Most people nowadays are aware of Beetlejuice thanks to the viral TikTok trend. that was a big thing back in 2021. Beetlejuice garnered quite some popularity, with content creators using the lines to do crazy makeup transitions or cosplays. Most people are aware of the movie Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton as the iconic ghost. But today, we are here to talk about the spooky, twisted, and hilarious Emmy award-winning cartoon based on the movie, which was released in the early 90s. Beetlejuice: The Animated Series is a rollercoaster ride that focuses on Beetlejuice and his human best friend, Lydia. So without further ado, let’s embark on our journey through the “Neitherworld,” shall we?

What makes the cartoon version of Beetlejuice more appealing than the movie version is the fact that we're able to see him a lot more on the show, since Beetlejuice only had nine or ten minutes of screen time in the movie, which is ironic considering the movie was actually named after him to begin with.
His time is short in the movie but he steals the movie even with the short time if the sequel ever gets made there probably going to overdose the movie with him.

@@liyon316 The fantasy elements really were interesting! Even though Beetlejuice's screen time was short the movie more than made up for it in other areas of it. So I was never bored from watching it ❤.
I seen the Beetlejuice movie and I seen this cartoon a few times before. I think Lydia and Beetlejuice in the cartoon probably became the inspiration for Luz and Eda for the animated series The Owl House and maybe Molly and Scratch from The Ghost and Molly McGee.

Except for the whole "creepy crush on Lydia" aspect of the show, of course (see his dweeby Will Power inside his mind who maintains his Shrine to Lydia, but has to battle against the hulking manifestation of his prankster side known as Prankenstein).

@@damianprock1650 In the 9os Burton had a sequel script that was about Beetlejuice going tropical with him winning a surfing contest but Burton never loved the script enough to make it and instead went on to do Batman Returns. They have been trying to get a sequel made for decades Johnny was rumored to be on Burton's list to play the sequel villain with Beetlejuice becoming an antihero after the first movie then rumors stopped. Now Brad Pitts's production company wants to do the sequel and they are working on the movie but Burton won't commit to the project unless he feels the script is worth making so it's 5o 5o right now on rather we get a sequel.

I remember Beetlejuice the animated series. Would had been good if Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder returned to voice Beetlejuice and Lydia. Stephen Ouimette does a understanding impersonation of Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.
That would be... interesting. Can't say I'd be completely on board with that idea though as my first Beetlejuice was the cartoon, so Stephen Ouimette is actually my favorite one... I'd be really disappointed at some point if he didn't return or they didn't get a decent enough sound alike to him for the role. I think Alex Brightman would have been a good fit, as his voice has equal qualities from both the cartoon and movie versions but after what happened in the fandom after the musical, I'm not sure he would want to return to the role.
This is such an awesome cartoon! The three episodes you talked about are good choices for this review! I do have an extremely soft spot for "Critter Sitters". Not only does it introduce the dynamic between Beetlejuice and Lyds, it also has a baby (Arlo) that actually isn't annoying! He's literally everything I want in a cartoon baby (unique design, non-screechy voice, actually contributes to the plot).
Now back to Beetlejuice, I do love everything about this show. I love it better than the movie. Jacques Lalean is one of my favorite cartoon characters of all time

Did not know people still cared about this show!! I myself didn’t watch it when I was younger, because I wasn’t even born, but I found out about the show after I got into the musical. Probably my favorite adaption of all the Beetlejuice culture, it was funny, silly, and brightened my mood. Was a constant eye-roll. I really loved the take on Betelgeuse’s and Lydia’s friendship-it was honestly so sweet and they really balanced each other out. I really hope this show makes a comeback/appears on a streaming service like Netflix. It would be AWESOME to see more people get into it!
Overall, magnificent show. I could watch it for years.

Most of the clips were from the same episode for the gross off competition. Hopefully they'll make more marvelous videos on Mr. Beetleman because the guy has a rouges gallery and one one talks about it!

Yeah... it's a friendship. Somewhat. Idk. On surface level, I agree. But as someone who was a little girl when this cartoon was on TV, well... I was four years old when I used to watch this come on Cartoon Network at my grandma's house and even then, I watched these two and thought "they're like a prince and princess from a fairytale". I seriously wanted to be Lydia from this cartoon and wanted a guy to someday treat me like Beetlejuice treated her. So even then, I realized the very thing that many fans of the musical seem not to like about this cartoon... and having written this comment, I'm now having flashbacks of watching the fandom go up in flames... Don't get me wrong, I mean... As a four year old, I had a hard time telling age on everyone so I thought Lydia was just a short adult (and believe me you, there's a lot of short adults where I grew up) so I never shipped the "canon" pairing here... and when I rediscovered the cartoon online when I started college back in around 2013 or so, I still preferred an AU where Lydia was a grown woman because the dynamic between cartoon Beetlejuice and Lydia is just super cute but from my experience growing up watching the cartoon, definitely has some undertones that are understandably "not meant for" Lydia as she is canonically. That said, if we did get another Beetlejuice cartoon, I would like to keep this dynamic but have Lydia be older, preferably an adult. That's why I'm hoping Suzthesnooze and her team can get a reboot off the ground. Her reboot AU keeps the dynamic in place (but Lydia being an adult also opens a door for some adult humor too) and introduces some really adorable new characters. Ivy and Pollux have been my favorites of hers so far. ^^
Alternatively though, I would also be okay with getting a straight-up reboot as long as Suz and her team can still finish up on the one for the show's original wave of fans, too.

And I’m sorry, you’re comment is confusing me a bunch. You’re jumping on to different topics each couple of sentences, and it’s hard to understand. Hears what i’m grasping onto:
You like the ship Beetlebabes in some way, and you wanted a guy like Betelgeuse to treat you the way he did to Lydia in the show. Which is, sweet, in a way, because their dynamic is literally one of the most adorable things I have ever seen, but mind you, Betelgeuse is a bit obsessive. And, well, needy. But that doesn’t matter.
I have to ask what you mean by “I realized the very thing that many fans of the musical seem not to like about this cartoon…” You never explained what you meant by that, I can kind of assume (whole betelbabes dealie), but I wish you were more specific.
I also get your whole point about Lydia just being a short adult, it makes sense in your case because thats who you grew up around, plus you were a kid and the 2 really clicked. It’s makes sense, as I said, and I totally get it. You were young, didn’t realize how young Lydia was, and how wrong it actually is. (In the sense of child x adult)
I totally agree, they would make a super awesome couple. They are 2 peas in a pod, best friends, and amazing dynamic. That’s why I like the adult AUs. It applies all that amazing shit and makes it work. And it’s great! And why I enjoy Suzthesnooze’s AU from what I see (I found thr, on Reddit though the Beetlejuice subreddit, love their work. Wanna dive more into it!). It’s great, imo.
It would be lovely to see a reboot made by them. Would love it and see what they can put down for it.

@@QuantumLeapEnthusiast89 Well it sounds to me like you actually fully understood what I was getting at though despite the bits where I was bit vague. I was vague in parts on purpose because I didn't want to upset anyone if I'm being honest.
It might seem like I was jumping around but I wrote everything that came into my mind. Nothing was skipped. I'd say I could have been more brief but I'm always afraid that if I'm too brief and don't try to explain things that I'll end up just making others upset in some way.
As for my comment seeming to you like it had nothing to do with your comment, you can believe me when I tell you that it was reading your comment that got me started thinking about all of the things I mentioned. It made me start thinking of all of that stuff because of the way that you described the dynamic between Beetlejuice and Lydia in the series, summing it up as simply a friendship and like I said earlier, I agree with that up to a point. I just felt like putting a label on their dynamic like that was kind of ignoring the blatant undertones in the show and I suppose my ensuing thought processes about that became a bit overwhelming to read, especially since I now realize that I accidentally forgot to state that I wasn't so sure it could be summed up with any one word or phrase.

Not completely forgotten as those that did watch the cartoon will remember it. Hell, even I still remember the show.
So looking back, I guess I had been a little smitten with Lydia. Maybe that's where my interest in the "strange and unusual" comes from.

Still the Ghost with the most! Beetlejuice is ridiculously funny and perhaps the 1st cartoon to truly introduce grossout humor! Its still an awesome cartoon even 20+ years later! Shockingly, its the only cartoon to air on 2 stations during its original airtime! ABC for new episodes and even Fox for reruns!!!

They had to tone down some things for the tv series, but BJ never had a problem with showing his bastard side if the situation called for it.
If it went too far (sensual innuendo, notwithstanding ["Oh Betelgeuse, if we can't be together this summer, I think I'll scream." "Scream anyway Babes, I like having that effect on people." / "Last time we spent a vacation together, my parents almost got beheaded." "So, what's your point?" "We agreed then that, sometimes, we'd have to be apart." "Great! I'll be apart first." ~shatters into pieces, then reforms himself~ "You know what I mean." "But Babes, we're a team! I can't live without you! Oh, wait a minute, I'm already dead, so no problem!" / ~snorts~ "Here I thought you had better taste in dead guys." / "Hey Squirt, caught your girlfriend's act at the club." & several other memorable questionable shippy scenes]), Betelgeuse (and Lydia) would be sent to Neither-Neither Land aka a saccharine concentration camp for delinquent ghouls that turns its troublemaking victims into rule-abiding, well-mannered citizens, seeing as how the B-guy is constantly send to the sandworms on a regular basis for his mischief.

I LOVED the animated series, I watched it constantly as a child. My aunt hated me watching this, no wonder I was an alternative teenager, I was primed
ROFL I had a similar situation! I was four years old at the time this was still on the air and my mom made it a house rule that I wasn't allowed to watch this because she was afraid it would scare me (I scared easily back then). So I would often wait to watch it when mom would drop me off at grandma's house because grandma didn't pay attention to what I watched as long as it was animated... next thing my mom knows, her four year old daughter is BEGGING to be Lydia for Halloween and she has no idea who this "Lydia" even is... Fast forward a decade and I became a teen who was into some alt stuff as well. haha X,D My mom wasn't against that though. In fact, she tried to help me get more access to the things I liked then because she remembered she was once a "mod" teen herself (I guess that's what they called it when she was young). I'll never forget how hard it was to wait to watch this cartoon, though.

You should do one on Back to the Future Animated Series. It was brilliant, had a live action Doc Brown at the beginning and end and features Bill Nye the Science Guy at the end as well. I could go more in-depth, but I would rather see what you uncover on your analysis.

I love watching Beetlejuice since I was a kid and I was still do now I have to make a new series and a movie.

Another comment on this video... I'm not wholly certain Lydia's interest in Prince Vince was romantic from the start, either. It's a little obvious at least to me from the start that the romance on that one mainly comes from him and not Lydia. Yes, she does agree to go out with him a few times but she doesn't necessarily let on that it's due to romantic feelings. In fact, the only one we see actually hoping for "something more" during that period is Prince Vince. Meanwhile, Beetlejuice starts to get eaten up by jealousy, which is arguably also something that some people might experience when they feel in love with someone or extremely close to someone who is now giving some of their time to someone or something else. Lydia however was not particularly showing a deeper interest during that time frame at all. Actually, I'm not even certain she outwardly shows a deeper interest for most of the series beyond any possible hints that may be made much more subtly (and which could also have different interpretations to their meanings) such as her relief when Beej rescues her from Bully or her enthusiasm when it comes to playing a sidekick role to Beej's "hero" roles (example: the Vincent Van Gogh themed episode "Ears To You", where I believe Lydia seemed kind of excited to be Beej's "gal Friday". Idk, it's been a while since I rewatched!). Her feelings are usually no more clear than that, which is pretty open ended.
But she definitely notices Beej's more obvious emotions/feelings more than he himself does and in one episode, uses that to her advantage by dressing up in a "disguise" to fool Beej into getting himself impeached in "Mr. Beetlejuice Goes To Town".
On a different note, I've just realized that I'm really overdue for a rewatch of my favorite cartoon. I've got an original edition of the DVD box set so I'm gonna go watch that for a while...

The unofficial theory is that animated Beetlejuice is actually Eddy from Ed Edd N Eddy. He grows up, stays the same character he's always been, and somehow meets his death-- thus becoming Beetlejuice.

Following the major critical and commercial success of the Beetlejuice film in early 1988, it led to an animated spin-off series being created by Warner Bros. Television. The production was provided by the Canadian Nelvana Ltd., The Geffen Film Company and Tim Burton, Inc. The show premiered on September 9, 1989 on ABC, the tail end of the 80's. It ran on ABC on its last episode on October 26, 1991, reruns continued until September 5, 1992. The show was later picked up by Fox (This was the after school slot from Mon-Fri) with new episodes from September 9, 1991 to December 6, 1991, with reruns from December 10, 1991 to September 10, 1993.
The animated series was a mega breakout hit for ABC in its initial seasons, and became one of the first cartoon animated series to ever air on Fox's Fox Kids Network weekday afternoons children's lineup. This led to a situation where Beetlejuice was being seen Monday to Friday on Fox, though while also still remaining on ABC's Saturday morning schedules at the same time, making it one of the first animated shows in American television history to be aired concurrently on two different U.S. broadcast networks. So for 8 weeks starting on September 7, 1991, viewers could see 6 new episodes. ABC continued their 3rd season season with repeats, but Fox Kids rolled out all 65. Beetlejuice has aired in re-runs on Fox Kids (the entire show of all 94 episodes), Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network (where the movie was a frequent presence), Boomerang, The WB 100+ Station Group, and aired on Warner Bros. and AOL's new broadband internet channel Toontopia TV. The show aired on Teletoon Retro in Canada from fall 2009 to June 2011, but came back 2 years later in April 2013.
There are three different opening introductions. The first one aired on ABC, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and in syndication, with alternate animation, starting with Beetlejuice producing stripes on his clothes. The second one is used on FOX, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, The WB 100+ Station Group, and in syndication, which is the current one they used today in the United States, and is more popular and it's favorite, it features newer animation, starting with Beetlejuice escaping from his grave as a corpse. The third one is used when FOX re-ran Beetlejuice, this one re-edits clips from the second introduction and clips from various episodes, with the entire sequence playing over a short and edited version of the show's theme music.

oh god, how I love this serie
Being 7, 8 yo I loved this show. Enjoyed it even in my teens. Watched the movie finally in my 20's and later was amazed by the musical! Not sure about a sequel. There were failed plans to bring back BJ in another movie since decades and I don't think, it could actually work out. Beetlejuice always works the best, when you start from scratch: When Burton took over the project back in the 80's he was still innovative and non formulaic. The cartoon works so well, because the creators created an alternative universe where Lydia is 3 years younger than in the movie and BJ some kind of not so imaginary magic childhood friend. The musical worked, since the writers and composers started out bold, not relying too heavy on the source material, reinventing the characters and throwing off any bargian from the plot

When I was very young, I didn't know it was based on a live-action movie of the same name by Tim Burton.
I remember this cartoon it came on after The Real Ghostbusters. I was too creeped out by his tongue.
Might've been cool to see a crossover movie of these famous shows, just like the did with Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Plus, Scooby-Doo and Courage the cowardly dog.
