So I have this theory. Eddie was of course way ahead of players, mainly player with his Dad, and those rogue sorts of folks. Now I followed Dwight for a few years until the first live album, which I loved. Eddy was Dwight's first live lead guy on Letterman. Eddy sounded too much like Pete , but did Eddy play those parts and Pete copy them? Pete produced, played I'm aware, and believe it, but Eddy's effort is flawless on the same style way before Pete. We will never know I guess. Eddy Shaver is a huge hero in what I call, Berkeley Honky Tonk. Lol
@@LovinMusic1965 Im a guitar player too I think eddie was holding back his talent. Now if you listen to Vinnie VIncent's solos my god theyre all over the place
Norm Macdonald was here with me in spirit. I could see him smiling and at peace. I only came here after seeing Billy Joe on Norm's show. Totally under rated music. It was perfect and untimely, but just never caught an audience for that age. Such a shame. I'd love to see Billy Joe Shaver with Jesse James Dupree just for one song. I bet they could make musical dynamite. R.I.P. Billy Joe Shaver and Norm Macdonald.
Norm brought me here too. I never even knew about outlaw country before. I just thought country music was lame, fake, and poppy. Now I'm hooked on outlaw country. RIP both of these chunks of coals.
Typical arrogant American thinking. You think Jesus likes the same music as you ? Is that why there's so many starving, dying and sick children in the world because Jesus would rather hang out with dead country musicians than do what he's supposed to be doing ? The stupidity of the religious never fails to astound me.
I just watched "Blaze"....the movie about Blaze Foley......Anyone besides me think Mr. Shaver's life story would make a great movie? I would watch!!!! I love and miss this man so much. He would love these younger fellas coming up and doing the outlaw thing....RIP Billy!!! Hope you and Eddie are playing together again! Gone but never forgotten in my heart!
I don't really even know how to describe what a great picker Eddie was, or what a unique singer Billy Joe was. I hope Heaven has welcomed them for the beauty they gave us.
Billy Joe, if I recall correctly, wrote all the songs for Waylon Jenning's album "Honky Tonk Heroes". (1973 or 74) It sold very well and catapulted Waylon's career. Waylon was excited to make it, for the songs and also because it was the first album that his record label let him use his own (road) band. The results were outstanding and really launched the whole "outlaw" country music thing.
Well said , and so very true. Billy Joe was never taken seriously . He didn’t care about money or fame like the other greedy bastards . He loved writing good music.
Honky Tonk Heroes is one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion, and I mean of any genre. I listen to everything from rock, jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, etc, and I still think Honky Tonk Heroes ranks up there with the best any genre has to offer. Yea, Billy Joe Shaver wrote the songs, but he couldn't seem to stay out of the studio when Waylon was recording. Waylon didn't like that much from what I've read.
Thanks guys for Shari your knowledge about this great guy. Listening to your recollection of his accomplishments is awesome. Thanks again guys. May the lord bless you and your families 👍😉
Saw Billy Joe at a club in San Diego back in '96 when his son Eddy was playing guitar in his band..........talk about the real deal.......Eddy (RIP) one of the best guitarists I've ever seen live. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up (Dickey Betts gave Eddy his first guitar)......go pick up Shavers album, Unshaven Shaver:Live At Smith's Olde Bar.....it's a live masterpiece. Now i'm going to get a beer and a tissue.
Billy Joe Shaver played in every Honky Tonk from Georgia to California. He also wrote some very Good song's that were recorded by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson..Billy Joe will always be a "Honky Tonk Hero" to us that appreciate his music..
I was excited to see Dad and Son . Asked Dad and he sat me down for more than 1 hrs break. Son,Wife and Mom all gone in less than a year. Holes in his Soul. I will never quit admiring Both. Eddy was ridiculously good. Nobody like Eddy Shaver
Just watched Austin city limits with the Shavers. Man can Eddie work his guitar 🎸. I just had to watch a few more times. So sad both in heaven but I bet they're having a blast.
Booked Billy for several years , son Eddie was playing and several guys from Georgia Satellites . Became good friends . RIP ...Leon Springs Cafe and Floores Country Store . Many a dance with my wife . Brother booked him at Brazos Bottom Bar and Grill many fun times and stories oh my........
I saw Billy Joe in concert twice. Once at Waterloo Records on Lamar and once at Hill's Cafe. In both cases I cannot think of another concert where I felt more sure that the artist was performing just for me, and I think everyone else felt the same. Amazing performer.
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT BILLIE JO NEVER HAS BEEN GIVEN THE RECOGNITION THAT HIM AND HIS SON SO GREATLY DESERVE I LOVE THEM BOTH AND HIS SON IS AMAZING HOW AMAZING CAN ONE BE. JUST A 'WONDERFUL HOME OF THEM. HIS SON IS IS A MASTER. BUDDY YOU
Also saw him and Norm on Norm's Netflix show. Watching him here you can just tell he was always full of piss and vinegar and loved life to the fullest. Hope he and Norm are rolling around up there together.
Had the pleasure of meeting BJS and shaking his hand after one of his shows at Floores Country Store in Helotes, Texas. Such a humble and kind man. This song is one of his best.
Still a great song! I been to GA on a fast plane and in a fast car and I still wasn’t born no yesterday. Thankfully the mean ones are few and far between now a days and know what they can do with thier messes, clean them up thier selves.
I just watched last night's ACL on PBS showing classic past show's featuring Billy Joe; and Jerry Jeff Walker... Two amazing " Outlaws " of Country.. RIP 🤠Boys🙏
Forgive me for my incompetence. But that lick that Eddy plays in the middle sounds like the lick that Vince Gil plays on Oklahoma borderline. Does anyone have any background on that lick?
Just the way Billy Looks at his son when he’s shredding. He’s such a proud father 😭
As he should be. Eddy was one hell of a guitar player. He could go toe to toe with the best.
My Dad walked in on me “shredding” once.
My parents divorced shortly after.

There ought to be a movie about all them early 70’s Nashville/ Texas drinking crowds of pickers
You’re still pretty!!!
Thankful to have been entertained by the Shavers, the songs will " live forever "😊❤

Besides enjoying Eddy with his dad several times, I saw him in 1987 on tour with Dwight Yoakam - that was quite cool, Eddy was a heck of a picker
