Hey Huw. I only use the dpad to select the item, and then use the front dial to change the values. Then there is no confusion. Give it a try

OK. So you use the up/down, left/right to move the selection box - how do you then "select" the item to then use the wheel to change the value. Sorry if I'm being simple, but your suggestion sounds like it might just be the answer I'm looking for. Thanks in advance.

@@huwalban No worries. Yes, you press the QS button, use up/down/left/right to select the parameter to change, and then, on the selected item, use the front dial to make your changes. No need to push any button, just be hovering over the item you wish to change. Turning the dial to the right (clockwise) will act as right and counterclockwise as left. Then half press the shutter or hit the QS button again to exit.

Hi Huw, like you, I am generally a big fan of the menu design of the fpL, but do sometimes have the same issue with the Quick Select menu. I suspect that the Sigma engineers will tell you that the left and right arrows inside the highlighted function box refer to the row of possible settings that are displayed across the bottom of the screen at that time, and that pressing left or right sides of the wheel will move you along that row. I think there are a couple of alternative designs that might work better.
    1. Require the center button to be pressed to "lock" selection of the desired function box. Perhaps the outline color could be yellow first, changing to green after pressing the center button. Then, either clicking OR rotating the wheel would be used to select the desired setting for that function. Pressing the center button again would change the box highlight back to yellow to indicate that you can then select another function if you wish.
    2. Enable touch selection of the QS function box as the only way to select. Then use the wheel to change the settings, and touch the function box again when done.
To me, the small difference in finger pressure between rotation and clicking of the wheel is a large contributor to the frustration.
Instead of selecting the frame size at the time of image capture, I always shoot 2:3 full resolution, and make the crop selection during post. For scenes that have great subject material, I sometimes end up editing different versions from the same original, which is a big feature of 61Mpix.

Many thanks. I'm in favour of option 1. - do you know whether what you suggest can be set up in the menu? Another commenter has suggested an alternative that might just be what I'm looking for as well. Like you, I am also enjoying the freedom of 61mpx - especially when it comes to refining the frame in post. Of course, if using DNG capture then regardless of the frame size selected at the time the entire sensor is captured and presented in LR. However, I like the discipline of using the desired frame size at the time behind the camera - makes me less lazy :)

@@huwalban sadly, it will take a firmware update from Sigma to enable the touch screen during Quick Select...

I think Sigma will happily change or add that option to the next update. From what I have heard they are very responsive.

Yeah, I have discussed this with someone from Sigma UK. As I think I pointed out in the video, it isn't a big issue, and most of the time it doesn't get in the way. It always seems to be those occasions when things are changing fast that I encounter some finger fade and end up changing something else. Thank you for the comment and the support of my channel. It is appreciated.

i don't get your point: every menu is different - you can't use the one with the others experiences in mind.. . I use a Fuji GFX camera: and every time I have to change my routines and workflow. that's normal.

You are right of course. It is just that the layout of the quick menu is such that it isn't quick for me, especially if I'm in a hurry. I'd love to be able to change the actions of the buttons in the quick menu to help, but alas that is not an available option. Seasons greetings and thank you for supporting my channel.

I can see that you're frustrated by that. Can you only adjust these settings with that menu or are there buttons also? Om yhe olympus you have buttons and dials from almost all those options.

Not as far as I can see Guido, no, although another commenter has suggested an alternative that might just be what I'm looking for. As ever sir, thank you for the support.

Oh dear Huw, I can see how that cab be immensely frustrating, I am surprised though that it isn't a touch screen, which thankfully I enjoy on my camera, so I can chose the quick menu via the button on the body, just select the function which then displays the options and tap on the required one, et voila! It's a shame Sigma haven't gone down that route as it would make your life so much easier. I do though agree re custom functions, I never use them for the same reasons as you 🥺

Hello Roger. The fpL does have a touch screen, but I've disabled it because I kept activating options. As I'm using the EVF, I'm not looking at the camera itself and was finding that if I missed a button - say the QS menu option - then I was touching the screen and activating something else. Another commenter has suggested an alternative that might just be what I'm looking for :) Hope you are well sir

Yeah all good thanks Huw, hope you are too! I guess that I'm lucky then because my touch screen is turned off as soon as I look through the EVF so can't change anything by mistake, which is good when you have a nose the size of mine 🤣

All true, however I do find the quick menu layout frustrating especially when I'm in a rush to change something quickly. Each to their own I guess. Seasons greetings and thank you for supporting my channel.
