Awesome! You do not need the waterproof case unless you snorkel below 10m. That said, if you are in the ocean every day I do recommend the case to help protect the camera from repetitive salt water exposure, which is hard on the camera and hardware. Hope that helps!
Thanks for this Brent. Do you recommend 30 FPS + HDR over 60 FPS (and no HDR) for scuba diving? I'm going to test out my new Ace Pro on some wrecks in Palawan next week!
I found both to be very similar in my limited testing. If you don’t need slow motion for the wrecks, I would choose 30FPS + HDR since you’ll be deeper without perfect vis. Or simply create two presets and try to record some scenes in both, however if 30fps is all you need that is going to do better in low light.
The Micro 3.0 is great if you want utmost simplicity and ease of use. It also does well in external light mode when using a light to illuminate subjects, whereas the auto-color correction of action cameras can be thrown off by the light, depending on how much of that subject fills the frame. The Ace Pro has great video, general color correction, etc. The lights I'm using are the MW-4300s you'll see on my guide to underwater lights: tutorials.brentdurand.com/video-light-comparison/

Hi Brent, i also think this actioncam is the best today for underwater videos compared to gopro and dji; the only thing i'm disappointed is that all pro lenses like the backscatter wide lenses or aoi and ion lenses are shaped for the gopro underwater case so you can't put them in insta 360acepro, the moment you can do this it become crazy looking for me. In my opinion unless they don't make lenses adapter for ace360 pro the hero12 black with a wide pro lense like the backscatter one looks still better.
This is a great point. The Backscatter FLIP system for GoPro is excellent... and essential if you want to focus close to your subject (e.g. small subjects and macro). Maybe there will be a filter or lens adapter for the Ace Pro housing soon.
I read that clarity zoom can be saved within a preset, but I haven’t been able to make it work. Have you? 4K60P with Clarity zoom on and some video lights would be a nice macro mode given the close focusing limitations. Also, have you found any third party compatible wet macro lens for Ace Pro? I emailed Backscatter and they unfortunately don’t plan to make one.
I don't see it as an option in the camera preset menu. Did you try adjusting the preset settings via the app? And no, I'm not aware of any wet macro lenses yet. The best would be some sort of universal adapter so you could use it across various housing brands (even if they change sizes with a new camera version).

Hi - I have not tested either camer snorkeling yet without the dive housing. Each is depth rated to 10m without the housing but I usually always use it in the water. Not sure about using the touchscreen underwater without the housing - I need to try this!
Not that I'm aware of. It would need a 67mm threaded adapter positioned in front of the len so you can screw in the macro lens. Or a flip adapter, which is also not available yet.
I haven't used the RS 1, but the Ace Pro is very different from a 360 camera. Hi, I have the update but don't see a dive profile in the camera modes menu. Are you seeing this in the Presets area? There is no setting for AquaVision 2.0 since that happens automatically when underwater. You can use the app though to customize the color correction and how heavily the correction is being applied. I do use selfie sticks for certain shots. This one is my favorite from Insta360: store.insta360.com/product/selfie_stick?c=2141&from=accessory?INRVP3L

Hi! Should i take this camera or the insta x4 for recording clips underwater? I really like the 360 feature of the x4 but i don't know if the quality would be better on a single lens camera like the ace pro
Hi. I think it depends what you're trying to do. The Ace Pro captures impressive underwater video, and the auto color correction plus AquaVision 2.0 in the Insta360 app makes it quick and easy to post to social. But if you want the 'drone' or '3rd person' views of a 360 camera, then go for the X4. You just need to be ok with the stitching and other 'sacrifices' you get in exchange for the benefits of 360 (e.g. shoot then frame later). Hope that helps
There's a new firmware update. This is from the list of Improvements: "Improved algorithm for better image quality and true-to-life colors when underwater." I'll be curious what you have to say about it. I've been holding off of getting one since it's 8 bit but I'm still intrigued.

Hi - You can configure a custom Quick Switch menu but it’s the same for video and photo modes. There is more to cycle through if you have many presets for photo and video, but it’s quicker to jump between presets in either mode from one menu.
Yes! Just like the GoPro, it's waterproof by itself to 33ft / 10m. That said, I always recommend the dive housing if you're using the camera in the ocean or pool frequently.
Thanks a lot for the tips. I have a question. I can't seem ti find aquavision 2.0 in the app when trying to edit the videos. Any suggestion? Thanks a lot
It can be removed from the housing, but you'd need to check the Insta360 website to see if a replacement is available: store.insta360.com/product/ace-pro-dive-case?c=2648&from=accessory?INRVP3L
Yes! It's rated to 10m / 33ft. That said, if you plan to use it a lot in the ocean I would still use the waterproof case since saltwater is tough on gear even though the camera is waterproof (e.g. particulate getting into microphone holes). When using without the housing, just be sure to soak well in fresh water immediately afterwards.

Ace pro was fine out of water. I'm not diving & dont want to carry lights when traveling. My assessment: way too many posts sponsored by ace pro. Not worth the buy if u r shooting mainly under water.

After using the Ace Pro for a few months(3-25m depth scuba dives), I found a few issues with using this camera: 1. minimum focuse is too long for many UW opertunities. Shooting people and big animal no problem. Smaller animals in the 1 meter range really does not deliver peroper sharpness. 2. The software GoPro has for editing and sharing is much better than Insta360 software. 3. No front screen monitor to see yourself. The flip screen does not help UW in the plastic portoective box. Hard to get good selfies. 4. Stills are of poor quality. 5. File save to file is very slow. Shooting stills is really hard when each file takes about 3 seconds to save before the camera allows you to shoot another still photo. 6. Stabilization UW isn't that great. 7. Upgrading(back) to Gopro 13 for the new lenses and software features.

You just need to be ok with the stitching and other 'sacrifices' you get in exchange for the benefits of 360 (e.g. shoot then frame later). Hope that helps
@@BrentDurand Thank you very much :) I didn't know the acepro had those features
There's a new firmware update. This is from the list of Improvements:
"Improved algorithm for better image quality and true-to-life colors when underwater."
I'll be curious what you have to say about it.
I've been holding off of getting one since it's 8 bit but I'm still intrigued.
Thanks for the heads up. I've updated the firmware already but waiting to take the Ace Pro in the water again. Have some shallow snorkeling lined up next week and will see how it does.
So.....the big question.....how does it shape up to a 1inch and full frame camera? Thanks for the replies on my other questions too Brent
Great question. I can't offer a comment as I haven't tried to capture the best footage possible with manual settings and post-processing. At some point we'll have this answer for underwater video!
Thanks Brent, really looking forward to that one!
selfie stick brand? is it neutral under water? thks
This one is an older one from PolarPro. I don't think they're making them anymore but below are two other options. I like the tripod option since it's more versatile on a dive trip when space is limited):
GoPro Max Grip/Pole/Tripod: amzn.to/3Weq8Y6
SandMarc Pole: amzn.to/3wa9vCl
Here's my article with more mounts for action cameras: tutorials.brentdurand.com/gear-guide-for-small-underwater-cameras/
Will the custom presets have video and photo presets dedicated when in the corresponding mode? Much like GoPro preset menu
Hi - You can configure a custom Quick Switch menu but it’s the same for video and photo modes. There is more to cycle through if you have many presets for photo and video, but it’s quicker to jump between presets in either mode from one menu.
@@BrentDurand thank you!!
is the ace pro water proof with no extra under water casing required
Yes! Just like the GoPro, it's waterproof by itself to 33ft / 10m. That said, I always recommend the dive housing if you're using the camera in the ocean or pool frequently.
Can you use the screen on the Ace Pro underwater?
I honestly haven't tested this since I've only used the dive housing. Sorry!
Thanks a lot for the tips. I have a question. I can't seem ti find aquavision 2.0 in the app when trying to edit the videos. Any suggestion? Thanks a lot
You're welcome! When you're viewing the clip in the app, tap the three dots in the upper right corner. You should see the AquaVision 2.0 box there.
@@BrentDurand thanks a lot. Found it. 🙏🙏🙏
I like to use my GoPro underwater always on during my dive. Does the ACE Pro have to ability to stay on without turning off?
It does, yes
Is the dive case O ring replaceable? Can I buy it by itself without the case in case it rips.
It can be removed from the housing, but you'd need to check the Insta360 website to see if a replacement is available:
store.insta360.com/product/ace-pro-dive-case?c=2648&from=accessory?INRVP3L
is it really water proof without case, im really afraid to use it in under water
Yes! It's rated to 10m / 33ft. That said, if you plan to use it a lot in the ocean I would still use the waterproof case since saltwater is tough on gear even though the camera is waterproof (e.g. particulate getting into microphone holes). When using without the housing, just be sure to soak well in fresh water immediately afterwards.
i even used my ace pro on typhoon 🤣
What program do you use to edit
Hi - All of these clips are straight out of the camera with no editing. I tried to keep the process as simple as possible for this review. The footage could probably look better with some editing and color grading!
Could you provide link to cover
Absolutely: store.insta360.com/product/ace-pro-dive-case?c=2648&from=accessory?INRVP3L
Hi Brent, I am new with underwater videography. I use go pro 7 or osmo action 3 for shooting. I am not in anything specific type of videos like macro but just captures different fishes moving around. I need some light for videos for my action cameras. Some examples ua-cam.com/video/779SbFsTPiA/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/sQi6mxYqanc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/4jHsOrgdWow/v-deo.html. Can you suggest me some video lights which will suit my preferences?
Hi, absolutely. I have a list of my current favorite video lights at various price points here: tutorials.brentdurand.com/video-light-comparison/
Is it a sponsored video?
It’s a product overview video paid for by Insta360 👊
I tried the ace pro vs the gopro hero12 underwater while snorkeling & found the ace pro much poorer under water. Images were off focus and water looked much murkier vs the hero12's footage. Ace pro was fine out of water. I'm not diving & dont want to carry lights when traveling. My assessment: way too many posts sponsored by ace pro. Not worth the buy if u r shooting mainly under water.
Thank you for the feedback. Certainly helpful for everyone comparing these cameras. If you didn't yet, check out my review with footage from both cameras shot at the exact same time (although at dive depths): ua-cam.com/video/0HQqCwkqoRo/v-deo.htmlsi=cIf6m7QsR6FW8WGC
Great insights and thank you for sharing!
More footage,
Less commentary!
Also I feel like your lighting was more of a favors than the cameras.
Thanks for the feedback
