- Thank you to @Blondihacks and @mrpete222 their excellent educational and entertaining content in general. I've only had this lathe set up for about a month and the Blondihacks lathe skills playlist in particular has been indispensible in learning!

As soon as I saw that steel in the chuck I just knew that tool holder was gonna hit it. I thought it’d be when you were turning the steel down. The first time I ran my tool holder into the chuck I was threading. I ruined the threads. Only advice I have is that you don’t have to make passes with the file if the machine is running. You can just lightly hold the file on the piece of steel. Fr tho good shit man I’m really excited to see more of your projects turn out perfect!
This is sick. I like the constrast of the bright guide rod against the black.
This was so cool dude. I have no idea how a lathe works lol.
If you like machining content you should check out Blondihacks and Mrpete222! Their youtube channels are awesome and this video was definitely inspired by Blondihacks' videos.
That's awesome man.
Nice!
Very cool. Please make more videos like this
I will! Not any time soon however but I will have to make some mounts for a couple of my suppressors (ops inc style)
This is great content
This is really cool
Cool vid. Love the Starretts! I'm too clumsy for nice verniers like that.
Great video, I need to get a small lathe
I need a metal lathe....
So easy if you know how....
I got to use these in High-school
Now if only I had my hands on a lathe……
Dude that is a super cool laith. What is that thing, looks really old given the drive belt and pulleys.
Also have you considered the "blue-ing" technique I think it's called that gives the steel a protective coating. This old Tony here on YT has a good video about it. Thanks for the content. I dig it
it's a 1920s South Bend. I thought about bluing it but liked the contrasting bright surface finish
Hey dude, I'm a tool and die apprentice. If I might make one suggestion if you're going to be doing projects like this--get yourself a copy of the Machinery's handbook. It has information about damn near any kind of machine operation or any other kind of metal working you can think of. Feeds and speeds have been broken down into mathematical formulas based on material type and tooling used.
I don't know if you have any kind of formal training as a machinist/tool maker/whatever but you did a good job on this. Also, out of curiosity how much did this lathe cost you?
I think it was like 1500. I've taken a look at a copy of machinery's hand book and it looks like a bit much to me 😅
Nice video! Maybe blue it? unless you like the contrasting color. Thanks for the demonstration.
I thought about bluing it but it looks nice in the white I think.
I need to check mine now lol. I could have sworn my 92x rod is metal.
chances are it's probably plastique
@@JaredAF happy to report it’s metal! Maybe I had an earlier production one. I got it right after it came out. A regular 92x compact, without the rail.
@@m3chan1zr yeah the compacts were the last to switch to plastic. the no rail 92x compacts are discontinued, id hold on to that
Ive been making recoil spring guide rods out of stainless steel for the last 46 years .
it's super simple, great project for a noob like me
@@JaredAF good job ! Polish the guide rod to a mirror finish and the spring will glide smoothly without squish.
“Facing off the stock as is tradition”, is that a nod to another UA-camr? Or is saying that just as common? Either way great video. It was a good reminder to myself I need to buy a mill to go with my lathe so I can be more productive with my hobbies!
yes, blondihacks, go check her out and her channel is linked in the description
@@JaredAF I figured, there’s a lot of good people out there machine tools. She’s one of the couple I used to get started with my lathe!
Lathe fetish
Im surprise youre not using coolent on the steel rod and the tool to reduce the heats thats been generated.
i was using plenty of cutting oil and using a leaded "free-machining" steel. i wouldn't think about taking those same cuts on certain other steels
QQQ can you oder a tighter berrel like 1 an 1/16 twist an install or exsplian glass pack an diffrent berral types an what the binfits of having it over the barrel that came with riffle/ hand thanks or u can make a funny video of you cutting of a arm brace just kidding about that last one lol
