- The prediction of Johnny Campo that Pleasant Colony would become the 12th winner of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown was shattered yesterday as Summing scored a neck victory in the $284,300 Belmont Stakes. Pleasant Colony could do no better than third as Highland Blade held off the desperate effort of Jorge Velasquez to become a Triple Crown jockey. And Campo, who had correctly predicted Pleasant Colony's victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, made no excuses for the colt he has trained only since April. ''It's gonna happen, and it happened,'' said Campo, who suffered the same fate in 1971 when he saw Jim French run second to Pass Catcher in the 103rd Belmont. ''You can't be sorry, that's the name of the game. You can't win 'em all. My horse was trying to run but he wasn't gaining any ground and he wasn't losing any ground.''

I asked John Campo on a CNN call-in show that Wednesday if he were worried that Summing might steal the race. "Never been done," said the man who forgot Bold Forbes had done it in 1976. The night before the Belmont, I hit a $2.00 OTB late double of a 2-1 and 14-1 who paid $310 for the double, taking away my greed, plus the rain scared me away from Summing, who won at 7-1.
It's amazing Pleasant Colony's bid for the Triple Crown falls short as the favorite for Mr. Evans in the Belmont to a fresh horse in Summing. 33 years later, Pleasant Colony's grandson Tonalist owned by Mr. Evans' son is a fresh horse in the Belmont and denies a Triple Crown to favorite California Chrome... What a crazy game indeed.
Tonalist won the Peter Pan and then took the Belmont 4 weeks later. All that fresh horse shit you say is just a bunch of bullshit.
Pleasant Colony has been a distinguished stallion for many years.
Expert ride by Georgie Martens. Made a perfect mid race move against a soft pace. I remember he had a 37 and change workout around the dogs just a few days prior to this race. Convinced me enough to take a flyer on him at good odds.
He paid $17.00. I was there. It was raining all day. Horrible day. Night before I hit a $310.00 late double on a $2.00 ticket at Yonkers via OTB.
