Nice wee one
My god those trout are huge 😮
Looks just like BC steelhead. The fight was very lethargic though. Fought like a wet boot.
All these fish are roid not wild
None of this is natural no hate
Control channel's
Environment control
Fed and not wild trout
Down under knows the truth
Artificial
But yes giant's
A 2lb sea run cut throat would drown these mammoth slugs🔥🤭💪✌️👌💯💥
Whatttt???No wind on the lake haha 😄
Epic fish, epic place to fish. Really, if there is a place on earth that is the definition of epic, then its NZ ;-)
My dream is to fish there (and in some other places, others i've already visited) one day.
In my homeland we have a river that i use to fish in for many years now. Old fishermen often told me about the giant trout that they used to catch there in their youth, i've seen pictures of fish that match the size of the fish you caught. I catch my fish, not only trout but also pike, also in good sizes, but very, very seldom big fish, and that "big" is far away from the "mammoth size" of your fish :-P . You have to really know the river and be creative, it's difficult, the fish are wary because nowadays there are many fishermen there, and most of them keep every fish they catch if it's legal size, some even keep smaller fish, so there is a high pressure on these fish - a mistake often means death. That's most likely the main reason why there are no more giant fish there.
Thanks heaps mate
I need to go to NZ and do this - great video - lovely fish dude.
Cheers bro 🤙
great video- some day
Pyramid Lake Nevada USA, Lahontan Cutthroat, my best was 14 lbs.
Those are some monsters you got :)
