Wow...i had read several articles on how heavy the Mig-31 is compared to other fighters...but now when you see it flying here by the side of the Mig-21 and the Mig-29 you realize how massive it is.
MiG-25 and MiG-31 are impressive interceptors, it's a shame that the USA captured a traitor's MiG-25 and other Iraqi MiGs to study them.....anyway, the Soviet projected some of the best planes in the world
Who gives a crap about environmental issues :) if the engine smokes or not, it's still gives out so much CO2 and nitrous oxides etc ... problem with engines that smoke is that in a dogfight or when you are still slightly BVR enemy can spot you easier, they just look at where the smoke trail starts.
Numbers is more simplest for understanding. Soviet aircraft is more easiest for tech support and flying control. So, why don't get more simplest names for it? Soviet engineer school is very systematic, so it's more simple to understand. For this example names been used. Numbers is more systematic, then beautiful names.
If there was a race between the two of this the SR-71 Blackbird would easily out run the Mig-31. The Mig-31's Max speed is quoted at Mach 2.83 or 1,900+ mph. The SR-71's speed as far as we know is rated at Mach 3.15 or 2,210+ mph. Either way it would be interesting to see these two make a takeoff run side by side and see which would get into the air and service celling first. Now that would be a site to see. The Mig-31 is still the Fastest Combat Interceptor in the World. The next fastest is the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle Mach 2.5, the Subkio Su-27 Flanker Mach 2.45, F-106 Delta Dart Mach 2.4,, and Mig-23 Flogger Mach 2.35. The reason the SR-71 Blackbird is not listed in this category is that it is only a Spy Plane and not a combat aircraft. That said there was a secret project to make the SR-71 a Combat Interceptor but the project was cancelled in the late 1960's in favor of the F-106 Delta Dart.

Experienced in the pilot in 3rd Generation plane can beat rookie pilot in 4.5 or maybe even 5th Generation Fighters. My saying is if you're not great don't matter if fly the best plane you may wind up being Ace Bait for the pilot in an old plane.

Ok then why do we have 3 bombers then if US isn't going to use then against Russia. The Mig-31 Foxhounds is not to just shot down Bombers but it can Intercept Naval Patrol Craft, airborn AWACS, and transport and Refuellers. This can teach a spot were any of these Craft may be out of range of standard Fighter. And it has an impressive weapons load and Radar. Don't count it out just yet.
And because it can shoot down cruise missiles too. Don’t forget the it was the introduction of the MiG-31 that brought down the curtain on the illustrious career of the SR-71.
It was never intended to be a dog fighter. It is a pure interceptor and when you have a landmass as large as Russia, your defence needs are likely to be quite different from those of the United States, who spend most of their time fighting on other continents and calling it defence.
It was designed to patrol the far northern and eastern borders of USSR and stay on patrol for long time, that mean a lot of fuel... its more of a air mobile rocket launcher platform than airplane... but a platform capable moving with 3000km/h detecting targets 150 miles away. Essentially a flying AA system.
