Thanks for this post Susan. I graduated high school in the 70s and this music was epic, see my main post. I would love to hear your stories about this video your husband and friends made. This may be the first music video of all time 😜. It was a different time, more innocent in spite of our outlaw ways. What a time to be alive, what great music and memories. Viva Terlingua, Viva Texas 😎
My first intro to Jerry Jeff was "Backsliders Wine." "Redneck Mother" sealed the deal. 86-years-old now, haven't forgotten the words, or the good times.
Viva Terlingua is one of most underrated albums of all time largely forgotten except by those that lived it. The two greatest Texas sing-along bar songs of all time on one album. Redneck Mother's & London Homesick Blue's. Sangria Wine, Getting By, Little Bird, Desperados Waiting For a Train, The Wheel. 95 FM Progressive Country radio in Dallas in the 70s played JJW, BW Stevens, Rusty Weir, Michael Murphy, Ray Wiley Hubbard, David Allen Coe, New Riders of PS, Pure Prairie League, and of course Waylon and Willie, all made in Texas. RIP Jerry Jeff Walker, the guy that could drink anyone under the table including himself, what a troubadour. What great music, what a great time to be alive and in Texas. 50s, 60s, and 70s saw the greatest music ever created out of thin air. There will never be another time of spontaneous creativity like it again. Analog Heaven. The friendliest people and that prettiest women you've ever seen 🎶
I am from Manchester, England. I first heard this as a New Riders of the Purple Sage version around 1978. It just stuck with me. Fast forward to 2017 and a bar in Dallas, Texas with two local lads playing a selection of guitars and I heard that intro, you know the one. Total recall. I was up there singing it, a few words changed and missed here and there but they knew I knew. The Lone Star shone brightly that night.
Jerry Jeff one of that army of Texas singers, song writers and guitarists. Sad to say many are gone, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley and lots more. We still have a few left, Steve Earle, Willy Nelson, etc. we should cherish them while they are still here. They are national treasures.
RIP J erry Jeff. I will always remember watching Jerry Jeff at Gruene Hall playing solo guitar and singing for hours on end. He will always be a hero to me
P.S., I also witnessed someone dancing the 'gator' at that VFW. A woman at the next table almost "lost it", she was barking "That's disgusting! They ought to kick him out of here for good." - I'll never forget that.
Ray Wylie Hubbard knocked it out of the park with this song. 20 years ago, this song became the door that lead me from Nashville's idea country music to learning about folks like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Billy Joe Shaver, and of course, the immortal Jerry Jeff. So much heart, soul, and honesty in music that never sees country radio.
I was 9 when I heard this & haven't heard it since. Birthday today & Jerry Jeff's name was brought up, looked it up & sang EVERY WORD! Some things you don't forget even after 52 yrs!! An I'm from Oklahoma...brought a HUGE smile!! Thanks for this
Thanks LT.. That day was a really fun day out in the Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio. It's still also really fun to see that film again and as well to see the 1.5 million who have smiled over the last decade or so.
I just heard a song from when I was 8 or 9, it was 'They're coming to take me away, to the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time', I knew all the words to that too.
Hey loot. Heard it at 15, now 58, still call myself a punk rocker but am singing this song at the top of my lungs with tears running down my cheeks. There is no music anymore. We have to come here to celebrate and mourn
Dang me, RIP Jerry Jeff.. so sorry to have to see you go.... may we all carry on.... glad to have heard about his passing in the comments section of this clip, bless everyone... the end is nigh....
@Jim Fink hey, I remember you! I was in class of '75. Hunter H. posted this on FB and so here I am. So glad you posted this masterpiece! What memories...this is really what it was like in SA in the mid 70's. We grew up in the greatest place in the most fun time there was! Wish I was there now and wish I had found sooner. Great job and thanks for posting. Also your excerpts below from Texas Monthly are wonderful.
While I do like the scene from That 70’s Show with this song. I also like this song bc it was one of my dad’s favorite songs. Remember being 10 and him blaring this while we were driving to his job so he could pick up his check and some dude cutting him off and throwing up the “I do what I want” gesture and dad making the guy pull over so he could throw some fists with him. Dude who cut him off had a “Coexist” and “ Love is the answer” bumper stickers, I still remember my dad saying that he was about to give him a lesson in coexistence by showing him some tough love
One time me and my father and all my friends were in the car drunk and my mother had to come pick us up from the bar and we were all singing this in the car on the way home while my mother just sat there It was in the 70s
@@MrDonttreadonme111. @MrDonttreadonme111, No Sir, he has passed. Last October (2022) Luckenbach, and his fans had a celebration, and put a JJW monument next to Hondo’s . The event was sold out when I tried for tickets. He’s still one of my favorite outlaws.

Although I feel the South, beginning with the moment Johnson’s presidential reconstruction began, has experienced a gradual closure of the aperture of contingencies that could lead to it being a uniquely pride-inducing region for me 😊
My uncle used to sing this song to me since I was born in Oklahoma all the time and it always annoyed me and I would tell him to shut up. This morning I found him dead in his bed. This song will now be one of my favorites and will be on repeat for a while. This man was more like a dad to me. He raised me. Showed me everything I know. R.i.p. Don. I love you so much.
A legend, that is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard. We all have our own taste in music, understable. But Jacky Jack strikes a chord in my soul like Elvis, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, etc. NEVER DID! Of course their all great muscians, but some like JJW hit you in your soul for reasons you cannot explain. That's what makes him so special. He's not the best guitar player, or singer, or greatest looking. But he is absolutely perfect at being Jerry Jeff Walker. That to me is incredible, and why I love him so much. Thank you my friend for being yourself and changing so many lives. A Perfect Genius.
Been a rusted on fan since the 70's....when visited Austin, called into Charlie Dunn's past workplace, but couldn't get to the back of Capital Saddlery,, guess Buck Steiner was long gone, but ordered a pair of custom boots and showed the staff a photo of Jerry Jeff's boots and got a copy sent to me in Australia, where I live. The one time I went to a Jerry Jeff concert I will always remember how drunk he was and music was great. I grew listening to all music. That's was a good thing because I never got bored. Nowadays I listen music on UA-cam with Bluetooth wireless headphones and lately that's all I do since the pandemic and life is great

The one time I went to a Jerry Jeff concert I will always remember how drunk he was and music was great. I grew listening to all music. That's was a good thing because I never got bored. Nowadays I listen music on UA-cam with Bluetooth wireless headphones and lately that's all I do since the pandemic and life is great
This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Ever.
Just saw Hubbard in Tomball TX, legendary show, and let me tell you, his son was amazing, you can tell he's been steeped in his daddy's music! Viva the ol outlaws!
His son isgreat.I saw him in Santa Cruz on stage with dad and the band at Pulucaville?
Thanks for posting that Super-8 footage from 1974, to go with the JJW classic. Hopefully the youngsters in the film are still alive.

Love me some Jerry Jeff. I’m 63. Listened and sang along in Waco and headed to Austin in 1978. Nobody like JJW
Jerry Jeff Walkers best song. I remember when this first came out. This is country music what is supposed to be.
