Silicone Ear Plugs as Diff Grease?!?

- I stumbled across this on the X-maxx facebook groups and thought I would give it a shot!
Instead of using the normal 1M fluid in the center diff, or a locker to really lock the diff - use cheap silicone ear plugs! I got a box of 36 for $9!
The X-maxx group claims the putty is somewhere around a 20M fluid.
It is cheap, and I needed to rebuild my center diff - so let's try it!!

Just did this to my outcast a few days ago really woke it up... What I did was put a dog bone in each slot on the diff and turned it till I was happy with the amount that was in there I wanted a lil movement just in case.... I had a spool in my Xmaxx and I went through 4 front diffs before I decided to go back to the center diff

The spool for the xmaxx is a lil stronger than the one you had in the kraton... When I'd land wrong boom another diff gone

I have found this trick works most of the time. Certain vehicles it appears to not for some reason - but cheap enough to try for sure!
Now to just find my silicone earplugs I bought awhile back for some odd reason lol

@@RoadsideRC I couldn’t find them haha, instead, I mixed some beeswax with some mineral oil and packed em up, it’s stiff now only time will tell though =)
thats a great idea. ive been using 1million in my trucks but that looks like a way better alternative. I might put 100% silicone caulk in one, let it dry and see if it stays locked
Hmm - I would be interested to see if that works also! It might, assuming the gears don't shred it!!
Throw some concrete in the center diff!
Better off using hot glue or some JB weld if you’re interested in a full lock.
The xmax world will also tell you to leave a little bit of the original oil in the diff with the ear plugs

So far, so good. Seems to work almost like intended. Thicker than a 1M fluid, but not 100% locked. I have run it a few times now.

Why not use Traxxas 20 Mill? These aren't made for locking diffs so I'm sure they break down when they heat up and cool.
The Traxxas 20mil would be better! Sometimes it is hard to find, and certainly more expensive than this.

Have you had any problems using this technique?asking cause I'm in process of building a 6s traxxas slash to hopefully put it over the 100mph mark and looking for ideas for the rear diff on it other then running a locker in it.
No issues at all!
I have used this method in a bunch of vehicles now.
Just make sure you pack it full, otherwise the gears will try to eat it.

Why would you want a lock diff instead?
Really depends on the application and how strong all of the other parts are.
A truly fully-locked diff (like with a mechanical locker or spool) has zero give. So when there is stress on the driveline, it needs to be strong enough to take it.
As an example: for something like my Axial SMT10 - I know the driveshafts and other parts are not super strong, so perhaps I want it to not be truly locked.
This is a very cheap way to essentially get a VERY thick diff fluid.

I literally have an X-maxx hanging on the wall. As of right now, 8 brands in my garage.
These silicone ear plugs can be used wherever folks want to use them. I have used them in bashers and crawlers - in whatever diff I wanted to try them in.

Hi! Love you videos. Im a noob in this world of hobby grade rc’s. I’ve done some research already and watched a bunch of yt vids and decided to get a kraton 6s v5 as my first car. Do you recommend to reshim the diffs of a brand new k6 v5 along with changing diff fluids? Im at about below average skill in doing my motorcycle tranny and some mechanical jobs in cars. But im a bit hesitant to reshim a bnew k6 out of the box being a newbie and no available parts nearby. Would love to know what you think. Thanks

I wouldn't suggest you do anything to the truck - nothing at all mechanically!!!
Look it over and read the manual. Get comfortable with each of the components and the general design....then just go have fun!!!
My 6S Kraton has been one solid truck. I really hope you enjoy it.
Honestly, I drive mine on 4S, but with the optional higher speed pinion.

In general, Can you use RTV silicone (black) along with the diff gasket? To help seal for no leaks?
I have used it to help seal a differential - yes.

@@LRCR Makes sense. I think the epoxy ends up more locked than this, assuming it gets a good hold on the gears. In theory, this will still allow some slip when forced.

Why dint the cars just come locked stock?
Depending on how and where you want to drive it, a more active center diff can be better. Example - more loose surfaces like a racetrack.
I wonder if these plugs can be thinned down with silicone grease or regular grease.
I belive they can be. Not sure it will really "mix", but once run, I have seen them be more liquid-like.

@@Chris-hr8yz it gave a posi-traction sort of effect. When I move the wheels manually there is some resistance between tires and it seems pretty smooth. I did this on my Traxxas Slash 2wd differential and my SMT rear differential.

I wiped most off with a towel. When you take the gears out of the diff, you have easy access to most pieces.
Also, I didn't really worry about getting it all off.

@@kentucky4696 Been happy with it. Seems to work for most vehicles. Occasionally need to pull it out and put fresh plugs in, but otherwise it is good!!

Hey bud its me again LOL....My Lhs was busy so Im assuming they made a mistake, they said 1 Million diiff fuid is thicker than 20 million.....I thought the higher the number the thicker...Please help. Thanks as usual.

So the earplugs go in the center not the rear?
You can put them in any diff you want.

@@imserious2187 Just consider this as a very thick diff fluid. The thicker you go in a diff, the more the two outputs of that diff are locked together. The thinner, the more action the diff can have.
Depending on how you are setting up your vehicle, you will want different thicknesses.
Was thinking on doing that to my Losi 5T but, do they withstand heat?

It has been fine in all vehicles I have run, but never near torch heat. What is the torch for?

Why you want to lock center diff?
Less power gets shifted to the front wheels. Instead, you get even power distribution front-rear.

In the grand scheme...yes.
Bottle of 20M fluid is $10-$20.
This was $5 and has lasted me years.
@@RoadsideRC dang I just paid 7 bucks each for associated diff oil at my local track. They were 7k 5k and 3k though. Idk if that matters on price.

You sure can. The problem is controlling the thickness. If you don't want to cheat like this and "lock" the diff, I would really recommend going with an actual RC diff fluid.

Tacky grease works...broke diff in with new grease..course I over greased but qtips cleaned up that scene....also received Maxima water proof grease in today.....motosport.com...$7.99...cheapest you'll find....total $16.05
