One of the best caddis fly patterns ever designed. I met Gary fishing the Big Hole river and we sat and talked for a bit and he was telling me about his study of caddis flies and I was like what ? A few years latter I saw his book on caddis flies and that was the beginning of my deep dive into caddis and the use of Antron yarn . I still have some of the original dubbing he sold commercially including some of his stonefly blends and still use them occasionally. Definitely was an interesting character. Thanks for sharing and bringing back fond memories of days gone by.
Great appreciation and admiration for Mr. McPhail's tying and tutorials. A true master ofmthe art! Rarely do i purchase materials used in his tutorials, rather find altenatives as I already have more materials than 10 tyers would use in a lifetime. Being a tight wad, most of my materials are sourced now from my wife's craft bins or the craft shops. Have been tying and using this fly since the 90's without knowing the name as it was copied from a local tyer that also didnt know a formal name. Was sometime in the early 200's before I finally became aware of Mr. LAfontaine. Nicely tied Davie!
Gary was the Caddis master,RIP.I have never known a better pattern than this emerging pupa during a caddis emergence ... properly fished at the right depth and manner. Thanks
Davie lovely tying Not long now for trout season 1st March (rivers) would like to ask your views on klink hammers I’ve done well with them Thanks from Ireland 👍
I am watching this about 5 months after you posted it. How has the sparkle pupa done when fishing it this season? It’s fascinating to see how you have adapted the fly to your style. Much respect. It looks great. I’m about to tie a batch of emergent and deep sparkle pupa flies for a local Healing Waters chapter, so I am watching every video I can find that demonstrates how to tie it and next will go back to his book. I learned to tie it in a class with Gary in the 1990s, but I can’t haven’t tied it in about 20 years. He said it would it work, but I secretly wondered until I fished it on the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine. The landlocked salmon in pools and slow eddies loved it. If I may, I suggest you get some Antron yarn in orange (Charlie Craven has it if your vendor doesn’t carry it). In line with Gary’s theory of color attraction, orange is a powerful attractor in late day sun or just before sunset.. I have yet to find an orange caddis, but the color really works on a clear day. As a result, I tried orange on other flies in other situations, and it worked for striped bass, bluefish, trout and freshwater bass. Other flyfishers might give a strange look when they see your orange fly, but you can respond with a grin when you are catching fish. Be well.
Never had a trout hit a fly harder than a bubble caddis. Color yarn that worked really well was a light mauve.. in the water it looked like a blood filled mosquito.
Did enjoy it, Davie... thank you. I can't find it again, but somewhere in the recent ties you mentioned your scissors being nice and sharp. My impression was you had sharpened them. A while back your had tried this and not gotten the results you would have liked to have. What are you doing now for sharpening that is working well? Mike
The Taking of The Fly D. A. Brattain There is a painted meadow, in a wood of ancient trees, Where fairies dance on waters, of a brook that no one sees. And in the brook, within its flow, where currents form a seam, There is a watchful picket, standing station in the stream. His stoic eye set searching, for a maiden passing by, His senses keenly watching, for the fairy floating fly, When there in naked splendor, a nymphal verdant form, The lifting light of morning sun, a promise to make warm. Then swimming to the surface to shed her evening gown, The picket slips beneath her and pulls the maiden down. His heart holds no emotion, no enmity or greed, Just rings left on the surface, to consummate the deed. But as he turns to station, he feels a painful prick, A dagger drawn from maiden’s gown, now from his lip does stick. And so, to anglers on the beat, make sure your points are sound, When fishing fairies on the stream, take care they are well-gowned.

Yeah for sure... the first one to scuba dive during his research on the caddis.
Nice one Davie
That room will have more materials in it than any tackle shop 🎣🎣
Thank you for this old pattern! I was trying it long time ago and I remember having hard time. You made it simple. ❤

My favourite fly both as a emerger and nymph with or without a bead. Had luck with it with tungsten bead and hook 10-8 for the seatrout
