  • As New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to galvanize the left (and frustrate the right), what’s driving her unique appeal has become an increasingly compelling question. Is it her identity or her substantive politics? Or both?
Ocasio-Cortez's embrace of democratic socialism has been emphasized by the right, which seeks to paint her as out of touch with mainstream American values. But arguably, it's her progressive ideals that provide the basis for a human-centered politics that connect with a majority of Americans.
The Intercept's Senior Politics Editor Briahna Gray will talk to Ocasio-Cortez about identity, the race/class divide, and how these factors are likely to play out in the years ahead.

Sad to see so many in the comments have lost freedom of thought to the special interests she mentioned pitching us against one another. Instead of attacking other people, if you truly disagree with a person's politics, throw out alternatives to those policies you disagree with. There's nothing productive about calling an accomplished Congresswoman at 29 "stupid," and saying nothing she is proposing will work without 1. elaborating on which policies you mean and 2. supporting that view with real evidence is also politically divisive and won't contribute to any conversation.

    • @ForeverBennett

I think she's an idiot. Why? Because her math is fuzzy and has been consistently debunked, Anderson Cooper even pulled her up on that. She has no realistic way of paying for all the "free stuff" she wants. I don't believe she's really studied or even respects the Constitution, she couldn't even name the three branches of government correctly. She makes brazen claims like "unemployment's low because everyone has two jobs", that's not true, and "The world is going to end in 12 years" which is really not a very responsible or even accurate thing to say. She likened Ben Shapiro's respectful debate challenge to catcalling. She didn't have to accept his challenge of course, it's her right to decline, but likening it to catcalling was utterly pathetic. She doesn't seem to understand the concept of a tax cut and proudly boasts about killing Amazon's new development which would have created 25,000 new good paying jobs for the city. Do I think the rich should pay more? Yes, I think the federal income tax for the top ppl can be raised a bit, but not to the amount her and Bernie are talking about because that will just run everyone out of town and the economy will stall. So lets say we bump it up that tax rate a bit, it's currently sitting at 37%, Clinton had it at 40% and things were good, so lets say we try a little over 40, maybe 45% tops? I think putting a tax on wall street speculation like Bernie suggested could work. How about looking for new forms of revenue? I think sports betting should be legalized nationwide. Did you know when Jesse Ventura was Governor of Minnesota, he said underground sports betting netted around 20 to 30 billion annually in his state alone. Now imagine if you did that nationwide? You that would generate HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars. Legalize prostitution too. Lift the embargo on Cuba and get trade happening post haste, let Americans visit the island from their own shores rather than going via Canada or Mexico, that'd generate a nice little sum just for Florida alone. You add all that up alone and I reckon you'd be close to a trillion dollars. I know there are some things I could agree with her on, but overall she's too left-wing and clueless. I have more respect for Bernie who can defend his hard left positions and is happy to debate anyone, whereas she couldn't debate a corpse. That's my two cents and I hope I've been more constructive and articulate than some of her other critics.

I don't think she's stupid, but she's incredibly and painfully naive to the point of arrogant. Her naivete is sadly on display because of her mouth and weird fame. Congress, especially the House, is about collaboration and consensus, not lone wolves being media attention whores. By all accounts, she works well with only a select few others, and even has disregarded authority because she somehow thinks she's entitled to do so. Her accomplishments in getting there should be applauded with pause (her comments about Crowley of late are really shitty), but now that she's there, she better learn that she's one of 435.

    • @jadondrew1445
      @jadondrew1445 5 років тому +12

@@ForeverBennett okay, you do make a point that she is fuzzy on numbers but overall I agree with her concepts. Use our country's great wealth to fund the problems our citizens are having at home, not subsidising the wealthy and funding unnecessary wars. What is a fact is even in a time of great economic growth is that the wealth gap continues increasing. I think most people should be able to support the idea that the wealth gap should be decreasing, not increasing. Even if people working two jobs isn't the primary reason that unemployment is low, it's still a reality our workers our facing. I've seen too many stories of single parents having to work two jobs just to support their kids with no guranteed workers protection. I know people in my own life that are trying to get a second job to try to pull themselves out of their own situation. The truth about trickle down economics is that it's completely debunked. 80% of the gain in profits went towards stock buybacks, that, while increasing the stock market, immensely increased personal wealth. And the Amazon center is not a simple as you make it seem. She's NOT the reason they didn't built the facility. It was due to local opposition to the project that they simply could not continue construction. 1. People were mad their tax dollars were subsidising the project 2. The jobs created caused concern of long term gentrification of the neighborhood. Aka, with the people coming in to take the jobs, locals could no longer afford to live their and send their kids to school there, etc. Nothing is as straightforward as it seems. You detailed the challenges of her social programs but glossed over WHY locals opposed the Amazon project. Also I don't agree with how she handled Ben Shapiro if what you said is true, but I have no respect for Ben. He doesn't even recognize severe threat of climate change, and his debating style but lack of content in his thoughts makes it clear he is a pseudo-intellectual. But overall, I definitely don't agree she is an idiot, she also has an astounding way to rally support, but she could handle herself differently sometimes.

Because, not all creativity needs to be bonded by wage, and I think that one of the reasons that this ideology or question of whether you want to call it ‘democratic socialism,’ or ‘techno-futurism,’ or whatever it is, it is because our technological advancement as a society has outpaced our system for handling finite resources, because now we are approaching infinite resources.”

Hoping she will be eradicated from politics. Socialism stifles motivation, innovation and inspiration. It has been tried and failed miserably. How many times do we have to see that the 'hand out' mentality is not good and ultimately harms people. No one is being 'left to die'. Most of her sweeping rash generalizations leave her wide open to criticism. But wait, she really does not have to be correct as long as she sets herself on some moral high ground. It might not look like a check, more so huuuuuuuge tax breaks. I.e. Warren Buffett paying 11% capital gains tax and his secretary paying >30%. So reallly how much is that couple hundred dollar check to a poor family harming you in comparison to the billions and billions of dollars withheld by the rich and powerful.

that's why americans usually don't go on strike. some unions still exist and do their jobs, but it's few and far between. the west virginia teacher strike, for example, started without help from the union, and the union tried to end the strike by settling on demands that wouldn't even have kept up with inflation. the whole anti-socialism garbage is also used to make union membership seem suspicious, along with corporate introduction videos for new employees that explicitly shit on unions. police brutality does the rest.

Have you ever seen a hand-written appointment ledger at a doctor's office? It's amazing anything ever got done at all before computers. The same technology that makes productivity skyrocket depresses the value of labor. Why? Because more productivity per worker means that you need fewer workers for the same amount of work. If I need to offload goods from a truck, and I have a liftgate and a pallet jack, I can now do a job alone that would have taken four people to do by hand. Now I can offer my services cheaper than the competition, and any store that uses my services can undercut their competition with the savings. Soon, there isn't anyone that does it by hand with four workers. This is common sense.
What is also common sense, is that if you flood the labor market with people who have no trade or technical skills, I can hire them at any wage instead of the people who are demanding higher wages, and have them operating my trucks instead of the old crews. But I don't want to be a scumbag so I pay my workers more, then I go out of business because my competition is illegally paying its workers $10/hour while I'm paying $20/hour, and their prices are much cheaper. The labor movement did finally beat management, but it wasn't through strikes. Those workers were beaten up by the Pinkertons, fired and replaced. It was by controlling the labor market through immigration restrictions.

She fought against corporate welfare in the Amazon deal. Google came to NYC , as well as face book and neither one asked the city and state for billions in tax breaks. This is a company that paid zero federal taxes on $11.2 billion in profits, and I am pretty sure still received a tax payer funded federal tax return. So give them billions in tax breaks so that they can bring in 25,000 jobs to people whom aren't guaranteed to reside in NYC, or NY state? A company whose mere presence will undoubtedly be a drain on the local public infrastructure and resources (schools, roads, subways, buses, commuter rail, emergency services.......), and their huge tax break doesn't negate the fact that the tax payer will still have to fund these services. Also, the other jobs that will come will be b.s. low wage jobs that they contract out (cleaners, security personnel, cafeteria personnel, and a ton of low paid skilled temp jobs). This is nonsense. Its amazing how working class folks will worship the ideals, and the positions of the ruling class to their own detriment time and again. It's sad. Turn FOX off. A small irony here is that AOC's policies are internationally centrist or moderate, it is the United States herself which sits to the right.
Negotiations with the TPP saw many US proposals being voted against 11-1 again and again.
It is the US which is out of step with the rest of the world, not the other way around.
Every other OECD country has some form of universal healthcare, which is labelled in the US as socialism. It is referred to in those countries not as socialism, but as normal. As a common sense solution. Supported by the left and right in Australia, UK, France, Germany, New Zealand and more - a long long list.

@Tony Stark I'm glad you mentioned MRIs. I had one on Feb 27 this year. I made an appointment in the middle of Feb, about 2 weeks prior at a mutually agreeable time. The waiting list was 10 days - and yes, that was in a country with universal healthcare.
I've had longer waits in the US (I've lived in several countries).
What really sucks is for those in the US who must wait until they can afford the treatment. Which is why about 1/3 of go fund me are for medical related issues. What sucks in the US is that 20% of prescriptions are not fulfilled because of cost. What sucks is that the US already spends 18% of GDP on healthcare.
It's just selfish schmucks who attack universal healthcare as if it leads to some modern form of USSR or Guatemala. It hasn't in every single OECD country, the US is the only OECD country that doesn't have some form of universal healthcare.

@MG Every major breakthrough? Ha. Last time I was in a US hospital I saw electronics from the Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand! So I started looking for US made, and eventually found some.
While the US has more than its fair share of medical breakthroughs, it is well less than half according to the research I have read. One of the reasons it does so well is that the US federal government pumps billions into research, both in the form of cash and tax breaks. (Socialist research?)
The absolute majority of these countries are not moving to or wanting to move to the US. Why would they want to give up greater human freedom (ref Cato institute) or stronger democracy (ref EIU).

Universal healthcare has been around for a long time, and has not led to any OECD country collapsing. Countries like New Zealand, UK and Australia have had universal healthcare for 70 plus years.
The majority of medical research and breakthroughs are not in the US. Again, the US has more than its fair share, but your notion that more than 50% is, with respect, completely daft. I suppose it is a form of American exceptionalism.
You are deflecting the major issues the US has by not having universal healthcare.
Russia, like the US has compromised democracy. (Ref. EIU democracy report 2018). Both countries do not have a full democracy.
Germany's economic well-being (and other European countries) is just fine, no doubt will continue thrive because of their new immigrants.

great conversation. I think it was poignant for AOC to mention how the most intergenerational wealth is land and house ownership. I therefore think in trying to think of either social programs or reparations or any ideas that we do not just talk about money, but we talk about opportunity. If the green new deal or other well though programs create more opportunity and home ownership and upliftment of historically oppressed and marginalized people, than something called reperations which gives just cash to certain people. I think the prior is more repairing. To help repair and make up for past harms we have to look at the substance of what is being proposed. Also AOC does mention how we have to go beyond caring about just ourselves and what will make us more united and understanding how we are intertwined. I therefore think that we should use the names of the programs carefully and we can use the word reperations within the green new deal, if aspects of it is targeted toward repairing communities that have been hurt historically.

I wish I could vote for such a political pearl in my own country (Belgium). The whole world is desperately in need of such great people to get us out of this populist hole we fell so easily into (America, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, India, the list is so depressing). So, America, get this woman in the highest political office as soon as possible. One day you will be leading the world not with military force, but with ground-breaking social and environmental evolution. That's the real way to make America great again.

She is Limited to being a Vice President or President by age (they must be at least 35 Years old). I look forward to 2024, when she might actually run, IF they let her. I know I would follow her.

It's hard to believe now but I when I was a college student in the mid-70s, the major prediction was that by the end of the 20th Century, we would have so much leisure time what with all the technological advancements and productivity increases that we wouldn't know what to do with all that free time and universities were actually receiving grants to research this "major issue". As we all know, the end of the century has come and gone and that prediction missed the target. Because real wages did not keep up with inflation, we are working longer hours now just to survive.

She used adequate words in my opinion. The background she gave to the questions made them more substantive and also made the panel more conversational. I suspect that was the plan. As a media producer, I think this is a brilliant approach for presenting to a live audience. As an individual, I really appreciate the interviewer's preparedness, eloquence, and clarity.

When we went to the Moon, we did not ASK about COST. But the HUGH Technologies that came out of going to the Moon, made possible enormous NEW inventions. I remember when hand held Calculators came out and I was amazed, the digital wrist watches, computers and on and on. It immediately had the high tech boom that brought us into the 20th Century. What is to say what will propel us forward for decades to come? Automation does not NEED to be a displacement of workers and jobs, it could again propel us into a new vibrant era of society.

AOC's vision is so clear & on target. she exemplifies who we are becoming - amounting to a spiritual evolution worldwide, when humans care, not just about ourselves or our own little group, but about the community in which we live, i.e. everyone on this small planet. This is why she can say we must Find a candidate we believe in and Vote for that person. Not just vote for the person we think will win. she says: that person WON'T win. we are changing, it's quite exhilarating. she has two feet on the ground, a superior intelligence, and a magnificent beautiful vibration. She says she doesn't really think about running for higher office, but her goal is to be useful. Not an EGO thing. Right now i believe this to be true and something tells me it will remain sho she is.

Her ideas are not radical or extreme is just that we have drifted so far from being fair, and just to the average person
in favor of the rich that when we settle for incremental gains it feels like we gained 10% of "garbage" or minus -100 to
-90. Ask yourself what middle class Americans could have done with the past 20 years of $ Trillions of dollars in tax
cuts to the rich that have not created jobs. AOC please pass a law to make the rich give back all that money if they did
not create jobs the last 20 years or freeze their bank accounts just like we do to dictators and money launderers.

    • @animenerd453

I agree with you. My issue is that "conservatives" are actually becoming more and more extreme to fight the "far left". Like watch some conservatives. They started off pretty fair racially neutral. But like them start race baiting and saying some crazy shit. But the left isn't right either. They have no respect for anything but their own little group. So to me AOC is actually the most center person in media right now. I think she's too young. But like I'm younger than her. I just like the idea of my leaders being older. But hey a good leader is a good leader. I don't like her supporters (high class media) at all though.
