We know there are HUGE winter storms, great winds, and major (heavy) snow-fall events in the area. 🏔 Sorry if this has already been discussed, but how will y'all protect the new greenhouse ? 🥶Is there to be some sort of winterisation - partial dismantling, windbreaks, wood-covering the glass etc ? ❄- I guess there's good reason why the ancestors chose to build their mountain shelters in heavy, durable stone.
@@rickmcdixon2675 I,ve lived in the alps all my life (1.600 m) and I've noticed that the glasses Martijn mount have a good thickness and considering the long time he wait for receiving it I can imagine he had ordered anti-crash model. The poles are in the ground and is really difficult that a winter storm or a wind storm can destroy them. The most fragile parts are the windows he uses for the side areas, but only for the glasses mounted that are for civilians homes and not for a greenhouse use. The maximum that can happen is that one or two of that glasses can break with a very limited damage that will be really fast solved

That greenhouse is a thing of beauty for sure. And I'm certain the fence will be as well, in spite of the extreme amount of work entailed. You're one of the most hardworking humans on UA-cam - not just hard working but with an artist's eye and an engineer's caution.

The ornamental decoration on the gable is, in English, a finial.
My dad built a Greenhouse years ago.. he grew all kinds of stuff in it. In the winter he would sit in it on cold days. As long as it was sunny it was warm in there.. I remember the great earthy smell in it.. He passed in 2006.

"Finials" sounds good because what's in Dutch a "makelaar" is in English a "realtor" :-). Which would be a very bad and not fitting translation for this gable end detail.

I am inspired every weekend by something wonderful that comes out of Martijn's brain and hands. In particular, when he has to re-do something that won't cooperate... like that one pane of greenhouse glass that wouldn't sit right until he shaved down its frame. Admirable persistence = beautiful results.
Love the aerial shots and being able to see the homesteads below along with the hills. Everything is so green. You selected a beautiful property and have made it more beautiful. The decorative elements often found at the top of gables or the ends of roof ridges on buildings, the term “makelaars”, we would call these "gable finials" or "gable decorations/gable ornaments", “roof finals/roof ornaments”, sometimes also referred to as “gable spires”. The greenhouse is looking beautiful with the fitted glazing panels 🌱
I was just about to post the same information when I saw you'd already done it! I hope Martjin realizes the serene pleasure his videos impart weekly: my Sunday morning espresso, a walk to see the chickens, and that restful panorama of craggy peaks suspended in dreamy mist. Lovely.

The "makelaar" in Dutch is the centre vertical structural piece in a truss. The ornamental piece on the outside at the ends of the roof is called a "gevelteken" in Dutch.

Martijn - please consider wearing a leather apron while debarking the trees. I worry when I see you do this, with the blade coming so close to your midsection. I am sure the leather apron would come in handy for some of your other projects as well. My grandfathers always had these on hand in their tool shed. ♥🙏

Interesting to read some of the comments and realize other people were a bit panicked too when Martijn didn't arrive on time! I always worry about you being up there by yourself and riding your bike on those scary roads! My stomach just clenched when I saw that road. Makelaars are usually seen in Nordic fishing towns as the word means to tie the roof together. It is the sign of hope, faith, and love. Other parts of the world use different symbols and religious signs, from the tortoise to whales or little Buddhas. The greenhouse became beautiful. It is quite the rainy season, eh. Colder than usual and so much rain.

Bike helmets do, at times, double as an umbrella. I see you made it work. Greenhouse looks beautiful. We call them finials in English. Chickens are looking healthy and well. Glad things are going well for you. Just FYI in 'new soil' (engineered soil in a raised bed) it is ALWAYS a rough first year of growing. Sometimes a little Mycorrhizal fungi can really help because regular soil already has a complex web of life in it that has been established for thousands, if not millions of years. Anytime I plant something out or have 'new soil' I dust it with Mycorrhizal to help establish the web of life and bring living soil to the plants. Plants actually don't 'eat fertilizer' they eat the chemical byproducts of the web of life operating in the soil.

Well, I am concerned about whether a cow, a goat, or any other animal can enjoy having that constant noise in its ears. We have an anthropocentric and arrogant view that what we like MUST be liked by the rest of the animal world.

We stumbled upon Lago Maggiore when looking into interesting train trips; the slow train Centovalli from Brig to Domodossola to Locarno looking interesting, so we just took a chance. We fell in love with Locarno and go as often as we can, it's just a delightful area of the world! Have a wonderful trip!
