Thank you for the up front review right at the start of your video. Too many people today make you sit through 30min of video to say, yeah its ok or, nope dont buy. I came for the short answer, but stayed for the long all because of this approach in you vid. Thank you thank you!
Seems like if you use one water soluble paint over another water soluble paint especially if you add additional water to it, the new layer is going to loosen up the underlying layer. So in between you would want to spray on a non water soluble clear coat, or, the new layer needs to be a different kind of paint, alcohol based or solvent based perhaps.
WOW! Very impressive, the Dragon looks stunning!!! Thanks for all the information about these particular paints, the way you've have applied them gives amazing contrast.
I just started painting as a newbie. I have a 7" resin statue of Tyrande Whisperwind I have begun painting. I really like some of the speedpaints. Plasmatic Bolt is awesome. I did 2 coats for her hair and the color just really pops. I tested purple alchemy but it was going to be too dark for her skin. I was able to use it for the recesses of her ears and brushed pixie pink over the ridges to blend it. Really worked well. I think Purple Alchemy would have been a good color to include in this set. Maybe Plasmatic Bolt too.
@@DanaHowl Hmmm... I actually didn't know this at all... pretty new to it all... Is it an airbrush thing, or in general with painting minis? And... from your answer, it could seem like it's always the "opposite" color on the spectrum... is it really that easy to remember?
I love these videos. I recently decided to get into this hobby an in what I will describe as an over zealous purchase. Dana: Are Speedpaint as good as Contrast for half the price? The short answer is : yes. The long answer is: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
I've seen Green for undercoat for copper, red for undercoat of gold, blue or black as undercoat for iron, and pink as an undercoat for yellow, but this is new to me
Thanks for another great video on these paints. The more I see these paints in action the more I want to use them right away. The price is also one of the big factors these paints have going for them.
Instead of doing 2 layers of white ink then varnish, I've found that mixing white ink with matte medium makes it robust enough to paint on top of with a brush. I've done this with Liquitex white ink and Army Painter matte medium.
Watching this video reminded me that I ordered a bunch paints recomended in a past video. Also, l hadn't check my snail mail in weeks. I can"t wait to order these Speed Paints... ah the cycle countinues..
Do it. Buy a simple starter set, you'll have a blast. Yes there will be hurdles and you don't need to be the best but the airbrush is a very versatile tool.
I'm subscribed to a lot of hobby channels, but yours is the only one that I immediately drop everything for and click as soon as I see a notification pop up. I don't even use your style of painting and I'm more of a 40K fan than an AoS one (still pissed at WFB being flushed down the toilet), but I just think your stuff is phenomenal and extremely well put together. I'm starting a soulblight gravelords army and I'll try to use the techniques you teach. Thanks a lot for everything and cheers from Montreal!
Subbed. Just started to paint minis. Been mostly a conflict simulation board gamer. Played D&D last century, 80's(?). Was planning on doing some wilderness adventures back then. Wish I had more of the Ral Partha minis. 'One does not live by cardboard alone.'
I'm new to Warhammer 40k and to painting (lost any knowledge I had from my school years sadly). With this video, it has given me some ideas for the chapter I plan on painting one day, even though it'll be with AP's normal line. Thank you a lot for this!
Yeah I had the reactivation issue with lower layers after applying another paint even after leaving it, but I worked around it by matt varnishing before adding anymore colours on top =)
my friend has the same problem, but he's living in a humid environment. I guess it's bad luck for miniature painting. I never experienced this problem, and I wait like 20 hours before each layer
none lol, but like anything you should always test it for yourself because mileage may vary among different people. i’ve thinned my contrast paints (from different brands, GW, warcolurs, scale75) with airbrush thinner, water, the stuff army painter makes for their washes, contrast medium from GW. usually, i stick to water and thinner because it’s more readily available to me and cheaper, but also because it gives me the effects i need the most: THE POINT IS: you know what you need and you’ll know by testing it yourself, for the most part though there isn’t much of an argument imo for not using anything that isn’t some harsh chemical to thin these paints
I've seen another video (I forget the channel) testing these paints with liquitex matte medium, army painter quickshade wash medium, contrast medium and lahmian medium. Liquitex was... ok. Lahmian gave a kinda grainy result that wasn't ideal, but the quickshade medium and contrast medium both worked great.
Thanks for the review! I'm a bit curious whenever contrast is used through an airbrush as to why, and I've never heard it explained plainly. Since its unique selling point is its wash-like tendency to run into recesses while still coloring surfaces, and you're not really getting use out of that when applying smooth, even layers through an airbrush, why not just use inks? I'm sure there's a good reason, but like I said, I've never heard anybody explain it.
Contrasts are great through the airbrush because in addition to being like a wash, they are transparent. This makes 'em really good at creating interesting layering effects.
@@krulla but inks are also transparent, same with acrylics in general if you thin them properly... but inks are sometimes a lot easier :D Agree with OP, looks like an expensive way to paint transparently. Not super familiar with contrast, maybe very good pigments in them?
@@spacechannelfiver Inks are great too, but there is something about contrast paints that makes them extremely nice to airbrush and gives fabulous results - at least for me. I don't really understand what makes them so great through an airbrush, and I was extremely skeptical myself, but there is definitely something there. So yeah, I recommend trying it. Or don't, if you like the way you do things currently! Contrast certainly aren't cheap, and I'm looking forward to trying the Army Painter line Dana uses in this video.

As I mostly paint with scale colors I'm very interested in their speed paints. Maybe they'll send you some samples for comparison? I really would love to see GW, Army Painter and Scale Color compared in one video.
Speedpaints seem like an expensive thing to airbrush, why not use inks? I don't think the speedpaints do their intended task (get into the creases) when airbrushed it seems, hence why you had to go back with a brush to get that result.
I'm new to your channel, 1:39 - I'm primarily a large figure scale painter (statue) and have never heard green as a base for red before? I'll have to try it, but can you explain more about that. In my circles we use Tamiya silver as a base for red or yellow top color.
I think its more color theory thing. In the shadow of the color you will see hints of its complementary color, hence green to red will gives you more vibrant shadows.
Green is the complimentary colour to red, which results in brown. So priming brown would make more sense. Also, yellow on top of green? In this case, I'd go for a pink undercoat.
