Artificial Intelligence or AI is a touchy subject in the world of photography, and I have to admit that I'm torn as to whether it is a benefit or a curse. However, I've recently pondered whether the suspicion around AI being used to create images is actually helping to drive the resurgence in film photography.

You raise a very valid point about the genuineness of film photography against the insidious march of AI in digital photography, which is difficult to avoid using, even if for just removing an unwanted element of a picture. But film photography has been equally manipulated in the past, I site the Cottingley Fairies as an example, or one early 1900's picture of my home town that includes an aircraft supposedly flying over, but which has clearly been added post capture, so yes Film can indeed be a genuine record, but as with AI. it has to be down to the integrity of the photographer to create a genuine picture in either format? Film does still have a place in photography, and has a genuinely got a part to play in the future.
Very interesting point. I have been taking photographs for a long time first with film then digital. Since photography and lightroom has become more and more artificial I have lost interest so now Iam starting to re learn film photography again. I produce a lot less pictures but they are special and made with great care. People capture amazing pictures on their phones with no knowledge or interest how they got them but for me, in my opinion they are empty images. The news of the Pentax 17 is good news as it might help to lower the price of film , who knows. Looking forward to your next video Huw
Excellent points. I had a look at the Pentax 17 at the Wales and West Show last weekend and it is a lovely little thing. A bit too plasticky for my liking and the £500 price tag is a little steep for my pocket, however if the price comes down then I am definitely in the market. Pictures with great care is a wonderful expression - I might have to pinch it - and it describes the process of film photography perfectly. I am just a deliberate when behind a digital camera, which is why I think the Sigma fpL suits my approach. Thank you for the excellent comment and for the support of my channel. It is greatly appreciated.
I confess my use of film is entirely driven by nostalgia. I enjoy the process of metering, shooting and processing film because that's where I started in photography. ( I don't enjoy the processing of analog prints, or at least the time and effort and health risks involved in so doing, so I scan the negs and process them on a computer.) I do think the wider adoption of film by the digital generation may be a desire for a more "authentic" experience, even before the advent of AI. There is a feeling (a complete myth I might add!) that film photography was purer and shots were printed straight out of camera. It is true that post-processing was less extreme than with digital - it just took too much effort for it to be otherwise. And if that desire for simplicity and back-to-basics is the primary driver then AI will undoubtedly accelerate the move. If, on the other hand, it turns out to be simply driven by a hipster style fashion for analog then it will fade and die again because ultimately it's too expensive, slow and technically inferior in image quality.
PS I completely agree about cassette tapes, they had horrible sound quality, even worse than MP3, and they were inconvenient to use, prone to jamming and breaking. Even on a £1000 Nakamichi deck they never approached LPs in sound and any revival is using much cheaper gear than that! The only thing in their favor was the ability to create your own playlist and carry it around in a bag or pocket. But even that is much easier on a digital device today. A comeback? - Quite bizarre.
I hate it when film photographers get political, if you feel the same please don't watch my latest youtube short all about BIDEN, TRUMP, and 35mm Sprocket Hole Photography. Love your set up. I need me a holder for my square filters. I thrifted them all. Not too keen on landscape stuff, but you're getting some real slappers out here buddy. Happy Snapping. SUBBED!
