Count Duckula Origins - The Most Hilarious Yet Terrifying Duck Vampire In Cartoon History!

- You might not have expected cartoons about vampire ducks to be so popular, but after learning about 1979's short-lived Count Duckula from The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle, you'll probably change your mind. Danger Mouse, another amusing cartoon by Cosgrove Hall Films, inspired Count Duckula. Duckula was a completely different recurrent evil character in that program, but he would receive a drastic shift in his own show. He's still a vamp duck looking for popularity in show biz, but a tomato ketchup infusion eradicated his evil character and urge to suck blood. Geraldine Laybourne, who ran Nickelodeon for most of the 1980s and 1990s, wanted the channel to have another program by Cosgrove Hall Films. Count Duckula had piqued her interest, and the rest is now history.
Credits - In our video around 3:52 mark, we have used an amazing reimagined intro clip from our friend's channel George Edwards, he has some amazing stuff on his channel, definitely check him out here - • Count Duckula Reimagined - Розваги
This was one of my favorite shows back in the old days of Nickelodeon.
Early 90s with Danger Mouse and the Pink Panther. British toon invasion
The thing I find most interesting was that Duckula translated so well across the Atlantic as I remember it as having typically British sensibilities.
But even today, over 30 years later, if someone knocks at the door I'll often call out "I'll get eeet!" in my best/worst Nanny impression. 😁
Best part of Nanny impressions?
It's impossible to screw up. Either it's so bad you lean into it and it becoems amazing, or it's so amazing it's terrible and thus awesome.
"Oi'll GEET EEEEET!'
I was obsessed with this cartoon when I was a kid!
I'm from Mexico, and back in the early 90s you could see a lot of buses with Duckula stickers
My grandma RIP bought me the first issue of the comic series in 88. I loved that book. It was funny and occasionally watched the series. Underrated.
I'm glad you're keeping these gems alive. 😊
I used to watch this all the time when I was little. Does anyone out there remember Danger Mouse, Pinwheel, or David the Gnome?
I've also got Grims Fairytale Classics, Mighty Max, Mr Potato Head, & Maya The Bee in my obscure childhood pantheon.
I definitely remember Danger Mouse, one of my favorites on early Nickelodeon. I also remember Pinwheel and Hocus Focus - this one showed cartoons at night which for me was revolutionary. I also remember Banana Man which was shown right after Danger Mouse. The thing about Danger Mouse I liked was its dialogue and its humor that was often outside of anything American. The one episode with Danger Mouse and the Dragon used a Welsh joke that I didn't get until I saw the movie "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain" it relates to last names and Wales tenancy to be short on last names.
I'm over 40 now, and had Nick almost from the beginning, so I remember all of these (It was Dangermouse that first turned me on to Britcoms).
I also remember some of the early Anime they had via France, like Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea and The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Oh and The Little Prince and The Adventures of Belle and Sebastian.
@@sojoboscribe1342 Yes, they had a number of anime show on the channel.
the pinwheel theme lives rent free in my head.
Duckula's voice reminds me of Daffy & Plucky Duck.
I can remember watching this when it was on Nick and I was so young, but the only thing I remember about it is the end credits sequence: hellish red background with screaming women and bone-jangling skeletons. And then if you werent creeped out enough, they throw in that Thames bumper on top of it with the creepy reflection of London with the spooky horns that played over it 😆
One of my favourites!!!! So so awesome 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆💯💯
When I was a kid I was hook on Danger Mouse and Count Duckula ( especially Count Duckula ). The most funniest characters in Duckula was the 2 bats in the clock.
I'm still a fan 😂🥰💞
I loved this as a kid. The theme song is still dope!!!
i have fond memories of this show and always found dude's butler to be such a buzzkill. Yet so very relateable nagging over being 'normal.' When dude just wanted to be himself.
Also loved the touch that the less vampiric in nature he was the fewer of their weaknesses he had and those times he actually was 'traditionally' vampiric, he had those same issues.
This takes me back
Igor just looks so done with it all.
I remember this as a child. Was awesome and ridiculous
Hearing that prelude by THAMES TELEVISION will forever be recorded in my earliest of memories.
You can hear all the graphic renditions here:

I always like the intro song to this show this show and Danger Mouse.
I remember reading the Marvel comic which included a Danger Mouse adventure towards the end of every issue. And one particular story featured a parody of Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Count Duckula is basically an adult single male Powerpuff Girl.
Oh damn! you used my animation!
I never knew you could do a video of this hilarious vampire Duck
Better than Twilight and this is before Twilight!
Amazing am I right?
You revisit some shows and realize they weren’t as good as you remembered, with Duckula it’s actually the opposite, as a lot of the more risqué jokes can be appreciated as an adult
One of my childhood favorites!
Do a video on the Groovy Ghoulies
There were rumours that Aardman Animations (Wallace and Gromit) were going to make a Count Duckula Movie. But again, these are just rumours as this never came to light
One of my favourite from the old days 😂👍
Nick at Nite Origins Nickelodeon's Longest Running Programming Block that was huge during the 1990's - Early 2010's
The fourth episode is what I remember most from my childhood & still do today.
Ok that's a nice show Wait until disney lawyers will hear about this one
Just one thing. I'm fairly sure Duckula's Egyptologist ancestor was the Archduck Merganser, not Merganza. A Merganser IS a kind of duck (it a smallish genus mostly found in North America (with a few Asian ones and an extinct flightless version from Auckland Island, New Zealand), noted for having long "toothed" bills for catching fish.
Best fucking show
The original vampire duck was named Quacula.
love this and danger mouse
I love that cartoon!
I've still got my Count Duckula from the 80s!
Hi remember this ,I've always loved count duckula
Count Duckula came out in the late 80s probably 1988 the sane year as The Raccoons when it comes to 80s cartoons is that Count Duckula premiered on Nickelodeon although it was released on DVD in region 1 but it was long out of print
Fun fact: Stone Roses guitarist John Squire and New Order frontman Bernard Sumner used to work as animators at Cosgrove Hall
You can almost hear the theme song.
No need to run...he's a vegetarian!
I believe that the name of the distributor; Thames, is pronounced "TEMS". (As in the river Thames in London.)
Man, I remember this lol.
Vampire duck
If only the complete series would be remastered n released on dvd/blu-ray. I miss this series n danger mouse :(
We need danger mouse
Apparently Count Duckula has crossed paths with The Doctor. Where else would Castle Duckula get hold of a chameleon circuit?
Zulu swashbuckler.
Oh shite this was my cartoon back in the day🗣‼️🤗
What terrifying about him ? Uga bunga!
Nanny was the best
Are you sure Count Duckula isn’t a cousin of Daffy Duck? Or just Daffy just playing the part of Duckula?
Manga oriented? What do you mean?
First do a super drags video
I always enjoyed Count Duckula more than Danger Mouse .
